The new car is somewhat reminiscent of the sixth version, but it is worth noting that the 2018 Mazda CX 9 is an order of magnitude larger than its predecessor. Features of the model include the round shape of the grille and its fairly large dimensions. There are several chrome elements on the surface of the car. The optics used in the new model are characterized by relatively small sizes and a slightly oblong shape, as indeed are the case for all cars of this Japanese manufacturer that appeared years earlier.
The front part of the bumper is quite massive and equipped with air intakes. A minimalist style was used to create the rear bumper: there is nothing superfluous on it, the lights are small, and under the glass there is an additional chrome strip, which is a kind of continuation of them. There was plastic protection along the entire perimeter of the body, which you wouldn’t even notice with the naked eye, because the manufacturer wanted it to blend in with the coating. The wheel arches are distinguished by their impressive dimensions, which make it possible to install large-sized wheels (up to 20 inches). Thanks to the use of modern Japanese technologies, the car has a chrome layer, which provides additional shine to the new product.
Crossover dimensions
The new product from the Japanese manufacturer has quite impressive characteristics, but, for example, the body length is 5056 millimeters, which is 30 millimeters less than the model that preceded the Mazda CX 9 2017 (2016). But in order to make staying in the car more comfortable, the wheelbase had to be increased to 1930 mm. Taking into account all the trends of our time, in order to ensure the demand for the new product, durable high-quality steel was used during the manufacture of the body. This simplified the control process and significantly reduced the weight of the machine. Having analyzed everything that has been said, we can confidently classify the Mazda CX 9 as a middle-class crossover. Despite the fact that the manufacturer tried to do everything to ensure that the model was well equipped, the new product is unlikely to take a leading position in the competition with cars with similar characteristics. The reason for this will be the presence of only one engine, the need to select a transmission, as well as insufficiently developed lighting systems compared to popular crossovers from the German auto industry.
Spacious interior of the CX-9

The crossover can accelerate to 192 km/h, and the first hundred can be reached in literally 10 seconds. Working on a mixed cycle, consumption will not exceed 11 liters. At the moment, it is possible to purchase the crossover by pre-order in seven different colors. The standard equipment has wheels with a diameter of 18 inches. The size can be increased to 20 inches for an additional fee. In turn, it is worth noting the high-quality diode optics, which are installed even in the basic configuration from the manufacturer. The price of the new model includes a multimedia system and an 8-inch touch screen running on the Mazda Connect system. The driver and passengers will also be pleased that the cabin is equipped with a Bose audio system with 12 powerful speakers.
The Japanese manufacturer has carefully worked out the security system. It is called i-Activsense, and includes the option of cruise control. Thanks to it, the crossover will be able to automatically stop if it approaches an oncoming car. In addition, it is possible to monitor blind spots and switch headlights from low to high beam. But only the Sport version is equipped with this feature. Despite the fact that the car is quite large in size, the new model is quite simple and comfortable to drive, has a powerful engine and excellent characteristics that guarantee safe driving even at high speeds.

What I liked: the design is beyond praise, the interior is 4+ (poor ergonomics with good design and materials), driving properties are 4 (smooth ride, minimal roll, excellent dynamics and zero cross-country ability).

What I didn’t like at all: as stated above - ergonomics. The controls are laid out badly. Not only is the light control on the turn signal lever, but the steering wheel rim completely covers the switch. As a result, it is impossible to switch modes without diverting attention from the road. Fortunately, there is a full-fledged auto mode. Next, the climate control is closed by the automatic transmission mode shift lever, and in auto mode the climate blows into your feet... Why?!
There is significantly less space behind the front passenger than behind the driver (I adjusted both seats to suit myself). In order to sit in front more or less comfortably (without resting your knees on the glove compartment), the passenger seat will be moved further back than the driver's.
Horse turning radius - I didn’t get into the parking lot at the Festival the first time, I had to back away. Today, consumption in busy Moscow is 17.7 l/100 km.

I really liked the head-up display on the windshield, I’ve never had one like this before, I was afraid it would be annoying, but there are no rules, it’s very convenient. Adaptive high beam, just super, again I thought it was some kind of bullshit, but no, everything works as it should.
I don’t touch the light at all, the automatic high beam is on all the time, and the car itself decides when to turn it on/off (only with good street lighting), and when there is oncoming traffic, it doesn’t turn it off, but somehow moves the beam to the side.
I liked the active keeping of the car in the lane; sometimes you get distracted from the road, but this thing brings you back. Everything else is at the proper level, as it should be in a car that costs 3 million. It drives well, confidently, everything is beautiful inside, and outside too!
Now about the small shortcomings, or rather quibbles. The rear view camera gets dirty all the time in the Moscow slush, the same thing happened in Tiana, there were cameras in a circle there. Honestly, it's complete crap. In 90% of cases they are dirty.
No seat ventilation. Now I don’t care, of course, but in the summer I will begin to remember Mazda engineers with unkind words. The steering wheel is heated only in the grip area of the steering wheel, and not in a circle. Incomprehensible savings...
In all other respects, the car is good: large, comfortable, stylish, with a rather interesting and modern design.

Friends! I've been waiting for a long time for the 2017 CX-9 to appear in the Russian Federation. I waited. Result: complete disappointment. Since the delivery of the 9 to the market in America, Canada and Japan, I have watched dozens of enthusiastic videos: cool design, cheerful engine, maximum equipment and 50 kilos of sound insulation.
And all this in terms of wooden ones was around 2.6 million, taking into account supplies to the Russian Federation. And so it appeared here in mid-October 2017. So what: a stripped-down “maximum” configuration without a sunroof, a full-size spare wheel, a heated windshield, a fin, with a dull interior and no sound insulation...
In a word - complete disappointment, and all this is at least 3.01 million rubles. Well, and the real fuel consumption is 18.5 liters.

Finally I have it, my new Mazda CX-9! Second generation! Fresh! The Supreme equipment is the minimum for Russia, but the price is wow - almost three million. Large roomy car. Three rows of seats. Comfortable, high seating. Made exactly for my height. A family of five, including myself, is easily accommodated.
First impressions - wow! I won’t say it’s going fast, but it’s going quite brazenly. I would like more traction when overtaking. In American versions there are 250 hp, but ours is reduced to 231 hp to save on taxes. It is not clear why so much was cut off. If only five horses would be removed, it would be nice...
I wouldn’t say that fuel consumption is modest. It has been run in, but you need to take into account that it is winter. In the city it flies under 20 liters, on the highway 10-12 liters. Quite a lot, but the car is heavy. But I really like the way it steers. The automatic works clearly and smoothly, like a CVT.
The trunk is large. I usually drive with the third row folded. It's a shame there's no full-size spare. Just a proof. A subwoofer is built inside it. He plays like that normally. Music, by the way, Bose. Premium, 12 speakers. I didn't even have to pay extra for it.
I’ll say this about the package – it’s not bad. Although not everything you want is there. Electric settings for the front seats with driver memory are good. Light and rain sensors, all-round parking sensors, cruise, trunk drive. The steering wheel, two rows of seats and mirrors are heated. There is no heated windshield (sad). The headlights are LED, cool, but the running lights are halogen. It's kind of strange.
Inconveniences... Oddly enough, the multimedia screen. It is touch-sensitive, but the sensor is switched off during movement and you can only control it with the knobs. Who said it's safer? By the time you get used to such a transition, you will count all the pillars. Well, it sticks out from the top of the panel; I would like it to be hidden inside when not needed, but this function is not available. The rest of the impressions are positive so far.

Engine and automatic transmission
Of course, it’s too early to talk about the reliability of Mazda’s new turbo engine, but its settings are worth praising. The engine is very responsive and predictable. In combination with the box, it creates confidence in every action. You always know how the car will behave in any situation. The driver always clearly understands what will happen at such a speed if the pedal is pressed like this.
The car is beautiful. Very beautiful. From afar. But at the same time, upon closer inspection, all the traces of the car wash are visible. The quality of the paintwork is the same as on all Japanese cars. Plastic door trims are especially difficult to withstand aggressive car wash workers who create shine...
He is beautiful. Almost without any “buts”. It is beautiful, finished with good materials and quite ergonomic (the location of all elements is clear and intuitive). The forces on the buttons/washers are verified and accurate. You can adjust everything without looking. Finally, the passenger seat is height adjustable!
The third row is suitable for children and teenagers no more than 150-160 cm tall and for driving a distance not exceeding 200 km. Then it will be inconvenient for them.
Suspension and handling
The car's habits are very close to those of a passenger car. Moreover, to the German, and not to the Japanese. There is some rolliness in turns, but, of course, it cannot be compared with Kruzaks. And even Ford fell much more heavily.
The car drives very well, and the car is quite comfortable for everyone. It swallows small things on the road completely unnoticed, smooths out large potholes perfectly, without breakdowns. The only thing he doesn’t like is simultaneous collision with the sharp edge of an obstacle with two front wheels at once.

An acquaintance with the second generation Mazda CX-9, the flagship model of the brand, took place in Georgia. Thanks to this, we were able to test the car on almost all possible routes and surfaces - on highways and narrow streets, on mountain serpentines and country dirt roads.
The first thing that struck me about the new flagship crossover of the Japanese brand was its appearance. On the one hand, the designers brought the exterior of the new product to the KODO corporate style, on the other hand, a really large and spacious car with three rows of seats does not visually feel like one. There is no trace left of the full-bodied appearance of the previous generation of “nine”; from now on, laconicism, swiftness and leanness rule the roost. Moreover, the luxurious radiator grille in half of the front end and the “horns” of the fog lights, connected by a chrome trim on the lower part of the bumper, fit perfectly into this concept. Thanks to this, a healthy aggression is felt in the car’s appearance, set by the predatory squint of blackened diode headlights at the front and the flourish of the rear lights, raised to the glazing line. Of course, there are no comrades according to taste, but personally, I like the sparkling bow of the new generation CX-9 much more than the previous one - the Japanese managed to create a truly charismatic car.
It's no worse inside. As if the carpet that set the style of the entire room of the protagonist of the comedy “The Big Lebowski”, the tone for the interior decoration of the Mazda CX-9 is set by the three-spoke steering wheel. Miniature, plump, trimmed with leather and aluminum inserts framing the keys. You just want to grab onto it and not let go, and after the test you want to take it with you. And even though the skin itself seems rough, the heating, which I turned on despite the warm weather, allows me to close my eyes to all the other little things.
Following the steering wheel, which is adjustable in two planes, the mood is supported by the three “wells” of the dashboard. The first two houses the dial speedometer and tachometer, the third contains a color monitor that displays a lot of useful information. Including, for example, the position of the car in the lane. An image of a cup of coffee is also displayed there - a subtle hint that it’s time for the driver to rest. Moreover, the driver fatigue monitoring system really works: the car offered me a break just at the moment when I myself was thinking about a “smoke break.”
In addition, the speedometer readings are duplicated - the numbers are projected onto the windshield. And in the middle of the front panel there is an 8-inch monitor with navigation and multimedia system. The image from the rear view camera is also displayed on its screen, and in the event of a dangerous approach to obstacles, the blind spot monitoring sensors additionally warn about this with a squeak and a schematic image.
Like at home
The interior trim is pleasant, and the intricate soft furnishings on the instrument panel are a delight. Yes, the material with which, for example, the racks are covered, does not amaze the imagination with its workmanship or texture, but the practicality here is at its best, and, I believe, there will be no problems with cleaning. But the light leather of the seats is a bit scary. Of course, the choice of color will be up to the buyer, but I would bet on non-staining dark colors - fortunately they are offered.
But if the color design leaves room for discussion, then the ergonomics are good without any controversy. Getting into the cabin through the huge opening of the front door is comfortable even with a height of two meters; inside, too, it does not press or press anywhere. Moreover, both on the first and second row of seats. Perhaps, it will be a bit cramped only for those who decide to ride in the third row, and then only if the height of the passengers exceeds 180 cm.
Another big (literally and figuratively) plus is the trunk. It seems almost dimensionless (if you fold the third row of seats). Once you get used to this, it will be extremely difficult to change to another car. Judge for yourself, 230 liters of volume with the third row, 810 without it, and if you also fold the second row of seats, you get not only a flat floor, but also a 1641-liter compartment! But there is also a traditional glove compartment (albeit a small one), a spacious container in the armrest, and other shelf pockets.
For those who cannot imagine traveling without all sorts of gadgets, in addition to two USB connectors, there is also a slot for memory cards where you can upload music. In addition, any device connects via Bluetooth to a “multimedia” that will allow even music lovers to enjoy music - ten speakers of the Bose audio system will help with this. And also excellent sound insulation - at high speeds in the cabin you can talk in a low voice; the Japanese have worked hard on this component.
Healthy diet
The supercharged 2.5-liter petrol four is also quite quiet. And if anyone thinks that the flagship model should have a six (at least as an option), I disagree: the power of 231 hp offered by the SkyActiv-G 2.5T engine is quite enough for decent dynamics. Acceleration to the first hundred is stated at 8.6 seconds and seems to correspond to real figures, at least in Sport mode.
There is only one turbine, but either thanks to the SkyActiv technologies, expressed in an increased compression ratio to 10.5:1 and the design of the exhaust manifold, or due to the competent settings of the 6-band automatic transmission, despite all my efforts, I was able to identify the turbo lag failed. Gears change quickly and barely noticeably, kick-down works at lightning speed, so overtaking on the highway is effortless.
Of course, consumption during active driving, for example, on mountain serpentines, highways and city traffic jams, differs from the declared 7.2 liters, but even with all the activities it did not go far from 10 l/100 km - very good for such a large car! The “weight loss” also affected handling - the new flagship of the brand, although it feels like a large crossover, remains obedient and predictable. The electric power steering provides a pleasant density, so driving on winding roads somehow imperceptibly moves from the category of banal control to the category of piloting. Elastic suspensions also contribute to this: stability is high, roll is minimal, and there is no need to complain about the lack of comfort.
The brakes are sufficient - deceleration is predictable, the pedal responds adequately to pressure. Perhaps dynamic climbing in the mountains requires greater agility from the mechanisms, but for everyday driving the brakes are ideal, and the anti-lock braking system pleases with its unobtrusiveness.
By the way, there are a lot of electronic assistants here. In addition to the traditional “anti-slip” ESP, the new Mazda “nine” boasts systems of dynamic stabilization, lateral stability, brake force distribution and dynamic control of torque distribution. In addition, the crossover recognizes pedestrians and, in the event of a dangerous approach, can automatically brake, and a road sign reading system is also offered as an option.
Don't be afraid of dirt!
So, on the pavement, the new CX-9 is good at everything. What's beyond? In search of an answer, I drive onto a washed-out dirt road, pretty much “crippled” by dump trucks. However, the all-wheel drive vehicle does not seem to notice the difference - it moves reliably in the rut, only waddling over potholes. At the same time, the 220 mm ground clearance allows you not to crawl with the bottom over rocks and bumps and calmly overcome even deep puddles. Surely we can talk about confident driving in the snow in winter - if necessary, the electronics will help. Perhaps the off-road potential of this “Japanese” will be enough for more, but during the current test I was not able to verify this - in Georgia, you also need to know where to look for true off-road conditions.
The bottom line is that the second generation Mazda CX-9 gives the impression of a very comfortable and spacious car, ideal for a large family and daily trips both around the city and in nature. At the same time, the new product fully corresponds to the ideology of Mazda - the model is dynamic, obedient, and emotional. Which, you see, also means a lot. Let us only add that the company’s dealers have already begun accepting orders for the car, the starting price of which is set at 2,890,000 rubles.

The return of the model to the market is a good reason to remember it again. While Mazda dealers are actively trying to interest buyers of the restyled CX-9, we decided to pay attention to the copies sold during its “first coming.”
Fate played a cruel joke on the large crossover from Mazda. Having appeared in Russia in 2007, the CX-9 was supposed to win a piece of the pie from its competitors in the segment, but before our car enthusiast had time to try the new product, the economic crisis occurred. Buyers began to count every penny and try to get as much as possible for it. In this regard, our heroine’s chances of success have dropped noticeably: after all, the car costs almost 2,000,000 rubles. could not even offer parking sensors or xenon lamps, which have long become the norm in the classroom. What had to happen happened: almost two years after the start of sales, the CX-9 disappeared from the line of officially presented Mazda in Russia.
Meanwhile, the car was very good. Of course, one can complain about the almost complete lack of choice: only one engine was offered (V6, 277 hp), and only an automatic transmission. At the same time, it is precisely this tandem that should be recognized as the most popular in this segment. As for the other qualities of the crossover, they look very attractive against the general background. With its considerable dimensions and seven-seat layout, the CX-9 boasts car-like handling. The dynamics are also not bad - however, in this case, the medal, as usual, has two sides. For many crossover owners, fuel consumption seems too high - about 17 l/100 km (you can use AI-92), and the smoothness of the ride is insufficient. Indeed, on uneven surfaces, passengers shake a lot, especially if R20 wheels are installed. In addition, it cannot be said that the cabin is quiet - if the engine is not heard so clearly, then the noise from the road is clearly distinguishable. Sometimes they are accompanied by creaking of plastic interior trim parts.
Tips and regulations
But in terms of reliability, the CX-9 fully meets the expectations of the buyer of a Japanese car. Serious malfunctions practically never happen: all units are very reliable. It is recommended to change the engine oil after 10 thousand km, and it is advisable to do the same after 60-70 thousand km with automatic transmission oil (although the manufacturer does not provide for such an operation). Traditionally, in Russia, the suspension most often requires repair. In the front, the strut supports turned out to be the most vulnerable point - they were replaced during the warranty period, on some cars more than once. There were complaints about the front brake discs - they were deformed, which caused beating on the steering wheel. Similar complaints arose from those who did not hesitate to use the capabilities of a powerful engine - after all, a two-ton car is not very suitable for city racing.
The suspension arms are unlikely to require replacement up to 70 thousand km; the service life of the shock absorbers even exceeds “a hundred”. Perhaps this durability of the parts is due primarily to the urban mode of use of the crossover. Climbing into the mud on it is a futile task. The low ground clearance (204 mm) and the absence of blocking or its imitation do not encourage frequent departures from the asphalt. However, even on it, the owners of the CX-9 are not always comfortable: when parking near a high curb, a stone can easily be hit by the plastic door trim, which in the crossover reaches the bottom of the threshold.

However, these are just the nuances of operation. The same nuances include the equipment of cars on the secondary market. Quite poor initially, it was supplemented at any cost, so carefully read the list of non-standard equipment already installed. There are quite a few CX-9s in good condition on sale: the relatively high price of the crossover did not encourage reckless youngsters to buy, and the owners, as a rule, carry out maintenance in a timely manner.

Unfortunately, the Mazda CX-9 is not such a popular car that we need to collect reliable statistics on it. At least we do not note any systemic, constantly occurring malfunctions. The cost of maintaining a large crossover is no more than, for example, a CX-7 or many other models in the same class. There are no problems with the availability of spare parts in Moscow. Of course, there are a number of not very successful design solutions: for example, when one of our client’s cars needed to replace the rear axle mounting silent block, it turned out that it could only be purchased assembled with a rear beam. I had to, as they say, look for options. Unfortunately, many modern cars have such features, which allow the manufacturer to save money and simplify a number of assembly operations.

I bought a car not without incident: for example, the dealer tried to sell me a copy with 100,000 rubles already installed. additional equipment. But when I got behind the wheel, I forgot about everything. The CX-9's interior is very comfortable (not only for me, but also for my 190 cm tall husband). True, it is a little noisy, especially at high speed, as noted by everyone who rode with me. Another minus is fuel consumption, more than 15 l/100 km in the city at a normal pace. Maybe not such critical figures for a large car, but I was hoping for more modest appetites.
The CX-9 has been driven more than 30,000 km, including about 6,000 in the regions. The suspension is alive and well - only some small part was changed under warranty. Involuntarily, I compare the reliability of the Japanese crossover with the three German ones that my friends drive: so far Mazda is in the lead. So I don’t regret at all that I remained faithful to the brand at one time. As for fuel consumption, it’s apparently an inevitability that you need to be prepared for.
