What does the expression meter with a cap mean. Meter with cap: testing the Volvo V40 Cross Country in Sweden

The Swedes, of course, say: a crossover. The body of the Cross Country version is really 35 mm higher than the usual "forty", and a few more millimeters of overall height are given by the roof rails. Total - 1458 mm. Sparsely: after all, the height "at the withers" of the Subaru XV crossover with railing is 157mm more, BMW X1 - by 87mm. Against their background, the V40 Cross Country - a meter with a cap!

By the way, do you know where this expression comes from? At the beginning of the last century, children no more than a meter could ride in St. Petersburg trams for free - the conductor checked their height against a meter-long wooden fence in front of his seat. And many thrifty parents specially put on caps on their grown-up children: they say, without her there would be just a meter ...

The finish is gorgeous, and no German competitor can boast of a wood-textured front fascia

And why "with the cap" the declared ground clearance of the V40 Cross Country increased by only 12 mm, to 145 mm? Because for the sake of preserving the kinematics of the suspension, the front subframe remained in the same place - in fact, the body is raised above it! And only larger wheels give an increase in ground clearance.

So much for the crossover. In fact, this is just an ordinary C-class hatchback with optional all-wheel drive - built, by the way, on the Ford C1 platform from the "second" Focus. The improvements only affected the steering mechanism and the steering column - by analogy with the Volvo S60, the steering gear is now equipped with an electric booster and a parking system (albeit only parallel to the sidewalk).

The seat is flat, but not rigid and therefore comfortable

And the V40 Cross Country does not look like an off-road fighter: only silver lining on the bumpers and for a surcharge of 15 thousand rubles on the thresholds. But handsome! The interior is conservative in a Scandinavian way, finishing materials are "expensive", handles flip nobly. Seven colors of backlighting can be selected manually, plus its color automatically changes depending on the outside temperature. But like an eyesore - a cheap insert made of transparent plexiglass on the automatic transmission selector with indication of the selected mode. Thank goodness this is an option.

The seats are comfortable, but unpretentious, of medium hardness and almost no lateral support. And it's cramped behind! The knees seem to rest lightly on the back, and the head is quite spacious, but the size 45 winter boots barely fit under the front seat. The tightness in the rear floor area is a legacy of the C1 platform in its Volvo implementation: we noted the same seven years ago with the S40 sedan. The trunk is also "hereditarily" small.

In the first two, the "drawn" speedometer is especially convenient, right on the scale of which the speed limit is marked, read by the camera from the signs, as well as the display of the cruise control. "Handbrake" for the V40 is only mechanical, but the number of electronic assistants in the menu on the central display is dazzling. The City Safety autobraking system now works not up to 30 km / h, but up to 50 km / h. Active cruise control is active from 0 to 200 km / h and works without surprises. The BLIS blind spot monitoring system is less buggy than before because it uses 76 GHz radars in the rear bumper rather than video cameras under the side mirrors. A pleasant "bonus" is the ability to "look around the corner" when maneuvering in reverse and warn the driver about an approaching car from the side. But the work of the lane keeping system was not impressive - the promised steering is not felt, and the warning vibration on the steering wheel is so weak.

And the V40 is the first Volvo to feature a driver's knee airbag and an airbag for ... pedestrians! It works in the speed range from 20 to 50 km / h: if one of the seven sensors in the front bumper detects a collision with a person, then a pillow from the bottom of the windshield fires, raising the rear edge of the hood by 10 cm and covering the body pillars. Of course, “you have to love pedestrians,” as Ilf and Petrov said, but I wonder if many Russian buyers of V40 Cross Country will order this pillow for 40 thousand rubles?

Against the background of good ergonomics, the most noticeable miscalculation is the control of the media system with the upper right "twist": you have to keep your hand suspended

The feet of the rear passengers are cramped, and the head is spacious only in cars without an optional non-opening panoramic roof for 36 thousand rubles

It was not possible to test the basic front-wheel drive car for the Russian market with a 180-horsepower T4 turbo engine (on Ford cars it is known as EcoBoost I-4). But on the all-wheel drive V40 Cross Country T5 I traveled - and the younger, 213-strong version seemed more harmonious. The Swedes almost abandoned the Ford PowerShift robots, and the classic six-speed automatic Aisin switches logically and smoothly. The dynamics are quite enough, and only the boring "trolleybus" howl of the engine spoils the matter, after 120 km / h, supplemented by the thin and distant whistling of the wind in the roof rails.

The more powerful 249-horsepower T5 sounds more cheerful and carries, of course, faster - according to the passport, acceleration to a hundred takes 6.4 seconds! But the ride comes out less smooth: a little touch the gas - and the "automatic" immediately goes down one gear, although without that there is enough traction. Moreover, in "manual" mode, the box responds to lowering with a delay, and no paddle shifters are offered.

But the chassis is class! With reactive steering on the steering wheel almost complete order, the reactions are accurate. For 13 thousand rubles, you can order a steering wheel effort adjustment with three presets, and in a "light" position, even on ice, you continue to feel what is happening to the front wheels, and in a "heavy" mode, excess viscosity on the steering wheel does not appear.

The pedestrian airbag raises the bonnet and covers the windscreen pillars. The photo on the right shows the cover of its compartment and the squibs, which "open" the hood hinges so that it can rise

The suspension is slightly softer than the regular V40, but at first it feels a little harsh on medium bumps. But you will come across a couple of larger holes or more noticeable waves - and you understand that the energy intensity is great. And at speeds over 100 km / h, stiffness goes away - excellent settings for long trips!

And on the ice of a frozen lake ... Forget all the prejudices about "no" Volvo handling and mockery of the unhurried "Volvo drivers" - the all-wheel drive "forty" is a miracle how good it is in sliding! It is necessary to slightly turn the steering wheel and press down the gas at the entrance to the turn, as the feed screws the car. Now - a little more gas, and the V40 simply and clearly "licks" the inner edge of the arc. The rear axle is driven by the latest fifth generation Haldex clutch. Since the moments of its on and off are not felt at all, the V40 Cross Country glides like a good car with permanent four-wheel drive.

But first, of course, you need to activate the sport mode of the DSTC stabilization system in the menu. And do what you want! You can turn around completely, you can turn the steering wheel from lock to lock - the electronics will only slightly crunch the brakes, distributing the torque between the right and left wheels, controlling the thrust vector. But if the throttle is completely released while sliding, showing fright, then the DSTC must intervene and return the car to the trajectory.

BLIS radars also assist in blind exits from the parking lot. Checked - it works!

By the way, the all-wheel drive versions have a hill descent assist system that maintains a speed of 10 km / h. But electronics cannot fight diagonal hanging on a country road. Because the V40 Cross Country is not a crossover!

What? In my opinion, this is a new genre at the intersection of crossovers and "hot" C-class hatchbacks. Real rivals for the V40 Cross Country will appear only by the end of the year - first of all, this is the Mercedes GLA, built according to a similar recipe based on the A-class.

The trunk is small - 335 liters, but the transformation is very convenient. For only 1,700 rubles, you can order a double floor, and the folding backs of the rear and front right seats form an almost flat surface

Prices in Russia are quite adequate - from 1 million 189 thousand rubles for the front-wheel drive version of the T4. Four-wheel drive cars are at least 90 thousand more expensive, but the basic equipment is very rich: climate control, seven airbags, City Safety system - of the important, there is only cruise control, rain sensor and radio control buttons on the steering wheel. Diesel versions will appear later.

According to the plan, every fourth V40, coming off the assembly line in the Belgian Ghent, should be "with a cap". The full capacity of the production line is 125 thousand cars per year, but the task for this year is more modest. Around the world, primarily in Japan and China, 17,000 V40 Cross Country are to be sold. Every tenth car will go to Russia. And it seems to me that the owners of these "forties" will not go wrong.

The body of the Volvo V40 Cross Country is identical to the front-wheel drive V40 hatchback except for the position of the front subframe. Plastic parts are black, aluminum parts are green, mild steel parts are gray. Various types of high strength steel are highlighted in blue, yellow, orange and red

Riding a hybrid on an ice track? This has never happened in my practice ... But if Maxim Kadakov drove a pre-production Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid (AR # 21, 2011), then we were already rolling out production cars. Initially, Volvo planned to produce only 1,500 station wagons, but demand turned out to be such that the plan for this year was increased to 5,000 hybrid V60s - no more production capacity yet allows. The price of the car is 56 thousand euros, and 80% of the production should be sold to corporate parks.

The production car differs only in the color of the buttons for switching modes of the hybrid power plant - they are not white, but ordinary black. And the software "glitches" are completely cured - the diesel engine does not just stall, but starts up softly and imperceptibly, reminding of itself only by vibration at idle speed.

The first lap on ice is in the basic Hybrid mode, when the front axle is driven by a 215-horsepower diesel engine through a six-speed automatic, and a 70-horsepower electric motor helps the rear axle. Boring stuff! The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid slips out of the corner with its entire two-tonne carcass, almost unresponsive to attempts to "throw" the feed with traction.

I press the separately located AWD button - the forced-all-wheel drive mode works up to 75 km / h. More fun! It is felt that the electric motor spins the rear wheels more actively. And it is worth choosing the Power mode, and the reactions to gas are exacerbated. If you overcome the initial tendency of the car to outward the bend, boldly stomping on the gas pedal, you can get an "all-wheel drive" thrill!

The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid has five driving modes: the main ones are Pure, Hybrid and Power, as well as AWD all-wheel drive and the Save mode, which maintains a 20-kilometer range on "clean electricity"

But the battery will run out, as it happened with me. And after that, whichever mode you choose, assistance from the rear electric motor becomes minimal. Demolition, only demolition ...

And then I drove the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid to the airport. At half the charge, I easily drove 15 km, without denying myself the maximum allowed 80 km / h. And then he pressed the Save button, and within 25 km the diesel engine recharged the battery with a capacity of 11.2 kWh (of which 8 kWh is used) to a power reserve of 20 km. Surprisingly, braking recuperation usually begins only when the brake pedal is touched - if you just release the gas, the V60 Plug-in Hybrid even accelerates downhill. The brakes are unambiguous, there is no "two-stage" sensation, and only with emergency braking, the pedal goes down unnecessarily.

And the average consumption of diesel fuel at minus ten degrees overboard turned out to be only 5.8 liters per 100 km. Much less than that of the V40 Cross Country, where even with a two-liter engine, during the quietest ride, it did not fall below 10 l / 100 km.

LEGENDS

The first trolleybus is shrouded in legends and myths. Germany... In 1936 he appeared in the city Insterburg - now Chernyakhovsk, Kaliningrad region.

However, in January 1945, the trolleybus traffic stopped there due to the approaching front line. And there were no more trolleybuses. According to the official version, before the retreat, the Nazi troops removed all contact lines from the copper wire. According to the unofficial, it was not without evil spirits. Trolleybus passengers sometimes saw glowing greenish ghosts. In a thunderstorm and on dark evenings, they appeared in front of the transport or caught up with it, and sometimes even took the driver's seat. According to legend, everything happened in only one place - on the suburban highway from the city to the Georgienburg castle. Fortunately, no one was hurt by the unknown ghosts. And today the residents of Chernyakhovsk are carried around the city only by buses. There were no ghosts left, nor, alas, trolleybuses.

HISTORY

The catch phrase "meter with a cap" appeared thanks to the tram. In the first half of the 20th century, the problem of free travel for children was solved in an original way. At the entrance to the car, a line was made at a height of 1 meter. Children with height below the meter mark went free. For higher ones already had to pay.

It's a great idea to avoid controversy about which child is considered small. Alas, there are no fewer scandals. Parents who did not want to pay the fare told the conductor that their child was less than a meter tall. And his height only seems taller - and all because of the headdress. They say that this is where the expression came from: "meter with a cap."

IN THE WORLD

Slowest city bus. This is the M79 in American New York. It runs at an average speed of less than 5 km / h on 79th Street. A fast walking pedestrian can overtake him effortlessly. The bus moves along busy highways, there are a lot of passengers, and the driver is also a conductor, hence the slowness of the 79th.

However, this spring the situation may change for the better. New York authorities have pledged to place ticket booths at bus stops, and to make dedicated lanes for buses only. In the meantime, the route remains the most leisurely transport, and even collects comic anti-awards for such achievements.
