The world premiere of Frontera took place in 1991 in Geneva. Gasoline engines tend to be in much better physical shape due to their lower mileage. Unfortunately, they are also not without drawbacks. The flagship 3.2 V6 handles the SUV mass well, but is expensive to maintain. The basic 2-liter unit is structurally simple and cheap to repair, but very weak. The 2.2 liter engine does not evoke flattering words from mechanics and consumes slightly less fuel than the 3.2 liter gasoline engine.

The 2.2-liter petrol engine is voracious, but much more reliable than the 2.2 DTI, which has been used since 1999.

Most often, oil leaks are found in gasoline engines. The condition of the exhaust manifold must be monitored. In cars assembled before 2000, it often burst. Sometimes the air flow meter fails.

Do not expect that you will be able to find a copy that does not require any financial investment. After all, the car is already at a venerable age. Please note that gasoline engines use a belt-type timing drive with a replacement interval of 60,000 km. Therefore, so that a disaster does not happen, it is better to replace the timing belt immediately. By spending a little after purchase, you will be able to avoid costly overhauls in the future.

Design features

Opel Frontera was offered with two types of gearboxes: 5-speed manual and 4-range automatic. The torque is transmitted to the wheels of the rear axle, and the front axle is connected forcibly. The General Motors concern was no exception. Having bought out the Japanese automaker ISUZU at the end of the eighties, the American concern released many models on the European and American markets, which were developed by the Japanese.

The Isuzu Rodeo SUV, produced since 1988, was quite popular in North America.

Apparently, this is why this model was chosen by the GM leadership to conquer the European SUV market. The platform of the Japanese car was quite thoroughly redesigned by specialists from OPEL - a new engine, interior and exterior were developed. The new car, named Opel Frontera, was presented to European consumers in 1991.

The first generation of the Opel Frontera was produced in two body styles - five and three-door. The three-door car received the Sport prefix to its name. First modernization

However, despite these shortcomings, the European consumer liked the car - they liked the spaciousness, unpretentiousness and price of the novelty. With this in mind, four years after the start of sales, the model was slightly modernized. The spring suspension was replaced with a more modern and appropriate spring suspension, the spare wheel was moved to a special niche on the tailgate, the interior was slightly updated. But, most importantly, the "older" gasoline engine, too gluttonous for economical Europeans, was replaced with a new diesel engine.

But all efforts in conquering off-road were canceled out by weak engines. With a 3.2 liter engine, the car behaved most adequately where the roads ended or along the highway.
