In the spacious frame of the windshield, the picture "Winter Beach in the Thaw" appeared: shallow but heavy sleet on top of loose sand. What to turn on before you get stuck? "According to the mind" it would be necessary to have a lower gear in the "razdatka" and all the locks that are there. However, the third "Discovery" knows everything himself - the "Terrain Response" system optimizes the settings of the engine, transmission and suspension depending on external conditions. It's up to you to ask them: normal coverage, grass / gravel / snow, mud / potholes, sand, stones. My case is not foreseen, so I choose the second mode - it is also listed as "universal off-road". On the 7-inch touchscreen display, I immediately read the recommendations: "turn on a lower gear" and "increase the ground clearance." The transfer case here is what you need - with a lowered row of 2.93. The adjustable air suspension, in addition to the ability to "squat" by 50 mm when landing and loading, gives an advantage on the off-road: one movement - and instead of the standard 185 mm under the bottom there is already 240 mm. Differential locks are more difficult. It is put into the rear interwheel for an additional payment of $ 700: alas, it is not on this car. But at the center it is switched on, if necessary, only automatically. I give him gas, gas - but he doesn't want to. It floats up to its hubs in a snow-sandy mess, occasionally grunting with the brakes and winking with the central differential lock icon - the traction control keeps the engine in check, and the "electronic locks" slow down the wheels, ready to turn. Everyone stood up. Now back along the track and again forward - back and forth, back and forth, punching three or four meters at a time. Electronics does not allow you to bury yourself and lie on the bottom. I try to switch modes, but I don't feel much difference - only the permissible degree of slip changes. Maybe turn off the electronics altogether? Now hands are untied, but there is no insurance either - or you will slip through, desperately roaring with the engine and launching fountains from under the wheels, or ... By the way, "Discovery 3", even empty, weighs two and a half tons, so instead of a shovel it is better to carry in the trunk boots - to get the tractor. At the gas station, a guy in a blue uniform asks semi-affirmatively, "Ninety-fifth?" You should have seen his eyes when he heard the answer: "Diesel fuel." They literally read: "Was it worth paying a lot of money for such a handsome man to rattle in the right ranks and save on fuel?" And here, my friend, you are only partly right. To be precise, a lot of money is $ 61,900 for a diesel Discovery in the top-end HSE configuration: bi-xenon, air suspension, complete electronics, six airbags, rain and light sensors, separate climate and cruise control and much more. Yes, additional equipment for more than nine thousand. Total $ 71,000 for the test car. As for the "rumble in the right lane" ... The diesel version with the "automatic" is almost two decibels quieter than the petrol one - the dependence here is logarithmic, therefore, for example, a difference of 6 dB means a twofold decrease in the noise level! The working volume of the V-shaped "six" is rather modest for such a heavy machine - only 2.7 liters. However, thanks to four valves per cylinder, a variable geometry turbocharger and an intercooler, the engine develops 190 hp, and its power density is higher than that of the gasoline "eight" - 70 hp. from a liter against 67. However, you don't want to trample the accelerator in order to meet the passport 12.8 s when accelerating to a hundred - excellent noise insulation, soft suspension, comfortable seats, barely noticeable switching of a quick "automatic" will pacify even an inveterate racer. Discovery is a fast, even long-distance run on good (and not so good) roads. Although it is not worth relaxing at all - the light steering wheel requires careful handling, given the high center of gravity and the rolliness of the Discovery. The reaction to a sharp turn of the steering wheel is peculiar: first, the chassis slips to the side, and the body moves straight for some time, leaning more and more - and, finally, with a noticeable roll leaves behind. To be honest, I did not notice any interference from the ARM active roll mitigation system. But about fuel economy, everything is true: the average consumption, including off-road and metropolitan traffic jams, is only 18.7 l / 100 km - an excellent result! Another important factor is that Discovery is highly valued for its excellent off-road qualities, and it is the diesel unit with good torque “below” that allows them to be realized most fully. It is not surprising that even in Russia, about 60% of orders are for the diesel version. Only now it would be a sin to deprive the jeeper of the opportunity to test its strength, entrusting everything to smart electronics. Discovery 3 makes it unnecessary for the driver to drive off-road. But do Land Rovers love this?

Discovery is an off-road vehicle from the British Land Rover company. It was introduced to the world in 1989 as an intermediate between the top-end Range Rover model and the high-performance utility Defender. The Discovery quickly became Land Rover's most popular model. There are currently four generations of this vehicle.

First generation Discovery produced in the period 1989-1998 and were available in both three-door and five-door versions. Initially, there were only three-door cars, but after a year they began to produce five-door ones. In the luggage compartment there were two more seats, that is, the total capacity of the car was 7 seats.

At first, two types of engines were installed - a 2.5 liter diesel (4 cylinders, inline, 113 hp) and a 3.5 liter gasoline (8 cylinders, V-shaped, 166 hp). After 1994, two petrol engines were added to the engine range - 2.0 liters (4 cylinders, in-line, 134 hp) and 3.9 liters (8 cylinders, V-shaped, 182 hp).

The automatic transmission was installed only on Discovery with a 3.9-liter gasoline engine, the rest of the modifications were mechanics. On all modifications, four-wheel drive with the ability to manually block the center differential using a transfer case.

Two upgrades were carried out on the first Discovery. First in 1992, then in 1994. The interior design was changed, the front optics were replaced. It is also interesting that in the period 1992-1995, the Discovery was delivered to Japan under the name Honda Crossroad.

replaced the first in 1998. The appearance was not very different from its predecessor, but this is a completely different car. The engineers made about 700 changes, although most of them were minor. The car interior has become more comfortable and rich. The luggage compartment has become larger, which increases the load on the rear, which leads to a decrease in cross-country ability.

The most important change is that all-wheel drive was controlled by electronics. Many did not like it. Some models were equipped with a hydraulic anti-roll bar control system, which reduced roll when cornering at speed.

The engines have also been updated. Now Discovery 2 began to be equipped with only two engines - petrol 4.0 liters (8 cylinders, V-shaped, 185 hp) and diesel 2.5 liters (5 cylinders, in-line, 138 hp). Both engines were equipped with both an automatic transmission and a manual one. This generation was produced until 2004.

In 2004, the generation of this popular SUV changed and appeared to the delight of fans. This is a completely new car that has little to do with its predecessor. They wanted to replace the second generation for a long time, but in 2001 the Range Rover generation changed and this delayed the Discovery change.

One of the biggest changes is the fully independent air suspension. It allows you to change the ride height of the car. For example, on the highway, it decreases for better control, on the off-road, on the contrary, it increases in order to increase the geometric passability.

Three types of engines were installed on Disco 3 - gasoline 4.0 liters (6 cylinders, V-shaped, 219 hp), gasoline 4.4 liters (8 cylinders, V-shaped, 295 hp) and diesel 2.7 liters (6 cylinders , V-shaped, 200 hp). All cars were equipped with an automatic transmission, a manual one only with a diesel engine.

The electronics now completely controlled the traction control system. Anti-skid system, assistance in the descent, traction control system - all this allows you to confidently drive off-road and not be afraid of either slopes or wet roads.

The most important feature of this vehicle is Land Rover's Terrain Response system. Before that, driving on difficult terrain required the driver's experience, skill and deep knowledge of the car. With the advent of this system, you select options for surface types ("mud and rut", "grass, gravel, snow", "sand") and the computer adjusts the suspension, gearbox, lock modes, which greatly simplified driving for beginners.

The design of the car has undergone a great change. The interior has become a full-fledged seven-seater. Now 7 adults can comfortably fit in the car. There is a navigation system and a DVD player. The car received a lot of good reviews, especially after the release of the Top Gear program, when they climbed the 307-meter high Knock-en-Friesdane mountain, where there was no car yet.

The next generation of this SUV appeared in 2009. this is most likely an improvement and update of the previous generation. The design of the car was changed, the Terrain Response system was improved, and many modern car "chips" invented at that time were added.

These are technologies such as a system of all-round cameras, adaptive headlights, a TFT touchscreen display, various interfaces for connecting other electronic devices, a modern multimedia system and a GPS navigator, etc.

Discovery 4 is available with four different engines. Two petrol - 4.0 liters (6 cylinders, V-shaped, 216 hp) and 5.0 liters (8 cylinders, V-shaped, 375 hp) and two diesel 2.7 liters (6 cylinders, V-shaped, 190 hp) and 3.0 liters (6 cylinders, V-shaped, 245 hp). All vehicles are equipped with automatic transmissions. Only a car with a 2.7 liter diesel engine can be purchased with a mechanic.

Cars with characteristics similar to Discovery are Audi Q7, BMW X5, Chevrolet Tahoe, Infiniti QX56, Lexus GX, Mercedes G-Class, Mitsubishi Pajero, Nissan Patrol, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Porsche Cayenne.

Compared to its predecessor, the third generation of the Land Rover Discovery SUV has become more focused on providing maximum comfort when driving on any road. This is reflected in the abundance of modern electronic assistants, suspension improvements, a new cabin layout and other upgrades. Land Rover Discovery 3 was very popular in many countries of the world, but the car was produced for only five years.

The Discovery 3 SUV appeared in the showrooms of Land Rover dealers in 2004, immediately demonstrating a decent level of sales. The abundance of innovations invented specifically for the third generation of Discovery attracted the attention of not only specialists who handed out all kinds of awards to the novelty, but also ordinary fans of serious off-road vehicles who can not fail in the face of off-road. However, some innovations caused conflicting opinions and sometimes even fears, but over time everything fell into place and Land Rover Discovery III confirmed the high status laid down by its predecessors.

Unlike the previous generation, the Land Rover Discovery 3 received a more massive appearance, emphasized by huge optics and a large grille. In terms of dimensions, the Discovery 3 can be safely called a full-size SUV - the body length was 4835 mm, the width fit into the frame of 2190 mm, and the height was limited to 1837 mm. The length of the wheelbase of Land Rover Discovery 3 is 2885 mm, and the ground clearance is 180 mm for versions with the base suspension or from 180 to 285 mm for the variable ground clearance of the versions with air suspension. By the way, in the second case, Discovery 3 was able to overcome a ford up to 700 mm deep.
The minimum curb weight of the SUV is 2,494 kg.

The Discovery 3 cabin had two layout options: a standard five-seater and a seven-seater with two folding side seats in the trunk. The interior received a rather rich finish from high quality materials, but it was decorated quite simply, in a sense, like a man, without frills and "prettiness", i.e. exactly as the interior of a real SUV should look like, not an urban SUV.

However, this did not prevent the manufacturer from offering a fairly high level of interior equipment, as well as providing proper ride comfort in any conditions.

Specifications. In Russia, Land Rover Discovery III was offered to buyers with only two power plant options: a basic diesel engine and a top-end gasoline unit.
In some other markets, another gasoline unit was present in the engine lineup - a 4.0-liter V6 with a capacity of 219 hp, but since it was not officially in our country, we will not dwell on its detailed characteristics.

Let's better talk about the basic "diesel". In its development, the British were actively assisted by specialists from Ford and Peugeot, which made it possible to create a fairly reliable engine, perfectly adapted to the harsh Russian natural conditions. Initially, the only weakness of the engine was the injection pump and the EGR valve, but during the very first service companies in our country, all problems were eliminated, so the Discovery 3 "diesel" can be considered very reliable.
Now about the characteristics. The diesel unit had six V-shaped cylinders with a working volume of 2.7 liters (2720 cm³) and a turbocharging system, which allowed it to develop up to 195 hp. maximum power, as well as deliver 440 Nm of torque. As a gearbox for the base engine, the British offered a 6-speed "mechanics" or 6-band "automatic" Steptronic, which was in great demand because of its reliability and endurance.
Diesel Discovery 3 was distinguished by quite acceptable "gluttony": with manual transmission the average consumption was about 9.4 liters per 100 km, and with automatic transmission - 10.4 liters.

For those who were not going to often plow off-road, but preferred fast driving on asphalt, dealers offered a top-end gasoline V-shaped engine with 8 cylinders with a total displacement of 4.4 liters (4394 cm³). The flagship engine was capable of producing up to 295 hp. power and about 425 Nm of torque, but at the same time its fuel appetite was as much as 15.0 liters in the combined cycle, which significantly increased the cost of maintaining an SUV. The gasoline unit was aggregated only with a 6-band "automatic".

The Land Rover Discovery 3 departs from the tradition of its predecessors and has a monocoque body with an integrated frame and fully independent multi-link suspension front and rear, which increased the level of comfort when driving on public roads. Many Discovery fans feared that this would negatively affect the off-road vehicle's off-road ability, but their fears were quickly dispelled, and the terrain ResponseTM electronic transmission control system that frightened at first, on the contrary, gained popularity and respect among Discovery 3 owners over time.
Note that in Russia, cars manufactured before 2008 often had problems with ball bearings, steering tips and front suspension silent blocks, but later the British replaced them with reinforced versions, which immediately removed all the problems.

In the base, Land Rover Discovery 3 received a spring suspension, and in more expensive configurations it was equipped with an air suspension that allowed adjusting the ride height.
All SUVs sold in Russia were equipped with an all-wheel drive system with a 2-speed transfer case and a central center differential lock. In addition, the car received ABS, EBD, ETC and HDC systems.
Disc brakes (ventilated at the front) were used on all wheels, and the rack and pinion steering gear was supplemented by a hydraulic booster.

In Russia, the third generation of Land Rover Discovery was offered in three equipment options: "S", "SE" and "HSE". Already in the base, the car received 17-inch alloy wheels, front and side airbags, full power accessories, air conditioning, an audio system, a complex of electronic assistants, a vehicle tilt sensor and an additional engine heating system. The Land Rover Discovery 3 was discontinued in 2009 and was replaced by the fourth generation of the Discovery.
