Prius 30 in the winter in the snow. Hybrid and cold: should you buy a car with a hybrid engine before winter comes? Is it better to leave the car for the winter in the garage

3 years ago I bought myself a new Prius in the salon. For three years, I drove a lot on this car, the euphoria from the purchase passed, an understanding of many things came that were not visible at first, and the world of cars has changed noticeably. So it's time to write a report!

Now the mileage of the car is 43 tkm. Passed three MOTs.

Financial striptease

Car - 1365
Credit - 155
TO - 25 (10 + 10 + 10 + 5).
Gasoline - 43000 * 0.05 * 29 \u003d 62350
Tax - 1000 * 3
---
Total: 1.6 mega rubles.
The residual value of the car is approximately 850-950 kr.

Cost per kilometer (gasoline + then + breakdowns): 2.26 rubles / km
Cost of ownership (loss of price): 17,200 rubles / month

At the time of purchase, I received from the dealer everything I needed in the form of gifts - rubber on disks, mats, protective films, a pump and much more, so nothing was needed.

Under the cut mini-review and SHOCK! A PHOTO! Prius changes people!

Reliability

It is not the first time that the German TUV rating has recognized the Prius as the most reliable used car (proof). I had no reason to doubt this, nothing broke at all, not even a commonplace light bulb burned out. So there is nothing to write here.

There are no visible changes with the battery, as I could have traveled 2 km from the store, and now it may even swing a little. Acceleration is the same. (Before that there was a Prius at the age of 7-8 years, there was also).

Consumption

At first I tried to save money. If you try hard, you can get a consumption of 2.2l / 100 km, if you just drive at a constant speed, then 3.9-4.2 is quite realistic even on studded tires. But then it somehow got tired, because most of the time I had to drive along the highway, where the speed in the left lane is rarely less than 130 (Kievka at night). As a result, the flowmeter does not drop many thousands of kilometers, it is 5.5 in summer, 6.5 in winter (summer cottages-traffic jams-city-traffic jams). If some wheel lowers to 1.5 atm, then immediately + a liter to the flow, the pressure sensor can not be installed :)

Winter

Oddly enough, I like driving a Prius in winter. Somehow it turns out that he can row well on the snow porridge. I don’t know why this happens, but it doesn’t skid with one wheel when the car is stuck, but alternately turns different wheels by half a turn, the driver just needs to hold the gas. The ABS is also tuned to snow - first it wedges in order to shovel a pile in front of it, then it runs over and wedges again. In comparison with the last Japanese of heaven and earth, he just rolled on the ice, and this one is scratched.

I also really liked the ability to switch between R and D without pressing the brake at low speeds - this is an ideal tool for rocking a car stuck in the snow, no other box allows you to do such a feint.

There are, however, and winter jambs. When there are two passengers in the car, you constantly have to turn on the windshield blower, otherwise the glass sweats. Once at -30, my engine cushion somehow slyly froze and until it warmed up, vibration was going on throughout the body.

Minuses

In the car, lousy insulation. You can hardly hear your engine, but the surrounding cars are excellent. Although no, you can hear your motor too, especially if you give full throttle - it comes out at about 5000 rpm and roars rather disgustingly. It only saves that the revs do not change during acceleration, so if you close your eyes, you might think that you are on the plane :) Another disease was discovered - something rattles in the trunk all the time. It seems like everyone else is treated by gluing the floor cover with rubber bands, but so far they have not reached it.

Vyalenko accelerates. When I just bought it, I almost always left the first traffic light among my classmates on the motor. But in three years Moscow was flooded with turbo codes and life became sadder.

The car is poorly customizable. The radio tape recorder for 100,500 thousand does not have a video input, the navigation firmware update costs 10 rubles, you cannot get any tuning for a reasonable price. There was no option when buying, no money can buy real leather, electric seat adjustment, heated washer or adaptive light.

The attitude on the road as to a Corolla is usually indifferent, which is logical (and the price is twice as high). And I also took a red car and apparently because of this many people think that a woman is driving. Maybe there are even some advantages in this (if I suddenly screw it up, it will not cause resentment), but I will never take a red car anymore.

Non-disconnectable electronics. I wanted to drift on some very slippery ice, but nothing happened - the car goes like on rails, it is impossible to skid. Grinding with wheels at the start is also prohibited. Everything bumps into an aggressive VSC +, which also tries to turn the steering wheel for me. In real life, the system once caught the front axle drift, which probably saved from an accident.

Still, it seems to me, the potential for traction control is not very much revealed. I'm sure this machine can do more. There are, of course, eco and power modes, but in reality they only affect climate control, and the acceleration of the car will be the same. But it would be possible to make, for example, a mode when at first the battery is forcibly charged. and then the car fires. Or the ability to turn a car into a mobile power generator.

pros

One plus I realized only when I began to look for another car and walk on test drives - the absence of a kickdown. When you are driving at low speed and suddenly you need to accelerate sharply. then when the gas is pressed sharply on the automatic transmission and CVT, a kickdown occurs, then a roar is heard from under the hood, and then you just feel the acceleration. In the Prius, the acceleration happens instantly after pressing the gas ... like garbage, but I've already tested about 10 cars and everywhere I am now enraged by the kickdown. It's as if they took away some familiar function, say, electric mirrors - a trifle, and it is no longer possible to use manual adjustment.

I took the Prius because it is a "Gadget Machine," as a work colleague called it. And damn it, he's right! I am one of those people who always bought myself the last smartphone, when it was not yet mainstream, and today I am already trying on Google glasses and other computer watches. The Prius paid off in this sense - I wrote reviews about it and filmed a video. That is why I am inclined to place the cost of ownership in a separate column of expenses, because a new gadget is bought for the sake of the gadget, and not for the sake of the fact that four cores will actually make calls four times more efficient.

What I like most about the Prius' gadgets, of course, is the "airplane" acceleration without switching and the ability to silently ride through underground parking lots. I like the space salon very much, especially in the evening. You sit, and you are surrounded by buttons and screens, everywhere everything is shining, flashing.

In my case, the car has four standard displays - navigation, speedometer-flowmeter-hybrid cartoon, projection and climatic. Another auxiliary translucent screen is activated on top of the speedometer part when you touch the buttons on the steering wheel. Almost any function can be controlled from the steering buttons. True, all this has to be paid for with a massive center console, inside which, however, there is a compartment for bags (under the gear knob).

Still constantly pleased with the trunk. If the rear seats are folded down, a flat floor a la double is formed. Once I bought furniture for our office from Ikea. 8 large tables, armchairs, shelving, board and much more. After I loaded all this, an awesome man approached me, who said that he would never have thought that all this could be shoved into a car. Well ikea, figly :) And once again I carried a two-seater Korean stool in the trunk, also without a bullet.

Travels
Once we drove with a Prius on our own to Latvia. Gasoline there is twice as expensive as ours, and you can take only one 10 liter canister with you. So, I managed to leave there for a week without refueling, although we drove pretty much (from the border to Jurmala, every day Jurmala-Riga, then back). I felt like a kind of hacker, although just before leaving the country I filled in 10 liters in case of a long time at customs.

Parting

But, as it often happens with gadgets, I decided that it was time to say goodbye. Prius will sell in February 14th year and take myself something new. I want something bigger. Traveled on classic cars (Ford Explorer, Highlander, GLK 220 CDI, KIA Mohave, Superb DSG) - I didn't like them all. Looking at the Highlander Hybrid, RX450H and Outlander PHEV.

Finally, a photo about how friendship with a Prius can change a person in just one year! (OMG! Two years!)

UPD: I also want to add about new cars. This was my first dealer new car. Until something changes in this world. the last one. I didn’t experience any profit from the fact that the car was completely new, but there were many disadvantages: 1. more worries for a new car - no matter how they stole, no matter how they scratched. 2. When buying a new car, you need to communicate with dealers, most of whom are examples of greed and stupidity. 3. A new car loses value faster.

There are many myths about a hybrid car in Belarus. It is believed that such cars do not tolerate winter well, the interior is not well heated and there is a great risk of not starting in winter. Therefore, the demand for hybrids in autumn is small. Are the fears true?

The site understood the nuances of winter operation of hybrids with the director of the auto center "TITAN Motors" Mikhail Arefiev. According to Mikhail, after the frost drops to -26 C, Prius goes to a car service in a tow truck. But this happens only because the car is not serviced in a timely manner, or its owner does not follow simple rules of operation.

1. Can the hybrid vehicle be kept outdoors in winter, or is it worth moving it to a warm garage?

It's not worth worrying about a hybrid car, even if it's freezing outside the window and icicles stuck to the hood. The main thing is not to leave the car overnight with a half-discharged 12-volt (auxiliary) battery, otherwise it will freeze and the capacity may decrease over time. Also, before the start of the cold season, it is worthwhile to diagnose the high-voltage battery, which is also desirable to keep in a charged state in frosty conditions, at least 70%.

2. Is it better to leave the car in the garage for the winter?

This doesn't make much sense, unless the owner intends to drive in winter at all. In the latter case, the hybrid vehicle needs to be started approximately every three weeks to recharge the battery. If it stays all winter in the garage without "charging", then in spring, with a very high probability, the vehicle will be able to start only at the service, and some cells of the high-voltage battery may be on the verge of working capacity.

3. Is it possible to "light up" a hybrid car and how to do it correctly?

You can "light up". Take the Toyota Prius as an example. Starting the Prius is not possible unless the on-board system is working, which in turn is powered by a small 12-volt battery located in the trunk. To revive it, you just need to put the wires on the battery of another car, wait a little for the battery to gain strength and try to start. At the same time, it is not necessary to gas on the donor car, as is done with the usual "lighting".

4. Can I drive in winter using electric motors only?

For hybrids, it is normal for you to drive at low speeds only on electric motors, and the ICE serves to charge the battery. But in general, driving only on electric motors is impossible even in summer: the motor-generator is powered by a high-voltage storage battery, the internal combustion engine works to charge it, and when the car's speed is above 30 km / h. If you drive without gasoline (with the engine not working), the high-voltage battery will be discharged to a critical state. When fully discharged, it becomes impossible to start the hybrid; this requires an expensive charger, which is only available at a specialized service station.

5. Why is it cold in hybrids in winter?

When the coolant level in the car drops slightly, the interior is no longer heated normally. This is due to a complex dual-circuit cooling system, which is dependent on the presence of a "coolant" in the system. Not many people monitor the level of antifreeze in just two expansion tanks, so in winter they often freeze in their hybrids. Also, the valve, which is responsible for removing heat from the electric motors and the inverter, which is very hot, may fail. In summer, the warm flow is diverted outside, in winter, when the heating button is pressed, it goes into the salon. The flow redirection valve may break and the car will be cold until the main engine warms up. And if the valve is stuck in the middle position, then there will be no heat at all.

6. What to look for when preparing a hybrid vehicle for winter?

Problems with conventional cars are common with hybrids, for example, the throttle valve, which can freeze, or poor spark plugs and ignition coils. For hybrids, the source of problems can be electric pumps, of which there are three in Toyota Prius and Lexus RX. Each of them requires diagnostics of the condition at least once a year. You also need to check the operation of the electric air conditioner compressor using a special oil.

7. How reliable is a hybrid vehicle, is it corroded, and how long will the battery last if the vehicle is used all year round?

When creating a Toyota Prius, a great durability resource was laid. The Japanese were pioneers and did not want to ruin their reputation. Even in our conditions, rust is very rare on Toyota Prius - as a rule, it is a broken car. A Prius came to the auto center with a mileage of 480 thousand km, and the battery worked well. As a rule, problems with these cars are caused by unskilled intervention of non-professionals.

Dear users!

One of the most exciting decisions in the automotive industry is the emergence of hybrid engines. Cars of this kind are designed to minimize fuel consumption, as well as serve faithfully to their owner. Among the most popular hybrid vehicles is the Toyota Prius ZVW30. Today it is considered one of the best in its class. But there is also a perception that the third generation Prius is a pretty mediocre car with a lot of problems. Therefore, in order not to voice specific information unfounded, it is worth finding out: what disadvantages the Prius has, and whether it is worth buying it.

Technical characteristics:

  • Modification (engine): 1.8 CVT (100 kW (134) hp / 5200 rpm), Multipoint injection, hybrid gasoline;
  • Transmission: ECVT (variator)
  • Maximum speed: 180 km / h;
  • Suspension type:
  • Front suspension - Independent - McPherson;
  • Rear Suspension - Semi-independent
  • Clearance: 140 mm
  • Tire sizes and rim: P195 / 65 R15
  • Body type: Hatchback
  • Average fuel consumption: 1.8 CVT - 3.9 l / 100 km.
  • Carrying capacity: 435 kg.

The Toyota Prius easily took the lead in hybrid vehicles. It was easy, as there is little competition in this market segment. A hybrid car with a fairly competitive modification was able to put on the market only by Honda, but still Toyota bypassed it in all respects.

But, if we take into account all the cars of this class, Toyota Prius will be approximately in the middle of the rating. Now the sales of this car are stable, but they are far from reaching the manufacturer's targets. A number of shortcomings and frankly weak points make drivers regret their choice.

Most interestingly, the first generation Prius, which was released for the first time back in 1997, has the least claims. The second generation Prius in the NHW20 body and the third generation Prius in the ZVW30 body were developed from it.

Weaknesses of the third generation Toyota Prius

  • Fuel system;
  • Hybrid system;
  • Inverter and inverter cooling pump;
  • Salon.

Let's analyze in more detail ...

Fuel system.

First of all, Prius owners note that the car's fuel consumption is much higher than the declared one. When repairing the fuel system, a new unpleasant surprise awaits. For some reason, the fuel filter was placed in the gas tank, which makes repairs very difficult and raises the price.

The first thing that catches your eye right after the purchase (according to eyewitnesses-owners) is the higher fuel consumption than stated. But ... it's worth noting right away that the indicators announced by the manufacturer are achievable during normal driving on city roads or highways. In reality, the operation of the audio system, air conditioner or stove (in summer and winter, respectively) and other factors that increase consumption are also added to this. Without this, the numbers on the information board correspond to those stated. The only exceptions are cars whose mileage has exceeded 250-300 thousand km - here you can really talk about increased fuel costs.

Hybrid system.

It is, in principle, all the same as in the second generation Prius, but of a higher level. The electric motor is now more powerful, its connection with the gasoline engine is still provided by the planetary gear. But this led to the appearance of excessive noise at high revs. Also, the updated system works very unevenly at idle.

According to the manufacturers, this car is fully intended for city trips and with proper operation and timely maintenance, it will not need repairs and replacement of any parts for a long time. In fact, it turned out to be the opposite.

There are two possible variants of malfunctions that may arise during the operation of the car.

  • The first one is an inverter breakdown: the cost for this part is quite high, but ... when you buy it from an authorized dealer. Practice shows that buying parts in ordinary auto parts stores is much cheaper, so the solution to this issue does not seem difficult.
  • The second sore of this engine is the batteries: when one or a pair of elements goes out of work, the official workshops will insist on a complete replacement of the entire unit, which will come out at a pretty penny. In fact, you can replace (even independently, after reading the necessary information) non-working elements and continue driving.
  • Problems when operating in low temperature areas Prius equipped with a lithium-ion battery, after 2010 they began to be installed on Toyota Prius PHV (35 body), Prius Alpha ZVW-40 (7 seats), Prius V, Prius +, as well as the fourth generation Prius (ZVW51). Li-Ion has become much more compact due to which in some models it is located between the front seats, but it is sensitive to frost, unlike nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH).

Inverter and inverter cooling pump.

The cooling pump for the inverter has pronounced drawbacks, as it often breaks down. The driver must carefully monitor its condition, as the inverter also instantly overheats and must be replaced.

Frequent breakdowns are observed in the cooling pump of the inverter if, for any reason, the level of antifreeze in the tank drops. A pump malfunction causes the inverter to overheat and, of course, it becomes completely unusable and requires a complete replacement. The price of the inverter, if it can be found, reaches one hundred thousand rubles.

Advice! Prius owners should be alert to the presence of antifreeze in the pump reservoir and any warning signals from the vehicle computer. The cooling system is a weak point of this model and can bring a lot of surprises.

For some unknown reason, the front panel of the Toyota Prius was made following the example of sports models. The owner of such a machine does not really like this, especially since there are many buttons on it in an inconvenient order. The designers didn't bother with an intuitive control panel, they just wanted to maximize the second generation version.

In the process of using the car, it becomes clear that substandard materials were used for the interior trim. They peel off by themselves, and the plastic parts begin to rattle.

The main disadvantages of Toyota Prius 30 2009–2015 release

There are a number of common disadvantages that you should definitely pay attention to:

  1. Ground clearance too low;
  2. Sludge brake caliper;
  3. Steering rack. Here is a pig in a poke: for someone it works properly even with a high mileage, and for someone it breaks down already at 50-70 thousand kilometers. But this is really the weak side of the Prius, so when buying it you just need to be ready .;
  4. High chance of damaging the hybrid part in an accident;

Conclusion.

However, in the third generation, the Prius really became faster and more powerful. It remains to be hoped that in the next serial releases the manufacturers will modify this model.

When buying a Toyota Prius, it is necessary to carry out a complete computer and routine diagnostics. The specialist must determine the degree of wear and tear on all components and systems of the vehicle. Repairing even one unit is a very expensive game. Body inspection is also mandatory at all joints.

When buying a new or used Toyota Prius, you need to remember that not every specialist can handle it. It is best to inspect and repair it at specialized services, and they can not be found in every city.

P.S .: Dear car owners, if you have noticed systematic breakdowns of any parts, units of this model, then let us know in the comments below.

    20 Prius from Europe 147,000 of my 30,000 km 2008 release in my operation 4 years in Siberia. After reading, I replaced the pump (is it necessary) the backlight lamps and 1 time the low beam were on twice. The right hub of the front wheel made a noise - replaced, 1 time replaced the small cumulator. I change the oil filter in the engine as expected. as bought 1 time changed in the box. There is an interesting joke, if you miss the cut-off of the low beam when parking (I myself am a little deaf and I do not hear the squeak when I exit) in winter, the small Akum did not have enough low beam and side light for 4 hours. the machine can be started with a battery from any screwdriver. one truth is not conveniently interfered with by the button for opening the hood. it must be kept pressed (put a bracket next to it that does this - it will hold down the hood opening button) and VU aliaayayayayayayaya two wiring with crocodiles on + in the safety block and any bolt of the body. starts up. At the same time, the relay and the vacuum amplifier system start to turn on first.
    The body is coldish, or rather it warms up for a long time in winter. consumption on the highway 5.2 l / 100km. in the city 9l / 100km, but in the city I have a very low mileage from home to work 1.7km and stop for 4 hours then again 1.7km with this cycle, the consumption is large ooooooy 9l in winter, naturally, even the engine does not really warm up.
    LIKE 30 ka son. oddly enough, I like it less than 20 ka (subjective assessment).
    Cool car

    I bought a Prius 30 2014 with 130,000 km mileage. Now 132,000 km. Consumption while in the city and the highway is 4.5-5.5 liters on average. The machine is very free.

    My car in 2010 took 2 years old from Europe. The ground clearance is very low. There are no breakdowns. From sores do not keep the doors when you open and the wear of the rear brake guides for 5 years. Everything. Listen to this scribble more. Yes, I killed the battery myself ahead of schedule on the 180 thousand run out of fuel, but I was in a hurry. He stung the gas to the floor and completely landed the VVB for which it was not designed. Ate out the ramp. There are 28 of them to replace 14 elements. I decided to put a new battery. It's all.

    This writing has nothing to do with reality!
    A dozen years ago I took this car with the goal of driving for a couple of months until I found a replacement for my SUV, but that was not the case. I fell in love with this car! You can drive at least a thousand kilometers on it and not get tired, everything is intuitive. To break something you have to be a complete failure. The battery has a resource of 7-9 years, it does not affect the mileage, on the contrary, because Nickel-metal hydride batteries do not like downtime and fail faster due to long downtime. The flow rate will be as you want, from 4 l / 100 km to 7.5 more you simply cannot. I always ride with the pedal to the floor and I can't do it. The pump is electronic and even if it dies, the car will immediately report it. An inverter can be bought from Japan for disassembly for a penny, a battery with a partial replacement will cost 20 rubles, but in 7 years you will spend more on maintenance with a car with a traditional internal combustion engine. On the Prius, maintenance is about changing the oil and filters! No rollers, belts, whistles, current slats and other hemorrhoids! He rides at least at a low or at a high speed very briskly, cars of 400 horses stopped me at traffic lights to find out how many horses I have. And the horses in the Prius 30 on the internal combustion engine 99 and on the electric generator 37, and the tax is only 99. The high mass does not allow you to get stuck on soft snow and other difficulties, but if you sit down, take a tighter cable. At high speed, the car goes like on rails, the responsiveness is just awesome. The only negative is the clearance of 140 mm, but this is easily solved by installing spacers. So stop nightmare people !!! Just ride it once and you yourself will understand everything!

    It took a long time to buy this car. 30ka from France, 140, mine 20. I only change the oil. New car condition. Put spacers +2 cm. Very cool dynamics, the trunk is something. I have never had this cleanliness, I keep everything under the floor. Consumption in summer 4.8-5.2, in winter ~ 6.8-7.2. Boring car - said a friend in the service. Because it does not break, then added
