The plans to see a traditional family minivan in the parking lot near the office of the Russian representative office of Ford did not materialize. Instead, I saw a snow-white S-MAX in the Sport configuration, with low bumpers, side "skirts", 18-inch alloy wheels, tinted glass in the rear row and a panoramic roof. This is no longer just a minivan, but a real sports van!

Inside, the Sport trim features red stitching on the seats, steering wheel and leather door panels. Ergonomics of the driver's seat at a height. Landing high, excellent visibility. Front seats with developed lateral support, upholstered in leather and Alcantara, hold tenaciously even in sharp turns.

After restyling in 2010, the S-MAX was one of the first to try on the latest gadgets of kinetic design, which has become the hallmark of the appearance of Ford cars. The bumper now has a more aggressive air intake and LED running lights, while the taillights have a richer ruby \u200b\u200bhue and a modern look.

In the interior, the sporty theme was continued in the red stitching of the trim of the seats, steering wheel, door trims and gearshift lever, and the seats themselves are covered with leather in combination with Alcantara. Stylists have not forgotten about the floor rugs, which have a red edging. The seats themselves are tenacious, with a good profile and pronounced lateral support, the driver is equipped with an electric drive and memory.

The top engine for the Ford S-MAX is a 240-horsepower 2.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline unit. With such a herd, Ford has good acceleration dynamics. As an alternative, there are a couple of atmospheric engines, one diesel and a 200-horsepower version of the same 2.0-liter EcoBust.

After the update, the place of the traditional analog dashboard in all versions except the basic one was taken by the HMI panel with a color screen, borrowed from the Ford Mondeo. The front panel is made of pleasant soft plastic and decorated with panels a la piano lacquer, as well as inserts "like carbon". The door panels are upholstered in leather, and in the high-end versions, the noble cold-white LED lighting spreads through the interior of the S-MAX.

The rear sofa consists of three separate armchairs, each of which has individual adjustments for the length and backrest angle. There is enough space in the back row for three adult passengers.

The third row of seats is located under the boot floor, but even if the riders of the second row are pushed forward as much as possible, only children will be at ease in the gallery. At the same time, the volume of the trunk becomes minimal - only 285 liters. By folding the two rear seats, the space becomes significantly more - 854 liters, and if you remove the second row, the cubic capacity of the cargo compartment will grow to 2000 liters.

LED daytime running lights are available on Titanium and Sport versions. In addition, the Sport trim features more aggressive bumpers, side skirts, a rear spoiler and 18-inch alloy wheels. A rear view camera can only be installed in conjunction with a navigation system.

The hood of the test S-MAX housed a top-end 2.0-liter turbo engine of the EcoBoost family with a capacity of 240 hp. and a maximum torque of 340 Nm. Acceleration is powerful and smooth: from the very first meters, the S-Max makes it clear that it is not a joke with it. According to the passport, the 240-horsepower minivan from Ford accelerates in 7.9 seconds. At the same time, the acceleration is equally powerful both from the spot and from the speed, however, when overtaking, it is better to keep the tachometer needle at least 2000 rpm, otherwise there is a risk of "falling through" into the turbo lag and losing precious seconds.

The PowerShift dual clutch transmission runs smoothly and on time. The downshift is quick, without delay, but in kick-downs, when you need to jump a few steps down, the transmission thinks a little longer than you expect.

Unlike the Ford Galaxy sibling for the S-MAX, the third row of seats is an option. Depending on the configuration, the boot volume varies from 285 to 2000 liters. There are plenty of opportunities for transformation.

The optional continuous stiffness control system has three operating modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport. In "comfort" the S-MAX as much as possible hides the vibrations transmitted by the 18-inch low-profile tires 235/45 R18. However, the Sport version makes itself felt, and even in the most gentle mode on potholes, more riders are shaken by the order. At the same time, in "Comfort" Galaxy sways on the waves of asphalt, like a yacht in a light storm.

When you press the Sport button, all four shock absorbers are clamped, reactions to small bumps are aggravated to the limit, hinting that large holes are best avoided altogether. But now the Ford S-MAX runs like on rails. Any passenger car will envy a grip in a turn, and there are practically no rolls. The power steering wheel pleases with excellent information content and good feedback, the effort on the brake pedal is what you need. However, all these delights can be fully felt only on high-quality roads. The Sport version of the Ford S-MAX is a great family car for Europe.

The PowerShift dual-clutch transmission is crisp and only “brakes” when shifting a few steps down. The suspension control system is installed only in tandem with ESP and has three modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport. An optional navigation system with a 7-inch screen will cost 50 thousand rubles.

In Russian conditions, I am more impressed by the usual suspension, and damaging an 18-inch disc or scratching an elegant body kit with our roads is easy. The civilian S-MAX steers only slightly worse, and provides much more comfort. Yes, and a diesel is needed here! Feeding a 240-horsepower EcoBoost is not an easy task, in addition, the tandem of a diesel engine and a PowerShift box works much more smoothly. It is a pity that for its minivans, Ford offers only the already familiar 2.0-liter diesel with 140 hp. A 200-horsepower 2.2-liter unit would come in handy here. But it is available for Mondeo hatchbacks.

Russian prices for Ford S-MAX start at 985,000 rubles. The basic version of Trend is equipped with a 2.0-liter petrol engine with a capacity of 145 hp, 5-speed "mechanics" and a minimum set of options. The most affordable 140-horsepower diesel version with manual transmission will cost at least 1,130,500 rubles. The surcharge for PowerShift is 78.5 thousand rubles.

The price of the Ford S-MAX varies from 985,000 to 1,800,000 rubles. There are three equipment levels to choose from, several motors, two gearboxes and a wide range of optional equipment.

Cars equipped with a 203 hp EcoBoost turbo engine are available starting with the Titanium trim and only with PowerShift. You can't buy such a car for less than 1,311,000. Of the more budgetary proposals, there is the S-MAX with a naturally aspirated 2.3-liter gasoline engine with 161 hp. and automatic transmission. The price of such a car starts at 1,105,500 rubles. The 240-horsepower Ford S-MAX Sport, which has been on the test, with a large list of additional options costs 1,700,000 rubles.

Almost immediately after its appearance, the S-Max won the most prestigious international competition European Car of the Year and became the only minivan to receive this prize in the past 15 years.

How did the S-Max win over spoiled journalists from all over the world six years ago? Huge volumes of passenger and luggage compartment, high level of comfort and rich equipment? Certainly. Ease of use in a modern metropolis, despite its large dimensions? Not without it. The general balance of all the characteristics necessary for a family car? Of course, this too.

A choice of four petrol engines of 2 and 2.3 liters with a power range from 145 to 240 hp. and one two-liter 140-horsepower diesel. The drive is front, and there are as many as three gearboxes: mechanics, automatic and PowerShift "robot".

But what really impressed the jury was the S-Max with a supercharged B5254T3 engine. He impressed them with his dynamics, which was provided by a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine borrowed from the sports model Focus ST (originally developed by Volvo).

Together with the suspension tuned for a sporty way, this power unit gave the Es-Max a unique "peppercorn". Two hundred twenty horsepower for a family car - is it a joke ?! And this, mind you, is not some typical American "full van" with a V-shaped "eight" like the Chevy Astro, GMC Savana or Ford Econoline, but a minivan with a European character and appearance.

That S-Max would steer and accelerate with the intensity of a powerful sedan when needed, but the rest of the time it was a cozy and comfortable family car.

There is nowhere steeper

As strange as it may sound, but in the details of both the old and the updated "Es-Max" it is easy to trace ... the classic canons of American customization! In fact, this is a radically altered Ford Galaxy! The EUCD platform, also originally Swedish, is identical, but the body is almost completely redesigned. The roof, for example, is shortened in height by about 7 centimeters (in customizer slang, this operation is called chop top) and is rounded down at the rear of the car. And fake air intakes are cut out in the front fenders.

From "Galaxy" "Max" got only the head optics, the hood, and the lower parts of the doors. At the same time, S-Max can be additionally "dressed" in a sports "suit", including more aggressive bumpers and side skirts, as well as eighteen-inch wheels with a pattern like the Focus ST. And under the hood, a new, even more powerful engine is now installed: 2 liters, 4 cylinders, 240 hp. and 340 Nm!

All these changes turn the "top" S-Max into a black sheep against the background of all other modern minivans, utterly saturated with everyday life. The uniqueness of "Max" - in its striking appearance, supported by a predisposition to impressively fast driving. It's as cool as a family minivan can be!

Minivan without discounts

Despite all the aesthetic and dynamic advantages, the S-Max is also incredibly good from a practical point of view!

Minivan, as they say, it is also a minivan in Africa. Places - more than enough! The internal volume is so large that a standard air conditioner can hardly cope with heating such an amount of air. But on the "optional" third row you sit, if not warm, then at least with comfort - even the seats are adjustable! Moreover, it will be comfortable not only for children, but also for adults of average build - there is enough space and the seats are just as comfortable as those of the passengers sitting in front. But there are also disadvantages - it is inconvenient to get into the third row because of the narrow passage between the door arch and the pushed back seat, the air at the feet of the passengers of the third row warms up very slowly (in severe frosts, it will most likely be uncomfortable), and the music is heard only distantly ...

But if necessary, you can get rid of the third row by a simple way of folding the seats, including each one separately. And now, instead of 285 liters, the useful volume is 1171 liters. And if you add each second-row seat, you get exactly 2000 liters ... Abyss!

However, I am not yet a family man, so I am more impressed by the dynamic characteristics and practical options than by the passenger and cargo capacity. In the maximum configuration, the S-Max is fully crammed with all sorts of useful and not very useful devices and simply stylish solutions: seats - with adjustable heating, ventilation and memory of settings, a panoramic roof, in the side mirrors - a proprietary BLIS blind spot monitoring system ...

In general, the list of options is impressive: from 3900 rubles for double locking of locks to 96,500 rubles for an entertainment system with a DVD player. Although I would limit myself to a huge glass roof, a Premium Sound audio system and an IVD CDC stabilization system (complete with "three-mode" shock absorbers, a system for assisting at the start of the rise, keyless entry and folding mirrors), which personally proved to me "professional".

The minivan passed the EuroNCAP crash test back in 2006 and received a five-star safety rating.

But for a chic Alcantara interior with red stitching and profiled seats you don't have to pay extra - they are included by default in the equipment list of the Sport version. Apparently, this is how Ford wants to justify the numerous reproaches for the dullness and boring of the saloons of the pre-styling S-Max.

When you first find yourself behind the wheel of "Max", you do not leave a distinct feeling that something is wrong here. Ergonomics is absolutely not minivan! A low seating position, a sporty steering wheel, correctly positioned pedals and a varnished PowerShift lever - all this brings back memories of another Ford - Mondeo Sport and does not at all resemble the classic "sit high, look far away" characteristic of family cars. Although it is also possible to "look far" in the "Max" - the visibility is gorgeous. You cannot find fault with the buttons and control levers and do not linger on them. And the main focus is the massive handbrake handle, more like the handle of a travel suitcase.

This minivan is ideally suited not only for carrying passengers and luggage, even in the cramped conditions of a metropolis, but also for maximizing its own speed potential!

240-horsepower S-Max gains "hundred" in 7.9 seconds! And its average consumption is only 10 liters of AI-95 per 100 kilometers.

"Dad, give me a ride to school!"

Bright xenon headlights rapidly appear in the mirrors, and a moment later the silhouette of a large snow-white minivan sweeps through the left window and, blinking goodbye with stop signals, dissolves behind the apex of the next turn. This is how the S-Max could be described by the half-asleep "eyewitness" summer residents, who gradually crawled along the winding country paths during our test drive.

The S-Max is amazingly fast and obedient, which is why all the time there was a desire not just to drive, but to really drive it! I would never have thought that the minivan would be remembered for its extremely light behavior and handling, achieved not at the expense of smoothness. Powerful American "vans" due to their significantly greater mass (compare, the weight of the S-Max'a - 1676 kg, the weight of the Chevy Astro - 1954 kg) and much simpler suspension designs will not be able to compete with the "Max" in any straight races. nor racing on winding paths. And even the omnipotent V-shaped "eights" will not help them!

The S-Max's only real enemy is the Opel Zafira OPC. But the "Zafira" of the previous generation is no longer on sale, and the Germans have not yet prepared a "hot" version of the new. The opponents have the same power - 240 hp, and the Zafira's torque is only 20 Nm lower, so the cars are almost identical in dynamics.

Of course, for this it is worth praising not only the powerful and responsive, without turbolags and pits, the Ford engine, but also the six-speed "robot" PowerShift with two clutches. The preselective transmission is always ready, selects the optimal gears and engages them in one stroke of the eyelashes.

But the biggest difference between the two rivals is that the German car remains a minivan in terms of handling, in contrast to the Europeanized American with its unusual Control Blade multi-link rear suspension and shock absorbers with variable stiffness.

Structurally, such a suspension with sickle-shaped levers and separate springs and shock absorbers allows not only to lower the center of gravity and strictly distribute working functions (the levers are responsible for handling, shock absorbers and springs - only for comfort), but also to gain additional space for the trunk and reduce noise from the rear wheels ... True, in front of "Es-Max" the ubiquitous "MacPherson".
