Faults and engine repair QG15DE

The Nissan QG15DE engine was developed from the 1.6 liter QG16DE and was intended to replace the GA15DE. In the QG16DE cylinder block, the bore has been reduced from 76 mm to 73.6 mm. Accordingly, other pistons were used, and the compression ratio increased to 9.9. Otherwise, it is the same QG16DE. To reduce the toxicity of the exhaust, the EGR system is used here, and a mechanical throttle valve is also used.

Since 2002, after some update, the engines have received a variable valve timing system on the CVTC intake shaft, an electronic throttle valve and the EGR valve has been removed.

QG15DE motors were equipped with a timing chain, replacement is carried out approximately every 150 thousand km, sometimes earlier.
The QG15DE was not equipped with hydraulic lifters, so the valves need to be adjusted every 40-50 thousand km.

The engine was not produced for too long and for some time, the QG15DE was removed from the hoods of Nissan cars, and replaced by the newer HR15DE.

Nissan QG15DE engine problems and malfunctions

The QG16 and QG18 engines are similar in design to the QG15, so their problems are the same: it won't start, high fuel consumption, noise, whistling, etc. Details can be found.

Nissan QG15DE engine tuning

Chip tuning

Your best bet is to buy a QG18DE engine and swap it. Tuning a 1.5 liter vegetable engine is not a good idea. However, if you have nothing to do, you can buy a 4-2-1 exhaust system and do a chip tuning. This will give about 10 hp. and aggressive sound, the rest is superfluous.

Engine oil reduces friction between sliding surfaces, which reduces wear on pistons with piston rings and cylinders, bearings and valve train parts.

Engine oil is also used for micro-sealing between pistons, piston rings and cylinder walls, as there is always a gap of a few microns between these parts. Thanks to the additional sealing effect of the oil, the high gas pressure resulting from combustion is transferred without loss to the piston crown and converted into kinetic energy. In this way, optimum engine power is achieved.

Another function of the engine oil is to provide additional cooling for the engine. During the combustion of fuel, only a quarter of the released energy can be used for forward motion, part of the energy leaves the engine with exhaust gases, the rest of the thermal energy must be removed by the coolant and engine oil. For example, a piston can only be cooled with engine oil. On the one hand, heat from the pistons is transferred through the piston rings and sealing oil to the working surfaces of the cylinders, then to the coolant. On the other hand, the oil sprayed into the crankcase directly cools the pistons. Accordingly, each bearing of the crankshaft, camshaft, etc. cooled by the flow of oil passing through it. The heat stored in the engine oil is transferred through the walls of the oil pan to the air flow around it.

Multigrade oils

Modern oils are oil refined lubricants. But before a lubricant refined from oil turns into a motor oil, oil manufacturers add special additives to it, which at the end of the production process make up 20% of the oil formulation.

The additives protect the oil from oxidation and prevent the formation of foam at high engine speeds. Some of the most important additives are viscosity index improvers, which are long molecular chains that swell when heated and shrink again when cooled. These additives act in such a way that the oil adjusts to the temperature of the engine and covers several viscosity grades at once. These additives also have a negative property: at high temperatures they lose most of their properties. In addition, water, fuel and combustion residues set a limit to the life of an engine oil. Mineral oil does not withstand the pressures and temperatures prevailing in the engine for long enough. Therefore, regular oil changes are not a luxury to be discarded, but a necessary standard to ensure the normal and long-term operation of your engine.

Synthetic oils

Synthetic oils are considered the most expensive, as they are made partly of artificial chemical compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. In doing so, only those molecules are selected that can optimally fulfill the required lubrication tasks. In practice, this means that these oils age much more slowly compared to mineral oils. They also evaporate more slowly and have high long-term stability, which means long-term retention of their original higher viscosity grade.

Purchase of engine oil

Ford recommends SAE 5W-30 (for SAE 10W-40 diesel) engine oils that meet ACEA A1-96, B-96 or Ford WSS-M2C912-A1 (for ACEA A3-96, B3-96 diesel ) (,). If you wish to use a different oil, it must be of API SH quality for gasoline engines (for diesel engines CC MC G5, PD2, API SH). Oils labeled API SC, SD, SE or SF can even interfere with the proper operation of your engine. If the oil meets the above criteria, oils from different manufacturers can be mixed with each other. You just have to take into account that the special qualities of the previous formulations may deteriorate over time. Each grade of oil has a special formulation of additives, the effect of which, when mixed with other oils, can deteriorate. For this reason, mixing mineral and synthetic oils is also not beneficial.

TECHNICAL GLOSSARY

Basic concepts. Oil classification systems

Viscosity.

This is the value for determining the fluidity of the oil. In winter, the engine oil must be so thin that after starting a cold engine, it immediately gets to all lubrication points. On the contrary, in summer it is necessary to use thick oil so that the oil film does not break at high temperatures.

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).

The fluidity of the oil is indicated by the viscosity grade. The corresponding grades are established by the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), for example, SAE 5W-30. The lower the first number, the easier the oil flows at low temperatures (W - winter). 0W oil flows at a temperature of –30 ° С, at 5W this indicator increases to –25 ° С, at 15 W - to –15 ° С. The higher the second digit, the better the oil will withstand high temperatures.

ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Européen dґAutomobiles).

Introduced in 1996, the European standard for oil, which replaced the CCMC standard. For gasoline engines there are groups A1 (not containing rectified alcohol), A2 (with a low content of rectified alcohol) and A3 (energy-saving oil). For diesel engines, oils are classified into B1, B2 and B3 groups.

CCMS (Comittée des Constructeurs dґAutomobiles du Marché Commun).

The specification consists of the letters "G" (petrol) and "PD" (diesel) and a number. The higher the number, the better the oil quality.

API (American Petroleum Institute).

The specification consists of the letter "S" (gasoline engine) or "C" (diesel engine) followed by a letter. The farther a letter is in the alphabet, the better the quality of the oil.

For this reason, you should not mix clean diesel oils with gasoline engine oils, in the worst case, you will cause serious damage to your engine.

Fiesta gasoline engines do not require the use of expensive synthetic oil. Ford recommends the use of SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade oil in our latitudes (see).

Oil consumption

If your Fiesta engine is in excellent technical condition, you must add a small amount of oil (0.25–0.5 L) at the prescribed oil change intervals, and the diesel engine is no exception. This rule is valid for all engines only if you are constantly changing the oil and your engine is not overloaded with an overly harsh, sporty driving style. Any engine uses a little oil. It is normal for some of the engine oil to burn out when the engine is running. Leaks in the engine, damaged timing gaskets, worn oil scraper rings, excessive piston-to-cylinder clearances, or excessive valve-guide and valve stem clearances dramatically increase normal oil consumption.

Blue exhaust gas plume - wear indicator

The blue exhaust train can directly identify one of the many engine problems. Even when the oil level remains unchanged, this does not indicate a normal engine condition: excess fuel and condensed water dilute the oil, which leads to a deterioration in its lubricating properties. This phenomenon is observed primarily in winter and when traveling over short distances - the engine rarely reaches its operating temperature, and moisture does not have time to evaporate from the oil. In this case, it is necessary to change the oil at shorter intervals: after 6000 km or once every six months.

The classification of light engine (for gasoline engines) oils by API can generally be understood as follows - with each next letter of the alphabet, the quality of the oil is higher.
