Malfunctions of electrical equipment

There are several reasons why an engine can stall:

  • malfunction of the ignition switch;
  • the fuse in the fuel pump circuit has blown;
  • no voltage is applied to the spark plugs;
  • one of the sensors has failed, on which the operation of the power unit depends.

First of all, it is recommended to check the operation of the fuel pump, when the ignition is on, it emits a quiet hum (comes from the back of the car). When there is no such sound, it is necessary to open the VAZ 2112 fuse box and check the condition of the fusible link No. 3, which closes the fuel supply relay circuit. If high-voltage wires or candles can be replaced, then the breakdown of the remaining elements must first be accurately diagnosed, which is hardly possible in the middle of the field. In addition, the throttle position or air flow sensor may break, causing the controller to switch the injector to emergency operation. Then the car can often stall at idle speed.

Fuel supply problems

The reason that the engine stalls at idle speed can be not only the fuel pump, but also the fuel filter that has not been changed for a long time.


If the element is completely clogged, then the amount of fuel passing through it is simply not enough for the normal operation of the power unit.

In the carburetor VAZ 2112 models, the cause of a lack of fuel can be the wear of the mechanical drive of the fuel pump or its diaphragms. It's easy to check: disconnect the fuel supply hose from the carburetor and direct it into a plastic bottle, then turn on the starter. Only an experienced electrician can artificially create such a signal, so it makes no sense to disassemble the injector on the way. In the carburetor model, it has a mechanical drive, in the injection models it is an electric pump that creates high pressure in the fuel rail. An electrically driven gasoline pump may not work due to the lack of supply voltage at its terminals. A blown fuse or broken wires may be the culprit in this situation. DIY repair and replacement of the mechanism

This procedure looks like this:

  1. First of all, disconnect the battery, and then disconnect the wire connected to the traction relay.
  2. Using a 13 wrench, you will need to unscrew the nut that secures the positive contact of the cable connected from the battery to the starter unit. The wire itself can then be dismantled.
  3. Next, you will need to unscrew the nuts with which the mechanism is attached to the clutch housing. To unscrew the nuts, you need a 15 wrench.
  4. After completing these steps, the starter unit can be removed. If you plan to replace it with a new one, then the replacement can be performed at this stage. When replacing, the location of the wires must be taken into account; in no case should they be confused. Therefore, before disconnecting the wires, it is advisable to mark them. If you do not want to change the mechanism, but plan to repair it, then you can start disassembling it.
  5. For disassembly, you need a 10 wrench, with it you can unscrew the nut located on the relay and dismantle the wire connected to the starter.
  6. The screws of the relay, which fix it to the starter unit, must be unscrewed with a key 8. Having done this, you can dismantle the relay.
  7. After removing the relay, you can see a gasket that is located between the front cover of the mechanism and the relay itself. For disassembly, it should also be removed, but when dismantling it, you should pay attention to its condition. If you see that the sealing element is worn out and its quality is low enough, then it is better to replace this component.
  8. When the seal is dismantled, it will be necessary to remove the spring, as well as the anchor.
  9. The next step is to remove the parking stud nuts.
  10. After completing these steps, you can dismantle the mechanism from the studs with the anchor itself. After that, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the internal parts and components of the device. For proper repair, you should diagnose the contacts, and also completely disassemble the brush assembly and check its condition. In general, the procedure for repairing the mechanism is quite complicated, so not every motorist chooses this method - sometimes it is easier to just replace the unit with a new one. In particular, this will be necessary in the event that the repair process has not yielded any results.

  • a hydrometer is used - the density of the electrolyte is measured (and the normal value of this value depends on the ambient temperature).

Another weak point is the ignition lock. It is not uncommon for a contact group to leave while standing. It usually just burns out. As a result, the positive contacts supplying voltage to the starter simply stop working. In this case, you will need to make a replacement. There is only one way to check the operation of the ignition lock - to disassemble it.

Failure of spark plugs

The first thing to think about after checking the presence of power and the ignition switch is the integrity of the spark plugs. Since even if there is a spark, they may not work correctly. It's easy enough to check them:

  • the candle is unscrewed from its block using a special key;
  • one of the candlesticks is put on it;
  • then it is necessary to "turn" the starter.

The spark between the center and side electrodes must be blue. If it is red or completely absent, the candle must be replaced. This part is a consumable. According to the regulations, regardless of the recommendations of the manufacturer of the candles themselves, they must be replaced every 10 thousand km.

Checking the ignition coils

Often, the absence of a spark on one of the candles is associated not with its failure, but with other reasons. For example, the problem is with the ignition coil. It is relatively easy to check it:

  • it is necessary to remove the coil from its seat;
  • it is necessary to check the internal resistance - this can be done using a conventional tester - the value should be from 0.0 to 0.3 Ohm;
  • then the primary windings are called.

If there are no readings or if they do not correspond to the rated ones, the coil should be replaced with a new one. Details like these are not intended to be repaired.

Starter check

Starters installed on the VAZ 2112 are relatively reliable. But if, after all the above checks, it was not possible to identify the reason for the inability to start, then it should be removed for diagnosis.

It will be extremely difficult to disassemble and check all its components on your own. First of all, you need to check: is voltage coming to the power contacts of the starter? Often it is a cable break, a hallway, and contact oxidation that makes it impossible to start the motor.
