Rosstandart has approved a new standard for state registration plates of vehicles: the corresponding order is posted on the official website of the department. The new GOST R 50577-2018 changes a similar document with the number 50577-93 and comes into force on January 1, 2019.
Rumors about changes in GOST have been circulating for a long time and are overgrown with new fantastic assumptions. However, in reality, the changes are not so significant and will not affect the bulk of motorists. They are important primarily for owners of cars imported from Japan and America through "gray" channels, owners of classic and racing cars, motorcyclists and owners of off-road motor vehicles.
According to Kommersant, which managed to get acquainted with the new document, ten new types of registration marks are being introduced in the country. For cars with non-standard plates for fixing numbers, two-line rear plates are legalized. They eliminate the need for adapters, and it will now be possible to drill non-standard holes for fasteners in the numbers, as long as the characters are not damaged.
The new format is intended for classic cars: a large “K” will appear in a separate section on the left. And for sports cars admitted on public roads, the sign of the same format will be distinguished by the letter "C". By the way, veteran cars with square areas for numbers can also be equipped with two-line signs.
A present for motorcyclists - reduced-size license plates: 190x145 mm instead of the current 245x160 mm. Such signs will be located on most of the fastening sites of imported motor vehicles, which have occupied this market almost entirely. The same numbers will become mandatory for ATVs and scooters with a working volume of over 50 cubes. It is not yet planned to equip small-sized equipment with state license plates. In addition, motor vehicles of foreign diplomatic missions will now have numbers with a red background, like their cars.
However, it is not worth hoping that the new license plates will protect you from the ubiquitous traffic cameras: manufacturers of such equipment claim that by the time the new GOST enters into force, the cameras will be supplemented with the recognition function of such numbers.

New car and motorcycle numbers may appear in Russia. The revision of the current GOSTs, as it became known to Kommersant, is being prepared by the structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. It is planned, in particular, to reduce the size of license plates for motor vehicles. Owners of American and Japanese cars may be given rear numbers of a new format, reminiscent of motorcycle ones. Retro and sports cars may also have their own state signs.
The development of a new version of the state standard for license plates was started by the Research Center for Road Safety Problems (SRC BDD) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. The head of the center, Oleg Portashnikov, told Kommersant about this.
The need to revise the current GOST is associated with a number of accumulated problems. In particular, most of the motorcycles sold in the Russian Federation are of foreign production. The plate under the rear plate, installed at the factory, is smaller in size than the Russian badge (245 mm by 160 mm). In the case when the bike is bought from official dealers, the company provides customers with adapter frames. However, as practice shows, they are not reliable enough.
GOST is also planned to be revised for passenger cars. In Russia, there are still a lot of foreign equipment (Japanese, American) with non-standard places for attaching signs. The regular holes on the sites sometimes do not coincide with the holes on the numbers, Oleg Portashnikov explained. The car owner does not have the right to drill additional holes in the license plate; a fine of 500 rubles is provided for this. For the convenience of citizens, you can be allowed to make holes in the room, but in certain places. It is also possible that the standard will include rectangular rear numbers for standard mountings of foreign cars.
The Interior Ministry is also thinking about adopting the Western experience in identifying retro cars. In some countries, the owners of such cars are issued special numbers that give the owner the right to operate the vehicle subject to a number of conditions: only on weekends, away from expressways, at a certain distance from the owner's place of residence, etc. The situation is similar with competition cars ... For them, it is also necessary to introduce a special type of state signs and special conditions of use, the authors of the initiative believe, since sometimes rallies take place on public roads.
The sketches of new numbers have already been developed in the Russian Automobile Federation (RAF), having sent them to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The press service of Rosstandart confirmed that the revision of GOST-50577 is included in the standardization plan for 2017. Public discussion of the first edition of the standard should begin in September 2017, and the final version will be ready in May 2018. The approval of the national standard is scheduled for October 2018, in 3-18 months after that the document may come into force.
The other day we reported that a new standard car numbers are being developed in Russia. Today, the first sketches of new license plates have appeared on the network, as well as fresh details of the expected changes.
The sketches of the new license plates were sent by the Russian Automobile Federation to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
The changes will affect both car and motorcycle license plates. In particular, numbers for motorcycles can be reduced in size, and for cars of American and Japanese production, numbers of a different format will be issued (since their standards for fixing numbers do not correspond to Russian ones).
Most motorcycles have a smaller number plate than the Russian sign. Therefore, the standard proposes to revise their sizes. The sketches of the new motorcycle numbers look like this.

The numbers for classic and sports cars are proposed to be supplemented with the letters "K" and "C", respectively.
These can be car license plates.
The possibility of transferring the region code from the right side of the number to the left is being considered, and even a complete rejection of the region code.
Such numbers are proposed to be made for mopeds and bicycles.
Also among the initiatives are replacing metal license plates with polymer ones, equipping them with microchips, as well as revising the requirements for license plate areas that can be drilled for installation in non-standard places.
Revision of GOST-50577 is foreseen in 2017. According to the latest information, public discussion of the first edition of the standard will begin in the fall of 2017, the final version will be ready in the spring of 2018, and approval is scheduled for October 2018.
In the wake of rumors about the impending replacement of Russian license plates, the studio of Artemy Lebedev presented its original development in this area. According to the founder of the design studio himself, such rooms can be found "Soon on all roads of the country".
As part of the new format, the developers propose to use on car numbers: 1 - a three-character abbreviation of the Russian region from the letters of the Latin alphabet, 2 - the color coat of arms of a region or city, 3 - a series of any two numbers, 4 - a free combination of four more permitted letters.
In the studio of Artemy Lebedev, they explain that the result will be about four and a half billion combinations, which will be enough for at least the next century.

Since that time, due to a number of serious shortcomings, including low information content and the need to frequently introduce new codes for different regions, there has been a need to change the current numbering system. For example, in Moscow alone, six different codes are already in use.

It is not surprising that even now on Russian roads there are occasional cars with Soviet license plates of both the 1980 and 1958 models. It is not surprising that the traffic police started talking about the imminent preparation of a new reform of car numbers.
The news about the new license plates has already caused some noise on the network. But how true is it that a new license plate standard will be introduced in 2019? In this we figured out the maximum depth of study of the issue.
What's wrong with the current numbers?
The current series and format can, in principle, be called outdated for a number of reasons:
- the image of the numbers itself has several problems - although it is adapted for the Latin alphabet, it still has Cyrillic letters, there is no electronics and high technologies (yes, this is quite relevant in 2019), identification occurs immediately by 3 components: letters, numbers and a region (if you do not pay attention to the inscription RUS);
- the set of symbols and numbers in modern numbers has long exhausted itself - back in the late 90s, additional regions had to be introduced, when possible combinations of characters simply ended in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Judge for the last point: the license plate uses 3 combinations of 12 letters of the Russian alphabet and one more of 3 numbers. That is, in each region (the numerical designation of the region, to be more precise) there can be 1,726,272 variants of such numbers. But only in cities with a population of one million there are slightly fewer cars. Add to this the ability to change the license plate for the same car, and we find that there will not be enough registration marks for everyone.
One thing becomes clear: the problem needs to be solved! So, the vastness of the network was full of information that the standard of new GRZs would allegedly be introduced in 2019. Is it true or not? Let's figure it out!
Is it true that new license plates will be introduced?
In fact, there are 2 main variations of this news - from completely delusional to eligible. Looking ahead, we note right away that none of the options for innovations with respect to a different format of numbers on December 22, 2019 is true. There are no normative legal acts: neither GOSTs, nor Federal Laws that come into legal force, which would put into effect a different image of the license plate.
What is the information about the new numbers? It differs only in the appearance and format of such signs.
4 letters, 4 numbers
One of the options for the new law on changed numbers suggests that instead of the current combination of 3 letters, 3 numbers and the region code, the new license plates will be:
- or 3 letters and 4 numbers,
- or 4 letters and 3 numbers.
This is how it will look:
At the same time, it is proposed to leave the set of letters the same - 12 symbols of the Russian alphabet. With a short calculation, you can calculate how much the number of various license plates in the new format will increase:
- 4 letters, 3 numbers - 20.7 million license plates,
- 3 letters, 4 digits - 17.3 million GRZ.
That is, the new combination gives about 10 times more options for state registration plates than the current format. This is good news, but it may not be enough either. For example, in Moscow, where there are the most cars, 12 regions and 3 variants of the numerical designation of regions have already been used - and this is more than both of the above options.
But this is not the main point. The very essence of the innovation is that it does not exist and is not planned yet. That is, this type of designation does not have a single normative act in the legislative framework.
"Proof": You will not find the new format of the numbers indicated in the photo above on any of the official websites of Russian legislators:
- nor on the website of the legislative base of the State Duma of the Russian Federation,
- nor in government discussion papers,
License plates with an interesting design
We are talking about the studio of Artemy Lebedev. A new design has been developed here in accordance with all the norms of "usability" (thoughtfulness) of registration signs ... And they even successfully sell new numbers. This is how they look:
Of course, this has nothing to do with the official replacement and release of license plates with such a design. The studio just released its series and sells it. Nevertheless, a number of publications took up this idea and released it as news about the revised LPG standard. So this is not true either.
What's the truth?
The truth is that, indeed, legislators are developing a new GOST, which should solve a number of problems with the current numbers. But we are not talking about the problem of lack of number options. The number of numbers, letters and their combinations, the location remains the same.
New forms of numbers will simply be developed, which will allow them to be installed on a number of vehicles with a non-standard installation site - this applies to many motorcycles, as well as cars imported from abroad. For example, Japanese or American, where the number is almost square. This is how it looks.
