Three-door hatchback Opel Astra H GTC. Opel Astra H with mileage: body corrosion, difficulties with the suspension and electrics Opel Astra hatchback specifications

08.03.2017

Opel Astra H (Opel Astra 3)- the third generation of a German company passenger car. The Astra has always been a popular model, but this generation especially delighted dealers with sales volumes. Recently, the number of used Opel Astra H has increased dramatically, of course, this can be attributed to the natural renewal of cars, since most car enthusiasts do this every 4-5 years. But it may be that the owners begin to get rid of their cars after a run of 100-150 thousand km. . And, here's what the real reason is, and what shortcomings are inherent in this car, now let's try to figure it out.

A bit of history:

The debut of the Opel Astra H took place in 2003 at the Frankfurt auto show, and in March 2004 the serial assembly of the car began. In the markets of different countries, it was also produced under the names Chevrolet Astra, Chevrolet Vectra, Holden Astra, Saturn Astra and Vauxhall Astra. The novelty was intended to replace the popular at that time, Opel Vectra B. In total, for the assault on the segment " C"Or, as they say, golf class, four bodies were produced based on the" Delta "platform developed by General Motors - three and five-door hatchback, sedan, station wagon and coupe.

For most of the CIS markets, the car was assembled at the Russian Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad, and since 2008 - at the General Motors car assembly plant in Shushary near St. Petersburg. The design of the car was developed by the director of the German design studio Opel in Rüsselsheim - Friedhel Engler, who is also the creator of the Opel Korsa. The production of the model stopped in 2009, this model was replaced by the Opel Astra J, but, even after the release of the new model, the popularity of the Opel Astra H did not diminish at all, therefore, it was decided to extend the production of this model (the car was produced until 2014 under the name Astra Family).

Weaknesses and disadvantages of the Opel Astra H with mileage

Unlike most competitors, the Opel Astra H has a fairly high-quality paintwork. The exceptions were cars made in Poland, on such copies the paint swelled and fell off in pieces, fortunately, the manufacturer eliminated all defects under warranty. The body is completely galvanized, thanks to this, it resists the onslaught of redhead disease well, but, nevertheless, over time, from the effects of reagents that are generously sprinkled on our roads, one can find foci of corrosion on the trunk door, door edges and sills. On cars of the first years of production, the headlights become cloudy, and the rear door handles can also jam.

Engines

A large number of power units were available for the Opel Astra H: petrol - 1.4 (90 HP), 1.6 (105 HP), 1.8 (125 HP) and 2.0 (170, 200 HP). ; diesel - 1.3 (90 HP), 1.7 (100 HP), 1.9 (120 and 150 HP). All motors are quite reliable, but after 100,000 km they require little investment. The 1.4 engine proved to be the most problem-free, but, due to insufficient power, this power unit is not in demand among motorists. In the more common engines 1.6 and 1.8, in our operating conditions, the catalyst and the EGR valve are very quickly contaminated. The problem is especially relevant for cars operated in a metropolis. One of the most serious breakdowns that many Astra owners had to face is jammed intake and exhaust camshaft gears. This trouble occurs at a mileage of 60-80 thousand km, and after repairs there are no guarantees that it will not happen again. Signs of a problem are: increased noise when starting the engine (grinding, rumble) and deterioration in dynamics.

Also, the main disadvantages include a small resource of the rear engine mount (it becomes unusable every 60-70 thousand km). Often, the owners are faced with a malfunction of the ignition system module, the cause of the ailment lies in poor contact in the connectors and untimely replacement of spark plugs. Closer to 250,000 km, a membrane rupture occurs, which is responsible for the recirculation of crankcase gases, located in the valve cover. The problem can be determined by the unstable operation of the engine, as well as by blue smoke from the exhaust system. Very often, the services condemn the engine to overhaul, however, the problem is solved by replacing the valve cover. The most powerful power unit, in most cases, does not require repair up to 150,000 km, but minor troubles such as fogging of the cylinder head and oil leaks through the crankshaft oil seal , can occur even after 20,000 km.

All motors are equipped with a timing belt drive, according to the regulations, belt replacement is prescribed every 90,000 km, but there have been cases of a belt breaking after 50,000 km, therefore, it is better not to risk it and change the belt every 60,000 km. The pump usually changes at every second belt change. Diesel engines are reliable, but demanding on the quality of fuel and lubricants. Of the shortcomings of diesel engines, it is necessary to note the weak fuel equipment and the small resource of the particulate filter (replacement every 50-60 thousand km). If the filter is clogged, traction disappears, and fumes come out of the exhaust system, like from an old KAMAZ. Also, due to design errors, the engine control unit suffers (exposed to moisture and dirt). One of the most expensive problems faced by the owners of diesel cars is the failure of a two-mass flywheel (resource 100-150 thousand km). A knock and vibration when changing gears will serve as signals of a problem; it is worth noting that the gears are switched on clearly.

Transmission

Opel Astra H buyers were offered three types of gearboxes to choose from - mechanical, automatic and Easytronic robot. The mechanics are considered the most problem-free, even the clutch kit serves 100-120 thousand km. The only thing for which the manual transmission can be blamed is for the lack of synchronizers, because of this, the reverse gear does not always turn on correctly. Among the shortcomings faced by the owners of cars with mechanics, it is possible to single out a leak in the rear oil seal of the crankshaft and a small resource of the secondary shaft bearing (60-80 thousand km). On some copies, after 70,000 km, cracks appear along the seam of the box. If, when switching from first to third gear, a shock is felt, it is better to contact the service, but, in most cases, to eliminate the disease, it is enough to change the oil.

The automatic transmission is famous for jerking and jerking during gear changes, but they are not afraid of this, since this is not a breakdown, but a feature of the transmission. The most common automatic transmission problem is a coolant leak into the hydraulic circuit of the box, after which a complete failure of the unit occurs. If the auto-neutral fails, most likely, cleaning the jet in the box will help. When going into emergency mode, the box only works in fourth gear. The robotic transmission is very capricious and requires attention every 15,000 km (maintenance and clutch adjustment).

During operation, the driven disk is erased, while the point of contact with the basket is displaced, but the controller responsible for the fuel supply does not know about the shift of the point of contact and supplies the wrong amount of fuel. As a result, this leads to incorrect operation of the box and premature wear of the clutch. It is worth noting that even with timely maintenance of a robotic transmission, its resource in rare cases exceeds 150,000 km. Before buying a car with a robot, be sure to ride it, if there are strong jerks when switching, it is better to refuse to buy such a car.

The reliability of the Opel Astra H chassis

Simplicity is a guarantee of reliability, it is according to this principle that the suspension of this model was developed, a semi-independent torsion beam is installed at the back, and MacPherson strut at the front. If we talk about driving characteristics, then the suspension copes well with the realities of our roads, but it is distinguished by increased noise. If you do not take into account the struts and stabilizer bushings (resource 20-40 thousand km), thrust bearings are considered the weakest point of the chassis, and steering rods, their resource, in most cases, does not exceed 60,000 km. Wheel bearings (the ABS sensor becomes unusable after 50,000 km) and ball bearings at average loads take care of 50-70 thousand km. The rest of the suspension elements serve 100,000 km or more.

The weakest point in the steering mechanism is the steering rack, as a rule, it starts knocking after 100,000 km, there may also be a fluid leak, this, over time, can lead to the destruction of the unit, but if you notice and eliminate the problem in time, complications can be to avoid. There are no complaints about the reliability of the braking system, the only thing the owners complain about is the small resource of the front pads (30,000 km.).

Salon

The salon of the Opel Astra H is made in a strict style, but, at the same time, the manufacturer used sufficiently high-quality materials, but, despite this, almost every car has crickets in the cabin. The car cannot boast of the reliability of the electrical equipment of the passenger compartment. The main problem in electronics is the incorrect operation of the buttons on the steering wheel and steering column control levers, the reason is a faulty steering column SIM module. There are also claims to the climate control system, or rather to the air recirculation damper. The problem manifests itself with a characteristic crackling from under the console.

Outcome:

In terms of reliability Opel AstraH does not differ much from its competitors, but due to the low cost of maintenance and repair, this car is one of the most interesting representatives of the golf class in the secondary market.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you had to face during the operation of the car. Perhaps it is your feedback that will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.

Best regards, editors AvtoAvenu

Hello everyone.

I'm not really into cars, so my review will be written in the simplest language.

Engine 1.6, 104.7 horsepower, box robot, 5 doors.

So, I bought a car for 230 thousand rubles and I drove on this model for 2 years. At first, of course, everything was relatively good, except that when you pressed the fog lamp button, the wipers turned on and the rear right door did not close for the alarm. After going to the electrician, it turned out that the wires were cut.

For about half a year everything was fine. Then the car began to stall ON THE GO. Since the box is a robot, the car stalled exactly at the moment of switching the gear to a low gear, if I continued to move, the car would start itself, if it stopped, I had to start from the key, and, sometimes, it immediately stalled, because the revolutions did not rise higher 1500. In such situations, in order not to stall at the intersection, it was necessary to turn on the neutral one and add gas. The handbrake, in spite of the replacement of all components (for 25 thousand rubles from friends), worked weakly somewhere after six months. What did the electricians say about this problem? Nothing. They could not understand what was the matter, because the diagnostics did not give out errors, and during the inspection at the station, the Opel worked like a clock. It never happened that he stalled on the seovis. I contacted several ordinary service stations and one opelevsky. Nobody could help. spent only about 5 thousand in total for all diagnostics. everything lasted about a year, until one day the car stalled completely. We tried to charge the battery, in no way, the car was dead. I had to buy a new one, took the cheapest one that came up, and it turned out 3,500 rubles. After that, the car never stalled.

Another global problem that I faced is incorrect automatic transmission. That is, I start the car, turn on the gear, and instead of the first, the fourth turns on. Naturally, the car will not go anywhere like that. as it turned out, the problem was in the control unit. But the new one costs about 90 thousand. Having bought a car for 200, I did not want to buy any part for almost 100,000 at all. Therefore, the auto electrician offered to make an adaptation, warning that she would either fix this problem, or my Opel would die completely. Fortunately, everything went well and there were no more problems with the transfers. adaptation cost 2700.

These are the main problems with the car.

Another very important minus is that everything is more expensive than, for example, Toyota or Subaru, and many parts cannot be bought separately, as in other normal cars. Ie, I had to spend a lot more money, and it's hard to change myself. This car is different. For example, to change a light bulb in a headlight, you need to remove the front bumper, which cannot be done without opening the hoods from the car interior.

Despite these disadvantages, if you imagine that I was just unlucky and got an extremely weird car, Opel Astra is not a bad transport. Roomy, beautiful design, high-spirited, acceleration to 100 in 11 seconds, quiet interior, low cost of the car itself and very high efficiency, 5-6 liters on the highway, 7-8 liters in the city, to make it clearer - I refueled by 4 -5 thousand rubles, drove from morning to evening, in 2 years dashed off 60 thousand kilometers.

Summing up the financial results, I bought a car for 230 thousand rubles, invested 100 thousand in 2 years, not less, taking into account the replacement of the entire chassis. Spare parts are German and Chinese. the price difference is not global, the difference is 2-3-4 thousand, depending on the scale. but the Chinese goes out of service after a year. There are also contracts, but not much cheaper.

The most spectacular version of the third generation Astra is, of course, the three-door GTC. But the five-door "Astra H" is also a pretty option! In addition, you do not need to pay extra for it (compared to a three-door). And yet the dynamic shoulder line and streamlined roof, wide base with small overhangs, stylish headlights with lanterns and embossed contours of the arches make this car one of the most attractive players in the golf class. At the same time, the hatchback is a completely "unisex" version, in which both men and women will find attractive features for themselves ... of any orientation ... probably.

It's not just about design. The five-door Opel Astra H is utilitarian, despite all its bright and catchy personality. It is simple and undemanding to operate, and its interior will not get boring and familiar. The fit is comfortable, there are enough adjustments, both for the seat and the steering wheel. The center console is not overloaded with buttons, and the dashboard, made in the same style as the hood, is "halved" by a kind of "keel". Upholstery materials are soft and aesthetically pleasing; the door panels, covered with artificial leather and stylishly stitched with white threads, are especially pleasing. In general, it is pleasant to be in the cabin of the Opel Astra even "in static"!

Comfortable car seats set you up for a trip full of relaxation and tranquility, while soft pedals and an easy-to-use electric power steering wheel relieve the driver of any need to strain and stay in good shape. Only the assembled and sometimes stiff suspension reminds you that you need to be assembled while driving. And the pits need to be bypassed, and not used to diagnose the stiffness of the suspensions ...
However, the composure and integrity of the chassis perfectly affects in fast turns, the absence of rolls and the quick reaction of the chassis to the driving actions by the steering wheel. At high speeds, the "third Astra" is stable and tenaciously clings to the road. Not bad for a mid-range hatchback in one of the budget versions!

The 1.6 Twinport motor deserves popular popularity for confident traction, timely response and good dynamic performance. At the “bottom” of the engine is “not enough”, but after 3000 rpm the engine rehabilitates itself and shows “driver’s ambitions” and good throttle response. The payment for confident dynamics is noise and vibration isolation, which are not enough at high engine speeds.

The five-speed gearbox is good with a fairly short lever travel and precise gear shifting. True, the clutch pedal may seem rather "wadded" and uninformative: it takes time to stop stalling at the start.

And what kind of brakes does this Opel Astra have? - they stop tightly! After them, any braking system will seem "inoperative"! The only drawback is the need for precise and verified small doses of effort so that passengers do not nod their heads bowing to the stylish dashboard ...

Another advantageous difference between the five-door "Astra H" and the GTC version is the trunk, the volume of which ranges from 350 to 1270 liters (depending on the position of the rear seat). The three-door will delight only constant 380 liters.

In general, despite the considerable age of the model, the Opel Astra H is still happy. This is a modern car, tailored for a wide range of potential consumers.

Prices and configuration.

In 2014, prices for the Astra Family hatchback (the “Family” prefix was added in connection with the entry into the market of a new generation of this model with the “J” index) in Russia start from ~ 720 thousand rubles (the initial Essentia configuration with a 1.6-liter 115 -powerful engine and 5MKPP, the package includes: front and side airbags, ABS, fog lights, power windows, power steering, heated mirrors, air conditioning, audio system, central locking, alarm and immobilizer).
The cost of a five-door hatchback Opel Astra Family in the maximum configuration Cosmo with a 1.8-liter 140 horsepower engine and 4 automatic transmission from ~ 815 thousand rubles (for this money, in addition to those already mentioned in Essentia, there is: electric drive for mirrors, climate control and heated front seats , cruise control and BC, "xenon" (optional)).

The advantages and disadvantages of the Opel Astra N 2016-2017 are revealed based on feedback from real owners. More detailed pros and cons of the station wagon, sedan and hatchback Opel Astra H 1.6 and 1.8 with mechanics and automatic transmission can be found in the stories below:

Owner reviews

Driving performance is beyond praise. The salon also pleased. In principle, the car is reliable, the appetite is moderate, but it depends on how you drive: 8-10 liters in the city if it is calm, and 10-13 liters if you drown. The Z18XER motor is the best in this line, it can handle frosts without problems, the owner “doesn’t like” the head.

The unconditional disadvantages include:

1) The view from it is the same as from the tank, that is, none.
2) Opelevskie checkpoints, but here I was lucky - I still have an old F17, she does not know any special problems.
3) There is no room at all in the back (but I don't care, I don’t go in the back, I don’t have a family, I don’t carry anything else).
4) Small trunk.
5) Because of the GTC front bumper with a factory lip, it's scary to drive around yards and especially hard recumbent.

Review of Opel Astra H Hatchback 1.8 (140 HP) with mechanics 2007

Video review

Was taken mainly for the wife, so the machine. For 4.5 years, 90,000 km - no questions asked. In terms of price / quality ratio, nothing else was close. Opel, in principle, are not without 4 pillows, air conditioning, alarm, music. Plus a package with chairs with a bunch of adjustments and other things. It was all worth it, like a naked Fabia with air conditioning and a gun. Real competitors started at +300,000 rubles (Sid and Focus).

Not a plane, but the dynamics are normal. The only malfunction, which knocked on the rack in the third year, was replaced under warranty. Thoughts to change for something else have not yet arisen. Pleases:

- Initially good equipment and inexpensive additional options.
- Low consumption. About 7.2 liters in Moscow, 92nd gasoline.
- Inexpensive materials, spare parts and service.
- Reliability and problem-free.
- Great chairs, very good finishing materials.

Disadvantages:

- The head unit is very so-so.
- The rubber skirt can be easily torn off the bumper.
- The rear sofa does not fold flat to the floor.
- No isofix.

Alexey, a review of the Opel Astra H 1.6 with a automatic transmission in 2011

The quality of the trunk is lame, the chopik of the rear shelf flew out. In general, it’s a sin to complain! The consumption is just strange. With a quiet ride (no higher than 2,500 rpm), the consumption fell from 10.7 to 9.8 liters. in the town. And this is not a bookmaker. I measured this in reality. But with air conditioning, the consumption increases to 13-14 liters. Very frightening and upsetting. On the highway, it fell from 8.5 to 7.3 (no faster than 110 km / h). That's fine for me. If you want to overtake on the track - overtake! The machine is a little dull, but not critical.

In the city, the suspension feels a little harsh, and the steering wheel is not very light. But you don’t notice the hole on the track, and the steering wheel obeys as required. I went to my homeland for 525 km. Got out of the car ... and as if he hadn't gone anywhere! It is easy to drive, there is no tension, I am completely confident in the car.

The owner drives an Opel Astra Family 1.8 (140 hp) AT 2013

Hodovka. After 100,000 km - replacement of brake linings front and rear (2.5 tr. With work). Replacement of the second hub with a hub (6 tr. With work), replacement of steering tips and silent blocks (in the region of 2 tr. With work).

He raped the car off-road, in snow-covered and thawed rural areas, in mud, dust, in rugged roads. Traveled at 60 km / h where SUVs crawl 20 km / h. I fished holes so that the steering wheel was already skewed by 30 degrees. All the rapids are bent for me. The car is all shorkanny from branches and stones. Now is the end of March, and I was washing the car in early October, because it makes no sense, there is dirt ahead!

Engine. The engine, of course, does not tear, it would be necessary to flash it, but that's enough for me. It usually opens after 3 thousand revolutions, at small ones it is very difficult - it rides with the sound of knocking fingers and a diesel rumble. If not for the mass (over 1.5 tons), then 115 hp. would be enough. But! The thicker the material, the more reliable the product - the golden rule of engineering! There were times when I was winding thousands of kilometers on business trips in a week, the arrow on the highway fell for 200 km / h.

Salon. Shumka is better than many classmates. All buttons are in place. There is enough overview. The only discomfort is from sitting, on long trains my neck is numb. At 60,000 km, the stove began to strum and creak, I turned it on once and did not turn it off again, I only regulate the temperature according to the weather.

There is enough space in the back, but not enough for large people. I rarely drive there, I use the rear seats mainly as an additional luggage compartment. The trunk itself is moderately voluminous, if you remove the shelf, then 4 bags of potatoes fit completely.

The owner drives an Opel Astra Family 1.6 (115 hp) MT 2013

Frisky engine (in sport mode, the character of the car noticeably changes towards aggression), durable metal of the body. Successful suspension settings: in turns obedient and clearly responds to the steering wheel, very strong on bumps.

Nice little things, such as a pneumatic bonnet and automatic adjusters of all glasses, which even some cars a couple of classes higher do not boast of. A well-assembled interior with good finishing materials.

There is little room for little things (not critical, now there are a lot of gizmos to solve this problem), a gluttonous engine (a city with a climate and an automatic machine - 13 liters per hundred, a highway - 9), although it should roll in and curb your appetite.

OPEL ASTRA - TUNING

Opel Astra (from Latin "Star") - a small family car, produced by the German company since 1991, is a continuation of the Opel Kadett line.

In England, the Opel Astra is produced as the Vauxhall Astra, the Buick Excelle XT in China and the Chevrolet Astra / Vectra in Latin America. In Australia, production of the Holden Astra was discontinued in 2009 due to exchange rate fluctuations, which made the car uncompetitive. The car was replaced by the Holden Cruze but returned to the market again in 2012 as the Opel Astra.

Astra F (1991-1998)

Opel Astra F debuted in October 1991. The car was offered in several body styles - a three- or five-door hatchback, a sedan and a station wagon known as the Caravan. Also on offer was a convertible designed and built by Bertone in Italy. Although the Astra F was released in Germany in 1998, the Polish Astra in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Turkey, had the Astra Classic name from 1998 to 2002.

The Opel Astra F was redesigned in 1995 with the launch of the new Opel Ecotec engine. Other major changes included slightly redesigned exterior designs and new specs.

The flagship model of the Astra F was the GSi, which had a 2.0-liter I4 16V petrol engine producing 151 hp. and was available as a three-door hatchback. The car also received an extended sports body and sports seats. However, it was replaced in 1995 and renamed SPORT. A very limited number of these models were produced. The body kit was removed and the car received a less powerful, but more modern "Ecotec", X20XEV (136 hp). In Europe since 1994, all Astra models have had the 2.0-liter 16V ECOTEC X20XEV in parallel with the 2.0-liter 8V (C20NE), but the three-door models and station wagons have had the C20XE with 151bhp. Some Astra models also had a 1.6-liter engine with 83 hp.

The Astra F was replaced by the new generation Astra G in 1998, and the C20XE engine was also discontinued.

AstraG (1998-2004)

The second generation Astra G was launched in Europe in 1998. The Astra G was available as a 3 and 5-door hatchback, 4-door sedan, 5-door station wagon, and two special versions were also released since 2000: the Astra Coupe and Astra Cabrio, designed and built by Bertone.

The second generation Astra has received a more aerodynamic shape. The car has become more functional, ergonomic, improved driving performance, and also improved safety, which was provided by four (or six - on request) airbags.

For the coupe and convertible models, the OPC (Opel Performance Center) specification was first proposed, which since 1999 had a turbocharged X20XER engine with a capacity of 160 hp, and from 2002 to 2004 - a Z20LET engine with a capacity of 192 and 200 horsepower.

In 2004, the Russian joint venture GM-AvtoVAZ launched a four-door version of the Astra G under the Chevrolet Viva brand. Sales were poor from the start due to the high price tag. In 2004, production of the second generation Astra G was discontinued.

Astra H (2004-2010)

The Astra H was launched in March 2004 as a five-door hatchback. The five-door station wagon appeared at the end of 2004, and the sporty three-door hatchback GTC (Gran Tourismo Compact) (in Europe) or Sport Hatch (in the UK) was launched in 2005. The GTC has a panoramic windscreen option.

The car was built on the new Delta platform, so its size has increased over the previous generation.

An important part of any major European car is the digital radio that was available on this generation of Astra, along with the electronic Continuous Damping Control (CDC) and AFL (Adaptive Lighting System).

In 2007, the model received some external upgrades, including new front and rear bumpers, lights and other parts.

OPC

In 2005, Opel introduced the OPC version of the Astra GTC, which was powered by an updated version of the 2.0-liter ECOTEC turbo engine (Z20 LEH), producing 240 hp. and 320 Nm of torque. Standard features on the OPC version include a Recaro sports body kit and interior, a six-speed manual transmission, xenon headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Astra J (2009+)

The latest generation Astra J is based on the Delta II platform and debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car was stylistically similar to the new Opel Insignia, and also took many technical details from it.

The Astra has received a torsion bar rear suspension, infotainment and navigation systems from Bosch.

In 2009, the car was presented in a hatchback body, the next year a station wagon appeared, in 2012 Astra J debuted in a sedan body at the 2012 Moscow Motor Show. Also in 2012, the OPC version was introduced, which has a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 280 hp. and 400 Nm of torque. The front-wheel drive OPC has a mechanical self-locking differential capable of accelerating the car up to 250 km / h.
