A defective gearbox shaft seal causes oil to leak from the gearbox. Replacing the gland box VAZ 2108-2109 can be done in two ways: by dismantling the box or on the car itself. Further we will consider the second option in more detail.
How to independently diagnose the box oil seal
The first indicators indicating the need replacement of the gland box, are oil traces on the asphalt after a long period of inactivity of the car. But it is important to understand that there may be several reasons for this defect (as an option, not completely twisted). But, if the matter is still in the oil seal, it is important to detect and eliminate the problem in time, because the oil outside the box can lead to its necessary replacement. In order not to bring to such consequences, it is worth checking the oil periodically and monitoring its level in the gearbox and in the engine. In addition, a defective oil seal can cause a crunch when shifting gears.
Required tools:
- keys for "10", "13";
- awl;
- special slotted screwdriver, shaped like a crochet hook;
- plastic stopper.
To replace the oil seal you need to install the vehicle on a lift or a viewing hole, fixing the car with wheel chocks and placing it on the handbrake.

- Find the box stem under the rubber boot (if the oil seal is faulty, it is easy to find it by the oil stain).

- Unscrew the nut by loosening the joint between the universal joint and the lever.
- Remove the cardan from the lever (1st or 3rd gear will be engaged).
- Disconnect it with the key "10" by moving the lever to the side.

- Remove the rubber boot. The oil seal is located in a recess - the place where the stem enters the box. To extract the desired part, you will have to use an awl or self-tapping screw.
- Before replacing the VAZ 2108-2109 oil seal, it is important to clean the seat by removing oil, sand, and other accumulated dirt.
- Install a new transmission stem oil seal.
- Secure the new gearbox oil seal in the seat.
- Replacing the gland box VAZ 2108 easier to do with a plastic bottle stopper. In this case, the inner part of the plug must be cut out and a new oil seal must be installed through it.
Assembly is carried out upside-down.
Be careful!
Working with the cardan mount (including with the box oil seal) leads to a shift in the wings, so it becomes difficult to switch some speeds. The reason for them is in the fastening and adjusting screw on "13" connecting the cardan and the gearshift lever. Therefore, after the new oil seal is installed, you need to check the position of the lever and adjust it if necessary.
After everything is assembled, and if required, top it up. Then check the work, make sure that there are no smudges.
