Toyota 2AR-FE / FSE / FXE engine reliability, problems and repair

The 2AR-FE engine came out in 2008, as a replacement for the 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE. The cylinder block 2AR is made of aluminum, with thin cast iron liners. The crankshaft, with 8 counterweights, is mounted 10 mm offset towards the exhaust and drives two balance shafts. Lightweight pistons with floating pin.
On a three-layer metal gasket, a two-shaft aluminum cylinder head is installed, with hydraulic compensators. This head is equipped with a variable valve timing system on both Dual-VVTi camshafts. The phases are corrected: 50 ° - inlet, 40 ° - outlet. The camshafts themselves are driven by a single-row timing chain.
The inlet has a variable length ACIS two-stage intake manifold. The outlet uses a stainless steel exhaust manifold.
A 2AR-FSE version was also produced, with different pistons (compression ratio 13) and a different cylinder head: D4-S direct fuel injection, new camshafts, modified brains.
For hybrid Toyota and Lexus, the 2AR-FXE engine was produced, operating on the Atkinson cycle and equipped with other pistons (compression ratio 12.5).
On the basis of the 2AR, a larger 2.7 liter 1AR-FE is also produced.

Toyota 2AR engine problems and malfunctions

These motors are quite good in design and do not have any obvious illnesses and shortcomings. Of the less important: pump leaks, knocks of the VVTi clutch on a cold one (due to the peculiarities of the system), these knocks can be solved by replacing the clutch. Also, the design of the engine does not provide for its repair, respectively, it is a disposable motor. On the other hand, the engine itself is not bad and reliable, with systematic maintenance, using high-quality oil and gasoline, the resource of a 2AR engine can be more than one or two hundred thousand km.

2AR Turbo. Compressor

Forget immediately the idea of \u200b\u200bbuilding an aspirated engine, this is a vegetable motor and making something sensible out of it will cost a considerable amount of money. The easiest way is to buy a 2AR-FE turbo kit based on a Garrett T3 / T04E (or other). These kits are installed on stock pistons and do not require compression reduction. Don't forget to add a 63mm exhaust. With a boost of 0.7 bar, you get over 320 hp. Stock pistons can handle over 350 hp, but for 400+ hp. better to buy forged. The cost of such solutions is considerable, so it is easier to sell a car and buy a more powerful one (Camry V6 with 2GR would be an excellent choice).
