Engine

The story about the engines will be long, since there are a lot of them installed. They are all different, and each of them has its own design features in operation. The base 1.6-liter engine is the same as the Ford Focus, only for the Mondeo it was too weak. He constantly has to be "raped", in connection with which his resource is reduced.

For example, the timing belt rarely nurses the 120 thousand kilometers declared by the manufacturer, it is advisable to change it every 80-90 thousand. On the base motor, the valves for controlling the clutches of the variable valve timing system often flow. By itself, this unit is picky about the amount of oil supplied there. It is a pity that the indicator that shows the low oil level in the engine comes on too late. As a rule, at this time the system is already out of order.

The rare 2.5-liter 5-cylinder turbocharged engine is the same as the Volvo. It was installed on both a Ford Kuga and a charged Ford Focus ST. But here's what's interesting. While it was Swedish, there were no problems with it, but as soon as Ford finalized it and began to install it on its models, everything went wrong. The timing belt often delaminates, oil seals leak, the crankcase ventilation oil separator breaks, etc. etc. In general, 2.5 Turbo is not the best option!

Atmospheric engines with a volume of 2 and 2.3 liters are the most common. Due to the less workload, they have a greater resource compared to the younger brother of 1.6 liters. Both engines have higher oil consumption. And yet, somewhere at 70-80 thousand kilometers, backlash of the damper shaft in the exhaust manifold from the attachment side may begin. To solve the problem, you can order either a repair kit, or change the entire manifold assembly. By the way, if you order spare parts, it is better to order similar ones from Mazda, they are clearly more reliable. And in general, a large number of analogues and non-original spare parts is a definite plus of this model.

Supercharged motors of the EcoBoost series do not differ in reliability, especially those that are installed on machines of the first releases. Suffice it to say that some owners managed to change the motor under warranty up to 2 times during the warranty period. This is due to the piston burnout due to the use of low-quality gasoline. Later, the firmware of the engine control unit was changed, and its resource was slightly increased.

There are also common problems common to all motors. This is a periodic failure of the right engine mount. Right. It happens every 70-80 thousand kilometers. Also, every 50-60 thousand requires flushing of the radiator of the cooling system and air conditioning. If this is neglected, the motor will overheat greatly with all the ensuing consequences.

Transmission

There is no point in talking about manual transmissions on the 4th generation Mondeo. They are reliable and unpretentious. Therefore, they are not of particular interest. Automatic machines are another matter. For example, the 6-speed automatic from Aisin, which has proven itself well on Volvo and Mazda models, is naughty on Ford. The bottom line is that over time, he begins to roughly and illogically shift gears.

But the most interesting thing is the cause of the malfunction, which lies in the EGR valve. It would seem, what is the connection between the exhaust system and the gearbox? The fact is that when the EGR valve fails, the engine's torque indicator drops, respectively, the electronics gives information to the gearbox control unit about the reduction in torque, and, based on the data received, the machine switches. Therefore, they become rude and not logical.

Another problem with these machines is that they hate heat and harsh operating conditions. The boxes overheat instantly. To solve this problem, a cooling radiator is installed. If this is not done, very soon you can get to an expensive repair or replacement of the unit.

The wet clutch PowerShift robotic gearbox is only available on the EcoBoost version. By itself, it is far from ideal, but better than a dry clutch robot, as on the Focus. The resource of these boxes is about 200 thousand kilometers, with careful operation. The main thing is not to forget to change the oil every 60-70 thousand.

Shift problems occur when the clutch and synchronizers of 1st and 2nd gears are heavily worn. But spare parts for this box are not always easy to find, and a special tool is required for repairs. So it is better to contact specialized services.

Suspension

The weak point in the steering is the plastic bushing that adjusts the clearance in the gear-rack pair. As it wears down, a characteristic knock appears in the steering. Ideally, it is better to replace it with a similar aluminum one.

Front suspension Mondeo 4 raises no objections. Shock absorbers and thrust bearings travel 100 thousand kilometers, the same amount of stabilizer struts can serve. The resource of wheel bearings is about 120 thousand kilometers. CV joints (joints of equal angular velocities) go for 150-200 thousand. The first problems with the rear suspension begin no earlier than 150 thousand kilometers, and they are usually associated with the failure of the silent blocks.

A car is, first of all, a mechanism, and like any other mechanism, it tends to fail sooner or later. How often and how serious it will be depends solely on you.

How it was.

Until the moment I bought it, I owned a Passat B5, which had grown quite old and gone to car enthusiasts with great enthusiasm and passion. My choice was between Nissan Teana, BMW 5, Mazda 6 and actually Ford Mondeo of the last (at that time) generation. The evaluation criteria were as before - a rather long, moderately heavy and roomy sedan. Teana - disappeared for reasons of interior design, BMW - frightened off by the price, Mondeo - caught my eye with the design of the body lines, the interior of the cabin and relatively low pricing policy in its segment, incl. and service. On the part of the technical characteristics of the car, I was looking for a car, the key for which would simply be the technical performance of the main components and assemblies (the torment was enough with the front Passat suspension). As a result - I saw the ad, I decided to look. I came, examined and understood - what I need.

The package was called Titanium Black, which had everything except the sunroof and the 2.5T engine, the color is called "Morello", and in different lighting conditions it is more red-purple than burgundy. A couple of days later we got the traffic police, let's go ...

As it is. Salon Ford Mondeo is quite ergonomic, comfortable, beautiful, too, in moderation. In the cabin there are enough different niches and boxes for small things of all kinds, some for cigarettes, and some for chewing gum.

The trim levels of the leather seats varied, some had alcantara with leather, I personally had rag seats, leather trim, all dark. Not easily soiled, pleasant anatomical seats showed themselves on long trips, the lumbar support finally dispelled doubts about convenience and comfort on the road. I traveled long distances (more than 700 kilometers) without stopping and it is extremely pleasing that my back and butt do not get tired.

The front seats have heating (5-stage), which will satisfy even the most fastidious sralk. It's a cool topic for winter, although I rarely use it.

The driver's seat is with electric height lifting, the rest are only forward / backward and lumbar support. There have been no complaints about the inconvenience yet.

Door cards are also plastic, trimmed with leather, with full-fledged handles for closing and opening the door. On the driver's door there is a control unit for all power windows, turning off / on the rear windows and adjusting the mirrors.

Below it will be seen in the photo - this configuration has an aluminum finish, which I personally like more than false plastic "under a tree". To each his own.

The dashboard - with an on-board computer Convers +, a standard tachometer and a speedometer, everything is done in a red and white style, with brightness control and at night I did not have any difficulties. Here I can only highlight the fact that the converse in a muffled car still shines blue and white, and if you retire with a girl - well, somehow it’s not comfortable in general, because the display is hefty, almost the entire interior is illuminated.

Air duct deflectors - at first glance, they reminded Renault Logan deflectors in shape, but this is perhaps all that I can say bad about them. Everything ventilates, everything turns, everything functions, in the central side pillars (where the seat belt is attached) there are deflectors for the rear passengers. Warm air in winter until it reaches there - it will lose a little in temperature, but in general - people sitting in the back feel the difference.

The torpedo is large enough that, in combination with a long and massive hood, gives additional confidence, you feel more confident when driving, as if there is massive armor ahead.

The climatronic and the center console are standard in principle, and here I can only highlight the fact that cars with good equipment are equipped with a 2din touchscreen radio tape recorder, in functionality not inferior to a home TV, with the ability to connect a rear-view camera and a bunch of other goodies.

The glove compartment is very deep and roomy, it fits 2 bottles of 2 liters each (you can use it as a refrigerator), cup holders - 2 pieces, a cigarette lighter too, the central tunnel is painted with piano varnish, which (infection) loves to scratch. We have to do wet cleaning in the car almost weekly to keep everything in its original form.

The size of the salon pleasantly impressed me. It is easy for 4 adult weighty men to fit in winter clothes, without pushing or squeezing with their knees on the seat in front or a torpedo.

Otherwise, everything is within reach even for a tall and massive person. My height is 185 centimeters, under 90 kilograms in weight - I feel comfortable, without any difficulties, everything is convenient, I don’t rest my head, I don’t rest on the steering wheel, it’s not convenient just to climb backwards - it’s far, I cannot even reach with the belt unfastened.

The engine on this model is installed with the AOBA marking, has 2 liters of volume and 145 hp. power is called Durateq. This engine is native to Ford, since the rest of the engines (for example, 2.3 are borrowed from Mazda, 2.5 with a turbine - from Volvo). It's hard to say 2 liters - a lot or a little - everyone decides for himself, but for me personally it is almost enough. The car is quite heavy, with a bunch of options, and there is a noticeable loss of power when driving with 3 passengers and the air conditioner on. No, she does not stop driving at all - she still goes for overtaking, and “spins” well at high speeds, it just becomes more difficult for her to do all this, as a result of which the consumption increases.

Speaking of consumption: when buying, I measured the consumption by refueling (and not according to the readings of the on-board computer, as many do, it was about 11 liters in the city, about 8-9 liters outside the city. As every decent car owner should do when buying a used car - after the purchase, MOT was immediately done, on which:

After that, the flow rate pleasantly surprised, and amounted to 8.4 liters / 100 kilometers in city mode, and 5.9 liters in highway mode, without exaggeration. The measurements were carried out in the winter, with the heating turned on in the middle, without the outside lighting, heated windshield and rear windows, with 2 passengers, at a speed not exceeding 100 km / h, on studded tires.

For me, it still remains a mystery - where do they take the huge consumption (about 15 to 18 liters in the city) on similar engines from other owners.

The engine does not consume oil under any pretext, even if it systematically spins up to 3.5-4 thousand rpm. From replacement to replacement, the car doesn't eat up anything.

The oil is used original, Ford (most likely it is a barrel Castrol 5w-30).

The warm engine runs quietly; I almost started the already started car a couple of times.

Timing Belt - Missing, Hallelujah! The timing chain requires attention to itself at the time of the run near 200 thousand, so for the first 3-5 years of ownership you can forget about it (with timely maintenance, of course). For the rest, everything is standard, antifreeze is pink, the power steering fluid is gray, the belt on the engine is only one, according to the location of the engine (across) it changes without much difficulty.

I service the engine every 8,000 kilometers, it is expensive (even post-warranty maintenance not from a dealer costs about 4,500 thousand rubles), but it is reliable and calm in operation. I have never understood people who do not care about the maintenance of their car and change the oil with filters once every 25-30 thousand kilometers, after which they are surprised - the increased consumption, coking of the bed in the cylinder head, carbon deposits and in pots, the occurrence of rings on the caps, noise, vibrations, smokiness ...

Other engines (for example, 2.3 or 2.5 turbo engine) - the picture may be different, you need to read and try. I did everything at my own peril and risk.

The suspension is not multi-link, which works in the minus of comfort, but in the plus of maintenance and maintainability. There is nothing special to break down, shock absorbers, stabilizer struts and wishbones at the rear (of course, without separately changing silent blocks), at a cost - from the trade wind relatives. After the purchase, I had to raise the car, the list changed:

Partly the original was put, partly - a quality substitute, and it came out about 30 thousand. Expensive or cheap - judge for yourself. Regular trips to Karelia (Petrozavodsk, whoever was, knows what roads) and a control examination after half a year showed the absence of mechanical pathology. Let's see what happens next.

The luggage compartment deserves special attention. My height is 185 (described above), and bending over into the trunk opening - I cannot reach the back of the rear seats, the trunk is really very large, voluminous, with a niche for a spare wheel and essential tools. The main disadvantage of the luggage compartment, I will single out (like almost everyone who drives Mondeo) is a very narrow and small opening. Every now and then - either you get dirty on the bumper, or you won't get something from afar.

I will say competently that in frost up to minus 20 degrees Celsius - any snow and any ice turns into water within 1 minute, after which the wiper blades are simply removed, or with a rubber slime. The battery will eat, no - the glass will not crack, no - there is no ice, the glass remains dry. A damn comfortable weight!

Ford has sewn into the converse an option that, when measuring the outside temperature, automatically turns on the heating of the windshield and rear glass, as well as the mirrors if the overboard is below plus 5.
