Bmw e60 which gasoline engine is better. What will the reviews tell about the BMW E60 in various modifications? What do the transmission reviews say?

The BMW E60 is a fifth-series BMW car that replaced the BMW E39 in 2003. In March 2010, the BMW F10 replaced the E60. The model was produced on sedan and station wagon platforms (E61). The BMW M5 is the top-of-the-line model in this line-up and one of the most upscale sedans on the market.

Alpina B5 (2005-present)

In 2005, Alpina introduced the B5, which was powered by a 4.4 liter supercharged engine with 500 hp. (373 kW) and a torque of 700 Nm. The model was equipped only with a six-speed transmission manufactured by ZF. The maximum speed is 314 km / h, the acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h is 4.7 seconds, as in the E60 M5 model.

M5

BMW M5 is equipped with a V-shaped ten-cylinder engine with a volume of 5 liters. The maximum rotation speed is 8250 rpm, at 7750 rpm the engine produced 507 hp. (378 kW) and 520 Nm at 6100 rpm. The acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h is 4.7 seconds, and the maximum speed is 250 km / h.

BMW 5 Series Security

This is an armored version of the fifth series BMW with a B4 ballistic protection level. This model was equipped with a choice of one of the engines - an eight-cylinder V-shaped, with a capacity of 362 hp / 270 kW (BMW 550i) or a six-cylinder I6 with a capacity of 254 hp / 190 kW (BMW 530i), a frame made of ultra-strong fiber composites (aramid, polyethylene) or specialized reinforced steel, 21 mm glass with polycarbonate coating.

The car was presented at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show.

BMW 5 Series Authority Vehicle

This is the fifth series version of the BMW designed for the police, fire and emergency services. The model was equipped with a firearm holder located on the rear center armrest.

Creature

The E60 program was launched in 1997 and ended in 2003. The final design, developed by David Arcangeli under the direction of Chris Bangle, was approved in 2000 and German design patents were granted on April 16, 2002 of the year.

Comparison with predecessors

The E60, unlike its predecessor, which was in many ways similar to the 7 series, did not resemble more than one BMW model that was produced at that time. The E60 is longer, heavier and taller than the previous model, thus increasing the interior and trunk space. Model E60 brought new notes to the design of the fifth series - the body is smoother, the interior, although not as driver-oriented as in the E39, is as clear as in the E65 of the seventh series with an LCD display, main buttons and iDrive system.

Tuning companies

The E60 has gained widespread acceptance in the automotive community, prompting aftermarket companies specializing in BMW modifications to produce parts for the E60. The companies produced copies of M-Sport parts for the E60. Parts from Hamann, AC Schnitzer, Hartge, Dinan flooded the market when it became clear that demand for them was high. Soon, many manufacturers began to produce analogs of serial parts, since the demand for high-quality inexpensive parts was also high. Moreover, many tuning companies also began to produce parts to increase the power of the initially fast E60.

Platform modifications

A modification of the E60 model is the E63 / E64, which form the next generation of the sixth series coupe. An extended version of the E60 of the fifth series with an increased wheelbase was produced for China as a response to the Audi A6 L. The simple and inexpensive model provided space for rear passengers, almost like in a large executive class model (BMW of the seventh series or Mercedes-Benz S-class ).

Technology

The body of the E60 is made of aluminum - the front of the car, as well as steel - the passenger compartment and rear of the car, thus achieving a 50/50 weight distribution. The 525xi, 528xi, 530xi, 535xi, 525xd and 530xd E60 models were available with BMW's xDrive system.

Equipment

The iDrive system in this model is simpler than in the seventh series. The car can be ordered with a full range of options such as active cruise control, head-up display, active steering, and Harman Kardon's Logic7 stereo. The E60 could also be equipped with electronic stability control systems (ESP and BMW DSCl), voice control, adaptive headlights, a night vision system (BMW Night Vision), active head restraints, xenon headlights, run-flat tires and other vehicle equipment luxury class. The equipment of the E60 was constantly improved, several years after the announcement of the model, such equipment as active cruise control with Stop & Go function, adaptive headlights, LED taillights, a lane departure warning system (Lane Departure Warning), brake indication Effort (Brake Force Display)

Safety

Initially, the safety rating of the fifth series was three stars for adult passengers. However, after changes were made to the steering column, pedals, door ends and locks, airbags and electronic software, the vehicle was retested and rated four stars. Subsequently, BMW decided not to withdraw previously released cars, since, according to the company, the changes made affected the assessment of the car by the European Committee for Independent Crash Tests (EuroNCAP), but not its safety.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the fifth series an overall rating of "good" in the frontal collision category, but side collision safety was rated low. According to the IIHS, a side impact test indicated that a driver could suffer rib fractures and / or internal injury. Tests were conducted on models released after May 2007; these models have been refurbished to improve side impact safety.

Production

The BMW Security 5 Series was produced alongside production models at the Dingolfing plant, and reservations were made before shipment to a dedicated plant in Toluca, Mexico, where the vehicles were assembled.

2007 modification

A restyled model (LCI-Life Cycle Impulse) was released in 2007. In the LCI model, the front and rear parts of the body have undergone restyling. The modification affected the front bumper, fog lights, front and rear lights, as well as the trunk. The interior of the car also changed a little, the changes affected the door handles, the position of the window control buttons, the iDrive system, where shortcut buttons appeared - in the models released at the end of 2008, the shape of the automatic transmission gear lever became more streamlined. In addition to these changes, the fifth series has new engines, transmission and an improved version of the iDrive system from BMW X5.

Other models were equipped with a BMW M57 engine in various modifications.

Transmission

Immediately after the announcement, the E60 model could be purchased with a six-speed manual gearbox or automatic Steptronic. Soon, a sequential gearbox (SMG) became available for those drivers who want a manual transmission but without a clutch pedal. The restyling of the SMG model was replaced by a six-speed Steptronic sports automatic transmission, which was smoother and more accurate. The 535d was equipped exclusively with a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

Production

BMW produced 20,548 M5 V-10s, of which 19,523 M5 Saloon and 1,025 M5 Touring. At the same time, 8,800 BMW M Saloon cars were sold in the USA, 1,647 - in Germany, 1,776 - in Great Britain and Ireland, 1,357 - in Japan, 512 - in Italy. Sales of the BMW M5 Touring were: 302 vehicles were sold in Germany, then 208 - in the UK and Ireland and 184 - in Italy.

Inside the updated BMW E60 sedan, changes have been made to the center console and the iDrive system, which has received eight freely programmable buttons. The car has different front door panels with more convenient closing "handles". The glass and mirror adjustment buttons are integrated into the armrest. New innovations also include a redesigned selector lever and steering wheel paddle shifters. Added touch keys for the head unit. New finishing materials have increased the attractiveness of the interior. The standard equipment includes "foglights", electric mirrors, leather multifunctional steering wheel, on-board computer, dual-zone climate control, electric driver's seat. Options include heated and memory seat settings, leather upholstery, navigation and more.

On the Russian market, a number of modifications of the updated BMW 5-series began with the most inexpensive model 520d with a 163-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine. The next position was occupied by the most popular petrol models with six-cylinder engines: 525i and 530i. The first was equipped with a 3.0-liter unit with a capacity of 218 hp, and the second - with an increased to 272 hp. recoil. Another diesel modification 530d was also equipped with a six-cylinder engine - 3.0 liters and 235 hp. Top places in the list were taken by the 540i (4.0 l, 306 hp) and 550i (4.8 l, 367 hp) models with V-shaped "eights". The latter accelerates from zero to "hundreds" in just 5.2 seconds. The best result was achieved only by the sports "Emka" with a V10 engine (5.0, 507 hp) in combination with a 7-speed SMG gearbox - the M5 sedan accelerated to "hundreds" by half a second faster. All versions of the redesigned BMW 5 Series E60 were equipped with a range of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies as standard. These include braking energy recovery, active choke control and the connection or disconnection of auxiliary mechanisms, depending on the driving conditions. The "Shift Point Display" indicator, located between the speedometer and tachometer, shows the driver the best gear to save energy according to his driving style. The result is one of the best-in-class performance-to-performance ratio.

The fifth generation BMW 5-Series has a fully independent aluminum suspension. Front - with MacPherson struts. The rear multi-link, sophisticated and technically advanced, provides a high degree of stability. Rear air suspension was installed on request. The optional Dynamic Drive active suspension with hydraulic actuators for the active anti-roll bars ensures a smooth ride in comfort mode and prevents body roll in sport mode. All wheel disc brakes (front ventilated), steering - with hydraulic booster. An optional active steering system was offered, which adjusts the steering angle in proportion to the vehicle speed. For some modifications, the xDrive all-wheel drive system was offered - based on an electromagnetic clutch that flexibly distributes traction between the axles. Dimensions of the E60 sedan: length 4841 mm, width 1846 mm, height 1468 mm. Wheelbase 2888 mm. Turning circle 11.4 m. Vehicle weight is 1545-1735 kg. Trunk volume 520 liters.

The safety of the updated BMW E60 models since 2007 is determined by the presence of belt tensioners and six airbags. For active safety, the ABS system is responsible, supplemented by an emergency braking assistance system and brake force distribution. The car was also equipped as standard with Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control. The list of additional options includes a new system of adaptive cruise control "Stop & Go", designed to maintain speed during monotonous driving in long traffic jams up to a complete stop and acceleration. New features also include lane departure warning, head-up display, night vision.

The advantages of the BMW 5-Series E60 sedan are handling, dynamics, comfort. Sporting qualities are not in question, but the chassis requires increased attention. The aluminum front is a plus in terms of no corrosion, but a minus for repairs. After the restyling, the problem with the gas ventilation valve and other "diseases" were eliminated, but there remain increased oil consumption, a capricious "automatic". The car is demanding for qualified service, especially in terms of electrical engineering.

Sales market: Russia.

The new BMW 5-Series sedan in the back of the E60 entered the Russian market almost simultaneously with the start of sales in Europe. Compared to its predecessor, the "five" has become 66 mm longer, added 46 mm in width, and 28 mm in height. The new design, endowed with a resemblance to the "older" BMW 7-Series E65, is intended to create a sense of reliability, solidity and stability. The body consists of a composition of steel and aluminum parts, while all parts of the front end are made of "winged metal", including the side members, fenders, and the hood. Together with the aluminum suspension, this made it possible to achieve an ideal weight distribution (50:50). This generation has become even more "stuffed" with electronics. Power of gasoline and diesel units BMW E60 2003-2007 - from 150 to 367 hp. All-wheel drive modifications have been proposed again. At the beginning of 2004, the "five" of the new generation began to be produced at the BMW assembly plant in Kaliningrad, where the car is produced for the Russian market.

In the interior of the BMW E60, the departure from classic solutions is noticeable. The driver-oriented center console gave way to a more straightforward and laconic design, the middle part of which was occupied by air ducts, and a large display of the multimedia system was placed on the "upper floor". The newest i-Drive interface with a dedicated controller eliminates the need for many physical buttons and makes operation simpler and more intuitive. The standard equipment includes "foglights", electric mirrors, leather multifunctional steering wheel, on-board computer, dual-zone climate control. The configurations of the E60 are not strictly fixed, so the buyer could choose from a wide range of options, which included heating and memory of seat settings, leather interior, navigation system and much more.

The most popular modifications of the BMW E60 in the Russian market are the 525i models with petrol "sixes" with a displacement of 2.5 liters: with an output of 192 or 218 hp. (since 2005) they provide the sedan with good dynamics and optimum fuel consumption. Sufficient interest was aroused by the more powerful modifications of the 530i with 3.0-liter gasoline engines (231 and 258 hp), as well as the younger 523i (2.5 l, 177 hp) and 520i (2.2 l, 170 hp). A special position was occupied by expensive and powerful top models with V-shaped "eights" - 545i (4.4 liters, 333 hp), 540i (4.0 liters, 306 hp) and 550i (4.8 liters , 367 hp), the latter accelerated from zero to "hundred" in just 5.2 seconds. The best result was only in the sports "Emka" with a V10 engine (5.0, 507 hp) in combination with a 7-speed SMG gearbox - the M5 sedan accelerated to "hundreds" by half a second faster. The aggregate lineup of the BMW E60 also includes diesel modifications, but the latter are quite rare in our market - these are mainly the 525d (2.5 l, 177 hp) and 530d (3.0 l, 218 hp) models. All E60 units are considered rugged and reliable (with proper maintenance). Depending on the modification, the sedan was equipped with a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission.

The safety of the BMW E60 2003-2007 is determined by the presence of belt tensioners and six airbags. For active safety, the ABS system is responsible, supplemented by an emergency braking assistance system and brake force distribution. The car was also equipped as standard with Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Traction Control. Additional features included active cruise control, bi-xenon adaptive headlights, tire pressure monitoring system, parking assist. Euro NCAP rating - four stars.

The BMW 5-Series E60 Sedan has become more spacious and more comfortable than its predecessor, but at the same time technically more complex. Its sporting qualities are not in question, but the chassis requires increased attention. The aluminum front is a plus in terms of no corrosion, but a minus for repairs. Before restyling, cars often have leaks from the gearbox pan, engine "sweating" (malfunction of the gas ventilation valve), increased oil consumption, while N-series engines have an electronic level sensor instead of an oil dipstick. The car is demanding for qualified service, especially in terms of electrical engineering.

Read completely

It's no secret that every year the BMW 5 Series in the back of the E60 is becoming more accessible. And if at the time of its debut in 2003 (in 2007 restyling) this car could not be afforded by many fans of the Bavarian brand, today this legendary model for the majority of “boomer growers” \u200b\u200bcan turn from a dream into a reality.

On the secondary market there is a huge number of offers of gasoline and diesel BMW E60s with manual and automatic transmissions with a range of average prices from 400,000 to 700,000 rubles (and above). In this article we will tell you what to look for when buying this model and consider its typical "diseases".

The BMW 5 Series in the E60 body and the E61 station wagon were equipped with six-cylinder gasoline engines with a displacement of 2.2, 2.5, 3.0 liters and a 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine, as well as four- and six-cylinder diesel units with a displacement of 3.0 liters. The power of these engines ranges from 163 to 333 horsepower. The most common is the 2.5-liter 192-horsepower M54B25 gasoline engine.

Body

The first thing you need to pay attention to is the body. Its inspection should be approached most carefully, the presence of a thickness gauge is strictly required. Feel free to check all the clearances between the doors, fenders, trunk lid and hood. As a rule, if the car has not been a participant in serious accidents, then an honest seller himself talks about such "little things" as a worn bumper or an inverted mirror in the parking lot and will show you where to repair it. The front elements of the BMW E60 body (fenders, hood) are made of aluminum and are expensive, and in the secondary market there are a lot of cars with a bat "muzzle". It should be understood that a high-quality E60 body repair requires considerable costs, therefore, in the overwhelming case, broken cars with cosmetic repairs are put up for sale, i.e. without replacing damaged elements and poor-quality painting. There were cases when, six months after the purchase on the trust of an “ideal car”, paint began to fade on the hood and fenders and traces of putty appeared. In turn, they try to get rid of such a car in the same way - to "refresh" and sell. But the bonnet and fenders aren't the only aluminum parts of the BMW E60. In addition to them, the spars are made of the same metal, which you should also take the time to inspect. If there are traces of deformation on them, this indicates a serious accident with inevitable damage to all the same aluminum fenders and hood, and possibly with a violation of the geometry of the body itself. Also, before buying, it will not be superfluous to drive the car to the wheel alignment stand, where you can make sure that there is no violation of the geometry.

Engine

When purchasing this car, you need to be aware that in the vast majority of cases the mileage will be twisted. Therefore, you can ignore the odometer numbers. In part, the real mileage of the car can be judged by such indirect signs as scuffs in the cabin, wear of the pedal pads or the “polishing” of the steering wheel. But all this can be skillfully hidden. Therefore, it is better to trust electronics and "read" the car. As a rule, twisting the mileage, the seller changes the indicators in the engine block, box, and key, forgetting that a duplicate key or light block can tell about the real mileage. Typical problems with engines on the E60 include a breakdown of the KRKG (crankcase gas recirculation valve), the use of low-quality oil or its untimely replacement, leading to the formation of deposits and carbon deposits, which in turn significantly reduces the resource of the units. Almost all gasoline BMW E60s today have no "native" catalysts. If the car is not "reflashed" under "bogus" (flame arresters) and the seller claims that factory catalysts are installed, be prepared to incur the costs of removing or replacing them. The condition of the engine can be judged by the presence or absence of carbon and / or emulsion on the inside of the oil filler cap. Be sure to check the compression on all cylinders. When the engine is running, there should be no extraneous noise, and even more the characteristic knocking of "vanos". Otherwise, there is a great risk of "flying in" to expensive repairs. The rest of the cost of maintaining motors can be equated to consumables.

Transmission

Both mechanical and automatic transmissions on the E60, with a timely oil change, have established themselves as fairly problem-free units. But in terms of reliability on cars with high mileage, "mechanics" is still more preferable.

Suspension

Despite the excellent handling, the suspension of the BMW E60 (especially the front) can be called the weakest point of the car. And if on German autobahns its resource is quite acceptable, then on our roads its strength is clearly not enough. In operating conditions on our roads, three suspension elements were identified that most often fall under replacement: rear arm bushings, ball joints, and a steering rack.

Electronics

The main part of the problems with the BMW E60 of the first years of production fell on its electronics. The reason for this was the "raw" software and low-quality blocks, the total number of which in the car exceeds 150 units. Later versions were spared these problems, but we would advise you to carry out a full diagnostics of the electronics before purchasing.
