Insufficient coolant level

This is now unlikely, because many modern cars have antifreeze level sensors. However, such cases do occur (say, in cars of previous generations). Faulty engine thermostat

Now about more complex breakdowns. If everything is fine with the stove itself, the fan is working, but it does not heat well, then the problem may be in the engine thermostat.

The thermostat serves to regulate the so-called "cooling circles". When we start the engine, the coolant flows in a "small circle", the engine and the interior stove are involved here. Thus, warming up is much faster. After the coolant has warmed up, the thermostat opens a "big circle" and the heated liquid has already gone and the main radiator, which is under the hood. This is done in order not to overheat the motor if there is excessive overheating.

BUT from time to time or from the quality of the coolant, the thermostat may fail and not close the "big circle", but always drive over it. Sometimes even an absurd situation happens when a small circle (even) is slightly blocked and a weakly heated antifreeze goes into the stove (which should warm up the interior). It is blown to the maximum (maximum speed), but the air is cold or barely warm. And since at -20, -30 degrees to wait until the "big circle" warms up for a very long time (and it may not warm up thoroughly at all), the interior will not warm up.

The only solution is to replace the thermostat! Moreover, the faster, the better, nevertheless, the glass in your cabin will not thaw either, which is fraught in winter, because visibility deteriorates.

Defective engine pump

A pump is essentially a mechanical (sometimes electric) engine pump that pumps hot liquid through the system. That is, from the power unit block, through the pipes and further into the radiators for cooling. And in our case, for heating the passenger compartment.

It is a "impeller" that is inserted into a metal cylinder through which fluid passes. The impeller rotates, thereby pushing the antifreeze (TOSOL) through the system. If there was no pump, the cooling of the motor would be extremely ineffective, it would quickly overheat.

Very often, the pump is driven by a belt drive from the crankshaft of the power unit.

The main breakdowns are as follows:

  • Sometimes the belt from the crankshaft tears, the pump does not rotate and does not drive the "coolant" through the system. Accordingly, the stove does not heat. However, the power unit will also overheat.
  • It wedges the pump itself. It does not rotate, or the inner part of the "impeller" does not rotate.
  • Eats up the inside. Due to the "shitty" quality of the metal, the inner impeller can be eaten by aggressive antifreezes or antifreezes. Therefore, purely physically, the pump pulley rotates, but the fluid pumps through the system very poorly. Again, the stove does not heat.

For all the reasons, the pump needs to be changed. I’ll say right away the first "bells" may be - whistling in the engine compartment, a hot hose to the pump or stove, but cold after.

Engine head gasket punctured

The thing is that the motor is not a monolithic structure, it has a block head and a block itself. They are connected through a special gasket. If this gasket is punctured (and this happens, for example, with a poor broach), then the coolant will go into the cylinders or the muffler (it will be from the muffler). Thus, there will be not enough coolant in the system (air locks may appear) and therefore the stove will not heat well! It is urgent to change the head gasket, otherwise you can kill the engine through overheating.

Buy a new serviceable expansion tank cap and thoroughly lubricate the valve with silicone grease before installing. Pull the clamps. It is not possible to check for damage to the hoses. The hole will be where you will not see it in any way. You can replace the pipes with the next change of antifreeze after about five years of operation.

Another way of air intake is the pump oil seal. It is clear that you will not change the pump, only on the suspicion that it leaks slightly. But be sure to change when replacing the timing belt. If this is not done, then the flow of antifreeze will only increase over time, so much so that the grease will be washed out of the bearing. If the pump bearing is a ball bearing, then a nasty squeak, nevertheless, will force you to replace the pump. The roller bearing can jam and destroy the pump housing.

In addition to the entry of air into the cooling system, it is removed. For this, each engine has a special device - a steam pipe. In a Kalina car, a steam pipe connects the radiator and the expansion tank. When the temperature is close to boiling, bubbles of water vapor and air float to the top of the radiator and are carried out by the flow of coolant into the expansion tank.

In summer, when the thermostat is open for a long time, no bubbles will linger in the system for a long time. Everything changes when the outside temperature drops. Much less heat is needed to dissipate to the cooling radiator, and heat transfer is much more efficient. The thermostat opens briefly, and air bubbles travel with the flow until they enter the relatively calm heater radiator. However, it is worth adding speed, and the circulation through the stove reappears.

When the car gets stuck in a traffic jam, the antifreeze in the cooling system warms up the whole. The thermostat opens again permanently. All the air comes out. By insulating the cooling radiator, we make it difficult to cool the antifreeze in the radiator and therefore increase the opening time of the thermostat. That is, the air removal will be better. As a bonus, you will find that the engine cools down more slowly.

When insulating a radiator, do not forget that it must still dissipate heat. When you turn on the fan, the temperature should drop, so do not cover the radiator completely.

Removing the airlock

As you now understand, there is no need to specially remove the airlock. The air must be evacuated by itself when the thermostat is opened. If you definitely want to do this, there are simple ways.

If there is a heating throttle, then it will be the highest point of the cooling system. Therefore, you can do this. Remove one of the heating hoses. Ask an assistant to blow into the tank. Under the influence of increased pressure, the coolant level in the reservoir will drop, and in the rest of the cooling system will rise. As soon as the antifreeze flows out, put the hose on the fitting.

If, after pumping the cooling system, the stove blows with cold air, it makes sense to try to give high engine speed in order to increase the speed of the pump and give more pressure in the pipes, it is possible only then will push the air lock.

On some car models, after replacing the stove radiator, it is required to install special equipment for pumping antifreeze, since it is very difficult to pump and expel all the air on its own.

You can warm up the engine in place before turning on the cooling fan. At the same time, it is not necessary to drive up the hill, but it will be useful.
