Is it so scary when hydraulic lifters knock? Causes of knocking of hydraulic lifters: how hydraulic lifters rumble.

Knock of hydraulic compensators (hydroshtovkhachіv, hydrikіv): how to designate?

Navit with a turbocharged car driver, you can almost knock in the engine. Often dzherelo tsyogo engine knock (cold to hot) - hydraulic compensators(more seem: gidriki, gidroshtovkhachі).

Knock (skregit) under the hood builds step by step. The back of the head is less noisy at a cold start of the engine. If you continue to ignore it, then you will knock and then, if the engine is already running.

If you heard a similar noise - you should tell about the incorrect operation of hydraulic compensators and timing valves.

What is an unsafe knock and what can be the traces?

  • Decline in running characteristics
  • Blue (gray) smoke from the exhaust pipe. On the back when the engine wraps are thrown off, and then it’s fast.
  • Changed the term of service to the timing drive, increased the wear of the cylinder head.
  • In the worst fall: Jammed hydraulic => Broken valve => Falling at the cylinder. Dali - more painful ...

How to get rid of the sound of hydraulic lifters?

Hydraulic compensators are the first to "give to the nobility" about those, like a dvigun, it takes a flooded olive

The main reason for knocking in hydroshutters is lack of grip olives in a plunger pair. In this time, the hydraulic compensator does not reach again, clean up the space between the valve and the cam of the rozpodilny shaft. When wrapping the rest of the beginning, they hit the krishtsi of the hydraulic compensator, which will cause “squeal” to a knock.

Why do you need "yazane"?

hour because of the strong wear of the engine, the filthy operation of the olive pump, the heavy olive channels, and the failure of the hydraulic compensator.

The most common reason is in the olive(Whikoristanya neakіsnoї, podrobnoї chi not suitable for your dvigun olivi). The first thing that needs to be done is to fill in the olive, as it cleans the engine, add additives against the knock of hydraulics and fit your transport (healthy run).

All olives under the hour of operation can build up "vigorati"(according to science - aeration). Surplus of visible soot and other non-receiving seals settle on the details of the engine, including in the middle of the hydraulic compensators, on the plunger pair and the sump valve.

Such actions lead to the fact that hydroshtovkhach ceases to work correctly, you can ask and I will not lift the lid. At this time valve closes tightly, which can lead to a breakdown of the engine.

To prevent the knock of hydraulic compensators, the best option would be to use olive oil, which is necessary for your car in "viscosity," with the presence of mild and anti-aeration additives.

The same is the Canadian olive Petro-Canada. Its uniqueness lies in the patented HT Purity Process olive harvesting technology. Vaughn maє principle vіdmіnnostі vіd traditіynoy method "purification by selective growers" (which vikoristovuetsya more virobnіv olives). The main power is the value of aromatic molecules, which reduce the operational power.

In this order, instead of aromatic content of aromatic z "ednan in olives:

  • Petro-Canada (HT Purity Process) = less than 0.1%.

WHAT DO YOU GIVE?

After reading positive reviews about the oil, I decided to try the RS supreme 5w30 in Kia cerate, while I like it, the knock of the hydraulic lifters on the cold went away, I thought it was already impossible to defeat them)))

PC Supreme 5w-30

I have been filling this oil for the 3rd year already, the Hyundai Accent MC 1.4 gasoline car, I change it 2 times a year before autumn and spring, the average mileage from replacement to replacement is 6-9k km, which I can say I really like the oil, the engine runs quietly, the oil does not eats, gasoline consumption with a quiet ride 6.8-7.5 l / 100km. When draining, it has a characteristic dark color - it does its job of caring for the engine at 100%. Thanks for a good product, I would like to buy it a little cheaper;) PC Supreme Synthetic 5w-30

I have been using it for many years on the FSI W8 engine. Everything is fine, the oil washes well and does not burn like Castrol recommends WAG PC Synthetic 5w-40

I have already filled in PC Supreme semi-synthetics several times (5W-30 for winter and 10W-40 for summer). Car - Chrysler Voyager 1992, 3.3 l, mileage -350,000 km, car - on gas. The oil is excellent. The sound of the engine is a satisfied purr. Stopped knocking "gidriki". Starts up in winter with no problems. I change it after 10,000 runs, of course, the oil already darkens seriously, but in principle it still looks very good (looked at the light). No burning smell, etc.
I also doubted at first if it was original. I read personal studies of car owners on various oil manufacturers (there is such a site. I don’t know if I can mention it here, so I don’t write) and chose a PC. I relied on the decency of the store.
In general, I was satisfied with the oil and the store. Buying is convenient. Arrived quickly. Works good. PC Supreme 10w-40

Today we will talk about the causes of the knock of the hydraulic lifter and how to solve this problem.

The gas distribution mechanism of the power plant of a car is a very important part of it, since it ensures the timely supply of air or a combustible mixture to the cylinders and removes exhaust gases from them.

On modern cars, a mechanism with an overhead camshaft is most often used, which made it possible to reduce the metal consumption of the structure and, as a result, increase reliability.

Since the metal expands when heated, and the valves are constantly in the high temperature zone, to prevent it from being compressed, as a result of which it does not fit tightly into the seat, a thermal gap is provided between the valve stem and the camshaft camshaft.

At the same time, the thermal gap has a certain value in order to ensure the maximum possible opening of the valve, excluding its preload.

Previously, for engines with an overhead camshaft, the thermal gap was regulated by placing shims of a certain thickness between the valve stem and the camshaft cam.

The disadvantage of using these washers was the need to periodically check the gap and adjust it by selecting washers.

Now, to ensure a thermal gap, hydraulic compensators are increasingly being used, popularly - hydraulics, the use of which eliminated the need to adjust the gap, and all because the gap is regulated by oil pressure.

Hydraulic lifters are located, as well as shims, between the valve stem and the camshaft knuckle.

Outwardly, the hydraulic looks like a small piston, so the head has seats for them.

Design and principle of operation

The very same design of the hydraulic compensator is simple. It consists of a cylindrical piston, the bottom of which perceives the force from the camshaft cam.

Inside this piston, a plunger is installed in its seat, through which force is transmitted through the piston from the cam to the valve stem (see photo above).

In its seat, the plunger moves freely, providing a thermal gap.

The hydraulic works like this: when the engine is running, the cam runs onto the bottom of the hydraulic compensator piston and shifts it down. Moving, the piston presses on the valve through the plunger, and it opens.

The clearance is adjusted with oil.

The oil pump delivers oil to the head under pressure. In the hydraulics, it enters the sub-plunger space, and displaces the plunger inside the seat.

The higher the oil pressure, the more it will press on the plunger and the more it will come out of the seat.

When the pressure decreases, the plunger again enters the seat. Thus, the thermal gap between the plunger and the valve stem is independently adjustable and depends on the pressure in the lubrication system.

To prevent oil from flowing out of the hydraulic after the engine stops, ball valves are installed in the oil supply channels in the block head.

Having such an advantage as the absence of the need for adjustment, the hydraulic compensator also has one significant drawback - high sensitivity to engine oil.

Causes of knocking hydraulic lifters

The hydraulic compensator is still not an adjusting washer, which can only decrease in thickness due to constant friction, it may well fail.

Problems with the operation of the hydraulic manifest themselves in the form of a distinctly audible knock during the operation of the power plant. Moreover, the knock can be in some modes of operation of the motor, while in others it disappears.

Also, the knock of hydraulic lifters can occur when the engine is cold and disappear after reaching the optimum temperature, or vice versa.

Most often, the cause of hydraulic knocking is engine oil, although there are quite a few other reasons.

If, when starting the power plant, the knock of hydraulic lifters is heard, but at the same time it quickly subsides, this is not the reason for their failure.

It’s just that after the next stop of the power unit, some of the valves remain squeezed out due to the location of the camshaft, the oil supply channels also remain open and the oil from the hydraulic drains through them.

When starting, the amount of oil in the channels is quickly replenished.

But if the knock on a cold engine continues for a long time or until the engine is completely warmed up, this indicates a malfunction.

The hydraulic compensator knocks when cold.

Knocking when cold may indicate:

  • Mechanical wear of the plunger and its seat. In this case, the oil does not retain its pressure and constantly flows out of the sub-plunger space;
  • Seizure of the plunger in the seat due to contamination;
  • Sticking in the open position of the ball valve due to its contamination;
  • Clogged oil supply channel. When warmed up, the blockage is washed out with fluid oil and the hydraulic compensator works normally;
  • The use of high viscosity oils in cars. When a cold engine is running, viscous oil simply does not have time to enter the hydraulic compensator;
  • Exhausted oil resource, as well as its significant clogging with friction products;
  • Significant clogging of the oil filter, as a result of which its throughput drops, and cold oil is not supplied in full to the cylinder head.

The causes of hydraulic knocking on a cold engine are very similar to the causes of their knocking on a hot one.

Knock of the hydraulic compensator on a hot engine.

The appearance of knocking may be due to mechanical wear, jamming of the plunger or valve.

Regarding the oil, it is worth noting that a knock on hot may be due to highly fluid oil, then the oil pump cannot provide proper pressure.

Another reason for knocking, both cold and hot, may be the wear of the oil pump, followed by a drop in its performance.

The consequences of a knock

Interestingly, the breakdown of hydraulic lifters does not lead to any damage to other mechanisms of the power plant.

For knocking hydraulic lifters, the thermal gap is only violated, which only leads to a decrease in power and throttle response of the power plant and an increase in fuel consumption.

But a knock that appears can signal a malfunction in the lubrication system, so it is important to find out why they knocked and fix the problem.

As for the use of SOHC and DOHC gas distribution systems on cars, the difference is only in the number of installed hydraulic lifters.

So, on modern cars, including domestic ones, for example, the VAZ 2112 and Lada Priora, the DOHC gas distribution system is already used, with 4 valves per cylinder, and therefore with 4 hydraulics, their total number is 16.

The reasons for the knock that appeared for all cars, including those mentioned, are the same.

The presence of such a number of hydraulics only affects the more difficult identification of a knocked hydraulic compensator if only one or a few of the total knocks.

Identification of faulty hydraulic lifters

In principle, it is not difficult to identify a pounding hydraulic compensator. It is enough to remove the valve cover from the car to get partial access to them, which will be enough for checking.

To check the hydraulics, it is enough to use a not thick wooden bar.

Checking is carried out by pressing the bottom of the hydraulic. When creating an effort, he will begin to sink into his seat. It is important when checking that the camshaft cam does not affect the bottom of the hydraulic.

A jammed hydraulic compensator simply will not be sunk into the seat by the created force, human impact will not be enough to overcome the forces of the valve spring.

If there is no oil in it for any of the above reasons, the sinking of the hydraulic in the seat will be carried out with much less effort than normally working.

This method can be used to calculate broken hydraulic lifters.

Eliminate knocking sound

But when a knock appears, it is not necessary to immediately check for the presence of failed hydraulics. Often the cause of knocking is oil, so you can first change the oil along with the filter.

After draining the oil and filling in a new one, the first start will be accompanied by their knocking, since there is no oil in them and all channels are empty.

After a certain time, the knocking should stop. It is only important to select the oil recommended for use by the car manufacturer. Also, before filling in new oil, it is advisable to flush the lubrication system.

If the oil change did not eliminate the knock, then it is already checked which hydraulics are knocking. After identifying faulty hydraulics, they must be removed from the car, which will require dismantling from the camshaft head.

After removing the hydraulics, you can try to wash them in gasoline or kerosene to remove dirt on the plungers, if any.

After washing, they are put in place and it is checked whether they continue to knock. It is important to ensure that each removed hydraulic compensator is put strictly in its place, they cannot be mixed up.

In the case when flushing did not help, severe mechanical wear is possible. Then the hydraulic lifters are replaced, since they are not repaired.

Set for VAZ 2112.

If the hydraulics are new and filled with fresh oil, but they continue to knock, the oil supply channels may be clogged. Then you have to remove the cylinder head and flush it completely.

When flushing the cylinder head did not help, this indicates significant wear on the oil pump, then it will need to be replaced. But this happens very rarely, usually an oil change, as well as flushing or replacing hydraulic lifters, eliminate the problem.

Other malfunctions and ways to eliminate them.

It is better to always look for the cause of the knock of hydraulic lifters that has appeared sequentially, performing one operation after another, starting with the simplest and moving on to more complex ones.

Many motorists are faced with such a problem - hydraulic lifters knock on a hot engine. In our article we will talk about this unpleasant phenomenon. Let's start with the fact that the knock of hydraulic lifters can manifest itself not only on a hot engine, but also when it starts (on a cold one). The appearance of the knock of hydraulic lifters in hot and cold engines may depend on both the same and different reasons. There is an opinion that compensators knocking hot more systemically. While on a cold engine, this shock sound can only appear at some points.

First of all, any motorist must make sure that the shock sound that appears is emitted precisely hydraulic lifters, and not some other node or mechanism of the internal combustion engine. It only needs to be checked on a hot engine. However, this is not difficult to do, since the knock of compensators has a characteristic sound. However, if you doubt the diagnosis, it is better to contact the specialists in the repair shop.

Now consider the causes of knocking in hydraulic lifters. There are several such reasons, however, it is worth noting that not all of them are the problem of compensators.

The first (most common) reason. Compensators knocking because low-quality oil was poured into the engine or it has not been changed for a long time. To avoid the appearance of impact sounds, we advise you to buy only high-quality engine oil from reliable suppliers.

The next reason is clogged channels through which engine oil should flow into hydraulic lifters. And there will definitely be a knock. on a hot engine, but on a cold one it may not be. The thing is that while the engine is cold, the engine oil in it has one viscosity, but as soon as the engine starts to warm up, the oil changes its viscosity and problems begin to appear. To remove this sound, you need to change the engine oil and flush the entire system with high quality. In addition, a more viscous engine oil may need to be used in the future.

The third reason is compensators knocking due to clogged oil filter. Engine oil simply does not fit the hydraulic lifters at the required pressure, resulting in an air lock.

The fourth reason is an increased or decreased level of engine oil. In this case, the oil is enriched with air masses. While the engine is cold, the percentage of air in the oil is not yet high enough to make it compressible. Having worked a little, the engine heats up, the amount of air in the oil increases, making it critical. As a result hydraulic lifters start knocking.

The fifth reason is caused by problems with the oil pump. This happens with worn pumps that do not produce the pressure required for the full functioning of the vehicle's lubrication system.

The sixth reason is the wear of the seat under the hydraulic compensator. As a result of heating the engine, all its parts expand, respectively, the seat of the hydraulic compensator also expands and weakens even more, which causes knocks.

The seventh reason is in the hydraulic compensator itself. The knock appears due to problems with the hydraulics and mechanics of the compensator.

As you can see, there are a lot of reasons for the appearance of such knocks. It is very difficult to understand them, and even more so to accurately determine which of them is the main one. Although, you can not think about it and just change the entire chain, from the oil pump to the compensators themselves. This, of course, will lead to a positive result, but how much will it all cost?

In our opinion, the most correct solution for a novice motorist is to contact a normal specialist who certainly knows by what method to find the cause of the knock and how to optimally neutralize it.

Experienced car owners who carefully monitor the condition of their car constantly listen to various noises that sometimes occur during the operation of the car. Hearing the noise, they immediately try to find the cause and eliminate it. Many have it cold. Let's try to understand this and find out how to eliminate such a knock.

How is the hydraulic compensator

The design is a housing and a movable which consists of a sleeve, a spring, and a valve with a ball. There are several versions of these nodes. Hydraulic lifters knock on cold also, regardless of type.

At the moment when the camshaft cams become their non-working side to the pusher, a gap forms between the plunger and the shaft. So that the lubricant can enter the plunger, it is equipped with a special valve. Thanks to the spring, it can rise, thereby compensating for the gap. Along with this, oil enters the compensator housing. When the camshaft turns and presses on with the ball closes. Oil is squeezed into the gap of the plunger and bushing. This further changes the volume. So the compensator performs its functions.

Hydraulic lifters are knocking: we establish the reasons

So. Motorists with extensive experience claim that nothing will knock on a fully serviceable car. And if extraneous noises appear, then something is wrong. Why can these knots knock?

Among the main reasons, one can single out mechanical wear or wear that forms on the surface of the plunger pair. Also, extraneous sounds may occur due to the unstable operation of the valve responsible for the oil supply.

Possible banal contamination of the compensator. Often, motorists are faced with the fact that the wrong oil or low-quality oil is poured into the car. In addition to all this, it is noted that the hydraulic lifters knock on the cold due to the air that appeared in the lubrication system. So, air bubbles affect the compressibility of the oil. It is also worth checking the oil filter, it may be clogged.

It is possible that the lubrication channels are clogged.

Compensators do not knock all at once. Sounds can appear due to wear or failure of even just one part.

It's all about the oil...

If that makes sense to sin on oil.

And to be more precise, it is on viscosity. If the lubricant in the engine has not been changed for a long time, now is the time to change it. If you decide to diagnose your car, then be sure to consider the most optimal oil temperature. Maybe it's just the temperature.

compensator valve

It happens that this very valve does not hold oil. Then, when the motor is cold, it may leak due to loose connections. This is how air enters the system. When warmed up, it disappears ten minutes after starting.

To diagnose this, you need to start the engine. Let the engine run for at least three minutes. The rpm should be kept at 2500. Then slow down to the idle level, and then add the rpm again. This is enough for the air to completely escape, and the compensator stops knocking. But at each start, the hydraulic lifters knock on the cold again and again.

Inlet

It happens that this hole can become clogged, but it is intended for the supply of lubricant. How does the compensator work further as the engine warms up? The lubricating fluid heats up, then the gap expands. The debris that blocked the holes disappears, and the oil begins to flow in an amount close to normal. However, various viscous particles, when cooled, will clog the hole again, which will lead to poor lubricant access. That is why the hydraulic lifters knock on the cold.

To fix the problem, you can try

The required lubricating fluid must have a lower viscosity. It is recommended to flush the engine before replacement. Also, motorists will be saved by installing a new node.

Oil filter

If it is clogged, then this is one of the reasons why hydraulic lifters knock on a cold one. Extraneous sounds stop as the engine warms up. Then some of the lubricant passes through the filter. However, in most cases, miracles do not happen. The driver will hear a knock even when the engine is warm.

To get rid of this problem, you just need to replace the filter.

You can also replace the lubricant itself if enough time has passed since the last replacement.

More experienced motorists constantly keep a “flight log”, where they write the mileage when changing the oil, as well as the time of the operation. It helps a lot to get it done on time.

Why do hydraulic lifters knock on a cold one: "Priora"

This is a common problem on these models, as well as on many others from AvtoVAZ. Let's try to figure out where the knock comes from and how to deal with the problem.

Here are some typical reasons for the appearance of knocks. So, if it knocks during a snack, and then the noise disappears, then this cannot be considered a problem. If extraneous sounds appear both on a cold and on a sufficiently warm unit at the time of an increase in speed, then most likely it will be necessary to replace the unit. Contamination is possible - here you can get by with a banal cleaning.

Hydraulic compensators and "Accent"

The reasons for knocking here are standard. The owners write that the problem can be solved by changing the oil. More experienced owners believe that if the hydraulic lifters knock on the cold ("Accent" is no exception) - this is nothing more than a feature of the engines.

But in general, most drivers change oil with a viscosity of up to 5W30, and this allows you to completely get rid of the knock of these mechanisms in the engine.

The oil pump should be checked. Maybe it's not putting out enough pressure. Also, many recommend lubricants from the manufacturer "Valvoline".

How to check hydraulic lifters with your own hands

You can check the condition of the spring.

You can also measure the size of the gaps between the valve guide and the valve stem. If the gap is large, it must be eliminated.

Then turn the crankshaft so that the knocking valve begins to open. After that, you can turn the spring. The valve will rotate with it. After that, the knock should completely disappear. If the hydraulic lifters are still knocking on the cold, Priora needs to repeat the above operations. And it is best to replace the damaged node with a new one.

How to find out which of the hydraulic lifters is out of order

Acoustic diagnosis is usually sufficient. If this method does not help, then press the knot with a screwdriver. A normally working structure will compress if sufficient force is applied. If it compresses easily, then it is defective and should be replaced as soon as possible.

In the second method, it is necessary to install in turn the cams of the camshaft mechanism with its protrusions up. Here you need to make sure that there is a certain gap between the cam and the pusher. While pressing the compensator down, try to compare it with known good parts. If there is a gap or the lowering speed is high, then you need to clean or replace the element.

How to eliminate knock

Naturally, the best is a replacement. You can also try to repair. However, there are other ways. So, you can try to flush these knots. It is worth saying that this process requires certain skills and a resource of time.

But this event does not guarantee that the sounds will be eliminated. For many, the knock of hydraulics on the cold was eliminated only after replacing them with new ones. Even new oil didn't help.

Consequences of knocks

If you hear these sounds regularly, don't expect anything. Please contact the service immediately. On some cars, knocking is considered normal. This applies to domestic-made cars during warm-up (further, the noise of parts disappears). But in most cases, this significantly reduces the resource of the gas distribution mechanism drive. You need to drive more carefully.

Knocking after replacement

Usually new parts do not knock.

If you still hear sounds, then this is a manufacturing defect or a problem with the valves. In order to perform an accurate diagnosis and make sure that the valves have nothing to do with it, it is necessary to check their fastenings. There is a possibility that the parts did not give the desired shrinkage. We just twist them and thereby remove the knock of the hydraulic lifter.

Eventually…

From all this it can be seen that knocking on a cold one can be for a variety of reasons. If the compensators are noisy and this does not stop, then you need a replacement. But you can use modern additives, which, according to manufacturers, reduce noise levels. You can also count on an oil change to help. Now you know why hydraulic lifters are knocking - you can easily find and eliminate the cause yourself.

Among all the ways to determine any damage or problem with a vehicle, one of the most accessible is auditory. Many motorists have long noticed that many of the troubles that arise during the operation of a particular mechanism are accompanied by the appearance of extraneous sounds. Sometimes it is enough to listen to the operation of your own car in order to be able to understand - some element, mechanism or assembly is not working correctly. By diagnosing a nuisance by ear, you can quickly eliminate it. The main thing is to know what exactly needs to be done. For example, the hydraulic compensator is knocking on a cold engine - what should I do?

Some motorists make the mistake of immediately rushing to replace one or another hydraulic compensator. Unfortunately, this does not always eliminate the knock, and therefore the problem itself. Therefore, you should initially know the possible root causes of such a phenomenon.

New hydraulic lifters are knocking in the engine - we understand the issue

Indeed, sometimes replacing these elements with completely new products does not give the desired result. Most often in this case, there are two reasons for maintaining an unpleasant state:

  • Poor quality of the oil used;
  • Oil filter problems.

It is important to note that even in a completely new vehicle, a similar situation can occur if the initial quality is very poor.

If extraneous sounds occur during the operation of the power unit on a cold one, and disappear after it is heated, then the cause should be sought precisely in the state of the oil system and as a working fluid. In this case, the main reasons may be:

  • Clogged filter element, which prevents the oil from exerting the desired pressure. When the temperature rises, the filter outlet expands and everything returns to normal - the noise disappears;
  • Valve contamination. Again, an increase in temperature changes the viscosity of the working fluid, making it more liquid, which temporarily eliminates the problem and the system begins to work as it should.

Higher or lower oil levels can also cause this. In the first case, foaming of the liquid occurs, which disrupts the operation of the hydraulic compensators, in the second, the pump simply starts pumping air, which is also not good.

Naturally, the pumping equipment itself can be the main cause of this effect. If it does not function correctly, it will not create the required level of pressure in the system.

We are looking for the causes of knocking

The easiest way to start looking for root causes is to check the oil level in the system. To do this, just use a special probe:

  • If there is more liquid than required by the norm, drain the excess;
  • If less, top up.

The next step is to inspect the pumping equipment and filter system for dirt and damage.

The last step is to check the hydraulic lifters themselves.

First way:

  • Press on each similar product with a special punch made of soft metal;
  • If it does not require significant effort to squeeze it, then there are obvious problems with this product - the working element is squeezed with quite a serious effort.

Second way:

  • Set the camshaft cams with the projections up;
  • Visually inspect them for gaps between them and the pushers;
  • The presence of a gap indicates a malfunction.

In order to finally verify the malfunction, it is necessary to drown each hydraulic compensator in turn with a wooden wedge and compare the speed of their movement. The fastest one (especially if there is a gap) obviously does not function correctly.

Correcting the situation

It becomes very easy to finish what you started after identifying all possible reasons:

  1. If the reason that the hydraulic lifters knock on the cold is the products themselves, then they will have to be trivially replaced.
  2. If there is an incorrect amount of oil, add or, conversely, drain the excess.
  3. The filter element when clogged - changes.
  4. The same should be done if damage to pumping equipment has been detected.

If the motorist could not identify any obvious signs of the occurrence of such noises during the operation of his car, then it is recommended to purchase and use better oil. If this does not bring results, then there is only one way out - sending the vehicle to a good service station, where more experienced specialists can find the “optimal treatment”.
