Kia Rio and X-line engine range

1st generation

The car appeared on European roads in 2000 and was presented as a sedan, station wagon and hatchback. Under the hood of the Rio, there were 2 small-displacement gasoline engines with a volume of 1.3 and 1.5 liters, with a capacity of 75 and 97 horsepower, respectively. In the period from 2003 to 2005, updated models were produced, but the same power units remained in them.

2nd generation

In the fourth quarter of 2005, the second generation entered the market. Thanks to the efforts of the designer Perer Schreier, the car has significantly changed in appearance. Manufacturers could not continue to install low-power engines as this would not fit the car's concept. Therefore, the line of motors has been updated.

Now the buyer could purchase not only a gasoline, but also a diesel car. The working volume of the cylinders has not changed much, but the power of the car has become much higher. This was due to the use of 1.4 L G4EE, 1.6 L G4ED, 1.5 L CRDi D4FA engines. The power of these power units was 97, 112 and 104 hp.

3rd generation

4th generation

What engines are most widespread.

3rd generation engines

Despite the good characteristics of the engines in the 2nd generation, the manufacturer decided to update the line and began to produce the Kio Rio with G4FA and G4FC engines.

These engines differ in displacement and, as a result, in technical characteristics.

But what are the differences between them and why was G4FC used in the fourth generation?

G4FA

The manufacturer of these power plants was the Chinese company Beijing Hyundai Motor Co. They are distinguished by low consumption, have a power of 109 horsepower. As practice has shown, such a motor has a resource of more than 200 thousand kilometers, which is not bad at all in our time. With timely maintenance and the use of high-quality components, you can ride a car twice as much.

The main distinguishing feature of the engine is the use of a timing chain with a tensioner, thanks to which it is not necessary to replace the element throughout its entire use.

Malfunctions that the owners of Rio and X-line encounter during operation:

  • Increased noise or knocking due to poorly adjusted valves. Can be fixed at the service center. Such a pseudo malfunction appeared due to the lack of hydraulic lifters.
  • Leaking valve cover due to poor quality gasket. Can be replaced at a service center or by yourself.
  • Floating revolutions. If this problem occurs, you should clean the throttle valve or change the firmware.
  • Vibrations at medium speed. But they arise due to the characteristics of the engine and do not affect the performance of the unit.
  • Tensioner pulley whistle that disappears after replacement.

Despite such a large number of faults, most of them are quickly eliminated and are of minor importance.

G4FC

I must say that the G4FC and G4FA motors belong to the same Gamma series and do not have many distinctive features.

Unlike the G4FA, the G4FC engine has an increased piston stroke and higher power, which appeared due to the larger displacement of the cylinders.

Disadvantages of engines repeat each other. If we compare the G4FA and G4FC motor, then many will prefer the second motor, as well as the manufacturer. Indeed, at almost the same flow rate, the second unit has more power, which means it is able to develop its initial speed faster and has better dynamic characteristics. The power of the G4FC reaches 123-130 hp.

4th generation engine

It was not a great surprise to anyone that the manufacturer preferred to install the old G4FC engine in the new generation car. The use of direct injection GDI gave the groundwork to manufacturers for a dozen years, since fuel consumption has significantly decreased compared to older engines, and power has increased.

At the same time, one can also note the reduction in emissions and the actual reliability of the power unit. The manufacturer gives a guarantee for engine operation over 180 thousand kilometers, but practice has shown that this figure is far from finite.

The unit during operation does not cause great problems to its owner. You can fill it with not the best 92 gasoline, but still it will give all its strength on the road, providing the best dynamic performance.

In service centers, they note the convenient location of all the main elements that are most often repaired: candles, an air filter, an intake and exhaust manifold, engine cushions.

Due to the short start-up, the power unit has less pumping losses during suction. There is also a lack of a lot of plastic, as in other modern powertrains. The most important thing is to carry out maintenance in a timely manner, do not forget to change the oil after 10 thousand km. Using high quality synthetic oil and prefer 95 gasoline.

When creating the new 2018 Kia Rio X-Line, the company decided to install the same engines on the hatchback that will be on the sedan.
