Penny price: is it worth buying a BMW first series in the aftermarket? BMW 1 series what a baby.

The first series is an attempt by the Bavarian manufacturer to get its share in one of the most popular segments of the automotive market at the moment. It is worth noting that the designers approached this issue quite categorically and tried to transfer all the family traits of the older brothers in the model line on a more compact scale. Every year, the tough rules dictated by the automotive market reduce this categorization more and more, as a result of which even such automotive giants have to reconsider their principles. In the last days of May 2019, a completely new BMW 1 series was announced, radically different from its predecessors. These changes are immediately apparent. The third generation, which received the F40 index, has completely different proportions. The bonnet has become taller and noticeably shorter, the front overhang has increased, and the front wheels have moved closer to the struts. Overall, the model became more like the second series with a lower roof.

Dimensions (edit)

BMW of the first series is a compact golf class car, now available in the format of a five-door hatchback. After a generational change, the car is 4319 mm long, 1799 mm wide, 1434 mm high and 2670 mm between wheelsets. The ground clearance is average, by the standards of this class, and is 153 millimeters. The development of the car lasted 5 years, as a result of which, he moved to the FAAR front-wheel drive platform, which is the fruit of the modernization of the UKL2 base. From now on, under the hood of the first series, the engine will stand transversely. Thanks to this arrangement and the absence of a cardan transmission under the bottom, the cabin has become noticeably more comfortable. The size of the trunk has also grown. With the backs of the rear sofa raised, the car can hold up to 380 liters, and when folded down - 1200. The suspension has a completely independent layout. There will be McPherson struts in front, and a multi-link in the back. It is noteworthy that such a layout will be common for all trim levels, even the weakest versions will not be equipped with a cheaper and simpler torsion beam.

specifications

There are a total of five different powertrains under the hood of the BMW 1 Series. The petrol line will be composed of three-cylinder 1.5-liter engines with 140 horsepower and a two-liter four with 306 horsepower. A six-speed mechanic or a seven-speed robot is docked with 1.5-liter units, and an exclusively eight-speed hydromechanical automatic and a proprietary xDrive all-wheel drive system with the four. The diesel line is somewhat richer. It is also based on 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engines. On heavy fuel, they develop 116 forces. For a more dynamic ride, you can order a two-liter four. It is available in two versions - 150 and 190 hp. Such a motor with mechanics and an automatic machine works, all-wheel drive is offered exclusively for the 190-strong modification.

Equipment

Like most competitors, the BMW 1 Series is equipped with a modern safety complex. In its arsenal there is an advanced parking assistant that helps to maneuver in reverse, blind spot monitoring, an automatic braking system that can detect cyclists and pedestrians, active radar cruise control, as well as a system that monitors traffic lane and is able to keep the car in the lane. Among other things, it is worth noting the fully LED adaptive headlights, panoramic roof, interior ambient lighting, as well as glass projection and a fully virtual instrument panel.

After the “Bavarians” analyzed the demand for BMW E36 / 5 and E46 Compact, it was clear that compact 3-door hatchbacks are of interest to a certain part of the brand's fans. As a result, as a separate series, in 2004 the manufacturer launches the new BMW 1 Series - the most compact and most affordable model range of the Bavarian automaker.

Under the hood are twin-turbo petrol and diesel engines, and in addition to the powerful models, the efficient 116-horsepower EfficientDynamics Edition has been offered with 99 grams of CO2 emissions at an average consumption of 3.8 liters.

The new generation, ahead of many other manufacturers in the compact segment, has made significant headway with intelligent BMW Internet Connected, BMW ConnectedDrive and numerous driver assistance systems.

Third generation

In 2019, in spite of tradition, the company launches mass production of the first BMW 1 Series hatchback with the front F40 in the back, optionally the car is available from. Previously, such a solution was used in the BMW Active Tourer F45, but the front-wheel drive 2 Series minivan does not have any popularity, especially for fans of the "old school" brand, who do not at all take a front-wheel drive car for a "Bavarian".

However, the BMW F40 is a unique and innovative hatchback equipped with a variety of modern features and technologies.

Equipment

Depending on the generation and modification, the equipment of the BMW 1 Series differs significantly due to the absence or presence of any functions, sensors, basic or premium security / driver assistance systems, interior and exterior finishes.

For example, in the second generation, the BMW 1 F20 has pretty good standard equipment:

  • 16 "wheels (optional up to 18");
  • Servotronic;
  • Cruise control with braking function;
  • Speakerphone with USB interface;

The sporty versions of the BMW 1 Series are generally more generously equipped, and are available as standard with functions that are only available at an additional cost for the base versions. In most cases, these include elements that emphasize the sporty character and dynamic capabilities of the car:

  • Radiator grille with frame in high-gloss black or chrome and specially designed longitudinal strips, usually in high-gloss black;
  • Exhaust pipe in black chrome;
  • Door pads with an inscription;
  • Leather sports seats instead of fabric ones;

It is worth noting that in each generation and with each update of the model range, equipment can be added to the standard configuration, previously available only as an option.

Restyling

Restyling (Facelift) - external and internal redesign, technical change and revision, retrofitting with new functions, expanding the model range and adding new engines.

In the first generation, the changes are not immediately noticeable. Major changes inside, namely the addition of new functions and expansion of the lineup with the addition of a new body
In the second generation, the exterior changes are more noticeable, thanks to which the design of the car better emphasizes the sporty character of the car. In addition, the company unveiled the 3-cylinder engine for the first time, expanded the equipment and equipped the hatchback with intelligent communication and entertainment features from BMW ConnectedDrive, which revolutionized how the interface between individual mobility and everyday activities.

Competitors

In the compact class, in the premium price bracket, the BMW 1 Series competes with the Audi A3, Mercedes A-Class, Lexus CT and Volvo V40. Cheaper competitors include VW Golf, Ford Focus, Kia Ceed, Mazda 3 and Renault Mégane.

Each of the brands, including 1 series, has its own pros and cons, technically, constructively, complete set, cost, convenience and comfort.

The Bavarian Motor Plant burst into the C-segment of the automotive market so unexpectedly that the three leaders of the Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3, Mercedes A170 did not even have time to come to their senses when they had a powerful rival in the face of the BMW 1 Series.

First generation BMW 1 Series

The basis for the creation of the BMW 1 Series was the compact 3 series, which was quite successful in many respects, produced from 1993 to 2004, more precisely, a 3-door hatchback on the E36 platform with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with 102 horsepower. Having reduced the dimensions of the "treshka", gave its forms bold lines and, leaving the "filling" practically intact, BMW launched the 1st series in production in 2004. The CS1 concept car, prior to the launch of the BMW 1 Series, was unveiled at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show. The official debut of the release, which is now starting the BMW lineup, took place at the 2004 Paris Auto Show.

Unlike other participants in the race for supremacy in the largest segment of the automotive market, the "one" BMW is rear-wheel drive, which gives it a certain exoticism against the background of front-wheel-drive golf-class cars. Moreover, the non-standard longitudinal placement of the engine under the hood of the BMW 1 release allows achieving excellent traction due to the low center of gravity and the distribution of the curb weight in a 50/50 ratio between the axles, and the verified aerodynamic body shape sets the drag coefficient equal to 0.29.

The One got its revolutionary aggressive design from BMW's lead designer Chris Bangle, a style that disrupted the evolution of BMW's conservative form and drew much criticism. The press widely discussed the "non-photogenicity" of 1 episode, which in no way diminished its recognition. The sporty, swift appearance, supported by an impressive wheelbase, the longest in the C-class, an elongated hood and short overhangs, was a real breakthrough in the design of a modest family car.

Second generation BMW 1 Series

The second generation unit, presented at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, has become even more sporty and economical compared to the first BMW "pen test". Outstanding interior and exclusive functionality, a unique combination of premium quality, aesthetics and innovative technologies allow the 1 series to confidently take a leading position in the C-segment.

Daring, dynamic forms with excellent proportions in the traditional elegant and sporty style of BMW, supported by the signature elaboration of surfaces and exterior details, reflect the status of the "one". Two striking design lines - Sport and Urban - open the way for greater personalization of the BMW 1 Series image, expressed in new nuances of the exterior and interior, as well as an expanded list of equipment.

The "repackaging" of the unit affected not only the design, but also the power units - now both petrol and diesel engines are improved with TwinPower Turbo technology. New generation of 1.6-liter petrol engines: 116i - 100kW / 136hp, 118i - 125kW / 170hp Radically updated 2-liter diesel engines: 116d 85kW / 116hp, 118d - 105kW / 143hp, 120d - 135kW / 184hp. In the future - launching 116d 85kW / 116 hp. with EfficientDynamics fuel-saving function.

Bmw 1 series) - a hatchback is not very large, but it is these cars that are gaining more and more popularity among young motorists. And it is not surprising that many premium car manufacturers place a lot of emphasis on cars in this body type, they are in demand by buyers, which means they will sell well. In the CIS, the popularity of a BMW hatchback is more due not to the convenience and utility of this car, but to the prestige of the brand, and the fact that the "one" in the secondary market has a fairly affordable price, while the emblem of a popular German manufacturer proudly flaunts on the hood.

A bit of history:

The world premiere of the BMW 1 series took place in 2004, popularly, the car immediately began to be called "Kopeyka" or "One". The body type of the BMW of the first series is a rear-wheel drive five-door hatchback with a longitudinal engine arrangement, its factory index is "E87". The unit is built on a platform of different models (and the 3rd series).

In March 2007, the car underwent a restyling, as a result of which the front end was slightly changed, a wider air intake was also added with horizontal decorative strips and integrated rectangular fog lamps. At the rear, the lights have been changed and LED bulbs have been added, and the rear bumper is slightly wider. The changes also affected the interior - the center console was changed. In the same year, the world premiere of a three-door version of the model with new engines took place. The debut of the BMW 1 Series coupe took place in September 2007 at the international auto show in Frankfurt, and in 2008 a compact four-seater convertible was presented. The debut of the second generation of cars took place at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2011.

Advantages and disadvantages of used BMW 1 Series

The quality of the car body cannot but rejoice, even on the very first copies (if they did not have time to visit serious accidents) you will not find any traces of corrosion. There are no complaints about the quality of the paintwork, for the "one" it resists external influences quite well.

Power units

BMW 1 Series can be equipped with both gasoline and diesel power units: gasoline 1.6 (116 and 122 HP), 2.0 (129 and 136 HP), 3.0 (265 HP), diesel 2.0 (from 115 to 207 hp). Owners of cars with the weakest engine often face the problem of starting the engine in the cold season. The fact is that during a cold start, not all cylinders are connected, as a result, difficult starting and unstable engine operation. The timing drive for this motor is chain, unfortunately, the first problems with it begin quite early (after 40,000 km).

The weak point is not the chain itself, but its tensioner, therefore, experienced owners, in order to avoid serious problems, recommend adjusting the chain tensioner every 30-40 thousand kilometers. Two-liter units are considered more reliable, although they also have malfunctions in the systems that are responsible for raising the intake valves. If the system fails, the corresponding indicator on the instrument panel will light up. Also, this disadvantage will negatively affect power and fuel consumption.

A three-liter engine is the most reliable among gasoline power units, unfortunately, there are very few cars with such an engine in the secondary market. If we talk in general about gasoline engines, then after 100,000 km oil consumption begins to increase, and the greater the mileage, the greater the consumption. Diesel engines are very reliable, but when buying cars with such an engine, you need to understand that they are demanding on the quality of oil and diesel fuel, plus diesel engines need to be serviced more often than gasoline ones. And if the previous owner neglected these requirements, then you will have to costly repair the fuel system and turbine.

Transmission

The basic version of the car is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic with the possibility of manual shifting was installed as an option. When choosing a used BMW 1 Series, it is better to opt for an automatic transmission. The fact is that many owners are young people who like to light up, as a result, the clutch dies very quickly, and the resource of the box also significantly decreased. Otherwise, the manual transmission does not present any unpleasant surprises. With an automatic machine, the most common problem is jerking when shifting in lower gears. In most cases, to fix the problem, it is enough to reflash the electronic control unit of the box.

BMW 1 Series suspension reliability

An aluminum suspension of the MacPherson type is installed in the front, and a multi-link at the rear. Often, BMW's suspension is said to require a large investment in repairs. Unfortunately, the BMW 1 Series is one of such cars, and given the quality of our roads, the need for repairs will not keep you waiting long. Most often, you will have to change the stabilizer struts, every 30-40 thousand km, the front shock absorbers rarely live up to 50,000 km. The rest of the suspension elements last a little longer: arm bushings, rear shock absorbers, ball joints will ask for replacement closer to 100,000 km. In steering, the rack is very tenacious, but the tips rarely go more than 50,000 km. The service life of the braking system is highly dependent on the driving style, on average, front pads last 30,000 km, discs 60,000 km, rear pads 40,000 km, discs 80,000 km. Before buying, check if the steering wheel beats when braking, if the steering wheel beats, then the discs have already moved.

Salon.

The quality of the BMW 1 series interior is traditionally for a German manufacturer, at a high level - high-quality materials and assembly. But, not without a fly in the ointment, many car owners often encounter malfunctions of the electrical equipment of the interior, most often failures occur due to acidification of the connection contacts. Also, if the car is more than 5 years old, you need to pay attention to the condition of the power wires, since at this age they begin to rot and they have to be changed. There are frequent cases of failure of the steering wheel adjustment mechanism; to eliminate the problem, you have to change the entire assembly. If the previous owner did not monitor the condition of the door seals, then in rainy weather, water will appear in the cabin.

Outcome:

BMW 1 Series, like all used cars, has many drawbacks, but with the correct selection of a car, proper maintenance and careful operation, they will not make themselves felt for a very long time. In general, this car is quite reliable, but if you have a large family, it is better to look at the more spacious models of this brand.

Advantages:

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you had to face during the operation of the car. Perhaps it is your feedback that will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.
