Having come off the guarantee, one of the conditions (not entirely fair, by the way) is the passage of maintenance from an authorized dealer, some of the owners prefer to perform basic maintenance operations on their own.
Indeed, changing the oil or air filter on most cars is not difficult, so it's not even a matter of saving money, but the desire to work with your own car and confidence in the quality of the work done by yourself. And, indeed, changing the oil filter in a Toyota Camry will not be difficult, let alone add oil.
Choice of oil and oil filter
For the current body (V50), the manufacturer has established for all engines the use of low-viscosity energy-saving oils (ILSAC classifier - GF-4) with a viscosity of 5W-30 or 0W-20.
The second option is more optimal for regions with cold climates. A gross mistake would be to use common 5W-40 oils, even if they correspond to the required API quality category (at least SL), since motors designed for low-viscosity oil begin to actively consume thicker oils (thin oil scraper rings cannot cope with a stronger oil film on the cylinder walls). This is especially true for the 3.5-liter 2GR-FE engine.
Accordingly, when choosing an analogue of the original oil, you need to look first of all at the presence of the ILSAC classifier - for example, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, Castrol Edge Professional A5 meet the requirements. Refueling volumes: for a two-liter engine - 4.3 liters, for a 2.5 - 4.4 liter engine, a 3.5 engine will need 5.7 liters.
On the 1AZ-FE motor (2 liters), a filter with the original designation 90915-10004 is used. Its counterparts are Mahle OC17, MANN W610 / 9, Champion COF100138S.
The 2.5-liter 2AR-FE engine is no longer equipped with a case filter, but a cartridge filter. The cartridge installation kit for non-Japanese vehicles is 04152-31090. Analogues - MANN HU 7019 Z, Bosch F026407098.
The 2GR-FE (3.5 L) motor also uses a cartridge filter with the same number and analogues.
Do-it-yourself Toyota Camry engine oil change
For work, you will need an inspection pit or overpass, a basic locksmith set (to remove the crankcase protection), and for the greatest convenience - a disc oil filter remover. Considering that on Camry engines the oil filter or cartridge case points downward, this will be the most convenient puller to use.
It is best to start working with a car when the engine is not sufficiently warm or cold: there is no need to warm up low-viscosity oil, it will flow out fine anyway, but there will be no risk of getting burned. Also, changing the oil in the Toyota Camry engine will require a supply of rags and a suitable drainage container.
Removing the crankcase protection on all cars is the same - the bolts are loosened around the perimeter, the protection is gently folded down and to the side. At the same time, it should be cleaned of the dirt accumulating on top.
First, the main volume of oil is drained from the pallet - the drain plug is turned out, the jet is "caught" by the container, after which you can unscrew the filler cap - if you unscrew it immediately, the oil jet will be stronger, when it hits the bottom of the container, splashes will rise.
After draining the oil before the end of the dripping, you can put the drain plug in place and start changing the oil filter. The body-type filter changes traditionally - the old one is turned out, its mating plane is wiped, then the seal of the new filter is wetted with oil, and the filter is tightened by hand.
Having unscrewed the cartridge filter, we remove the old cartridge from the case, drain the remaining oil from the case and insert a new one (with the plastic shank down).
Before installing, we wipe the groove under the cartridge in the crankcase, making sure that the fibers of the rags do not get into the central channel (supplying oil to the engine).
Then oil is poured into the engine while simultaneously monitoring the oil level - it should stand on the upper mark or be slightly above it. We start the engine, let it run a little and turn it off - during this time the oil pump will drive air out of the system. We especially note that neither the filter nor the cartridge needs to be pre-filled with oil - it is easier for the pump to drive the system through a dry curtain, and not moistened with oil, while the air in the system will remain in any case.
During the time that the oil dispersed by the pump has time to drain into the sump, you can have time to install the protection in place. Then the oil level is brought up to the upper mark of the dipstick.
