MERCEDES-BENZ is all about motors. M111 Engine Pros and Cons M111 E22 Performance

Mercedes-Benz Cars Group is a super popular manufacturer of premium cars, part of the Daimler AG concern and the so-called big German three (together with Audi and BMW). The Mercedes brand itself is one of the most expensive and recognizable in the world. In addition, such famous cars as the Mercedes-Benz 300SL, better known as the "Gull Wing", the iconic Mercedes-Benz 600SEL (six hundredth), the sporty Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the ageless SUV Mercedes-Benz G-Class, left the gates of the Stuttgart company. Gelandewagen and a number of popular and well-known cars.
Considering all of the above, such a powerful automaker as Mercedes is simply obliged to produce reliable engines, but how things really are, you will find out below in the list of models.
Mercedes engines are a huge line of power units such as in-line 4-cylinder, five and six-cylinder, both in-line and V-shaped configurations. In addition, V8 and V12 engines were produced for the top and most powerful Mercedes-Benz cars. In addition to atmospheric versions, supercharged engines were produced: with a compressor, a turbine and a twin-turbo. For the sports versions of Mercedes-Benz, the AMG division developed powerful versions of the engines,

mostly V8 and V12. In addition, along with this widest range of power units, Mercedes diesel engines of all possible configurations, of any displacement and power have been and continue to be produced.
Now you do not need to search for various reviews, all types, markings, types and models of Mercedes engines are already here: new and old, gasoline and diesel, aspirated and compressor, conventional and AMG.
Having chosen your model, you will get acquainted with the following information: what engines are installed on Mercedes, their technical characteristics, description, problems, malfunctions (stalls, knocking, troit, etc.) and repairs, numbers, resource, etc.
At the same time, there is information on which oil to pour into the Mercedes engine, how much oil is required and how often it needs to be changed. In addition to this, attention is paid to tuning the Mercedes engine, how to increase power without losing a resource for urban operation, and so on.
After reviewing the available information, you can easily determine which Mercedes engine is the most reliable, and who needs to replace the motor, will easily decide which contract engine is worth buying.

New generation of Mercedes engines with innovative technology.

Innovative? How can petrol and diesel engines be called innovative? Many environmentalists, experts and other participants in the car market are probably perplexed. But it really is. Mercedes has unveiled new engines with innovative technologies for the updated S-Class, which will be produced from 2017.

Is it strange? But what about electric motors, about which, probably, everything that is possible has already been said. Indeed, according to the forecasts of experts and according to the plans of a number of leading countries of the world, the days of internal combustion engines are numbered. This is partly true. But there is one but. No mass market for electric vehicles is expected in the coming years.

It will most likely take decades for electric vehicles to oust ICE vehicles from the market. And this is irrespective of the fact that the authorities of Western countries want to get rid of vehicles running on internal combustion engines in the near future. As much as many developed countries would like this, but until the popularity of electric transport eclipses gasoline and diesel cars, we will not see the decline of vehicles running on traditional internal combustion engines.

All new Mercedes engines are coated with a friction-reducing compound

That is why Mercedes continues to develop new gasoline and diesel engines for its future models.

As a result, Mercedes presented five new ICE engines, which will be installed on S-class cars from 2017.

Gasoline engines 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 M 111 / M 271.

Short description.

- 4-cylinder;

- 16-valve;

- multipoint injection / direct;

- compressor or turbocharger.

Mercedes has been quite cautious about the topic of supercharging gasoline engines. The Germans relied on a compressor instead of a turbine to provide a smoother increase in power without the unpleasant "turbo lag" effect. The result was presented in 1995 in the form of the M 111 motor with a mechanical compressor driven by a conventional ridge belt. Seven years later, a more modern version of it was shown - M 271.

The most widespread was the 1.8-liter version of the M 271 with a multipoint injection system with varying degrees of boost: from 122 to 192 hp. Some models used a modification with direct fuel injection. It was produced from 2003 to 2005 and developed a power of 170 hp. It can be recognized by the CGI markings.

The drive to reduce capacity led to the creation in 2008 of the 1.6-liter M 271 with compressor. Its use was limited to the C-class W204 and the not very successful CLC. The engine did not have direct injection.

The latest version of the 1.8-liter M 271 with direct injection received a turbocharger instead of a compressor. This engine developed from 156 to 204 hp.

Compressor wear.

For a long time, no one undertook to restore the compressor, offering only to change it. Fortunately, today mechanics have mastered the technology of its regeneration. The cost of such a service is about $ 100-120, including dismantling and installation. The most common compressor malfunctions are rotor bearing wear and clutch failure.

If an annoying howl is emitted during engine operation, then it is time to intervene. But be careful: worn generator bearings make exactly the same sound. You can buy a used compressor disassembled for about $ 300, a clutch repair costs about $ 500, and a brand new unit will cost $ 1,500. Unfortunately, the compressor service life is short - just over 100,000 km.

Timing chain jump.

Timing chain wear, unfortunately, is asymptomatic. She can jump after 60-80 thousand km. It is a pity that a weak single-row chain is used to drive the timing chain, fortunately its replacement is not too expensive - about $ 250. The malfunction applies only to M 271 motors.

Oil leaking from the camshaft adjuster.

A typical malfunction of the older generation of M 111 engines. Oil begins to drain from the electromagnets, damaging the electrical harness. Effective elimination of a defect is a laborious task and, worst of all, not always feasible.

Application of engines 1.6-1.8 K / T (M 111, M 271).

These motors were used only in Mercedes cars. They were always located longitudinally in front. All motors were assembled at only one plant in Germany.

Mercedes E-class W210: 06.1997-03.2002;

Mercedes E-class W211: 11.2002-12.2008;

Mercedes C-class W202: 10.1995-05.2000;

Mercedes C-class W203: 05.2002-02.2007;

Mercedes C-class W204: from 01.2007;

Mercedes CLK W208: 06.1997-06.2002;

Mercedes CLK W209: 06.2002-05.2009;

Mercedes CLC: 05.2008-06.2011;

Mercedes SLK R170: 09.1996-04.2004.

Conclusion.

If you decide on a Mercedes with a compressor, then be sure to choose a newer version of the M 271 and from the very beginning be ready to invest in replacing the chain. The advantages of the 1.8 K engine are low fuel consumption. It is better to stay away from older versions of the M 111. Alternatively, you can opt for an atmospheric 2.0 16V or a later 2.4 V6.

New diesel engines Mercedes with four and six cylinders

TO codename for the new four and six-cylinder Mercedes diesel engines: OM 656

Naturally, all the new 2017 Mercedes engines have become even more economical and more powerful than their predecessors. True, in order to achieve these technical results, engineers used completely different technologies in the development of power units.

A new generation of Mercedes engines appeared on the Mercedes E-class - the E200 D.

In fact, the new generation of Mercedes engines began to be introduced in the spring of 2016, when the Deutsche Mark introduced a new two-liter diesel engine for the E-Class. This engine consumes 13 percent less fuel than its predecessor. The increase in the efficiency of the diesel engine was achieved due to the lighter weight of the power unit, reconfiguration of the software of the engine control unit, and also due to the reduction of friction in the cylinders, thanks to a new special coating "Nano Slide".

The new six-cylinder engine for the S-Class, designated OM 656, is, in fact, an enlarged version of the four-cylinder engine for the E-Class, which was introduced in early 20016.

The all-new six-cylinder Mercedes diesel engine, which will be installed in the S-Class from 2017, has 313 hp. Recall that a similar engine of the previous generation produced only 258 hp.

The six-cylinder diesel engine Mercedes of 2017 is based on the four-cylinder OM 656 engine, which is installed on the E200 d of the new W213 body

This engine uses a similar monobloc emission control technology found in the four-cylinder powertrains found in the 2.0-liter four-cylinder E-Class diesels.

For example, in a six-cylinder diesel engine, Mercedes engineers installed the CAMTRONIC system, which was previously only used on small power units. This system reduces the opening time of the intake valves at low engine speeds, which can significantly save fuel.

Diesel engine 200-220CDI -OM 611.

Short description.

- 4-cylinder;

- 16-valve;

- Common Rail injection system;

- turbocharger;

- for cars of the middle class and above, vans.

In 1997, the history of Mercedes diesel engines underwent major changes: for the first time, a common rail direct injection engine was used. It was used in the first generation of the Mercedes C-Class station wagon. At the same time, the designation CDI appeared, which is still used today.

The engine received the OM 611 designation. It has 4 cylinders and a working volume of 2.2 liters. The first samples developed 125 hp. and 300 Nm of torque. Compared to its predecessor OM 604, the new unit has received an increase in power by 30%, torque - by 100%, and fuel consumption has dropped by 10%. The injection system operates at a maximum pressure of 1350 bar. Initially, the engines were equipped with a turbocharger with a constant geometry, and since 1999, a supercharger with an adjustable position of the turbine blades has been used. The volume was also slightly reduced from 2151 to 2148 cm3. The gas distribution system is driven by a chain, there are two shafts in the head, there are four valves for each cylinder.

The OM 611 engine family has several different modifications. In passenger cars (C and E-Class), a unit marked 200 CDI (102-115 hp) and 220 CDI (124-143 hp) was used. In addition, there are 82 and 102 hp variations. for vans Vito, Viano and Sprinter, 122 HP - for Vito and Viano, and 129 hp for Sprinter.

In 2002, with the debut of the E-Class of the W211 series, the 4-cylinder engine of the new generation OM 646 and its derivatives - the 2.7-liter OM 647 and the 3.2-liter OM 648 were introduced. Despite the similar design, about 80% of the components new.

270/320 CDI (OM 612 /OM 613).

The next direction in the development of the OM 611 engine family was the increase in the number of cylinders. The 5-cylinder unit received the designation OM 612, and the 6-cylinder unit was designated OM 613. The first one, marked 270 CDI, developed from 156 to 170 hp, and the second - 320 CDI 197 hp. Also worth mentioning is the 3-liter version of the 612 OM with 231 hp for the C 30 CDI AMG.

Operation and typical malfunctions.

Previous generation Mercedes diesels were renowned for their incredible endurance. Due to the more complex design, sometimes problems arose with the OM 611. It's just that a larger number of elements were more likely to break. Fortunately, serious malfunctions did not occur very often. The cylinder-piston group has high strength. A turbine and a dual-mass flywheel can usually withstand several hundred thousand kilometers. It should be borne in mind that the mileage of the car in advertisements for sale coincides with the real one only in exceptional cases. When choosing a car with CDI, it is necessary to be guided by an assessment of the technical condition of a particular instance.

Difficult launch.

As a rule, it is associated with wear of the high pressure pump, less often with a malfunction of the injection system - nozzles.

Intake manifold.

In many versions of the engine, dampers were installed in the intake system, the closure of which led to an increase in turbulence of the air entering the cylinders, which improved the quality of mixing it with the fuel. Malfunctions of this element lead to a noticeable decrease in engine power and a slower increase in speed.

Thermostat.

CDI engines warm up rather slowly. But if even after several tens of kilometers the motor still does not reach the required temperature, then the thermostat will have to be replaced.

Application of ОМ 611.

4-cylinder engines were used in passenger cars of the C and E class, and in minibuses. 5 and 6 cylinders in larger models.

Mercedes-Benz six-cylinder gasoline engines 2017

New Mercedes gasoline engine now runs on a new 48-volt power grid

Undoubtedly, the main attention of experts and those interested in new Mercedes engines should be focused on new gasoline engines. Particularly interesting is the V6 petrol power unit M256, which will now have 408 hp. Torque over 500 Nm. This became possible thanks to the use of technologies that previously the Mercedes company used only on gasoline V8 engines.

Thanks to innovation, the engineers have been able to reduce the fuel consumption of the new six-cylinder M256 engines by 15 percent compared to the previous powertrain in the Mercedes S 400 (333 hp).

Mercedes-Benz V8-Biturbo-Benzinmotor, M176;
Mercedes-Benz V8-biturbo engine, M176;

By the way, a 20 hp electric motor appeared in the new motor between the crankshaft and the gearbox.

Basically, it is an integrated unit that is a generator and starter in one component (ISG). That is, when necessary, the electric motor acts as a starter and helps the engine achieve maximum torque at the very beginning of acceleration, which provides the car with maximum traction at low revs.

Also, this unit can work as a generator, powering a number of important vehicle equipment. The electric motor is powered by the energy generated during braking, which is fed into a special battery.

New diesel S-classes will consume less than 5 liters of fuel per 100 km

Each new Mercedes engine is distinguished by a variety of different technologies that have made the power units more powerful and much more economical than their predecessors. On average, each engine has become 5-10 percent more economical and 5-15 percent more powerful.

The most efficient today is the 258 hp diesel engine, which is currently installed on the Mercedes S350 d. So this model has an average fuel consumption of 5.3 l / 100 km. paths.

The new six-cylinder diesel engine, which will be installed in the S-Class from 2017, will consume less than 5 liters per 100 km.

V8 Biturbo AMG Mercedes gasoline engine with 476 hp

Engine M 176. New twin-turbo V8 petrol engine 4.0-liter capacity of 476 hp

The latest new engine to be introduced by Mercedes is the powerful V8 Bi-turbo AMG powertrain of 4.0 liters with 476 hp. with a maximum torque of 700 Nm. Motor code designation M 176.

The new engine replaces the 4.8 liter V8 engine with 455 hp. Despite the increase in power, the new 4.0-liter V-8 will be 10 percent more fuel efficient than its 4.8 liter predecessor.

This is made possible thanks to the CAMTRONIC technology (valve opening and closing optimization system), which is used in six-cylinder diesel engines. In addition, the new V8 engine uses a cylinder deactivation system to save fuel (disabling the second, third, fifth and eighth cylinders). This mode is only active in Comfort and Eco mode at 3250 engine rpm.

New 2017 Mercedes-Benz S-class engine named M256

Mercedes cars are famous for their powerful and reliable engines. Many car owners have already seen this. But the German manufacturer produces a wide variety of motors. Some are more economical, others more powerful. Among the most optimal is the M111 engine. What is this motor and what characteristics does it have? Consider in our today's article.

Description

The Mercedes 111 engine is an in-line four-cylinder petrol engine. It first appeared in 1992 and replaced the old M102. I must say that the new engine "Mercedes" 111 was developed from scratch, and did not become a modified version of the previous one. So, the motor received a compact cast iron block, another crankshaft and a connecting rod-piston group. The block head has become 16-valve. The engine also features electronic injection and hydraulic lifters. The diameter of the exhaust and intake valves is 31 and 35 millimeters, respectively.

The engine was not only atmospheric - there were also compressor modifications. The Eaton M62 compressor was used as a supercharger.

The drive of the gas distribution mechanism of the Mercedes 111 motor is a chain drive. The chain resource is 250 thousand kilometers. For comparison, the old M102 engine needed a chain replacement every 120,000. Engine management system - "Bosch ME 2.1".

Modernization

8 years after its release, the motor received an upgrade. So, in the unit, the pistons and connecting rods were replaced for an increased compression ratio. The cylinder block has received additional stiffening ribs. The block head has also been improved. It has modified channels and a combustion chamber. Also, individual ignition coils appeared on the internal combustion engine. The nozzles and candles have been replaced. The unit has become more environmentally friendly. An electronic throttle valve appeared. The supercharger on the compressor motors was replaced by the Eaton M45. The control system has also been replaced. Instead of Boshevsky, the Siemens electronic unit was installed.

Specifications

So, the M111 engine is an in-line four with injection injection and a 16-valve head. The cylinder diameter is 89.9 millimeters. The piston stroke is 78.7 millimeters. The compression ratio of the unit is from 8.5 to 10.6. The working volume of the unit is 1998 cubic centimeters. The maximum power, depending on the modification, is from 129 to 192 horsepower. The torque is from 185 to 250 Nm. The engine is designed for 95th gasoline. Complies with the Euro-3 environmental standard. After modernization, the unit began to comply with Euro-4 requirements.

What are the dynamic characteristics of this motor? On average, a Mercedes with this engine accelerated in 10.6 seconds. The maximum speed is 210 kilometers per hour. The best dynamic characteristics were on mechanics. But basically the M111 was equipped with a four-stage automatic. As for fuel consumption, it ranged from 7 to 14 liters, depending on operating conditions (highway and city, respectively). On the machine, the flow rate was always higher.

What cars was it installed on?

Basically, this motor was installed on C-class cars. These are Mercedes in the 202nd and 203rd body. Also, the unit can be found on CLK cars (only compressor ones were installed here). In addition, the Mercedes 111 engine was installed on a business class model. These are the late 124th body and 210th Mercedes. In rare cases, such a motor can be found on the Vito minibus. It was not installed on other cars of this brand.

Disadvantages and problems of the motor

Among the popular problems, reviews note oil leakage. The reason for this is the increased wear of the head gasket. The problem is solved by replacing the sealing element. The next problem is power loss and increased fuel consumption. This phenomenon occurs due to a malfunction. Its resource is about 100 thousand kilometers.

Among the "childhood diseases", the owners note the increased noise of work. This shortcoming cannot be eliminated in any way. Also, the engine requires frequent replacement of spark plugs. Their resource is about 20 thousand kilometers. The water pump serves about 100 thousand. On a mileage over 200, the owner may encounter such a phenomenon as cracks in the exhaust manifold. Otherwise, the engine is very reliable and does not cause problems for the owner.

Service

This unit needs an oil change every 10 thousand kilometers. In case of extreme operation (frequent traffic jams, high loads), the oil needs to be changed every 7 thousand. You need to use high-quality synthetics. The viscosity can be different - from 0W-30 to 15W-40.

The filling volume is 5.5 liters for engines before modernization and 7 for internal combustion engines after modernization in 2000. Antifreeze should be replaced every 5 years, or every 150 thousand kilometers. Coolant group G12 is suitable here.

Tuning

A compressor is very often installed on atmospheric units. Thus, it is possible to increase the capacity without losing the resource. If you run the firmware, you can increase the power to 210 horsepower. Another common tuning option is replacing the exhaust with a sports one. In this way, the power can be increased by another 5 percent.

But experts do not recommend installing the turbine. In this case, you need to modify another half of the motor. And how this will affect the resource, no one can predict.

Summing up

So, now we know what the Mercedes 111 engine is. This engine has a high resource and is not demanding in maintenance. If you are wondering what a good engine you can get, you should definitely consider buying the M111. This unit does not have complex injection systems or variable valve timing technologies. Therefore, the engine "Mercedes" 111 is one of the most reliable in the line.

The M111 engine is one of the most common and successful Mercedes Benz engines. Nowadays, they look quite fresh and reliable, especially if the engine is equipped with a mechanical supercharge.
The engine was produced from 1992 to 2006.
Initially, the engine was installed on w202 and w124 with a PMS injection system, then it was installed on w210, w163, w170, w208. It was modernized and improved many times.
The compressor version of the M111 (111.944 / 973/975) with a mechanical Roots supercharger (American Eaton M62), driven by a drive belt through an electromagnetic clutch, was very popular. When the gear was not engaged, the compressor was connected at a speed of about 1800 rpm, in motion - immediately. On engines M111Evo (111.956 / 982), the M62 supercharger was replaced by an Eaton M45 with permanent drive (without an electromagnetic clutch).

The inline "four" and this engine became the first Mercedes four with 4 valves per cylinder (V16). Also, the M111 engine marked the transition to electronic engine management systems. In 2000, a new SIM4 system (Siemens) was released on the M111Evo.
Fuel system - multi-point fuel injection

M111 Evolution:

As the name implies, this is the next generation of the M111 engine, more than 150 changes were made to the design, was produced from 2000 to 2002. The engine received the designation M111Evo.

In addition to the fact that the compressor shaft rotated constantly on the Evo, only the boost pressure control system underwent complication, which became the source of a large number of failures. The reasons were both in the wiring and in some nodes (for example, a pressure control valve, a throttle valve).

As already mentioned, the SIM4 engine management system (Siemens) was installed on the M111 EVO.

A double crankcase ventilation system is used.

For the first time, three-electrode spark plugs with a resource of 100,000 km were used.

All sprockets are rubber coated to reduce the noise of the chain drive.

The time required for the catalyst to reach operating temperature has been reduced.

Modified, very compact combustion chamber.

The cylinder block has been supplemented with stiffening ribs to reduce noise, and the mounting flange has been enlarged to install a new 6-speed gearbox.

Use of an Eaton M45 compressor for mechanically aspirated engines, which has significantly reduced bearing noise. It was decided to abandon the electromagnetic clutch for switching on the compressor, due to the desire to reduce the weight of the engine and the increased noise of the drive at idle.

The channels in the cylinder head are optimized for aerodynamic characteristics, which improves the filling of the cylinders, the cross-section of the channels is oval.

Application of connecting rods with a predetermined break line. The connecting rod is made as a single forged part and has a predetermined fracture line on the lower head, along which it breaks, only after that the surface is processed for the liners. This activity improves the accuracy of the connection.

Camshaft position sensor for 1 cylinder for optimal ignition at cold start and for determining the status of the camshaft phase shifter.

Quick start function.

The secondary air is passed through a thermofilm air flow meter instead of being fed directly to the blower.

And many other interesting things ...

The next younger version of the inline fours in the M111 family (it also included the M111 E20, M111 E22 and M111 E23), appeared in 1993 and replaced the M102 E18. Unlike its outdated predecessor, the new engine was based on the cylinder block from the M111 E20, but with smaller cylinders, for pistons 85.3 mm (were 89.9 mm). The rest of the engine is similar to its two-liter brother. Cylinder head16-valve with two camshafts (DOHC), there are hydraulic lifters and electronic fuel injection. The diameters of the intake valves, relative to the M111 E20, were reduced to 33 mm (they were 35 mm), the exhaust valves to 29 mm (they were 31 mm). In the driveThe timing chain uses a chain with a resource of about 250 thousand km.
This power unit was produced in two versions: M111.920 and M111.921.
The injection and ignition control system for M111.920 is Bosch PMS, for version M111.920 - Bosch HFM.

The engine was produced until 2000, when it was discontinued and two years later the new M271 E18 ML engine was presented.

Mercedes M111 E18 engine problems and malfunctions

All the faults and shortcomings of the M111.920 / M111.921 engine are completely similar to those present on the older M111 E20 engines, you can familiarize yourself with them.

Engine tuning M111 E18

Compressor

In tuning the M111 E18 engine, there is the only true and really power-increasing way, is to buy a contract Mercedes V6 engine and swap it instead of a 1.8-liter four. This step will save money and get significant power without sacrificing the resource. An extremely dull alternative to such radical steps can be chip tuning with replacement of the exhaust and installation of a low-resistance filter, which will provide about 10 additional horsepower.

Mercedes was considered one of the most prestigious cars in Russia at the end of the last century. Only a very wealthy person could become its owner. Such a luxury could be afforded either by influential members of criminal gangs who got rich illegally, or by high-ranking officials, whose incomes also had dubious origins.

In a word, such a car was considered evidence of considerable wealth. Today Mercedes on the streets of Russian cities has become a phenomenon as common as domestic Muscovites and Zhiguli.

Power units of various types were installed on cars of the popular series. The most successful version of the engine that equips Mercedes is the M111. Let us consider in more detail the atmospheric modification of such an installation.

Atmospheric 111 Mercedes engine. Features, advantages and disadvantages

M111 model of the power unit, placed in the body of Mercedes Benz, began to be produced by German manufacturers in 1992. For the period until 2006, when its production was discontinued, there were significant changes in the design due to the modernization and multiple improvements of the installation.

The motor, equipped with an additional pressurization system that uses the mechanical energy of the compressors, was very popular among motorists around the world. The prefix Kompressor was added to the name of a car equipped with a similar engine. Such M111 models had two varieties:

  1. with permanent drive of the compressor shaft - М45;
  2. with power supply of the shaft, connected by means of a special coupling with electromagnetic properties - M62.

An example of such a motor is the M111 E23 with a volume of 2.3 liters and a power equal to the energy of 193 high-grade horses. It has been in production since early 1995.

The year 2000 was marked by a grandiose modernization, expressed in a change in the design of a huge number of parts. The design bureau has improved the device for more than 150 elements. The updated unit was named M111-EVO.

The very first modifications of the motor brand in question were atmospheric. Manufacturers made two varieties of them, differing in volume and power. The performance of each of them is the subject of forthcoming research.

Characteristics М111Е20

The start of production is considered to be 1992. This engine was equipped with 124 Mercedes. The power unit has four working cylinders in the design, located in one line.

It will be interesting to know that the M111 engine of this modification was one of the firstuse a four-valve gas distribution system.

As for the technical indicators of the atmospheric-type Mercedes M111 power unit in question, they are as follows:

  1. the working space of each of the four cylinders, the diameter of which is 89.9 mm, holds 1993 cm3 of the fuel-air mixture;
  2. the piston performs useful work when moving forward at a distance of 78.7 mm;
  3. for an engine of a similar modification M111, the characteristic value of the compression ratio is considered to be an indicator of 9.6;
  4. when the crankshaft reaches 5500 rpm, the power unit develops 136 horsepower;
  5. to accelerate to 100 km / h, a car with such a motor takes only 11 seconds;
  6. the above power allows a Mercedes with an M111 engine to develop a speed of 200 km / h. At least, such indicators are characterized by Mercedes W124;
  7. measured unhurried driving along crowded city streets requires 11 liters of AI-95 gasoline, when driving on an open highway, the engine absorbs 7 liters of fuel.

Comparative safety for the environment of the M111 power unit of the 90's ensures compliance with the Euro-4 regulatory requirements. Of course, this is possible using the recommended grade of fuel.

Performance M111 E22

A motor design similar to the previous version must have identical performance. However, they differ due to the difference in volume. When considering the 111 E22 motor of the Mercedes W124 car, the following technical characteristics are observed, indicated by the manufacturer in the accompanying documentation:

  1. the capacity of the functional space is 2.2 l;
  2. inside a cylinder with a cross-section of 89.9 mm, the piston makes a stroke of 86.6 mm;
  3. due to the increase in volume, the power of the power plant also grows, reaching an indicator of 150 hp, with a crankshaft speed similar to the previous version of the engine;
  4. the greater value is the compression ratio, expressed by the number 10;
  5. with such an internal combustion engine, the car is capable of accelerating to 100 km / h in an negligible short time, or rather in 10.5 seconds;
  6. the manufacturer has set a maximum speed of 210 km / h, which is a very attractive quality for domestic reckless drivers;
  7. despite the increased costs for refueling an internal combustion engine due to the use of an expensive AI-95, the power unit pleases consumers with its efficiency due to its low fuel consumption. The motor consumes 10 liters of gasoline when moving around the city and 7 liters on a free highway.

Of course, the proposed description refers to normally functioning engines. By the deviations of the listed parameters, it can be determined that there are some malfunctions in the unit.

Advantages and disadvantages of aspirated M111

Despite the fact that such units have long been out of production, they are still found on the roads today, and in a fairly large number. The motors of the first considered category M111 E20 won particular popularity. The engines have won such loyalty from drivers thanks to undeniable merits, namely:

  • extreme reliability, confirmed by many years of trouble-free operation;
  • increased service life of the gas distribution mechanism due to the chain-type drive. However, it is preferable to use an updated version of the timing belt, which has undergone significant revision and modernization, acquiring priority characteristics in comparison with the original system;
  • an acceptable indicator of fuel consumption does not negatively affect the dynamic capabilities of the power unit;
  • availability and comparative low cost of service. A prerequisite for this is the timely replacement of the lubricant and the use of engine oil in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations set out in the attached technical documentation.

Unfortunately, there were some drawbacks. The likely reason can be considered the flaws of the design bureau, which produces the M111 motors. The main drawbacks are:

  • possible oil leakage caused by a worn cylinder head gasket, which is not surprising with more than 20 years of service. The indicated malfunction is easily eliminated due to the elementary replacement of the unusable part;
  • due to faults in the air flow meter, the amount of fuel consumed increases, accompanied by an annoying drop in power. The problem is considered solved after replacing the faulty device;
  • some drivers are discouraged by some noise during operation. However, the sound accompaniment of atmospheric engines M111 is significantly inferior to the loud VAZ.
