Reliability, problems and repair of engines 2.0 TSI (2 gen.)

The second generation 2.0 TSI appeared in 2008 and replaced the 1st generation EA888 (CAW and CCT). It was created on the basis of the second generation 1.8 TSI (CDA and CDH). Here, about the same changes took place as in the younger brother: a crankshaft with 52 mm necks instead of 58 mm was used, a hone was made differently to reduce friction, new pistons and rings of a special design were used, an adjustable oil pump was installed, 2 lambda probes, the motor was pulled up to the Euro-5 environmental class.
But there is also something that is missing on the 1.8 TSI gen 2. Here they installed the AVS system (Audi valvelift system) on the exhaust camshaft, which can switch the valve lift between two modes: 6.35 mm or 10 mm. The mode change occurs after 3100 rpm.
A variable valve timing system is installed on the intake shaft, as in the 1st generation EA888.

All this provides a power of 211 hp. at 4300-6000 rpm, the torque increased to 350 Nm at 1500-4200 rpm. The CDNC and CAEB engines could boast of such indicators.
CDNC motors were Euro-5 compliant, and CAEB engines were produced under ULEV 2 standard.
They produced software-altered CAEA motors for North America and CDNB for Europe, which had 180 hp. at 4000-6000 rpm and a torque of 320 Nm at 1500-3900 rpm.

In Europe, motors of the CCZ series were sold, which differ from CDN in that they do not have an AVS system. These engines are: CCZA, CCZB, CCZC and CCZD. They all have the same hardware, but different firmware. Their power is 211, 200, 170 and 180 hp. respectively. The torque of all motors is 280 Nm at 1700-5000 rpm.

The release of these motors continued until 2015, when they were completely replaced by the 3rd generation 2.0 TSI.

Disadvantages and problems of 2.0 TSI engines (2nd generation)

Your engine is a complete analogue of 1.8 TSI CDAB, CDAA and other engines of this series. They all suffer from the same diseases: high oil consumption for various reasons, timing chain replacement after 100 thousand km, unstable speed, etc. We wrote about all this in this material.
With regard to oil consumption, for the 2.0 TSI, the pistons are replaced by Kolbenschmidt 40247600 with 21 fingers. If there is a working out on the cylinders and it is necessary to sharpen for pistons of oversized size, then they buy the pistons of the first repair Kolbenschmidt 40247610 or 40247620 for the second repair.

Engine tuning 2.0 TSI CDNC

Chip tuning

Adding power to this motor is easier than you might imagine. It is enough to go to the tuners and fill in the Stage 1 firmware, this will immediately give up to 280 hp, torque up to 440-450 Nm, and even 300 hp on sports fuel. This is a good result, but it is better to do it smartly and immediately put a downpipe, a cold intake, a larger intercooler and firmware for Stage 2. This will give 300 hp. on 98 gasoline and under 460 Nm of torque, and on sports fuel, up to 320 horses and about 550 Nm of torque can be removed.
These are excellent figures, but if you want more, then you need to buy a turbo kit based on K04-064 with good exhaust on a 76 mm pipe, new NGK plugs, a large intercooler and a cold intake - a typical option for a 2.0TSI. There are countless numbers of such cars built and almost any tuner will be able to repeat it. This will give you up to 350 hp. on 98 gasoline and under 500 Nm of torque. On sports fuel, such motors can produce up to 370-380 hp. and 550 Nm of torque.

So, the EA113 four-row injection engine is presented in volumes: 1.4 TSI 122 and 150 hp; 2.0 TSI 180 and 211 hp The two-liter models are presented in all-wheel drive, 1.4 - front. They all have a turbine.

The manufacturer recommends 95/98 fuel, the engines comply with the Euro 5 standard, the consumption in the city promises to be 12.6, on the highway 8.8 liters per hundred square meters. In practice, without capital, the engine leaves in the region of 300 thousand. This engine model is installed on some models of Audi, Seat, Skoda, as well as Volkswagen Jetta, Polo, Golf, Passat and Tiguan. The Tiguan and Audi Q3 are on the same platform, and because the Q3 is a Premium car, they are not considered competitors.

The predecessor of Tigun can be safely called the Golf II station wagon, but since sales did not meet the manufacturer's expectations, production was curtailed. Volkswagen studio chief designer Klaus Bischoff constantly imagined the image of the Touareg SUV, which is why both cars are very similar, despite the difference in size.

Malfunctions and repairs.

If the timing belt breaks (but this is not earlier than 90 thousand km), which the Tiguan is equipped with, be prepared for the valves to bend.

Increased oil consumption (typical for vehicles with mileage over 150 thousand). In this case, the valves or oil scraper rings must be replaced.

A worn chain tensioner will give you diesel engine sound and engine knocking sound.

The service life of the injection pump pusher is about 40 thousand, if wear occurs, then the car will not go at high speeds. Check its condition every 15-20 thousand km.

If you own an American car, it has a problem with no ignition after refueling. Fuel tank vent valve problem.

Remember to clean the manifold periodically.

The eternal misfortune of all Volkswagen OVs - the high price of both the cars themselves and their maintenance (and at the same time the original spare parts) - did not bypass Tiguan.

In general, the engine is quite good and cheerful, justifies its horses, but very picky about the quality of oil and fuel.

Engine tuning.

In this case, everything is quite simple - there would be money, as they say. One of the simplest versions is a flashing, which will add up to 260 hp. If this is not enough for you, then you can replace the turbine and injectors using the options proposed for the Audi S3, this will give about 350 hp. at the exit. There is no point in torturing the two-liter engine further.

Among the cars presented in the secondary market of our country, there are South Korean, French and Japanese models.

So, on the third line is the South Korean Kia Sorento. The car is great for those looking for a simple and reliable vehicle. A car can be purchased for 400 - 450 thousand rubles, but in the first generation.

The second place went to the French Renault Duster, which is considered an affordable model. The design was recognized as successful, the car is offered both with a front-wheel drive system and an all-wheel drive system.

The Japanese Toyota RAV-4 took the leading position in the rating. The price of a used car reaches 500 thousand rubles. For this amount of money, it is possible to buy a second-generation crossover with engines, the performance of which is 150 and 160 horsepower, respectively.

The Czech manufacturer presented an updated Skoda Scala model, which can now also run on methane, as part of the World Motor Show in Frankfurt.

According to official data, the car can become the main competitor to the bi-fuel car Lada Vesta CNG. It should be noted that cars capable of running on this type of fuel are considered to be in great demand in Europe. But, despite this, now manufacturers are actively working in the field of creating electric cars.

That is why Skoda Scala G-TEC stood out favorably at the motor show among other models, attracting the attention of the audience. Recall that the car concept was presented last fall. But, despite this, the producers did not announce the exact date of the presentation, surprising the audience this year.

Under the hood of the car is a 1.0-liter power unit with a capacity of 90 horsepower. An automatic transmission works in tandem with him.

The exact date of production of the car has not yet been announced. According to manufacturers, it will be possible to decide on it only next year.

For such a decent amount, the client will be offered a new crossover with a 296 hp turbo unit. The role of the transmission is assigned to a seven-speed automatic transmission (DSG). The machine is also equipped with 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

In dynamics, the novelty has quite good indicators. The Volkswagen T-Roc R accelerates to one hundred kilometers per hour in 4.9 seconds. The maximum speed is limited to 250 km / h.

The novelty is offered in a wide range of body shades: orange, yellow, white with silver, gray, black, snow-white and two bright red shades. The special Lapiz Blue is also available.

Already in the basic version, the new crossover is equipped with 19-inch Pretoria wheels. But the adaptive shock absorber system Dynamic Chassis Control is offered only in an additional package, which costs 864 dollars (in rubles - about 55 260).

Handsome? Sure! But is it really worth the money? Write in the comments.

Service

Maintenance of Volkswagen Tiguan power units is carried out in the same way, like all VAG engines. The service interval is 15,000 km. You can service the engines both in a car service and with your own hands.

Output

VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN has a fairly wide range of power units that will please any motorist. Maintenance of motors is quite simple. But the repair will have to be carried out in a car service.

Volkswagen Tiguan engine in the Russian version of the crossover is an in-line 4-cylinder engine with a 16-valve timing mechanism (DOHC). The engine range of Volkswagen Tiguan power units today is a set of petrol turbo engines with a working volume of 1.4 and 2 liters of various capacities, plus there is a 2-liter diesel engine.

Tiguan engines of 1.4 TSI 122 and 150 horsepower are also installed on the Jetta sedan. We offer their detailed technical description. We will talk about more powerful power units with a working volume of 2 liters. This is a Tiguan 2.0 TSI engine with 170 hp. and 200 hp. Actually, the engines are structurally similar, the difference is in the turbine performance. For a power unit of 170 hp they put a BorgWarner K03 turbine, on a 200 hp engine. put the turbine KKK K04. Basically, the device of a 2 liter Volkswagen Tiguan engine of different power is identical.

so 2.0 TSI, it is an in-line 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine with a cast iron cylinder block and an aluminum cylinder head. AT the timing belt is... In the event of a belt break, the valve bends without fail. Hydraulic compensators provide a normal thermal clearance in the valve train. There are phase shifters on the intake shaft, direct fuel injection, directly into the combustion chamber. This engine has a mass of modifications with a capacity of 170 to 265 horsepower and is installed on various models of Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda. It is worth noting that these Tiguan turbo engines are very sensitive to fuel quality, oil level and the presence of coolant. For successful operation, all this must be carefully monitored, otherwise you will have to invest in very serious and most importantly expensive repairs.

Perhaps the most economical is diesel Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI with a Common Rail injection system, which also has a high torque of 320 Nm.

Cylinder head volkswagen Tiguan 2.0L TDI diesel engine with common rail injection system is made of aluminum and has a cross-flow design with two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder. The valves are vertical and directed downward. Two camshafts are located at the top and are connected by a gear train with a spur gear, which has a built-in gap compensator between the gear teeth. The timing belt is driven from the crankshaft using a toothed belt and a toothed pulley on the exhaust camshaft. The valves are actuated using low friction roller levers equipped with hydraulic compensators.

An interesting timing drive scheme is used in this motor. The belt synchronizes the rotation of one camshaft from the crankshaft. And the second camshaft is synchronized with the first due to the gears on the camshafts. Further more detailed tiguan 2.0 TDI specifications

With all its advantages, diesel power units are more expensive to maintain. However, if you correctly operate the Volkswagen Tiguan diesel engine, then it will last quite a long time.

In 2007, engineers of the German automobile company Volkswagen, based on the Volkswagen Golf hatchback, designed a fundamentally new car - the VW Tiguan. Thanks to the impeccable reputation of the progenitor, the SUV has won universal recognition in a short period of time. True, at the end of 2014, Tiguan lost the first two positions on the popularity pedestal to its competitors Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Already in 2015, the manufacturer announces the start of production of the second generation of the SUV. An exclusive novelty was able to cheer up a market segment.

Today the car is assembled not only in Germany, but also in Russia, in the city of Kaluga. The German company has increased its capacity potential in the domestic car market, thereby heating up additional interest in the SUV from the Russian buyer. Before purchasing an expensive car, it is advisable to familiarize yourself not only with its operational properties, but also with indicators of reliability and durability. Next, we will determine what is the actual engine resource for the Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4, 2.0.

A variation of the line of motors

The Volkswagen Tiguan engine range is represented by turbocharged power units with a displacement of 1.4 and 2.0 liters. 1.4 TSI engine with 122 and 150 hp. also installs on. Gasoline engines are distinguished by excellent technical characteristics and a fairly large resource. As practice shows, the power plants from the VW Tiguan line are capable of traveling 300 or more thousand km. The 2.0 TSI engine is made of a cast iron cylinder block and an aluminum head.

There are several modifications of it, differing in their rated power - 170 and 200 horsepower. A diesel analogue is also available to the buyer. There are no fundamental structural differences between the engines. The difference is that the 170-horsepower version is powered by the BorgWarner Ko3 turbine, and the Ko4 is installed on the more powerful analogue.

Some design features of VW Tiguan engines:

  • Compression ratio 10.5;
  • Number of valves - 16;
  • DOHC / belt;
  • Environmental class corresponding to Euro-5 standards.

The first generation of "Tiguan" was equipped with a 6-speed hydromechanical automatic, and the next generation acquired a 7-speed DSG robot. The transmission of an SUV is known not only for its high-quality assembly, but also for its quiet operation. At the stage of acceleration, the engine is muffled, and at cruise speed only the noise emitted by the tires.

How long does the engine run on the Volkswagen Tiguan

In order to understand what is the actual engine resource for the Volkswagen Tiguan, it is necessary to understand in more detail their design features. The bulk of the owners of the modification with a 1.4-liter engine complains about the designers' miscalculations in the safety margin of the piston group. In particular, the piston itself, which, due to excessive loads and high temperatures, fails prematurely. The first problems with this structural element of the power unit may arise at the turn of 100 thousand km. Also at this stage of the run, it is advisable to monitor the condition of the timing chain. The 2.0 TDI turbo diesel has a belt instead of a chain. The condition of the timing drive must be monitored very carefully. The breakage of this element leads to unpleasant consequences - the valves bend. As you know, the repair and maintenance of German SUVs is not cheap.

When passing the first 150,000 km, an increased oil consumption is observed - it is necessary to replace the oil scraper rings or valves. Diesel 2.0-liter engines outperform gasoline counterparts in terms of actual resource. But, it is worth saying that problems with the injection pump in some cases cannot be avoided. The reason for this is poor quality fuel. Professionals recommend constantly monitoring the condition of the fuel pump pusher; it is best to carry out comprehensive diagnostics every 20-30 thousand km.

The bottom line is the following: a 1.4-liter gasoline engine is able to travel about 300 thousand kilometers, subject to proper and regular maintenance. The diesel analogue travels over 350,000 km before the first overhaul.

Owner reviews about the resource of the power unit

Both turbo engines are of high quality and reliable, have high speed characteristics, but are extremely demanding on the quality of the fuel and engine oil to be filled, and are sensitive to the coolant. All three components must be closely monitored, otherwise you will have to invest in expensive auto repairs. Now let's go directly to the reviews of the owners of the Volkswagen Tiguan, who have empirically determined the duration of the trouble-free operation of the main power unit of the car.

Engine 1.4

  1. Mikhail, Voronezh. I was dissatisfied with the purchase of a representative of the German car industry with a 1.4-liter engine. The motor does not cope with its tasks at all, the Volkswagen Golf with the same engine was several times more cheerful. Plus, the questionable build quality and a very funny resource. I have a Tiguan 2010 and for all this time I have invested in the repair an amount equivalent to the cost of a car. From constant detonations on the pistons, the edges under the rings break. A very demanding car for fuel quality.
  2. Maxim, Yalta. The SUV was generally satisfied, but there is one big BUT. The 1.4 TSI engine, frankly, is too weak and unreliable. For such a colossus, a minimum volume of 1.6 liters is needed and not 150 hp. In the morning we have to start the car like our AvtoVAZ. I refuel at Lukoil AI-95, as recommended by the manufacturer. The chain was installed just awful, flew off, not passing even 80 thousand km. The motor constantly stalled at traffic lights, at any moment it could start to troit. In general, I sold this car and began to sleep well.
  3. Stanislav, Vladivostok. I've been driving Volkswagen Tiguan since 2009. When I approached the 110 thousand km mark, problems with the chain began. Quickly replaced, there were no more breakdowns. For several years now, driving an SUV has brought only positive impressions. For those who like to push the trigger from the start, this car is definitely not suitable. With this mass and power, the chain flies at once.
  4. Egor, Moscow. Been driving since 2015. I clocked 70 thousand km during this time. The thermostat was changed under warranty, and a crack formed in the intake manifold. There are no problems with starting in cold weather, the suspension is of the highest level. The resource of the 1.4 TSI engine is too dependent on the quality of gasoline. Any unsuccessful refueling can turn into trouble. Too late the secret was revealed to me - the aluminum block and plasma spraying "live" with our fuel 100 thousand km.

The 1.4-liter power unit is not bad in terms of its characteristics. However, it is too dependent on the quality of the refueled fuel, the regularity of service and many other external factors. Not the most successful development of German engineers, which is confirmed by the reviews of the former and current owners of the Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4.

Engine 2.0

  1. Nikolay. Urengoy. Since 2008 I have been using a German off-road vehicle with a diesel engine. When passing 170,000 km, I decided to replace the timing belt with rollers and a pump. Now the car starts even better even at -30. A note to drivers: a diesel engine will win in terms of a resource over a gasoline analogue under the same operating conditions and equal working volume.
  2. Sergei. Moscow. When choosing VW Tiguan, we paid great attention to the quality of the engine. After reviewing a large amount of information, I came to the conclusion that the resource of a 2.0-liter engine is much higher than that of less voluminous analogues. In practice, everything has been confirmed - the circuit does not give any signals for the first 200 thousand km. The main thing is to refuel at proven gas stations and use certified oil.
  3. Alexey, St. Petersburg. I have a 2017 car, 2.0 diesel. Before buying, I talked with competent people about the reliability of Tiguan motors. People said the resource of the chain is about 300 thousand km, that is, almost to the first capital. The turbine runs even more, everything is done at a high level. Much depends on the quality of the consumables themselves and the scheduled maintenance of the car.
  4. Matvey. Cheboksary. Ask an experienced VW Tiguan owner which modification is more reliable, he will answer you - a two-liter one. Himself personally saw the car passed more than 300 thousand. The resource also depends on the driving style, the first 200 thousand km generally pass without any problems with adequate driving.

Many car owners agreed that the 2-liter power plant is more reliable and stable in relation to adverse operating conditions. Numerous studies also confirm the fact that in practice the resource of the Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 engine is more than 300 thousand kilometers.
