Oil 10w30 for air-cooled engines. Oil for motoblocks - the key to correct and safe operation

34618 07/28/2019 7 minutes

One of the main factors affecting the resource of an internal combustion engine is the quality of the engine oil and the timing of its replacement. To understand which oil is better to pour into the motor-block engine, you need to have a good understanding of the specifics of its design and operation.

Specific requirements

Most modern motoblocks (the rating of motoblocks can be studied in this article) are equipped with four-stroke gasoline engines that do not have an oil pump in their design.

The lower connecting rod head, which is a sliding bearing, is lubricated by scooping oil with a special protrusion on the lower connecting rod cover, the crankshaft main bearings, the gas distribution mechanism and the cylinder-piston group are lubricated with the resulting splashes.

Also, these engines have unstable temperature conditions due to air cooling.

For more information about the 4-stroke engine, see the video:

Thus, engine oil for 4-stroke engines of motoblocks must meet the following requirements:

  • Low kinematic viscosity in a wide temperature range is necessary to avoid oil starvation when the engine warms up to operating temperature.
  • The use of viscous oils in engines that do not have lubrication under pressure can lead to scuffing on the surface of the connecting rod journal, followed by enveloping of metal in this place and engine jamming.
  • The stable composition of the package of anti-friction and extreme pressure additives will allow the oil to retain its properties for a long time with regular heating-cooling cycles during the operation of the walk-behind tractor.
  • High strength of the oil film is necessary to protect the cylinder-piston group from scoring when the engine overheats during hard work in hot weather.
  • The detergent properties provided by the appropriate additive package must counteract sludge and varnish formation in the engine sump and on oil-wetted surfaces.
  • Low carbon content is relevant for air-cooled engines, since oil entering the piston ring zone heats up in this place to a temperature of 270-300 degrees.
  • The formation of carbon deposits will lead to a loss of mobility of the piston rings and a decrease in compression with a simultaneous overspending of oil.

On the basis of these requirements, it is possible to describe the technical requirements that the oil for 4-stroke engines of motoblocks must meet, as follows:

  • SAE high-temperature viscosity class no more than 30 in temperate climates, 40 - in hot ones. Low-temperature viscosity index - no more than 10W. These requirements are met by common oils of types 10W30, 5W30, 0W30, 5W40, 10W40 (the last two - at temperatures of 30 degrees or more).
  • Pure summer versions - SAE 30, SAE 40. The characteristics of the oils should be read carefully: a number of specialized oils for gardening equipment with a viscosity of 5W30 are intended exclusively for winter use.
  • Oil base: synthetic or semi-synthetic, since mineral oils are practically not found in the indicated viscosity ranges. In addition, they are significantly less stable than synthetics and semi-synthetics.
  • A number of lubricant manufacturers have special ranges of mineral-based oils for gardening equipment, in this case the low cost has a downside in the form of the need for frequent replacement.
  • API quality class (a complex parameter that determines the antifriction, extreme pressure and detergent properties of engine oil, as well as many other parameters) is not lower than SG.

You need to understand that common automotive oils meet all the requirements for motor oils for motor-blocks Cayman, Texas, Foreman, Viking, Sadko, Don, Profi, Carver, the only difference may be its consumption and the amount of carbon deposits formed during long-term operation in an air-cooled engine.

For this reason, although this material considers specialized lubricants, in the absence of the possibility of purchasing them, you can always use automotive engine oils that meet the described requirements.

At the same time, the manufacturer indicated a fairly low flash point - 228 ˚С, which means its high volatility and, accordingly, significant waste consumption.

The price is comparable to other oils of this quality group - 240 rubles per liter.

How much to fill

Most of the motoblocks on the Russian market are equipped with engines of the HondaGX family, their Chinese clones, or Subaru-Robin engines of similar design.

For a single full filling of such an engine with oil, no more than 0.6 liters of oil will be required - that is why such a packaging volume is popular with manufacturers. More powerful modifications of these motors can hold a liter or more of oil.

A number of motors, which are designed with an optional reduction gear, have a separate lubrication space.

Replacement

The oil in the engine of the walk-behind tractor is changed at the intervals specified in its operating manual, usually 60-80 hours. Shorten the specified interval under difficult operating conditions or using cheap mineral oils.

Before changing the oil on the walk-behind tractor, position it so that the engine is horizontal, and warm up the engine so that the oil can drain better. Then remove the oil filler cap and drain plug by placing a container of suitable size under it.

Be careful not to burn yourself with the hot oil.

After waiting for the moment when the used oil stops dripping, screw the drain plug back in place and pour fresh oil into the crankcase through a clean funnel, guided by the passport volume and marks on the oil filler dipstick.

Since the engine is lubricated only by splashing oil from the crankshaft, strive to always maintain the oil level at the "maximum" mark. Low-level filler holes without a dipstick must be filled with oil until it appears on the threads.

If the engine of the walk-behind tractor is equipped with a reduction gear, do the same operations with it. Most often, the gearbox does not have an oil dipstick, and in order to measure the required amount of oil, use a small container of known volume.

Air-cooled 4-stroke engine oils differ from those for water-cooled engines. Therefore, when selecting oils, it is necessary to take into account the marking, the composition of the fluids and the type of engines for which they are designed.

High temperatures in the cylinder-piston group are characteristic of 4-stroke air-cooled engines. The oil does not mix with the fuel and does not enter the combustion chamber, therefore, the engine mixture for the specified type of drives must have the following properties:

  1. An increased number of additives that make up the motor fluid - up to 25% of the total volume.
  2. Stability of viscosity characteristics at different temperature conditions. The lubricant should provide quick and easy engine start, as well as instant oil flow to all rubbing drive elements.
  3. Thermal oxidative stability. The structure of the mixture should be resistant to oxidation reactions, so that sediment and carbon deposits do not form, and the mixture does not become like water in structure.
  4. Improved antiwear and extreme pressure characteristics to protect engine components from tribological loads.

You should not use motor oils developed for engines equipped with water cooling in 4-stroke air-cooled engines, these two types of oils contain a different composition of additives, the former are designed to heat the cylinder bore to a temperature of +160 0 С, and for the latter this parameter is - +220 0 C.

Standards

It is difficult for an ordinary buyer to understand the marking of lubricants, therefore, often unscrupulous sellers issue fluids for 2-stroke engines instead of 4-stroke ones. By purchasing such products, you reduce the drive life, so before going to the auto shop, check the generally accepted standards indicating that the engine oil is suitable for air-cooled four-stroke drives:

  1. The operating class according to the API system must comply with the requirements of SF / CC, not lower.
  2. According to GOST, motor oil for these drives corresponds to group G.
  3. SAE requires the fluid to meet the requirements of the vehicle dealer. This information can be found in the service book or on the filler cap. For air-cooled engines, it is recommended to fill in oil with the SAE designation 30 - year class of engine mixtures, the specified lubricant is thick enough so as not to quickly dilute at high operating temperatures.

When choosing a base car oil, for engines with an air-cooled system, consider:

  1. Mineral water - reduces frictional force, reduces wear of drive elements, burning does not form carbon deposits and smoke, using it you can use leaded or unleaded gasoline.
  2. Semi-synthetics - it is used with fuel of not very high quality, it is recommended for engines with a heavy load, it ensures the stability of its structure during operation, but has increased fluidity, it is applicable with leaded and unleaded gasoline.
  3. Synthetics - prevents carbon formation, protects the engine from wear, is applicable only with unleaded fuel.

When choosing a lubricant, take into account the season when the vehicle will be used, summer types of oils begin to crystallize at temperatures below -10 0 C, winter ones withstand -25 0 C, all-season ones provide engine protection at any time of the year. See SAE classification for their operating temperature range.

The quality product can indicates that the lubricant is suitable for air-cooled 4-stroke drives. Correctly selected fluids must meet the vehicle dealer's requirements to ensure proper engine operation. Preference should be given to products of well-known brands, for which the sellers have a quality certificate. An improperly selected engine oil will lead to increased carbon formation, increased fuel consumption, and rapid engine breakdown.

When choosing a particular brand of oil, please note that motorcycle oils differ in the quantitative composition of antifriction additives. This is due to the operating mode of the power units, snowmobiles, for example, are designed for extreme load conditions, and scooters are used under much better operating conditions. The lubricants for these types of equipment will have a different composition and additives.

Air-cooled four-stroke engines require lubricants. Moreover, such that the quality meets the requirements that we will talk about.

Owners of equipment prefer to use oil marked Sae, which must be filled into the engine at an air temperature of at least 5 ° C. It contains a multifunctional additive package with anti-wear and anti-corrosion properties.

This fluid well protects the friction parts of the engine from wear and overheating, ensures its cleanliness and increases the service life. Sae lubricants are manufactured with different base types, which affects their market value.

So, the price of synthetics for a package of a liter container varies from 240 to 290 rubles, mineral - from 350 to 510 rubles.

Scout-5L oil also has exceptional lubricating characteristics, which has won a high reputation among domestic owners of motoblocks and can be called a full-fledged analogue of Sae 30. It is comparable in quality, but more affordable in price, which makes this product even more in demand. Such oil in a 5-liter container costs 1390 rubles, which in terms of 1 liter is only 278 rubles.

What is the difference between two-stroke oil and four-stroke oil

Some types of engine oil are designed for four-stroke power units, while others are for two-stroke ones. They are not interchangeable, and they should be poured in accordance with the intended purpose, because different requirements are imposed on lubricants for motors with different duty cycles. Thus, oil for four-stroke engines, which uses a forced lubrication system, is designed for long-term exposure and is designed to provide a more stable coating of parts. In 2-stroke engines, oil enters with the fuel and should instantly dissolve in it, burning smokelessly with a minimum of deposits in the form of soot and ash. Therefore, a characteristic feature of 2-stroke oils is their good cleaning and a minimum content of aggressive additives. They, in contrast to 4-stroke fluid, do not contain ash, EP and anti-wear additives, which allows them to almost completely burn together with fuel without the formation of carbon deposits and exhaust toxicity.

A feature of oils for four-stroke engines is the content of many organometallic additives, which are aimed at improving their physical and mechanical properties and increasing the efficiency of action. And if such a mixture is poured into an engine with a working cycle of two strokes, it will lead to the formation of ash deposits on the surface of the piston and on the walls of the combustion chamber. The increased accumulation of deposits, in turn, can provoke the appearance of various troubles, which can be eliminated only by doing a complex and expensive repair of the motor-block motor. A lot of harm is caused by soot, which clogs the air filter and settles in the grooves of the piston rings if the inappropriate oil is used. The accumulation of soot is fraught with loss of ring mobility, and this is a direct way to reduce the power of the walk-behind tractor engine, deteriorate its operation and even complete failure.

Classification of motor oils

The most important parameters for an engine oil are the viscosity grade and the temperature range over which it can be used. In the marking, the number in front of the letter "W" indicates the temperature at which the liquid thickens. The number after the letter indicates the maximum temperature at which it ensures uninterrupted engine operation. These indicators must correspond to those indicated in the operating instructions for the garden walk-behind tractor. It should also be borne in mind that high-viscosity lubricants, such as Sae 30, Sae 40, are intended for use in equipment in the summer, and low-viscosity, for example, 5W30, for its winter operation. A low-viscosity oil product will quickly evaporate at high temperatures and will not be able to provide full lubrication of mechanisms. Too thick liquid will become an obstacle to starting the engine at low air temperatures.

The chemical composition of the base of the lubricant is also important, since it affects the properties of the product and determines its effect.

Mineral engine oil:

  • provides a decrease in friction force;
  • reduces the formation of sludge and carbon deposits;
  • reduces wear of working parts;
  • does not form harmful exhaust and does not pollute the air.

Synthetics contain additives that prevent carbon formation and protect the power unit from wear. Semi-synthetics are produced by mixing mineral and synthetic bases with the use of special additives.

Benefits of synthetic and semi-synthetic motor fluid:

  • increased fluidity;
  • low volatility;
  • low consumption for waste.

For 4-stroke engines of walk-behind tractors, cultivators and other garden equipment, oil products with the Sae-30 marking, which have a high viscosity and are intended for summer use, are excellent. They can be produced on a mineral or synthetic base and contain various additives. A fluid with such markings reliably protects rubbing surfaces from corrosion and rapid wear, prolongs the life of the engine.

An analogue of the summer Sae-30 can be any multigrade oil, in the designation of which the second number is "30". For example, a liquid marked "5W-30" has similar characteristics when used in summer, but it can also be poured in winter, when the air temperature is not lower than -35 o C. Grease "10W-30" also has similar Cae 30 properties when used in the warm season, but its operating range is limited to a temperature of -25 o C.

The most popular brands of Sae 30 summer oils and multigrade oils are described below.

This grade of grease is all-season and can be used in a wide temperature range - from -25 o C to +40 o C without reducing its properties.

Choosing the best oil for a walk-behind tractor and cultivator

Having a cultivator with a Chinese, American engine or a walk-behind tractor with a Honda engine, you need to remember that the duration of the operation of the motor unit is affected not only by the timeliness of troubleshooting, but also by the quality of the oil used, as well as the regularity of its replacement. An incorrectly selected mixture or improper lubrication of parts in friction zones leads to increased carbon formation, an increase in fuel consumption and a quick engine breakdown.

Lubricants for 4-stroke engines of motor vehicles are produced in a fairly wide range - from budget to more expensive. To choose the right product, you need to navigate the labeling and parameters that indicate its main criteria. So, the "S" marking classifies the group of lubricants provided for gasoline engines, and the "C" letter - for diesel ones.

A number of automotive lubricants also meet all the requirements for motor lubricants for motor-blocks Neva, Scout, Crosser, Salyut, Zubr, Favorit, Dobrynya and other models equipped with a four-stroke air-cooled engine. To the question: "Is it possible to pour car oil into the walk-behind tractor?" experts answer - "Yes, only when using different grades of liquid, different consumption rates and the degree of carbon deposits can be observed." But they do not recommend pouring transmission fluid into the motor-block motor, explaining this by the fact that this type of substance is not intended to work in the range of high speeds and high temperatures. If the transmission is poured into the engine, it will begin to burn intensively, precipitate, clog the channels and the air filter, which can lead to serious damage.

How much do you need to fill?

Cultivators, mini tractors and walk-behind tractors supplied to the Russian market are mainly equipped with power plants from Subaru, Briggs & Stratton, Honda or their Chinese counterparts. They can be of different power and hold different amounts of grease. How do you know how much lubricant to pour out of the canister so that the 4-stroke engine works in optimal mode and its parts are not erased from lack of lubrication?

The consumption rates of lubricants can be found in the operating instructions or technical documentation attached to the motorcycle.

The table below shows the individual lubrication rates for the most popular engine models.

Required volume, l

Subaru EX21D (7.0 HP)

Subaru EH34B (11.0 HP)

Briggs & Stratton (8.0 to 13.5 hp)

Honda GX-390 (8.0-13.0 HP)

You can simply fill in motor lubricant by determining its amount using the dipstick on the plug. The minimum level is practically limited by the length of the dipstick itself, and the maximum level reaches the drain thread. You can also navigate by looking through the crankcase hole.

As a rule, about 0.6 liters of liquid is placed in a walk-behind tractor with a 6-8-strong engine, a little more than 1 liter in more powerful units. It is not for nothing that the most popular packaging among manufacturers is a volume of 0.6 liters. It is this rate of oil that is enough to fill up to the full level motor vehicles of medium power, which are in greatest demand among owners of garden and suburban areas.

Prices

High-quality four-stroke oils for motoblocks are produced by companies from different countries, including Russia, France, Germany, Sweden, and the USA. A wide price range and a variety of products allows you to choose the most optimal option for any unit of small-sized agricultural machinery.

What is SAE 30 motor oil? This question is of interest to many drivers. Viscosity is considered a key indicator of the quality of a lubricant. In view of this, in the marking of engine oil, information about this parameter occupies the main place.

Viscosity is the ability of a lubricating film to remain intact regardless of temperature and pressure conditions. Reducing the friction of the contacting elements ensures their resistance to wear. Oil with a low viscosity will not be able to properly protect the motor, it will quickly evaporate at high temperatures. Too thick car oil will not allow the power unit to start in winter.

Features of lubrication and decoding of marking

Passing through the lubrication complex, the oil liquid covers all its elements, serves as a kind of border between them. As long as the contacting parts are separated by an oil film, they cannot strongly influence each other, do not wear out. In order to correctly choose a car oil, you need to know how its marking is deciphered. Each grease can has many different symbols to indicate the characteristics of the petroleum product. If the car oil can be poured at any time, it has the letter "w" in the marking. Lubricants that are only intended for a specific time of year are marked with a combination of "SAE" and a number.

The viscosity of any lubricant, be it mineral oil or semi-synthetic, is determined by the following test. The container is filled with oil. The viscosity depends on the time it takes for the lubricant to drain entirely from the container through the hole. The thicker the engine oil, the longer it will take. This characteristic is measured in centistokes. On the canister, it is indicated implicitly. Oil SAE 30 has a viscosity of 9.4-12.4.

Every grease that has a similar viscosity is a product similar to the SAE thirtieth oil. This mineral motor oil is intended for use only in summer, at temperatures up to plus twenty-five degrees. In view of this, it is often poured into rather worn out power units. Today, universal oils have practically pushed seasonal oils out of the market. Any manufacturer determines during production which oil will be optimal for his vehicles. The engine parts of the machine are suitable for the recommended lubricant. All indicators of car operation, which are indicated in the manual, also depend on the recommended car oil.

For this reason, before adding any grease, consult the operating manual. No need to experimentally choose a car oil. Better to trust your vehicle manufacturer.

How to choose SAE oil

Typically, the lubricant for the power unit is chosen based on how worn out it is.

  1. If the car has worked out no more than one-fourth of its own resource, that is, it is considered almost new, the use of universal motor oils 5w30 / 10w is recommended for it
  2. If the car has used more than half of its own resource, it is optimal to use 10w40, 15w40 in the summer season, and in winter - 5w30, 10w 5w40 can be cast all year round.
  3. 15w40 and 20w40 are poured into cars that have practically worked their way out, in cold weather - 5w40 and 10w40, in any season - 5w

Currently, there are many fakes of popular oils. The markings on the counterfeit grease cans are not true. In view of this, such oils are capable of leading to engine breakdown. You should carefully consider the choice of oil liquid, purchase it only in trusted stores.

Signs of counterfeiting

  1. Label. Counterfeiters forget to include all the information on the label. Before purchasing a car oil, find out what the original label looks like.
  2. Colour. Usually, fake petroleum products are much darker than real ones.
  3. Structure. The original grease leaves no residue, it does not contain various foreign particles.
  4. Cost. It is suspicious if a car oil from a well-known manufacturer costs mere pennies. If the price of a petroleum product is too low, know that it is most likely a fake.
  5. Paper test. High-quality oil leaves no visible trace, flowing down a simple piece of paper. A fake leaves a dark mark on itself.

On the left is fake oil with poor-quality seams, roughness.
