Our audi a4 tests. Comparative test drive of the new Audi A4

Tuesday. The documents are in order, the keys are in hand, everything is ready for the test. The blood began to move faster and faster, because these days I will spend with a handsome man who attracts the eyes of others and loves to be quick. So, we meet the petrol Audi A4 Quattro harnessed from 249 horses, ready to "beat" many authorities.

Taking the official brochure, they promise me: An even more powerful, more efficient and more intelligent car: the new Audi A4 impresses with its innovative combination of technology and aesthetic qualities. The innovative Audi virtual cockpit with 12.3-inch high-definition LCD and optional Bang & Olufsen surround sound system create impressive accents in interior design and meet high-end standards. Let's take a closer look at what's true and what's marketing. Go.

Appearance

The front grille, aggressive headlights, strict "facial features" indicate that a person is driving this car who likes not only to move from point A to point B, but loves to do it with pleasure. Correctly selected color, "correct" wheels and RLine trim - all this gives the car the sporty spirit for which Audi has always been famous and famous.

Interior design and quality of materials

Sitting in the salon you immediately plunge into the atmosphere familiar to every Audi connoisseur. The dashboard and steering wheel are eye-catching. I really love the styling in the design of the Audi, and in A4 it is more well displayed than ever. The correct shapes and stylish design in the details attract those who love order on their desk and in the car. In the Audi A4, this can be seen in all the details of the cabin.

Confused only by the display, which is "small", "plastic" and very much like a cheap Chinese tablet 5 years ago. Is it really impossible to make a metal frame around it in the style of an aluminum "decoration, which stretches across the entire width of the car's interior. The picture quality is also a little outdated, on the other hand, there are no freezes and the system response in the navigator or multimedia works at a height. So you start to think what is more important is the quality of the monitor picture as on an iPhone or the speed of typing in the navigator or when searching for a song.

The chairs are comfortable, the buttons are practical, the steering wheel is comfortable to hold in your hands, there is enough space for your legs, enough space for coffee, a phone and a key. Everything you need for every day within reach with one hand. As in any car, there are places of practical plastic, which is annoying, but you quickly get used to it.

Convenience behind the wheel

It doesn't matter which model I sit in, whether it's a compact Audi TT or a large Audi A8, I always think about only one thing - is it convenient for me and when I can start. Sitting behind the wheel in the Audi A4, I feel "at ease": a good view from the front, a sufficient size of the mirror with a "dead center" function and a comfortable fit in the chair. He sat down, pressed the "button" and drove off. The soul desires speed and an empty road, but the congested traffic of the morning stream of cars hints to me: "speed will have to wait."

Back comfort

Audi A4 is a car in which you will constantly drive, so all the power is directed there. As for the back seat, there is enough space for children (from babies in a special chair to teenagers). A low and medium height adult passenger in the back will have enough space, but without any special "chips". This is a practical car for a small family with children or for young people who like to move in a fast pace of life. On long journeys, the rear passengers will have enough space, but you will have to surround yourself with all sorts of additional travel pillows that "soften" your journey.

Car dynamics

I can talk about the dynamics of the car for hours. It's not a sporty version of the RS4, but the package I have for a test drive allows me to brighten weekdays with adrenaline rushes. It perfectly stands on the road, it fits perfectly into turns, it moves perfectly at the moment of "sharp transitions" from one lane to another. You get used to the car instantly, so much so that after the test you don't want to leave.

How good it is to leave the "preoccupied with business Moscow" on weekdays around noon. Fewer cars, less traffic and more options. Lightly pressing the gas pedal and narrower. on the speedometer, the border zone between the maximum permissible speed and violation of traffic rules. It's a pity there is no way to go to the landfill, there I would not throw less than 200 km / h. It wants to go fast and long. You don't get tired behind the wheel.

Having tried 249 horses on A4 and A6, I can confidently answer myself. Audi A4 with 249 horses brings much more excitement and desire to recklessly than its older brother. The weight of the Audi A4 car speaks strongly in favor of the younger brother.

Acceleration time 0-100 km / h (sec): 5.8 Maximum speed (km / h) 250 - Vehicle handling

The car behaves as expected. Where acceleration is needed, there it accelerates sharply, while you are in control of the situation and with a slight movement of the steering wheel, you can quickly avoid any "slowdowns". He listens to you instantly. There is no need to worry that when you turn quickly to the left, you may not have time to pass. The Audi A4 does it quickly.

An interesting feature "autopilot". Turn on the autopilot mode, release the gas and brake pedals, release the steering wheel, etc. he begins to move and control the situation himself. The car monitors the flow from the front and decides what to do. When the car in front brakes, the Audi A4 brakes, when it is necessary to stop, it stops completely. It really works and it is really convenient.

Moving in traffic, I constantly turned on this function and wanted to find vulnerabilities in it. Something must be wrong. I do not believe that technology has already achieved the ability to manage my security without my participation. The Audi A4 proved that standing in a traffic jam, you can actually read a newspaper or write messages, but so far this is prohibited. The laws do not allow driving on full autopilot, so after a certain time the car reminds me that I need to keep the steering wheel in my hands. However, it should be noted that the autopilot is convenient to use in the city, but not on the Moscow Ring Road, where the flow often changes and there is no "smooth and uniform movement".

In the description of the car, we are hinted at a combined cycle of 7.7 l / 100 km, but this is only if you really do not get into traffic jams and do not like to use the autopilot. I didn't manage to reach less than 10 liters, but I spent a lot of time testing the autopilot, driving slowly "in the stream" and at high speeds on the highway. The next day I tried myself in the role of a calm family man (turned on Eco mode), who leaves the house, takes the children to school and goes to the office within the "second ring", I managed to reach 8.5 liters.

The price of the Audi A4 car starts at 1.9 million rubles. But this is the starter version. If you want to get a complete set that was for a test drive, the price can reach about 2.8-3.1 million rubles, depending on your imagination.

After a video test drive on the channel, I received a lot of private messages on Instagram on the topic "why take an Audi A4 for 3 million, because for this money you can take an A6 or a new BMW 5 series?"

I usually answer this question with the words that one friend told me about 10 years ago: "Why carry air, for this order a bead."

If your family consists of 2-4 people, and the children are still small, I do not see the point in the "minimal" A6 or BMW 5, I recommend assembling an excellent complete set of Audi A4 for 2.4-2.6 million and "do not carry air".

If you are a young promising guy or girl and want to have a nimble, comfortable car and do not worry about parking space, you should pay attention to the "average" or "expensive" equipment and enjoy the dynamics of the car.

Audi A4 once again convinced me that Audi continues to develop and delight everyone who buys their cars.

No matter how you walk around, the A4 has not changed much - marketers have long been established in the opinion that Audi is loved for its classic proportions. But so that we don’t think that the whole thing is in a creative crisis, or we do not accuse the designers of idleness, they say at the press conference: B9 differs from B8 by 90%, and the entire body is made from scratch on the modular MLB Evo platform, which is a novelty shares with the new Q7.

I don't know if this is good or bad, but it's hard to talk about the A4 design. Whether it's Volvo S90, , - that's where you can either scold or praise the designers. And here - "another Audi". Those who are alien to conservatism will yawn and turn away. Fans will begin to suck at a larger and more "aggressive" radiator grille, sharply defined headlights, as if spied on from Volvo "Thor's hammers" in the corners of the front bumper ...

But following the designers of the past generation is still too obvious. It comes to the point that all the "ribs" and lines on the body are the same as their predecessor, only slightly different. More convex, sharper, larger ...

What's inside?

I tested a new one last summer which impressed me a lot. Even then I thought that the developers of a related Audi of the same class would have to work hard to offer something more. And it seems to me that they even overdid it. In terms of its dimensions and space in the cabin, the new A4 turned out to be one of the largest in its class. Moreover, it is a few millimeters smaller than the Audi A6 C5, and even longer in wheelbase! Compared to its predecessor, the novelty has grown by 25 mm in length, 11 mm in width and 12 mm in wheelbase. The trunk volume of the sedan also increased - from 480 to 505 liters. At the same time, the total weight of the car has decreased for all - by 30-120 kg, depending on the version and equipment. The starting A4 with a 1.4 engine weighs "dry", without technical fluids and people, 1,320 kilograms. In addition, compared with ardent rivals (Mercedes C-class and BMW 3-series), the new A4 is the longest, however, Mercedes has a longer wheelbase - by 20 mm.

1 / 4

2 / 4

3 / 4

4 / 4

Inside, there are also solid pluses in all respects. There is more space both in front and behind. Compared to the previous generation, 24 mm are added above the head, and 23 mm for the knees sitting behind. Of course, you won't sit in the back like in the A8, but even with a height above average, the driver will sit down without any problems "by himself." You can also take the child in your arms.

By default, the A4 is equipped with xenon headlights and nearly three dozen security systems. To make it clearer - this model has everything the same as. As for the Euro NCAP tests, among the models tested in 2015 in the D-class, the Audi A4 bypassed Renault Talisman, Kia Optima and Skoda Superb and only slightly behind Toyota Avensis and Jaguar XE.

The interior of the Audi A4 is like the most affordable Parker pen. Even if without gold and engraving, but it itself "lies" in the hand and pleases the eye. So here - no leather, no wood, but you can feel the wealthy German quality. True, single-zone climate control as standard sounds like an insult. However, the "base" is one thing and the options are quite another. According to the German tradition, the car can be "stuffed" as you like. But - for the money. As a result, the cost of a car "for yourself" can be one and a half, two, or even three times higher than the price of the basic version. There are many more “delicacies” in the Audi menu than in the most elite restaurants. Want a Bang & Olufsen audio system - no question. Want adaptive Matrix LED headlights with automatic dimming? Or maybe you can submit the most "advanced" adaptive cruise control? He is able not only to maintain a distance, but also paired with the Audi pre sense city system to independently stop the car in case of danger (at speeds up to 40 km / h) and even "steer" in the stream (up to 65 km / h) ...

But there is also an electronic instrument panel, already familiar from several models, which allows you to "equip" the dashboard at your own request. Like the Q7, you can expand / shrink the gauges, display the map in full screen or play economy driving, following the advice of the car. Against this background, the stationary "tablet" of the central display without sensors looks archaic. Multimedia supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play and allows you to display a map from a smartphone on the central monitor, and leave Audi cartography on the tidy - as it is convenient for anyone.

Voice control left a double impression. The system is able to understand natural phrases like “I want to dine in a restaurant” or “I want to stop by a gas station”. How well does voice control work? She understands English well, but she is not yet “friendly” with the Russian language - she has not been fully trained, apparently, to understand the cases. Although, perhaps, the cars that have arrived in Russia are already capable of listening in Russian. And a little more about the options ... There are very convenient screens for rear passengers. In fact, these are tablets (Pegatron, Taiwan), and in this case - lo and behold - removable. They have an Android platform and 32 GB memory, and are wirelessly paired with MMI plus multimedia. Wireless charging for smartphones is also provided - in the armrest between the driver and passenger.

Technics

In Russia, the new Audi A4 is offered with five engines - three petrol and two diesel. All - turbocharged inline "four", and the power of the petrol and diesel is the same, which causes confusion in the configurator at first. 1.4 TFSI and 2.0 TDI each have 150 forces. 190 each have 2.0 TFSI and another 2.0 TDI. At the top of the Russian lineup is a 249-horsepower two-liter gasoline engine. The base motor is available with "mechanics" and a 7-speed "robot" S-Tronic, and all the others are equipped with a robotic gearbox without any alternative. Diesel three-liter V6 of 272 forces, combined with an 8-speed "hydromechanics", we have not presented - at least for now.

1 / 2

2 / 2

According to the Germans, all motors are 21% more economical. This is due not only to technical innovations, but also to the reduction in weight of the car, due to the even wider use of aluminum, and aerodynamics. Audi claims a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.23. This is true, but only in the case of the 190-horsepower 2.0 TDI ultra, which has active louvers hidden behind the grille and aerodynamically effective underbody protection. For other versions, a value of 0.26 is valid. As before, the front suspension has double wishbones, but with design changes - the levers are attached to the body, not to the subframes. At the rear is a five-link suspension with four upper wishbones.

How's it going?

For A4, two types of chassis are offered - conventional and adaptive, and each of them has "sport" and "comfortable" presets, which differ in both ground clearance and rigidity. I did not feel any fundamental difference in behavior. Probably, roads were needed without speed limits and with sharper turns. On public roads around Venice, I feel that there is no sense in the sports suspension. I believe that in Moscow, or even more so in the regions, this is also a rather meaningless option, unless the owner plans visits on track days. The "comfortable" adaptive suspension is just fine. The compromise of settings is almost ideal for roads of average "killed". Driving on a "washboard", cornering with excessive speed - it will forgive everything. This is not a hovercraft, although it “floats” just as quietly.

I will not tire of repeating - the insulation is fantastic. So much so that you do not understand whether you have a diesel engine under the hood or a gasoline engine, you are driving 200 km / h on asphalt or sneaking on gravel. The secret is not only in a good soundproofing layer on the body, but also in the double glazing - it is, however, optional. Traditionally, there was little time for on-site test drives to get to know the car, so I couldn't try all the versions in practice - I had to choose. All diesels, which are traditionally not very favored in the D-class, fell victim to. But I tried almost everything gasoline, albeit a little. The basic version is offered with a 1.4 TFSI petrol engine for 150 forces, aggregated with a six-speed "mechanics". Brisk acceleration, excellent selectivity of the "mechanics" - an absolutely reasonable-sufficient car, which will certainly appeal to service parks and taxis. By the way, it accelerates to 100 km / h in 8.7 seconds, so if necessary, you can "light up" a little.

I drive my Audi A4 through a city filled with morning traffic. In the cabin, you can hear only the muffled bass of the motor during acceleration and the rustle of air in the ventilation system when we stop at the next traffic light. On a green signal, the Start-Stop system restarts the engine, the sedan starts gently and accelerates smoothly to the next intersection. However, this is seeming smoothness - for the next red I arrive first, not even thinking of competing with someone. I’m thinking about something else: why did Audi suddenly care about the new A4? We have finally changed Q7 - that's understandable. The new A8 is just around the corner - also predictable. But the "four"?

Fathers, the last generation debuted eight years ago! But it seems to me that it was about the day before yesterday ... It's just that the Audi A4 is a rare case of an ageless car. The exterior is quite relevant and after eight years (especially since exactly in the middle of life the car had a facelift), the engines are modern, the chassis - with all the bells and whistles, including active steering and adjustable shock absorbers. A gentleman's set of electronics is also present. What else is needed?

Need. For Audi itself, the “four” is more important than any Q7. In the big German three, she is in the first roles only in the DTM championship. And in terms of sales, A4 is traditionally inferior to both the C-class and BMW's three-ruble note. And in this race the eight-year-old “old woman” had no chance. Which, however, did not detract from her merits.

So, it seems, and the designers of "Four Rings" thought. The appearance of the new sedan has more sharp edges, but the general style has been preserved: with a hexagonal grille shield, circular outlines of wheel arches and spectacular (this time double) strokes of running lights. There are xenon headlights, just LED-diodes and matrix adaptive, like the A8. On the whole, the Quartet is still a real business woman. A strict suit, discreet makeup, proper nutrition.

The Ingolstadt diet, by the way, works - the car has slightly grown in size, but in some trim levels it has become lighter by more than 100 kg! The body remained steel (although it dropped about 15 kg), and lu-minia was added to the chassis. From it, half of the front subframe, brake calipers, some levers of the front and rear suspension, the frame of the front panel and even partly the wiring!

The engineers also worked on the power units. The base will be a lightweight 1.4 TFSI turbo engine, developing 150 hp. And the new 2.0 TFSI will probably become the most “common” in Russia. It does not have the highest power for a two-liter turbo - 190 hp. (there is another option in 249 forces), but a very high compression ratio - 11.7. Such a motor, thanks to direct injection and double cams on the intake and exhaust camshafts, can operate according to the Miller cycle. Why all these tricks? To save money - the “passport” consumption of A4 2.0 TFSI is only 4.8 l / 100 km!

BMW 320i
It's tighter inside, it has a shorter list of options. But the driver has more emotions

In conjunction with the engine, a new 7-speed "preselection" is working - and this is a happy marriage. From the next traffic light, they accelerate the "four" exactly, but energetically. The turbo lag of the engine is almost not felt, gear changes are quick and timely. Only the voice at the engine is bland and at times too insistent. But this is an illusion. It's just that the rest of the noises, even at high speed, hardly penetrate into the cabin - they paid special attention to sound insulation. And those who don’t skimp on the optional Bang & Olufsen (with 3D sound) for 80,000 will also get the Active Noise Cancellation system.

The seriously redesigned chassis also feels as friendly as possible ... until the first hatch. Bang bang! - the blow comes out sensitive. Why is it so tough? The answer is in the equipment list: the optional sports suspension (minus 20 mm of ground clearance). Yes, driving a sedan follows a needle like thread. And the steering itself is pleasantly sharp and commendably informative - Audi still has one of the best electric power steering in the world. But for all the acuteness of management, there is no excitement in the character of the “four”. She - like a medalist at school - is correct and learns only by five. But for some reason, others are winning medals at the Olympiads ... Take a standard comfortable suspension, or better - an adaptive one.

However, choosing a suspension won't be the most difficult task. Here is the interior equipment ... Aluminum or wood? Fabric, leather, alcantara? A regular shield or a virtual one? Do you need Internet access and navigation with traffic jams or do we just have to use our own smartphone that can be controlled via MMI? Should the rear passengers take Android tablets or will 3-zone climate control be enough for them? And how can you help yourself, the driver? The word “assist” in the configurator dazzles the eyes - the Tour package (active cruise control with Stop & Go function, Lane assist with auto steering, traffic sign control, etc.), City assist (this is control of lane changes and “oncoming lane” when turning left ), A “parking” package with all-round cameras and a car park. There is even a "warning" when opening the door - in case some horseman rushes past. In short, the arsenal is impressive. There remains a trifle - to beat their competitors in the premium three ...

TEXT: VALERY ARUTIN

To date, there are many comparative videos of test drives of the giants of the car market Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW on the network. It should come as no surprise, then, that Audi has pulled out all of its trump cards to ensure the seventh generation A4 is a worthy contender. Test drives, reviews and owner reviews of the Audi A4 B9 show that this is a spacious, well-built car and offers a classy interior, not only in terms of space, but also in terms of workmanship.

Pros:

  • quiet car,
  • excellent brakes,
  • more space in the cabin than competitors,
  • record aerodynamics,
  • a wide range of electronics, including security systems, even in basic configurations,
  • flexible settings of the instrument panel.

Minuses:

  • high prices,
  • long reaction when moving the foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal,
  • in the Audi A4, external buttons have been removed as much as possible, so at first it can be difficult to find a particular function.

Diseases:

  • jerks in a robotic box in sport mode,
  • among cars manufactured before December 2016, there were 3 manufacturer recalls: the first concerned the driver's seat backrest adjustment, the second concerned the seat belt and airbag pretensioners, and the third concerned the coolant pumps of the TFSI engine.
  • rare complaints about a flickering screen in the center console and problems with connecting some phone models to the multimedia system.

Big test drive two-liter gasoline Audi A4 B9

Overview of complete sets, engines of the new Audi A4. Feeling of comfort in the cabin and volume of space, fuel consumption, comparison with VW Passat. Test drive and driving experience.

The Audi A4 has gotten, let's not be afraid of the word, an evolutionary design in its day, and the B9 generation has been criticized for being too similar to its predecessors, but the A4 is still a well thought out car in terms of design and technology, which is especially thrown into eyes in sporty trim or S-line performance.

What's more, the new Audi A4 has even more passenger space, more than the BMW 3 Series (the trunks are the same size), which means it matches its other German rival, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

A4 B9 comes with two engines, but expands the range of choice by different levels of "turbo". The range starts with a 1.4-liter engine and ends with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine, squeezing out of its two liters as much as 250 horsepower, as well as a high-torque two-liter diesel engine. All cars are equipped with a mechanic or a robotic box to choose from.

Speaking of fuel economy, the results of test drives of the Audi A4 showed that it is logical that two-liter diesels are the most budgetary options. According to the manufacturer, it consumes 4.8 liters per hundred in urban conditions. Real consumption for a test drive is about 6-7 liters.

While the A4 is ideally suited for test drives on the highways, it is not as fun to drive as the BMW 3-Series, and Audi lags behind its more manageable competitor in steering clarity and a suspension that doesn't offer the same agility. The sporty versions of the Audi A4 have a fairly stiff suspension, although additional adaptive dampers do the trick if you can find one in a used condition. If you can't, buy an Audi A4 B9 on smaller rims and avoid low profile tires.

In general, the A4 has something to offer the Russian: good engines, excellent interior and decent electronics are a great buy.

Detailed overview of vehicle electronics systems. Description of the target audience Audi A4. Calculation of the cost of maintenance and car ownership.

Prices for this generation A4 start at almost RUR 2 million, and that's for an empty package on the mechanics, although since this model is fairly new its prices drop pretty quickly. But used cars don't get much cheaper over time, so don't expect low aftermarket prices for a used Audi A4 B9.

How much does an Audi A4 service cost?

The A4 has impressive fuel consumption figures on paper, but it can't keep up with those figures with normal driving. Under these conditions, a 1.4 TFSI test drive will achieve a consumption of almost 9 liters per 100 km. While the larger 2.0-liter petrol engine will absorb almost 10 liters. 2.0 TFSI with 250 horsepower eats about 12 liters per hundred.

Diesel engines are better in this regard, the 2.0 TDI consumes an average of 6-7 liters in test drives. There is also a three-liter diesel engine, which is not officially sold in Russia. Its consumption is about 10-11 liters per hundred.

Transport tax and compulsory motor third party liability insurance rates are quite low. Even with the most powerful 250 horsepower engine, they will not cost the maximum and will cost about 20 thousand rubles. The thing is that according to the documents, this engine has 249 hp, and the last step to significantly increase the tax and insurance rate coefficient is 250 hp.

All Audi are generally quite expensive when it comes to servicing franchised dealers.

How to choose a used Audi A4?

Many A4s are leased, which means they can have significant mileage, which in turn means the possibility of twisting mileage. Therefore, carefully monitor the indirect indicators of mileage: the condition of the interior, brake discs, tires, and the like. You should also carefully check the condition of the paintwork. The most unsightly abrasions and chips will be present at the end of the rental period, but they can often lead to more significant consequences.

The A4's high quality fit and finish also makes it an ideal buying candidate, so make sure your service history is completely clean and there are no mileage discrepancies. Look at the seats, pedals and steering wheel to make sure wear is commensurate with mileage. Evaluate the A4 on a test drive, listen for extraneous noise and knocks.

There are three official recalls to be aware of for A4s manufactured prior to December 2016. One concerns a potential seatback malfunction, the second concerns the seat belt pretensioners and airbags, and the third concerns the TFSI engine coolant pumps.

What are the most common Audi A4 problems?

The number of reported faults on the A4 is relatively low as the car is still new, although issues with the car's infotainment system are a concern as some models' phones sometimes don't connect properly and flickering screens are the main complaints. The latest software from Audi can cure many of these problems.

Despite the A4's reputation for large interiors, there were some problems with crickets in the shelves and buzzing of interior trims.

Previous generations of the TFSI petrol engine had some problems with the camshaft release and chain tensioners, but these problems seem to have been fixed for the A4 in the B9 generation.

There are no special problems with diesel fuel in Russian realities, except for diesel particulate filters (DPF). But it can affect modern diesel engines if they are not hot enough to recover DPF. If most of your driving will be short city trips, then the gasoline model is the best choice.

Is the Audi A4 a reliable car or not?

This generation of Audi A4 is too new for any specific reliability data, and as it stands, all models will be covered by the original manufacturer's warranty.

While the 2.0 TDI A4 engine is the economy champion, the petrol car is also worth recommending. The 1.4 TFSI has great fuel economy records on paper, but its low-powered engine can get a little boring. Since the 2.0 TFSI (190hp) offers similar savings with improved performance, this is the best choice. The European 3.0 TDI models are also good in handling and reasonably economical, but finding them among the used Audi A4 B9 is quite problematic today.
