Geely Emgrand 7 is a restyled modification of the popular Chinese sedan Emgrand EC7, which entered the Russian market in 2016. Like any other car, the sedan has its own operational characteristics and common "sores", noted by a large number of owners. We will talk about them in this article.

General operating problems

When choosing a car, experts recommend paying attention to the configuration with a 1.8 engine (129 hp). With a 1.5-liter engine with 106 hp. the sedan accelerates too imposingly and is only suitable for leisurely driving in city traffic jams.

In this case, it is worth considering the features of the installed checkpoint. The mechanics on Emgrand are more stable. Immediately after buying a new Geely Emgrand 7, it is recommended to check and adjust the camber / toe, as quite often dealerships come with a poorly adjusted suspension, which affects the handling and tire wear.

It is also worth paying special attention to the body. The fact is that the metal of the body elements is too thin, and even the quality of the paintwork from the Chinese is very low, which leads to the rapid appearance of chips and scratches, which are almost instantly covered with rust. The options listed above are only available for the vehicle with the maximum trim level, as we did on our test drive, except that ESP is standard equipment on all versions. And this is already a great progress. But let's talk about everything in order. The theater starts with the coat rack, and the car starts with the ignition key. I like the weighty Geely Emgrand 7 key-fob - a solid, high-quality thing in which you cannot recognize belonging to a Chinese brand.

Approaching the car, I notice the keyless entry key on the door handle. This function is included in the basic equipment of all versions. But it works a little strange. When leaving the car, you can press the button on the door handle and thus close the locks. But for some reason the doors open only from the button on the key fob.

Before getting into the salon - a few words about the appearance of the car. If you look strictly face-to-face, everything is fine. Modern optics, stylish front bumper with built-in strips of LED running lights - in the rear-view mirror you won't immediately find out what kind of model is behind - either Mercedes-Benz or Nissan, but without frank borrowing. In profile, it is noticeable that the car is far from modern design trends. Perhaps the situation could be corrected by larger wheels, for example, R17, but this would immediately affect the cost.

The interior surprised me. And both from the good and from the bad side. Let's start with the good. The interior has a normal smell - there is not even a trace of the old Chinese "aromas". Finishing materials are surprisingly good. For example, the front panel is made of soft plastic that is pleasant to the hand.

However, there is a caveat - in the basic version, the front panel is ordinary, "solid". I was puzzled by a strange patterned insert made of hard plastic in the center of the front panel. It carries neither functional nor aesthetic load. Later I noticed the same pattern on the rear bumper. Yes, the idea of \u200b\u200bthe Chinese designers turned out to be rather complicated.

But I have no questions about how they painted the interior as a whole - it is quite modern, stylish, without pretentiousness and outright cheapness. We were surprised by the door cards - there are full-fledged handles and soft inserts made of the same leather as on the chairs. The engine starts with a button, and this is also available as standard.

Alas, not without a fly in the ointment. And my biggest complaint is the fit. More precisely, to her inconvenience. Firstly, the steering wheel is only adjustable in tilt, and in a very small range. Secondly, the chair has a limited range of height adjustment.

As a result, only people with a height of no more than 180 cm can get more or less comfortable behind the wheel.With my 186 cm, I was forced to either completely move the driver's seat back, but at the same time barely reach the steering wheel with my hands, or move forward and sit with strongly bent knees. No matter how hard I tried, I could not find any middle position.

What's behind? No special amenities, but no discomfort either. Even when landing "by itself" I had a small margin to the back of the front seat, my head does not rest on the ceiling. There are full-fledged door handles, an ashtray and an armrest with two cup holders.

The trunk is opened either with a key or with a button in the cabin. There are no keys on the cover itself. The trunk itself is roomy and tidy, but you can blame the lack of rigging loops and compartments for small items. A stowaway and a standard set of tools are kept under the floor.

Now about the technique. In the price lists for Geely Emgrand 7, only one engine is available - a 1.8-liter petrol with a capacity of 129 hp. from. It meets Euro-5 standards. Nevertheless, a version with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine is also present on the site of the Belgee plant.

But there are exactly two transmissions - a five-speed manual or a continuously variable variator. The test copy was with him. This is a unit of the Belgian company PUNCH. In addition to the automatic mode, the variator also has a manual one, with six fixed positions of the variator pulleys, which imitate the usual "transmission".

From a place Geely Emgrand 7 starts off smoothly, albeit with a slight delay. If you do not try to pull off the bat, the "motor-variator" link works well. However, under load, the engine makes itself felt with a noticeable noise.

The variator does not particularly try to imitate the operation of a traditional "automatic machine". In the tradition of continuously variable transmissions, it first brings the rpm to the maximum torque zone, and then begins to smoothly change the gear ratio. As a result, the revolutions stand still, and the speed increases.

This effect is especially noticeable during intensive acceleration with the gas pedal in the floor, and the engine noise is already becoming uncomfortable. The motor overstrains, producing a note that is not very pleasant to the ear. We measured the acceleration dynamics, and the best result was 10.4 seconds to “hundreds”. A good indicator.

The suspension has good energy consumption, but it conveys small irregularities to the body in some detail. Roll in corners is too big, but not critical. But the power steering is not set well. The steering wheel was too light in all modes - whether in the parking lot or at high speed. In addition, it makes 3.5 turns from lock to lock, which, by modern standards, is too much.

At high speed, in highway modes, Geely Emgand 7 rides confidently, swaying slightly on the waves of asphalt. The threshold for a comfortable ride is 120 km / h. Further, the noise level in the cabin becomes too high.

To test the operation of the stabilization system, I arranged a standard imitation of the "moose test" - bypassing a sudden obstacle. Well, ESP, as it turned out, performs its function successfully, although it works quite rudely.

You cannot turn it off, and this is perhaps for the best - even with the included electronic "collar" Geely Emgrand 7 has a noticeable tendency to skid. I would like to note that even with very fast taxiing the hydraulic booster has enough performance, the steering wheel does not "shut up".

The final impression of the Geely Emgrand 7 turned out to be contradictory. I was never able to get used to the uncomfortable landing, and it really ruined my life while driving. It would not hurt to work on sound insulation either. The main sources of noise are the engine and wheel arches. And the suspension would have a little more composure, although there are no complaints about its energy intensity.

I will add a high-quality interior to my asset, even in the basic version with a front panel made of hard plastic. I note the presence of ESP in the "standard" and two airbags. By the way, even the car of the previous generation scored 4 stars out of five possible in the toughest EuroNCAP crash test.

With all the advantages and disadvantages, the main issue is the price. The basic version costs 21,627 rubles and in the list of equipment it has air conditioning, keyless entry to the salon and engine start with a button, full power accessories, ESP, two airbags, a light sensor, a stereo system, rear parking sensors.

The most expensive version, as we have on the test drive, costs 24,300 rubles. The car has leather upholstery (leatherette), a rear view camera, cruise control (only for the version with a variator), a multimedia system with a color touch screen and navigation.

In track mode, the only two-pedal version of the X7 with a 2.4 engine producing 148 hp and the Australian six-speed "automatic" DSI (this company has been part of the Geely holding since 2009) is not bad, but annoying in plug mode. Acceleration is viscous and strained, the engine roars as if there is no motor shield at all.

What's the use of a good seat with a distinct lumbar support and tenacious leatherette if the configuration of the steering wheel-chair-pedal triangle is just awful?

The chassis is supposedly modified, but the steering adjustment is still ugly, and the rear suspension (or rather, its semblance) turns frighteningly. On the potholes - bangs and thunder, on the "speed bumps" - vibration like a jackhammer. Yes, my three-year-old Cruze is, against this background, the real pinnacle of the automotive industry. Well at least Emgrand 7 brakes normally, keeps a straight line reliably, and on non-studded winter tires it seems very quiet.

Two and a half years ago, we bought a resource Emgrand EC7 for 542 thousand rubles, but now a "seven" with a 1.8 engine and a five-speed "mechanics" will cost at least 700 thousand, and a variator machine is another hundred thousand more expensive. Basically, this information is enough to dismiss thoughts of buying as a bad dream. There is a five-year warranty with a mileage of up to 150 thousand kilometers, but the maintenance regulations are just as wonderful, the Geely dealer network is small, and besides, almost any "Chinese" is illiquid on the secondary. But in its homeland, Emgrand 7 is the most popular domestic sedan. Poor Chinese ...

And why change something in such a "guise"? I really like it, that is, they don't just look at such a car - they buy it! By the way, the price of the hatchback is only a few thousand more expensive, and the length is 23 cm shorter due to the overhang. The trunk has also significantly decreased, but the car's capabilities for the transportation of oversized cargo have significantly increased. And let, usually a couple of packages from the supermarket are transported in your trunk. In the life of any car owner, there comes a moment when he regrets that he chose a sedan instead of a hatchback.

Externally, Geely Emgrand looks very dignified! It does not have bloody decorations or an abundance of chrome, which is - even gaps and high-quality assembly. There is a great desire to enter the demanding European markets, and not just to get into, but to “bite off” a good piece of the European pie is not just a declaration of intentions. The salon of both the sedan and the hatchback is almost identical. Such an interior could easily be in a car produced in Europe. The Asian origin of the car gives out perhaps the abundance of blue on the dashboard, as well as the traditionally rich equipment. Emgrand really has everything and more: central locking, leather upholstery, power windows, light sensor and climate control. In the engine compartment, the hatchback, like its sedan, has a 4-cylinder engine with a working volume of 1.8 liters. Its limit is 127 horsepower. To get the maximum acceleration dynamics, the car will have to be twisted, since the peak torque is reached at around 4200 rpm. It is achieved quickly enough and feels like a confident pickup, but for some reason I don't want to start in this mode every time. This "somehow" is due to acoustic comfort. Up to 3 thousand rpm, the engine in the cabin is practically inaudible, but the further, the louder its song! On the other hand, this does not prevent the car from showing the declared 185 km / h maximum speed. Moreover, regardless of the switching speed Geely Emgrand remains a very comfortable car.

The suspension is being tested with a bang with very large irregularities. Payback for driving comfort is not quite confident cornering of the car. The very light steering should also be noted here.
