Finest hour. Test drive Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7

The updated SUVs from the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 have become quite good for families, it won't work out right away which one is better, so let's see the characteristics of each.

As already said before, Audi presented its completely updated SUV Q7, did not have to wait long for updates from Volvo, which also introduced the all-new XC90. Both manufacturers have made many changes to their models, but still it's hard to say which one is better, so let's compare the characteristics.

The old Audi Q7 was bulky and could not be called a family SUV. Large on the outside and little space on the inside. In the new, everything is the other way around, there is more space inside. From the outside, the new one has become elegant, and not so bulky. A lot of people say it is much better in interior and interior design than the BMW X5 or similar bulky SUV.

As for the XC90, then previous model, was also bulky in the body. But here new model, with beautiful body features, makes the XC90 more attractive. By safety standards, Volvo has continued to new SUV the safest and intends to continue to hold this position.

The biggest difference between Volvo and Audi starts under the hood. Suffice it to recall the previous Audi Q7, with a 4.2 liter V8 engine. and a capacity of 315 hp. In the new XC90, a two-liter engine with a capacity of 400 hp is hidden under the hood. This is achieved thanks to the turbocharging and reserve on the electric motor.

As for the new Audi Q7, unlike the old one, they hid under the hood diesel engine volume of 3 liters. with a capacity of 218 hp. on conventional engine or 272 hp on a hybrid. As already mentioned, sales of the hybrid Q7 e-tron have started in Germany. In Russia, it is not planned to sell Audi such a complete set, although no one forbids to bring it.

The third row of seats in the Volvo XC90 is made more comfortable, with roomy legroom and good head restraints. The second row of seats can move forward, USB charging ports are also available for them. The Audi Q7 has the same set, but the headroom is slightly less. But still, in front of Swedish competitors, Audi takes over, comfort and control location, a front console divided into several airflow zones, a rich set of buttons and control menus, which will take at least a couple of weeks to figure out. The XC90 has just a few buttons on the front console and a large touchscreen display.

In terms of shape and acceleration, the Audi Q7 is a little faster and more economical, if you are not going to carry a lot of passengers every day or travel a long distance with passengers in the third row of seats, then it may be suitable for a family.

On the other hand, the Audi Q7 is a little uncomfortable, since with the seats open in three rows, there will be no room for things in the trunk, and the third row of seats will be convenient only for children who are not an adult, since the height from the third row of seats to the ceiling is completely small. What can not be said about the Volvo XC90, there is enough roomy trunk, an adult can sit on the third row of seats and there will be enough space. Therefore, we can say that in this comparison Volvo The XC90 is considered the best family SUV.

Video Audi comparisons Q7 and Volvo XC90:

These cars are the flagship of the lineup in their companies. Both are crossovers. Both are available in five- and seven-seater versions. And both are long-awaited: the first generation of Audi The Q7 lasted exactly ten years on the assembly line, and the Volvo XC90 - eleven and a half! But it was still impossible to call these cars rivals: after all, Audi is a full-fledged "premium", while Volvo was previously attributed to this segment only with a stretch. Will the most revolutionary Swedish novelty in recent decades be able to change its status?

In appearance it is unmistakably recognizable Audi brand... But not everyone will be able to immediately determine that this is the new Q7 - the design is too impersonal

In our Audi test acts as a kind of standard. Although not the most massive on the market: sales, for example, of the Mercedes GL-Klasse are almost three times more. However, the Ingolstadt novelty at the start was constrained by quotas, while the sales of the Stuttgart opponent are limited only by the purchasing power. But what do we care about these two authorities if both of them are beginning to be squeezed by Volvo, which played a league below a year ago? This is where the real revolution took place!

It is even more difficult to recognize the novelty from behind: the designers tried so hard to preserve the style of the model that even an experienced motorist might wonder: is it a new Q7, or an old one ...

Compared to Audi, the new Volvo looks much more interesting. In general, I would call the design of the new XC90 an unconditional success of the Swedes. Judge for yourself: the corporate identity here, like that of Audi, is clear. At the same time, even a blonde who is far from technology can recognize in the new XC90 not just the flagship of the model line, but also a novelty of the company, while looking at the Q7 and among men, not everyone will immediately understand that this is a new generation of the model.

The new XC90 is fundamentally different from all previous models of the company. By and large, only the proprietary oblique bar on the radiator grill reminds of belonging to the Swedish brand.

Which one to prefer: a finely cut classics from Germany or a futuristic challenge from the Scandinavians? Both options are good in their own way, but honestly, the Volvo design is still more attractive. Although it blows with Nordic coolness, this northern breeze against the backdrop of yet another German Ordnung is perceived as a breath of fresh air. Audi design categorically dictates the appropriate dress code for all passengers. Does everyone like a strict dress code?

From behind, the Swedish flagship looks a little less futuristic: the chief designer of the company Thomas Ingenlath in general outline retained its characteristic shape rear lights and a large VOLVO lettering on the tailgate

The same trends can be seen in the interior of both crossovers. However, Audi's armchair austerity is no longer perceived as conservatively as its exterior. The front panel is a masterpiece of conciseness and elegance. The central and right side ventilation vents have become almost a single whole, instead of a console, there is only a small "tide" under the climate control unit, and the front panel itself goes over to the door cards like winglets on airplane wings. There is not a single superfluous detail! However, there is no ascetic minimalism either.

The front panel of the old Q7 looked more massive and larger. The new crossover has become more elegant and sophisticated. You sit here - and you seem to be throwing off a dozen years: you want to take off your tie and think not so much about status as about sports, drive, dynamics ...

Perhaps, color design plays an important role in the perception of interiors. And here the light interior of the "German" again contrasts somewhat with the strict appearance of the dark blue body. On the Audi rear sofa, even with the seats of the first and second rows completely shifted towards each other (the rear sofa with separate armchairs here, like the front seats, is adjustable in the longitudinal direction), there is a feeling of freedom and spaciousness, although in fact there is not so much headroom ... The only thing missing is multimedia entertainment for rear passengers or folding tables for a laptop - without them, the Q7 passenger compartment begins to be associated with a bus.

The classic Audi interior is infused with modern technology. Multi-mode color monitor dashboard, the retractable media display and the beautiful multimedia control panel take the car experience to the next level. Moreover, although it is not entirely customary to use electronics, it is intuitively clear

Volvo's dark interior is also not entirely consistent with the exterior of the car. But if on the "German" the strict design of the body breaks the "lightness" of the light interior, then the "Swede" is the opposite: the freshness of the exterior is unexpectedly replaced by a business twilight. Leather and wood trim, complemented by a "diamond" engine start lamb and a "barrel" of choice of driving modes, in combination with more voluminous forms of the front panel, only add a sense of solidity and status.

Leather trim, wood grain inserts and exclusively dark colors- the interior of Volvo, in contrast to the exterior, adjusts to a rather strict mood, while maintaining, however, a freer "dress code" for the driver: it is still permissible to replace a business suit and tie with jeans and a jumper. Is it because the quality of the finish is not perfect? - at least the seams on the leather inserts could have been stitched more accurately ...

The main difference from the "German" is in the multimedia component. If on Audi all electronics looks like a logical evolutionary development of car media systems, then Volvo is closer to the "computer" Tesla electric car. This comparison is prompted by a very similar, vertically oriented "tablet" with a strict menu with numerous subsections. Everything from heated seats to engine and suspension settings is controlled via the touchscreen. Moreover, the menu itself has minimal color embellishments, although the navigation map and images from video cameras external review full color. The driver starts to feel like a system administrator from time to time.

Volvo has fewer interactive dashboard settings than Audi. However, the display on the console is not much inferior in functionality to a tablet computer: it is easy to get lost in the menu in its subsections. And the fact that there is no separate touchpad for control is compensated by a multi-touch display, which the German opponent does not have. The only pity is that there are fingerprints on it.

At the back - similar to the front part, the feeling of business twilight and restrained luxury, which even the panoramic glass roof is not able to lighten up to a "sunny" perception. But there is no trace of associations with "public transport". Space for passengers in the middle row of seats with "oncoming" adjustments of the first two rows is at least - even a child will not sit down. However, the range of longitudinal adjustment of the middle row (as in Audi, here it consists of three separate seats) is larger. As a result, there are no problems with accommodating tall passengers.

Separate second-row seats in both crossovers can be moved forward, but if front seat shifted back, then in Volvo (right) in this situation there is practically no legroom. However, the number and range of adjustments in the XC90 make it possible to comfortably accommodate all passengers. In Audi, an adult passenger will be able to sit in the back with any adjustment. And also in Audi, and in Volvo second a row of seats can be turned into a two-seater "coupe" - by lowering the back of the middle seat

The third row is worth a special mention. The fact is that one is available for both models compared, but in our test, the seven-seater only Volvo. Therefore, we will evaluate it by this parameter, as they say, outside the offset. It's a pity, because the gallery on the XC90 turned out to be more convenient than expected. Of course, it is better not to go on a long journey for adult passengers. However, there is no obvious discomfort or embarrassment either. When unfolded, the rear seats are raised above the trunk floor, the middle row is slightly shifted forward, and voila - the knees fit and do not lift up to the ears. The embossing on the ceiling leaves a headroom. And from the convenience not only armrests and cup holders, but even individual ventilation deflectors and a ceiling light!

Behind the wheel, an untrained person can experience a real culture shock. It's all about the settings of the driver's seats. At first, we were content with standard ones - in length, height and backrest angle. Even that was enough to get a comfortable fit. Then it was time to use heating or ventilation. The third stage in comprehending the mystery of the perfect fit will be the mastery of the "joystick" of additional adjustments.

The main feature of the driver's seat adjustment is a round “joystick” on the sidewall of the base. It can be used to adjust not only the depth of the lumbar support or the length of the seat cushion, but also the lateral support and the overall "grip" of the seats. With such a wide range of options, it is almost impossible to determine which of the chairs is more comfortable.

And it's hard to find fault with other aspects of ergonomics. The differences are rather at the level of nuances. So, in Audi, as they say, everything is in its place and is almost blind. And only the visibility let us down: with such narrow struts, the wide rear sides of the exterior mirror housings were unpleasantly surprised (in fact, they hide the entire sector between the body pillar and the mirror, making the small triangular windows in the doors useless), and there was no rear-view camera in our configuration. Well at least the "parktronic" works flawlessly: parking "by ear" allows you to literally close your eyes to the lack of cameras. Volvo is better in this respect: it is only slightly inferior to Audi in the "direct" view, but "video surveillance" allows you to control the entire perimeter.

Engines

The biggest difference between our two crossovers is the engines. Volvo has a four-cylinder engine under the hood with a volume of only two liters. In fact, two packs of juice, each of which is "charged" for 160 "horses". Against this background, the degree of forcing Audi is much more modest: "only" 111 horses per liter. But the liters themselves are half as much: exactly three. Accordingly, the power of the "German" is 333 hp. against 320 for the "Swede".

The dense layout of the engine compartment in both crossovers leaves no doubt about maintainability: only service centers. The fact that Volvo has an in-line "four" is located transversely does not give any advantages: the free space is occupied by numerous mounted units

Driving onto the road, you expect powerful acceleration and soft gait from Audi. And, in principle, expectations are justified: acceleration is energetic and smooth at the same time, and the initial stiffness is easily "treated" by transferring the air suspension to Auto or Comfort mode. However, throttle responses in this case become a little damped, if not lazy. Activating Efficiency or Dynamic modes improves acceleration, but expectedly impairs ride comfort. The driver is fine, but the passengers are not. The compromise is Individual mode, in which the engine can be tuned to dynamic mode and the suspension to be comfortable. Or vice versa - as you like it more.

The running gear games are interesting. However, for most drivers, the most versatile Auto mode is fine.

When it comes to handling, Audi once again deserves benchmarking. I will not even say which of the cars available on the Russian market has the same flawless interaction with the driver. Any maneuver is easy and natural. The asphalt, even broken, does not strain either the hands or the driver's vestibular apparatus at all. Roll in corners ... They rather warn that no setting can deceive the laws of physics. But even in emergency situation The Q7 does not make "sudden movements" that intimidate the inexperienced driver and force the electronic safety systems to pass.

The Q7 is, first and foremost, an excellent balance of road performance and comfort. In any of the individual parameters, you can find a car with a slightly the best characteristics... But none of them will have such a harmonious combination.

Volvo after Audi is perceived differently. And it's not just the tire difference (our Q7 wore Continental ContiVikingContact 6 friction tires, while the XC90 had studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 SUVs). At the end of the test, I deliberately rode a similar Volvo with Velcro for a while and found that the difference in handling only increased. The "Swede" does not react so clearly to the actions of the steering wheel, the smoothness of the ride, even in the most comfortable mode, is still a little worse, and the noise level is slightly higher. However, these nuances cannot be considered disadvantages: for the debutant of the segment premium crossovers top-level driving performance XC90s are extremely high. Just against the background of Q7, you can clearly see what is still missing for the optimum: as our editor-in-chief Dima Krotov said, the degree of roasting is not yet the same ...

The main disappointment with Volvo is its lack of "noble" habits. This annoying sensation begins with the sound of a two-liter "four", continues in the not-so-ideal operation of an eight-speed "automatic machine" and reaches its peak in the noise of the tires.

However, a strange thing: for some reason, the imperfection of Volvo does not repulse. On the contrary, it turns the driver on! Only two liters in the engine? But this does not fundamentally affect the intensity of acceleration (except that the "automatic" is constantly late with the change of gears). The suspension is not delicate enough to cope with the joints of overpasses or "speed bumps" in interdistrict passages? But the feeling of sportiness is sharper and there is definitely no detachment from the road.

The XC90 even has the makings of self-management: in the presence of clearly visible markings and the absence of heavy traffic on the highway, the crossover is able to independently control the movement in the lane. But in turns, "autopilot" does not work

Having rolled on the asphalt, we move down onto a country road. Of course, on tires designed for fast movement on highways (you must admit that the owners of both models are unlikely to put "toothy" mud Boggers or Goodrichs on their cars), you won't go far off-road. However, numerous electronic systems, coupled with an air suspension that increases the ground clearance, give hope to get stuck to go further than expected.

The ranges of the clearance change for our rivals differ: ground clearance Audi ranges from 210 to 245 mm, while Volvo's ranges from 237 to 267 mm. If in profile Audi looks like a big station wagon, then Volvo looks closer to classic SUVs. Moreover, the Swedish car looks organically at any level of air suspension, while the "German" in the lower position seems a little flat on the road, and in the upper position - as if standing on tiptoe

We raise the bodies to the highest positions and take turns testing our experimental subjects on typical urban obstacles: high curb, roadside ditch, beach sand ... It is a pity that at the time of the test in Moscow it was not just snowdrifts, there was not even such familiar slush. Therefore, overcoming winter obstacles was left behind the scenes. As for the rest of the obstacles, none of them caused any difficulties. Is that Volvo in front of the curb requires more accuracy because of the additional optics located low in the front bumper.

All-wheel drive in both Audi and Volvo is more suitable for more confident driving on the roads: there is no demultiplier, no locks - only their electronic imitations. They even saved when hanging the wheels

Both crossovers showed roughly equal capabilities. The difference is in the nuances: the Audi center coupling takes a little longer to connect rear axle, and Volvo electronics simulate cross-wheel locks a little worse. And keep in mind that on both vehicles, the towing eyes are removable, which means they are not designed for serious rescue operations.

So has the new XC90 been able to match the Q7? To be honest, not really. More precisely, he stood in a row, but the level of feeling of the quality of the car is still not so high. The "Swede" does not yet have the precision and attention to detail characteristic of the German opponent. Audi conquers by the fact that any function, any option, if necessary, can be activated when required. And in motion you will think about anything, just not about what is happening under the wheels.

Volvo is completely devoid of the "fat" of the engine displacement and does not try to completely isolate the driver and passengers from the outside world. The XC90 is more willing to "inform" the riders about the condition of the asphalt under the wheels, and it is removed from the worldly bustle not so much by noise isolation as by more numerous electronic systems safety and driving assistance. And it’s not to say that they greatly interfere with unity with the car - rather, the “Swede” himself cannot always “explain” with the driver. It lacks clarity of steering and synchronization in the operation of the engine and the "automatic". Anyone else, but I got the impression that Volvo is an electronic gadget on wheels, many of which can be fixed by a simple firmware update.

I'm driving a Volvo XC90, editor-in-chief (we published his video version of this test separately) - on an Audi Q7. Both cars - with the most powerful engines in the range so far and air suspension. A high-speed section with excellent asphalt, then turning loops of variable radius, then a section of broken road. One circle, the second. We change cars and repeat the route in the same modes. When we finally stop, I already lost count of castling, but we have a common opinion about cars. They evoke polar emotions: Audi - a smile and joy, and Volvo - annoyance. Why?

The XC90 crossover of the first generation was produced for 13 years - one and a half times longer than the term adopted in the industry. That is, the Swedes had more than enough time to invent and develop the "second" XC90. At first it seems that we have not waited in vain. How fresh the new XC90 looked in the first photos! And live it is even more beautiful. Particularly effective is the crossover with optional metal bumper trims, protruding footrests and arch extensions. And the rapper Xzibit from the famous TV program "Wheelbarrow for pumping" would probably have coveted the polished 21-inch wheels.

Almost five meters long, almost three meters of wheelbase, but in front of the XC90, despite the physical space, there is a feeling of compression. It is partly black trim, but mostly puffy door panels, a low top edge of the windshield, thick A-pillars and a high sill line, probably made as such for the sake of the record rating in the EuroNCAP crash tests. In the second row, it is emotionally freer: parts of the seat can be moved back and forth, the backrest can be tilted - there is a reserve both in the legs and above the head. The central part of the sofa, according to the Volvian tradition, turns into Baby chair(in the package of options for 29,900 rubles), however, its retainer remains in the hand every time.

The 12.3-inch graphical dashboard looks like a toy and fades in sunny weather. Attack multimedia system Sensus is a soiled glossy screen. Swedish caring is hidden in glove box soft cloth to wipe it.

Align the seams on the upholstery and reduce the number of wrinkles on it, but otherwise the trim of the XC90 is impressive. Leather on seats, doors and dashboard, real aluminum. The engine start knob, as well as the rotating wheel for selecting the driving modes, resembles a jewel, the speakers of the Bowers & Wilkins audio system are stylishly inscribed in the door panels, the efforts on all levers-buttons are calibrated. The equipment is unprecedented for a model from Gothenburg. Now Volvo also has a projection of the instrument readings on windshield, and the length of the cushion and the "embrace" of the side bolsters of the back of the driver's seat are electrically adjustable.

Before the autumn leapfrog with prices, each of these four cost from five to five and a half million rubles. All of them are potentially seven-seater, all have gasoline engines ranging from 306 to 333 horsepower. And the main intrigue is this: will the latest Audi Q7 3.0 TFSI (333 hp) and Volvo XC90 T6 (320 hp) surpass the old-timers of the full-size crossover segment, which will be the proven BMW X5 xDrive35i (306 hp) .) and Mercedes-Benz GL 400 (333 hp)?

By the way, why is GL, and not his "younger" brother GLE, exhilarated by res-tiling? Because the GLE cannot have seven seats - and it has not yet reached the Russian press park.

Therefore, we took GL, which after the update will carry the proud GLS index (the letter S - from the S-class). Flagship! These are not elegant Q7 or XC90, friendly and peaceful in a European way. Even BMW - and that now, in an intellectual way, gravitates towards moral pacifism, although the branded "nostrils" and Bavarian "angel eyes" still cause the desire to step aside. And only Mercedes is brutal and unceremonious: scat, small fry!

Audi Q7 is the new Everest in the auto industry: more obedient than BMW and more comfortable than Mercedes

0 / 0

Imperial manners are felt in the Mercedes interior, solid and solid, like a mausoleum. Old-fashioned rows of buttons and a tiny multimedia display by modern standards only add to this feeling. But how convenient everything is here! In addition to the hyperfunctional steering column lever (tradition!) And standard wide seats (chic multicontour - for an additional charge).

Avant-garde with a human face: Audi's technocratic interior is full of quality and does not require getting used to. For the rapid-fire and quick-witted "automatic" ZF, Audi made as many as five modes, including manual. Although one thing is enough - the adaptive Auto program

BMW is an enveloping modernist style that is doubly enjoyable thanks to the comfortable optional seats. Branded eccentricities with paddle shifters are also in the X5. But you find a common language with a pair of non-fixed BMW levers much faster than with a Mercedes one-armed bandit.

Four-zone climate control for Audi, BMW and Volvo is available as an option for 40-60 thousand rubles

And techno fans will love Audi. Ease of style, clarity of lines. Every detail, be it a small button or a huge touchpad, is in its place. And the idyll is complemented by seats with massage, ventilation and countless adjustments (270 thousand rubles). Moreover, Audi has the lowest, in fact, passenger, landing. But the optional Audi virtual cockpit is vertical - and even the motley virtual cockpit appears to be tilted backwards.

Seven Audi presets can be selected either via the menu or directly using the drive select hot arrows. Dynamic, Comfort and Efficiency in name and in essence correspond to sports, comfort and eco modes in BMW and Volvo

Beautiful pictures with roll angles (the same can be shown by BMW with a Mercedes) and the ability to soar over a quarter-meter track are the advantages of the lift / offroad mode (it is active up to 35 km / h). But at the same time, the Audi Q7, like Volvo, turns into a stool: the suspension stops rebounding. For driving on dirt roads, auto is better, where there is a smooth ride and a 20-centimeter ground clearance

0 / 0

The Volvo seat is set five centimeters higher than the Audi. And what a chair it is! Deep, multicontour - no less comfortable than in Audi and BMW. Here you want to admire the exquisite lines of the door upholstery and the exhibits of the jewelry exhibition on the central tunnel, and then plunge headlong into the colorful, but complex world of the built-in "tablet". Volvo will turn anyone into an introvert!

Audi Q7 is German car in a new body and improved technologies.
