But today, in the class of premium SUVs, these features are perceived rather as a pleasant bonus, additional insurancethat gives confidence in any situation. In terms of their size and level of equipment, luxury SUVs are close to the executive sedans and even bypassed them in a number of parameters. So the wits quite aptly dubbed this car “the deputy of the G8 for the off-road part”.

Although it should be noted that the arsenal that helps to overcome the “off-road”, “Q7” is not very rich - a constant four-wheel drive and electronic slippery descent assist. The all-terrain potential can be slightly increased if you order a car with air suspension, which makes it possible to vary the ground clearance in the range from 16 to 24 cm, but still it will not be able to play the role of a real all-terrain vehicle. There is no demultiplier, no lockable cross-axle differentials ...

- “Audi Q7” does not have any downshifting or cross-axle differential locks, but it can easily cope with light off-roading. The increased cross-country ability is provided by an effective electronic imitation of locks, a Torsen limited-slip center differential and a hill descent assistance system.

With a rather large size and an extended wheelbase, the geometric cross-country ability of the car is by no means bad due to the adjustable air suspension (option) and short overhangs.

The basic design is not luxurious. It includes only what excludes bad manners: airbags, climate control and heated seats, bi-xenon, parking sensors and an audio system. There are many options for ordering: air suspension, panoramic roof, leather interior with ventilated seats, navigation display with a rear view camera ...

"Gelendvagen" acquired its current external and internal appearance in 1990, when Mercedes-Benz put on the conveyor a utilitarian model with an internal index "463", and on its basis soon began to produce civilian well-equipped and finished cars. Prior to this, the G-Class was not even considered point-blank as a prestigious premium vehicle - it had neither ABS, nor advanced powerful motors in combination with an automatic transmission, not even a permanent all-wheel drive system - a rear one with a rigid front connection was used. But over the years, a real symbol of masculinity and prosperity has matured from a simple, efficient and ultra-durable car.

Appearance is, perhaps, the main value of Gelendvagen. The angularly brutal proportions of the car have not changed over the years. But "facelift" is done to him all the time, minor updates appear almost every year.

The second most important quality is the overclocking dynamics. Not many SUVs, even with a V8 under the hood, fit within the standard of six seconds to a hundred, and the “G 500” almost succeeds - 6.1 seconds! A sports car dug, coupled with precise and grippy brakes, help to easily maneuver in traffic and overtake.

And only in the last place, buyers take into account that the Gelendvagen is the most ferocious and powerful all-terrain vehicle in our review. More precisely, it may be accepted, but purely speculative. Somewhere in the mud or as a tractor-tug, this expensive car is unlikely to be seen anywhere.

The turbo diesel on the “G 350 CDI” is the most modest in the review (224 hp), nevertheless the engine is combined with a seven-speed automatic transmission “7G-Tronic”, and the modification has an exhaustive off-road arsenal. The most dynamic version is the “G 55 AMG Kompressor” with a supercharged petrol V8. The 388-horsepower “G 500” can be seen as a sweet spot.

All members of the G-Class are unique in that they use rigid axles in combination with three forced-locking differentials and electronic traction control system “4ETS”.

The front and rear suspensions are dependent, but the kinematics, axle travel, the characteristics of the springs and shock absorbers are so calibrated that on the asphalt the car does not behave like an army utility truck. At the same time, the G-class is practically invulnerable off-road.

Basic equipment: ABS and stabilization system, climate control, heated front seats, xenon adaptive headlights... The standard equipment of gasoline models also includes a leather interior and navigation system... The AMG version is equipped with proprietary five-spoke wheels with 275/55 R19 tires, fender extensions, twin side tailpipes and a chrome grille. The protection system includes front airbags and inflatable window shades.

The choice of options is very wide - from ventilation of the seats and special illumination, to the sunroof and individual "Designo" trim. There are also special versions of the car. The “G Guard” is armored in B6 or B7 class, while the “G Professional” features an extended wheelbase, simplified trim and a derated diesel engine.

This SUV has been produced for many years at a plant in Austria. Sold by advance orders only. Dealers are currently accepting applications for vehicles delivered between October and December.

"Mercedes-Benz GL-class"

In THIS MODEL, before its official release, many saw the successor to Gelendvagen, but in Mercedes-Benz they reasoned differently. The uncompromising all-terrain vehicle has already been made. What is needed now is a large, frameless SUV with uncompromising levels of comfort. And it is from this angle that we advise you to look at the GL-class - this is, without a doubt, the quietest and smoothest car in motion, and not only in this review, but possibly in general. Stuttgardts have a wealth of experience in such matters - executive “S” and luxury “Maybach” are not in vain considered standards of comfort. So, some developments from the mentioned models were transferred to “GL”: the use of stretchers for suspensions, pneumatic elements, adjustable damping ... a suit ”of a classic Mercedes cut and, of course, with a corporate star.

The “GL” is so spacious that it can be classified as a full-fledged seven-seater car. Of course, access to the third row is not the easiest due to the fact that there are five doors, but people of average height are placed in the third row without harassment. The optional third row of seats folds down electrically - with one press, and the seats retract flush with the floor, freeing up space for luggage.

GL's primary market is the United States. It is also produced there. However, this car cannot be said to cater to American tastes. And by the way, as an all-terrain vehicle, it is very good, but only in the version that is officially supplied to Russia. Cars imported from overseas by private owners, as a rule, have a lightweight transmission.

The “GL” has only one box - the proprietary “automatic” “7G-Tronic”. The 5.5-liter petrol V8 is similar to that found in the G-Class. But the 3.5-liter turbodiesel is slightly different thanks to the “BlueEFFICIENCY” technology - it has less consumption and less torque. An intermediate option in terms of power is the GL 450 4Matic modification with a reliable 340-horsepower petrol V8.

In the “4x4” system, the “GL” uses Mercedes' permanent all-wheel drive “4Matic” in combination with the electronic traction control system “4ETS”. There is a rear differential lock.

- “GL” with conventional suspension does not exist - all SUVs use the “AirMatic” pneumatic system with ADS adaptive damping. This model in the "base" is equipped richer than many of its competitors from Germany. The equipment of the "Special Series" certainly includes: separate climate control, heated front and rear seats, artificial leather upholstery, adaptive bi-xenon; and the petrol versions have a multimedia complex with navigation. “GL 500” is offered at all in an almost complete package: with a rear-view camera, additional side airbags for the second row, an autonomous heating system, four-zone climate control and a TV tuner with monitors in the rear.

Although the "Special Series" is considered to be a formally fixed version, a variety of options are available for the younger modifications, including a sunroof, seat ventilation, and a third row of seats.

"Porsche Cayenne"

INTO Porsche's tradition of giving each developed vehicle an internal numeric index in addition to its name, the first ever Cayenne SUV in the history of the German brand is “Type 955”. Its thoroughly updated version in 2007 - “type 957”. And a completely new one, released last year, is “type 958”.

It is based on the same common platform developed jointly by Audi / VW and Porsche. However, the second generation Cayenne is very different from its predecessor in everything, even in weight. If the “955” and “957” had both a lowered row and a whole arsenal of locks in the transmission, and therefore were considered excellent all-terrain vehicles, then in the new model there are fewer off-road facilities: electronic imitations of locks and an optional adjustable air suspension. Even in the all-wheel drive system, Stuttgardt engineers abandoned the heavy mechanical center differential in favor of a compact multi-plate clutch. As practice has shown, very few people need the “Cayenne” off-road vehicle. A Porsche customer, even when choosing a multifunctional station wagon, wants to see it as a Porsche - a very fast and instantly recognizable vehicle. The “Cayenne” drive types differ. On the diesel and hybrid versions, a differential with electronic locking and constant torque distribution is used, and on gasoline models, a multi-plate clutch is used, which can quickly connect the front axle if there is an excess of traction on the rear axles. As such, there is no demultiplier, but there is an imitation of the lowered row (the “automatic” is simply fixed in the first and very short gear). For a surcharge, gasoline models are also equipped with a lockable rear differential.

The standard option is a spring suspension, which is largely identical passenger cars (double wishbone front and multi-link rear). The adjustable air suspension (optional) is addressed to those who want more ride comfort on rough roads and better off-road capability.

The basic equipment is very modest. When choosing a gasoline and hybrid "Eski" you will no longer have to pay extra for the adaptive bi-xenon. The flagship model “Turbo” is equipped with only air suspension, has an interior made of fine genuine leather with heated rear seats, parking sensors, a camera, navigation and a multimedia system.

The list of options for the Cayenne was clearly drawn up on the "every whim" principle. The interior decoration section is especially extensive. You can even cover the interior rearview mirror with expensive leather.

And forty-one years ago, when the first model debuted, the British were not chasing glamor and just wanted to make a large station wagon, saturated with new technical gadgets - a kind of advanced and multifunctional car, focused more on relaxation than on hard everyday work.

The current model formally belongs to the third generation. Frameless monocoque body, independent adjustable air suspension, permanent all-wheel drive with electronic control, “Terrain Response” system for adapting the car to different road and off-road conditions - these are its main features. But even within a single generation, British engineers never stop developing the car. This year's Range Rover is so different from the 2002 “Phase 1” models that they can be viewed as different cars altogether.

The differences are only in the details. In “Vogue” (diesel models only), “Oxford” and “Belgravia” leather is used. In Westminster - Semi-Aniline.
