The cardan transmission consists of intermediate (pos. 7.8), front 4 and rear 10 driveshafts.

The intermediate shaft design uses an elastic coupling and a constant velocity joint. The elastic coupling reduces noise and vibration of the shaft and transfer case. The sleeve is made of six rubber elements 37, between which there are metal liners 35, to which the rubber elements are vulcanized. The liners have holes for bolts 33 connecting the elastic coupling with the gearbox output shaft flange and with the flange 34 of the elastic coupling. Washers 36 are located under the nuts of the fastening bolts for balancing the intermediate propeller shaft. The elastic coupling is centered on the flanges by six protrusions of the liners 35, of which three go into the grooves of the gearbox output shaft flange, and the rest into the grooves of the flange 34 of the elastic coupling.

The alignment of the gearbox output shaft and the intermediate propeller shaft is ensured by a centering ring 38 pressed onto the end of the gearbox output shaft and by a centering sleeve pressed into the flange 34.

The hinge of equal angular velocities of the intermediate shaft consists of a cage mounted on the slots of the flange 34 of the elastic coupling, a separator 32, in the holes of which six balls are located, and a housing 28, inside which six radial grooves are machined. The balls 29, located in the grooves of the body and the holder, pivotally connect them to each other. Hinge cavity filled with grease and sealed rubber cover 30, which, together with the protective casing 31, is fastened with a clamp 39 to the hinge body, and the arc with its end to the shank of the flange 34. From the end, the hinge cavity is closed with a plug 40.

The elastic coupling consists of six steel liners connected by rubber bridges. Due to its elasticity, the clutch dampens jerks in the vehicle's transmission. The elastic coupling is attached to the output shaft flange with three bolts passed through the holes in the bushings. The other three holes are used to fasten the coupling to the flange on the intermediate shaft. Balancing washers are located under the bolt nuts. When disassembling, we mark their location, so that later they can be installed in their original places. In order not to disturb the balance, we note the relative position of other parts of the intermediate shaft. A constant velocity hinge is put on the spline end of the flange of the elastic coupling. Its structure is similar to the external drive joint. front wheel... The hinge is secured against displacement by a retaining ring located in the groove on the flange shaft. The hinge is protected from dirt by a rubber bellows cover and a plastic plug in the rear end of the hinge housing. The cover is fixed on the flange shaft and the hinge body with special clamps with locks. There is a protective plastic cover under the large clamp (on the hinge body).

On the first VAZ-2121 models, a cross was installed instead of a hinge of equal angular velocities.

Removing the intermediate shaft

Remove the transfer case assembly with the intermediate shaft (see Removing the transfer case).

1. Keeping the shaft from turning with a screwdriver, with a key "13" unscrew the four nuts securing the intermediate shaft to the transfer case flange.

2. Remove intermediate shaft... Install the intermediate shaft on the transfer case in reverse order.
