Most useful tools for the inexperienced auto mechanic. Car Service Hand Tool Get the most effort out of a tight spot

A hand tool is used to tighten the fasteners (bolts, nuts and screws). Below is a list of hand tools that no auto mechanic can do without. The specialized tool is not included in this list.

Did you have to borrow some instrument several times? So you need to buy it!

Most auto mechanics will not refuse their young colleague a request to sometimes borrow one or another tool. But if you need a tool several times already, buy it as soon as possible. Also, when returning a borrowed instrument, make sure it is clean and return it to the person from whom you borrowed it. By doing this, you will build the confidence of your colleagues.

Why has Philips become the common name for one type of screwdriver?

In 1936, inventor Henry M. Phillips patented the Phillips head screw. The Phillips slot on the head of this screw does not reach its edge, so the tip of the screwdriver is always fixed in the center of the screw head.

Figure: Safety glasses are the most essential accessory for any tool kit

Figure: Combination wrench. Both wrench heads are sized for the same bolt head size. Please note that the open end is angled towards the key handle to make it easier to work in tight spaces

Figure: Three open-end wrenches of different qualities. The cheapest (left) is made of flimsy steel, thicker and rougher than a standard key (center). Shown on the right is a professional quality key (and the corresponding price)

Do not use such a tool

A young mechanic who went to work in a workshop, arriving at work on the first day, put his toolbox on the workbench. Another mechanic, seeing that it contained several adjustable wrenches along with a full set of quality tools, said: "Take this away from the eyes of the authorities." The movable jaws of an adjustable wrench often slide over the surface of the head of a bolt or nut, rounding off sharp edges, making it much more difficult to unwind such a damaged fastener.

Figure: A split-head box wrench with a hexagonal mouth. Also known under the names "water wrench", "locksmith wrench" or "pipe wrench". The jaw of this wrench covers most of the faces of the hexagonal profile of pipeline fittings and allows you to grip the part as tightly as possible without damaging it

Figure: Ring-head box spanner. Recommended for loosening and tightening bolts and nuts where a socket wrench cannot be used. The heads on both sides of the key are numbered differently. Such a wrench is preferable to an open-end wrench because it covers the bolt head around the perimeter, and not only on both sides, like an open-end wrench

Figure: The open-end wrench is a general purpose tool. The heads on both sides of the key have a different seating size (number). An open-end wrench should not be used to tighten "all the way" or to loosen a heavily tightened threaded connection due to the danger of it being ripped off the head of the bolt or nut

Figure: Flat blade screwdrivers (left) vary in length and blade thickness. The thickness of the tip should correspond to the width of the slot on the screw head. Phillips screwdrivers (right) differ in length and size of the "patch" at the tip of the tip. The smallest "patch" of the Philips screwdriver # 1, the Philips screwdriver # 2 (shown in the photo) - the most common - has a larger one. The blunt tip of the Philips # 3 screwdriver is designed to handle the largest screws

Reception using grinding paste

Apply a small amount of grinding paste to the head of the bolt or screw. It "grabs" the tip of a screwdriver or other tool, not allowing it to "break" from the fastener. You can buy this paste in tubes at any auto parts store.

Figure: A variety of ticks. Combination pliers (far left) are often confused with water crimping pliers (second from left)

Figure: Ball hammers (top) commercially available vary in head weight (usually given in ounces). Below is a hammer with a soft (plastic) striker. The hammer head must always be softer (have a higher ductility) than the material being processed. To avoid damage when machining cast iron or steel engine parts, insert a block of wood or similar material between them and the steel-headed hammer

Figure: Different types of socket wrench drives

Figure: Various options for socket extensions (extensions). The universal swivel extension, shown in the center (bottom), is convenient for working in tight spaces

Figure: Socket heads - dodecahedral, hexagonal and octagonal. It is better to use hex heads, as they cover all six facets of the head of a standard bolt or nut, allowing you to apply more force without breaking the faces of the head

Figure: The hexagonal socket rests on all faces of the bolt or nut head. The twelve-sided head, if excessive force is applied, can "rip" the edges of the bolt or nut head

Figure: Sockets: standard twelve-sided short (left), articulated (center) and elongated (right). The last two are hex

Figure: Standard files. Never use a file without a handle

Figure: A mechanical collet (top) and a telescopic probe with a magnet at the end (bottom) are indispensable tools when you need to reach a small part that has fallen into a place where fingers cannot be reached

Figure: Stethoscope - with its help the mechanic "listens" to the engine, looking for a place from which a suspicious noise is coming

Figure: A typical sharpening machine. Pay attention to the installed on it protective shield... But while the screen does provide some eye protection, be sure to use protective goggles when working on this or any other machine.

Figure: Hacksaw. The teeth of the hacksaw blade should be oriented away from the saw handle. The thinner the material to be cut, the smaller the teeth of the hacksaw blade should be.

Figure: Drill (top) with spiral flutes (flutes) and reamer (bottom) with straight cutting edges

Figure: Drill cutting edge

Figure: Various punches (left) and chisel (right)

Figure: The striker of this chisel is riveted, and this is dangerous (a). If you hit such a chisel with a hammer, sharp pieces of metal can break off and injure you. When you find a tool with a riveted face, grind off the riveted part as shown in this photo. This will avoid the risk of injury (b)

Figure: Tapping with a hand die

Figure: Taps - roughing and finishing. Finishing taps are commonly used to clean or update existing threads in parts.

Figure: Dies are used to cut external threads on cylindrical rods, and taps are used to cut internal threads in holes

Figure: Installing the tap into the drilled hole. To obtain the required clearance in the thread, the hole diameter must exactly match the size of the tap. A drill of the corresponding diameter is called a threaded drill

Figure: An inexpensive mesh tray is convenient for organizing small parts

Figure: A good portable fluorescent lamp is essential for work. A fluorescent lamp does not heat up as much as an incandescent lamp, and will not cause a fire if accidentally splashed with gasoline, unlike the unprotected incandescent lamps used in some emergency lights

Figure: For a start, it is enough to have a set of only the most necessary tools. Experienced, highly trained auto mechanics spend thousands of dollars annually buying tools, such as the one assembled in this large (and expensive) toolbox.

Depending on the method of execution, washing can be done manually, mechanically and in combination. Hand washing is carried out from a hose with a hose or a brush. When cleaning with a medium jet or high pressure the hose must have a washing gun that allows you to adjust the spray pattern. For washing the lower, more contaminated parts of the car, a directed, dagger jet is used; for washing the upper parts, a fan, cone-shaped jet is used.

For mechanized washing, special washing installations are used, which, depending on the control method, can be automatic or with a manual drive.

Combined car wash is used when one part of the car is washed manually, and the other - mechanized.

For washing cars, washing installations are used, which can be stationary jet-brush with a carriage moving around the car, and with the movement of the car, and stationary brushless with a carriage moving around the car, and with the movement of the car.

Stationary jet-brush installations are equipped with brushes with an oscillating suspension system. Most common for washing passenger cars received mobile washing installations. They represent a U-shaped arch moving with the help of an electric drive along the rails laid on the washing track. Two vertical and one horizontal rotary brushes with electric drives, brushes for washing wheel disks and a device for drying (blowing off) the car after washing are mounted on the portal. The brushes are wetted through a pipe system with nozzles. Most washers have an additional spray arch for pre-wetting and rinsing. The washing sequence is controlled by a computer.

The technological process with the use of a modern washing plant consists of the following operations: general car wash with high pressure water; spraying detergent foam with chemical elements to soften oil and fat deposits; two-pass washing with floating brushes, bending around the contours of the car, with simultaneous washing of the car bottom; spraying wax (polishes); two-pass forced drying.

The disadvantage of brush washers is damage to the coating of the surface of the car as a result of exposure to brushes. The installation brushes must be periodically cleaned of accumulated dirt, which is not always done. To avoid surface damage on some models of washing installations, rag strips are used in brushes instead of pile.

The productivity of brush installations is from 30 to 40 vehicles per hour at an operating pressure of 0.4-0.6 MPa. One car wash consumes up to 900 liters of water.

Stationary brushless washers are used to wash the body and lower part of the car. They do not damage antennas or other exterior equipment of the vehicle, and they do not scratch paintwork... The productivity of the installations is from 20 to 30 vehicles per hour at an operating pressure of 0.8-1.2 MPa. Water consumption for washing one car is 1200-1800 liters.

In connection with the increased requirements of car owners for the quality of washing, as well as the high cost of brush washing plants, small-sized mobile high-pressure washers are increasingly used. They can be driven by a pump, either from an electric motor or from a motor internal combustion... Washing is carried out with hot or cold water at a pressure of 3-15 MPa.

At present, given the high cost of water, washing plants are equipped with recycling water supply systems, and biological water purification systems are also used.

To remove moisture from a car after washing, special installations are used that remove moisture using air heated to 40-50 ° at a pressure of 0.2-0.4 MPa, infrared rays, etc. Moisture is removed from the engine and ignition system devices after washing compressed air using a special pistol at a pressure of 1 MPa. The outer surfaces of the cab, hood, cladding, headlights, fenders, sidelights are wiped with a cleaning material, and the polished surface of the body is wiped with a bike or suede.

Portable and mobile vacuum cleaners are used to clean the car interior.

Lifting and transport equipment

In order to have convenient access to all the components and assemblies of the car, various lifts are widely used at car service enterprises. They can be equipped with electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic drives.

For the maintenance and repair of passenger cars, two-post, four-post, scissor and plunger lifts, as well as tippers are used. When servicing a car on inspection ditches, ditch lifts can be used.

Most often, floor two-post electromechanical lifts with a lifting capacity of 2-3 tons are used. Such a lift consists of two box-shaped racks and a crossbeam. Each rack has a lead screw, along which the lifting nut moves. Attached to the nut is a carriage with pivotally mounted sliding arms. The lifting lead screws are driven by an electric motor through a gearbox. Rotation to the other propeller is transmitted by a chain drive installed inside the cross member.

The lift is controlled by a push-button switch. The lifting height is 1.8-2.0 m, the lifting time is 50-60 s. In the extreme upper and lower positions, the carriage is stopped by the limit switch of the electric motor. The lift is installed without a special foundation on a flat surface and is fixed to the floor with anchor bolts.

Dumpers are used when washing the bottom of a car before maintenance or repair, before welding, with anti-corrosion coatings. Good access to the underbody and axles of the vehicle is preserved even in the case of using single-column hydraulic lifts. The vehicle can be raised to a low height using a hydraulic, pneumohydraulic or pneumatic jack.

Inside the car service enterprise, the car is lifted and its units moved using electric hoists, hoists, mobile cranes, cargo trolleys, crane beams and other equipment.

Other types of equipment

For production technical inspections and car repair, diagnostic tools are used to detect defects without disassembling the car. The technical condition of units, assemblies and devices of the vehicle is established according to diagnostic parameters, individual values \u200b\u200bof which indicate a violation of the operating mode, adjustments, interfacing of parts of devices and mechanisms. Diagnostics is one of the technological elements of technical inspection.

The equipment used for diagnostics can be portable, stationary and mobile. Stationary equipment includes various designs and types of stands where the condition is checked brake system, suspension, traction, wheel alignment angles, wheel balancing, etc. The mobile equipment includes a set of special devices with the help of which they diagnose systems and engine mechanisms in need of repair, for example, motor testers, as well as devices for determining the composition of exhaust gases, devices for checking headlights, dimensions and turns, stands for balancing wheels without removing them from car.

There are many small-sized devices for testing the performance of units, components and systems of a car, for example, scanners, compressors and others, which are used as portable equipment.

In order to make it easier to determine the type and severity of faults and to better maintain the car, the following devices are used in small car repair shops.

Ohmmeter, used to test the resistance of the ignition coil, as well as to test the elements of the electronic injection system.

Voltmeter, used to check the condition of the breaker contacts, check the electrical network, the condition of the battery and the voltage regulator.

Ammeter, used to check the electronic ignition system, as well as the battery charge.

Hydrometerused to check the density of the electrolyte in the battery and the coolant in the radiator.

Torque wrench... Used to determine the tightening torque of fasteners, as well as spark plugs.

Revolution counter... Used to adjust the speed idle move carburetor and diagnostics fuel pump.

Hourly Optimometer... Used to determine the runout of the wheel, check the clearance in the wheel hub bearings.

Pressure gauges of various pressures... They are used to check the fuel pump, tires, oil pressure in the engine, pressure in the brake system.

Probes... They are used to check valve clearances, between breaker contacts, check spark plugs and generator.

Painting and drying chambers... Spray-drying chambers of various designs are used for painting a car and subsequent drying. The chamber is a collapsible structure made of insulated panels. In order to prevent dust from getting on the painted surface and in order to ensure sanitary and hygienic working conditions during painting, the chamber is equipped with supply and exhaust ventilation, which is necessary to remove the sprayed paint and the solvent that is part of it.

Maintenance work and current repair can be produced by mechanized, mechanized manual and manual methods. In the mechanized method, metalworking machines, forging and pressing equipment, conveyors for moving cars, electric hoists, electric hoists, beam cranes, stacker cranes, mechanized lifts for hanging cars, diagnostic stands, microprocessor equipment, etc. are used.

In the case of using a mechanized-manual method of performing work, the most labor-intensive operations are mechanized, in which the auto mechanic uses various mechanized tools and equipment, for example, an installation for a manual (hose) washer, oil dispensing equipment, electric and pneumatic wrenches, instrumentation, air dispensers, pneumatic spray guns, as well as other tools, devices and equipment with electric, hydraulic, pneumatic and other drives and driven by a special power source. At the same time, a significant proportion of manual labor can be retained here, when the employee delivers the tool to the place of operations, its adjustment and connection.

In the manual method, work is performed using the simplest tools, as well as devices and devices: pullers (Fig. 1), jacks, cranes and other equipment that does not have a drive from a special energy source.

Figure: one.

The quality of repair and maintenance work, and, first of all, car diagnostics, is significantly increased when using microprocessor technology, which increases the accuracy of calculating parameters, visual and graphical clarity of reproduction of results, which has a beneficial effect on technical condition car. At the same time, traffic safety also increases, since diagnosing faults before leaving the car serves as a guarantee that technical failures will not occur during operation. Careful and high-quality maintenance of the engine and its systems using microprocessor devices reduces the toxicity of exhaust gases, which is especially important when operating a car in urban conditions.

The condition for the correct diagnosis and repair of vehicle malfunctions is a well-chosen tool and devices that are stored on racks or in tool cabinets, portable boxes and mobile carts. At various workplaces, workbenches are used, consisting of a work table, on which, as a rule, a vice and other devices are installed. Workbench drawers store tools.

A set of general-purpose tools for performing technical repairs of a car may include: pullers of various designs, which are used to disassemble and assemble hard-to-remove and assembled parts; locksmith's hammer with a wooden handle; screwdrivers: slotted, Phillips, with a nut welded to the blade, with a forked grip, a tip screwdriver that fits into a socket wrench and some other types of screwdrivers of various sizes; candle key; adjustable wrench; socket wrenches 6-17 mm; special sliding universal pliers; a set of probes and barbs; files different types; socket wrench for loosening wheel nuts; charger battery; needle-nose pliers with insulating sheaths; pliers are universal; sector scissors; fixer knife; chisels; hacksaw for metal; scrapers; metal-cutting tools (drills, countersinks, scrapers, reamers); measuring tool; drilling machines, etc.

Whose age is over 10 years! Regardless of the prestige of the brand and the name of the model, you should be prepared for the fact that you will have to do work that you have never encountered before.

Let's immediately admit the obvious - the standard instructions are unlikely to help, but messages from specialized forums and articles on the Internet can be extremely useful, since a large number of people have already faced the same problems as yours. Consider the most necessary tools, which will definitely be needed, as well as basic preparatory operations.

Car preparation

First of all, you need to realize that you need a reliable lifting mechanism. If you have access to a garage equipped with a special lift, then this greatly simplifies the maintenance process, otherwise you will have to stock up on a set of jacks.

In order to lift the entire vehicle, at least four jacks are required. Support points are usually marked with small triangles on the sills, as well as special metal plates on the bottom. But before purchasing jacks, you need to make sure that their capacity and type of construction are suitable for your vehicle.

The second tool you will come across is a torque wrench, which will allow you to remove or replace the wheels. In addition, it is necessary to stock up on overalls, as well as household gloves, since most of the parts of an old car, even after washing, are heavily soiled and have oil leaks.

The next point of preliminary preparation is to provide good lighting, which will allow you to continue working even in the dark. Moreover, this applies to both work in the garage and in the open air, since without a portable searchlight to carry out renovation work in the engine compartment is simply impossible.

Next, you need to organize your workspace in the most rational way in order to have access to all tools and dismantled parts. For these purposes, a few sturdy plastic boxes are ideal for primary sorting.

In addition, you need to think about the labeling of the removed parts, which will facilitate their subsequent assembly. To do this, you can use special bags with plates on which the name of the unit or unit from which the bolts or parts were removed will be written. Do not rely on your own memory, as a large number of items or a long break in work will negate all your efforts.

Sources of information and help

If possible, you should try to find a maintenance manual for your vehicle as it contains the most accurate and detailed informationthat you need.

Often you can find different repair manuals in different company workshops, which will allow you to choose the most simple and understandable of the presentation options. A paper version of a factory manual can cost up to $ 500, so it is wise to look for a digital version on the Internet.

It should be remembered that no instruction or manual can foresee all possible difficulties and problems, therefore, in the garage, you must have constant access to the Internet in order to look for tips on specialized sites or forums. Ideally, you need to enlist the help of a more experienced companion who can assist you.

Specialized tool

Nearly all cars that sell for $ 500 have a lot of damage and wear and tear, which justifies their low price tag. When working with them, it may be necessary to rip off the rusted fasteners, which will lead to subsequent restoration procedures. For these purposes, a set of dies and taps is ideal, which will allow you to quickly restore threaded connection... In addition, do not forget about a drill with a set of drills that will allow you to drill a broken bolt stuck in a hole.

In some cases, a hydraulic press may be needed to remove a rusted bushing or guide. In addition, it will be necessary to stock up on special cores of a certain diameter in order to easily perform this procedure.

It is equally important to use for stripping and connecting old wires, as well as replacing them.

And in some cases, you cannot do without the help of a second person, especially in such an important procedure as replacing brake fluid... In addition, you will need a set of tubes and small containers to complete the procedure correctly.

Many automakers recommend using only specialized tools, as well as certified spare parts, but their cost may be higher than the price of your car, so it is advisable to monitor the market for more affordable third-party counterparts.
