How to put disc brakes on an UAZ 469. With our own hands: we put disc brakes on an UAZ

Most of the UAZs sold in the post-Soviet space (of course, for the most part in Russia) are equipped with drum brakes, which were produced in the Soviet era. This is due to the fact that at that time many car manufacturers could not afford to use disc brakes on their cars.

Model range of UAZ

Time passed, but the UAZ was never equipped with a disc brake system. However, car owners are not satisfied with this state of affairs. Many of them are wondering how to install disc brakes on a UAZ with their own hands.

In this case, there is only one way out - to change the drum brake system to a disk one. Disc brakes are considered to be the most reliable. But is it worth changing one system to another?

Why it is worth changing the brake system

Before changing the brakes on a UAZ car, you should carefully analyze all the pros and cons of both drum and disc brakes... It is necessary to start with what are the disadvantages of the factory brake system on the UAZ.

  1. Long braking distances are one of the most significant disadvantages of the drum system. This suggests that such brakes are worse at coping with their task of stopping the car.
  2. The accumulation of dirt and moisture - at the expense of their design features drum brakes are clogged with various substances such as dirt, dust and moisture. This leads to an increase braking distance and reduced driving safety.
  3. Difficulties during maintenance - it is extremely difficult to change the brake pads or lubricate them, as well as to carry out any other manipulations on your own.
  4. High wear - Drum systems wear out much faster. This is due to the fact that when water, dirt or dust gets into the brakes, they can start to seize (especially when cornering and hard braking). This circumstance also affects the duration of service. brake pads.
  5. The last factor against such braking systems is the laborious process of cleaning them.

This is what disc brakes look like

Now it's worth considering the advantages of disc pads over drum pads. Here are some of them.

  1. Ease of maintenance.
  2. Self-cleaning after dirt gets into them is a very convenient property that will save time on cleaning the brakes.
  3. Improved road stability - because the system is very reliable, you can feel confident in the car without fear of being unable to stop it in time.
  4. Improved braking - this is especially noticeable when the car is moving at high speeds.
  5. High efficiency when operating with rubber of large diameters - in such a situation, a large frictional force is required in order to stop the machine.

What will need to be changed

Using drum braking systems, you have to constantly monitor their adjustment. In addition, they wear out unevenly and very quickly. As a result, pads have to be changed frequently - and this, as you know, is an additional cost.

It is easy to see that in terms of functionality, disc brakes are much superior to drum brakes, so it is recommended to change the entire brake system at once. If, for some reason, this is not possible, install disc brakes on the front wheels.

A tip for the UAZ owner

What do you need to replace? Based on the experience of professional automotive locksmiths, the following materials and tools will be needed when working.

  1. Set of disc brakes for UAZ.
  2. Bolts М12Х1.
  3. Studs 50x10.
  4. Support holders.
  5. CV joints "Bearfield" - 2 pcs.
  6. Adapters М10-М12.
  7. Brake shields - 2 pcs.
  8. Steering knuckle housing - 2 pcs.
  9. M10 faceplate.
  10. Bearing pins from AD set.
  11. Round file.
  12. Adjustable wrench.
  13. Set of screwdrivers.
  14. Jack.
  15. A hammer.
  16. Lithol or any other lubricating oil.

If you follow the instructions carefully, the result will please you.

Dismantling drum brakes

The installation process begins with dismantling the old system. To do this, you need to do the following.

  1. Remove wheels.
  2. Dismantle the drum.
  3. Unscrew bearing pins.
  4. Dismantle blocks and pipes.
  5. Remove the coupling. To do this, unscrew 6 bolts.
  6. Bend the nut retaining ring, then unscrew it with a special adjustable wrench.
  7. Remove the ring and unscrew the second nut.
  8. Remove the hub.
  9. The nuts on the studs that belong to the brake shield must also be unscrewed. The shield is dismantled together with the pin.

This concludes the dismantling and the installation of a new brake system begins.

Installing a new system

  1. First you need to install the support holders. They are placed with the bosses outward. If the inner hole does not allow for the support of the caliper holders, it must be bored with a regular round file. Use a hammer to seat the holders.
  2. After that, it is necessary to knock out the old pins and install new ones in their place. A spacer is put on them. There is a groove on its inner hole. The spacer must be put on so that the groove is located on the side of the caliper. After that, the installation of parts is in the reverse order of dismantling.
  3. A new one is going rounded fist... Washers for bearings and ball pins do not need to be laid, it is enough to remove from the bushing housing. If the kingpin in the old fist had a backlash, it must be replaced with a new one.
  4. We put everything that we have collected back on the bridge and fasten it with new cardan bolts to the stocking.
  5. Grease must be added to the CV joints, after which they are pushed into the bridge, adding lubricant and into it. If the CV joint rests and does not fit inside, you need to sharpen the washers in the trunnion a little.
  6. The trunnion is screwed onto the brake shield.
  7. Put the hub on the trunnion and tighten it, while adjusting the degree of nozzle.
  8. The caliper is put on brake disk and screwed to the steering knuckle housing.

This concludes the mechanical assembly. However, there are 2 more steps: connecting to the system and securing the hoses.

The connection is carried out as follows. A GTZ is bought for UAZ, a tee for new pipes, a short pipe from the tee, pipes with thin fittings. These parts are assembled new system GTZ through a tee. The rear circuit is connected through the old tee with a new tube.

As for the hoses, they are attached to the frame with a castle nut. Before that, you need to screw the hose into the caliper through a copper washer. Flooded brake fluid, and the system is pumped. This way all fasteners are checked for leaks.

UAZ Patriot is a rather wayward car. In order for it to please with perfect handling, good dynamics and reliability, it should be slightly modernized. Fortunately, today there are such opportunities, and it is quite possible to carry out all the work independently. Car owners quite often want to improve their vehicleby installing disc brakes on the UAZ 469 model.

Characteristics of brakes on UAZ

Reliable brakes provide control and safety

Very often, the owners of "loaves" ask themselves the question: is there a difference which brakes to put on, disc or drum? There is a difference, and a huge one. If the UAZ is drum structure, the car behaves well on a normal road, but if it is necessary to drive on an extreme track, among swamps and bogs, the driver will face the problem of braking.

It will be almost impossible to get out of a predicament without a tow truck. Such a nuisance occurs due to the fact that the brakes quickly become clogged with dirt, which makes it difficult to work, or may even fail, leaving the driver to fight with the vehicle that has lost control.

And even if the first time the brakes work well, you need to know that day after day particles of sand, road debris, dirt that get on the pads while driving, act on them like an abrasive. As a result, the pads are erased, and unevenly. That is why, if the UAZ has a drum brake structure, it is necessary to adjust the brakes on all four wheels quite often in order to avoid serious problems.

A set of disc brakes on the UAZ 469 eliminates the inconvenience that takes so much time, money and effort. In addition, this system makes the braking process much better and the driving safer. In the presence of such a design, the UAZ "loaf" will cope with any strength test and will not let its owner down.

A set of disc brakes allows you not to worry about road conditions. Neither sand nor snow - nothing will have such a destructive effect. Another plus is a significant reduction in braking distance due to an increase in the braking coefficient.

Shortening the braking distance can be very important as anything can happen on the road. Of course, over time, disc brakes on the UAZ also need to be changed, after all, we are not talking about perpetual motion machine, however, this system has a huge advantage over the drum.

How to apply disc brakes yourself

Disk unit for UAZ

If you decide to replace drum brakes with disc brakes, do not be afraid of the scale of the work. And it is not at all necessary to immediately run to a car service, lay out huge sums for the modernization of your car. This work can be done on your own, which will be much more interesting, will charge you with energy and confidence. And with the money saved, you can do something else useful for the machine.

Some drivers are limited to installing the system on the front wheels, but it is better to put the rear disc brakes as well.

The procedure for installing disc brakes on a civil bridge.

  1. Remove the wheel and disassemble the plug.
  2. We remove the brake drum, hub, pads.
  3. Installing the bracket.
  4. We install the hub on the studs and put on the spacer.
  5. We fix the brake disc.
  6. We fix the caliper to the bracket with bolts.
  7. We carry out the installation of the caliper on the bracket.
  8. We connect the brake hose.
  9. We put the wheel in place, check how the brakes work, and go for tea.

Bridges: definition, classification, features

UAZ Patriot can become a very hardy, reliable car, which is not scary to go to trip around the worldif you turn an ordinary "loaf" with average capabilities into a fancy, powerful SUV. The updated bridges will help to do this.

Bridges can be civil, ordinary, as they are also called, collective farm and military. The latter have a lot of advantages, as they allow the car to safely drive off-road. In addition, military bridges significantly increase ground clearance - by as much as 55 cm! The downside is some deterioration in handling and the need to hold the steering wheel tighter. But the UAZ is not an exquisite, sophisticated, pampered convertible that can only roll on ideal roads.

Military bridges for UAZ

If we observe how two identical UAZ vehicles are driving, one of which is equipped with a civilian bridge and the other with a military one, we will witness a fascinating spectacle. On a regular track, cars behave the same way. But then they leave on a difficult section of the road, dotted with holes, swamps, deep mud puddles. The one with the "civilian" immediately slows down, as his driver realizes that the car will not cope with such a test. The soldier rushes dashingly, as before. Here is an even more severe obstacle in front of them - several meters of mud, clay and complete road chaos. The civilian gets stuck and begs for mercy. The military man slows down a little, but he goes through this stage with dignity.

If you are a fan of extreme driving and need a powerful car with high traffic, do not even doubt that by replacing conventional bridges with military ones, you will get an excellent result.

How civil bridges differ from military bridges

  1. The first difference is ground clearance. The civil structure has 22 cm ground clearance, military - all 30 cm.
  2. "Warriors" are much more reliable, since the load between the onboard and main gears evenly distributed and the teeth main pair have large dimensions.
  3. Military bridges were created for army transport equipment, which already speaks of high capabilities, endurance, durability and unpretentiousness.
  4. Military bridges are heavier than civilian ones and require more fuel consumption. This is already a minus, civilians are much more practical in this sense.
  5. A spring suspension can be installed on conventional bridges, but this cannot be done on military ones.

Knowing all the pros and cons of these two designs, you can draw the appropriate conclusions. But we have already made a decision, because we need strong carable to walk through the mud. Therefore, let's proceed to the installation of a military bridge. In the UAZ, for this it is only necessary to change the cardan, since the “warriors” have it somewhat shorter than that of conventional bridges.

Advanced military axles and disc brakes

So, to install disc brakes, we need:

  • disks;
  • two calipers from "Gazelle";
  • brake pads;
  • brake hoses;
  • copper washers M12 and M10;
  • plan washers;
  • sealant;
  • file;
  • drum;
  • a little patience and a desire to complete the work.

According to rough estimates, independent work will cost $ 400. Quite a bit when compared with the price list of services of even the cheapest car service.

Most UAZ owners are familiar with brake problems. Is it ever flowing or sour brake cylinders, crooked brake drums, uneven braking forces on the wheels, which is why the car drags to the side when braking, and after overcoming mud obstacles, the brakes disappear altogether. The drum design is to blame brakes... Although their efficiency is higher than that of discs, since the pad area is much larger, drums overheat very quickly and efficiency drops dramatically. Due to the closed design, drying the brakes after a puddle is very problematic, and after mud baths it is necessary to remove the drums altogether and rinse the entire mechanism with water - there is no moistening. Not suitable for off-road use.

A completely different "song" is ventilated disc brakes. Here and stable characteristics under intensive use, and uniform braking forces, and excellent self-cleaning is enough to press the brake pedal a couple of times. The pads are quick and easy to replace, they rub against the disc too quickly. They perfectly tolerate off-road operation, only it is necessary to periodically flush the calipers from dirt and the pads with discs will have to be changed more often than usual.

Regularly, such brakes began to be installed on UAZ relatively recently, and even then only on the front axle. But what about the owners of old cars? You can change the steering knuckle assembly for new ones with tides under the calipers, but this operation is too low budget and is possible only on civilian bridges.

Since the brake discs went on sale, craftsmen began to come up with adapter plates (plan-washers) to install calipers on old-style steering knuckles and on military bridges. Much time has passed since then, and now, on the contrary, many are at a loss what to choose from the abundance of solutions offered.

Consider the main ones (All variants use UAZ-3160 brake discs):

Disc brakes based on Volga / Gazelle calipers

The most popular solution, seduces the prevalence and cheapness of calipers. Placed on both civilian and military.

Installation on a civil bridge does not cause any problems. But when installing on a military bridge, you will have to sweat and turn to a grinder. Namely, you will have to undermine the caliper a little (cut down the technological tide) and undermine the final drive housing. By the way, there are 2 types of kits for military bridges: under the native (military) hub and under the hub from a civilian bridge.

Plan-washers in both cases are the same, all the difference lies in the thickness of the spacer under the brake disc (for a military hub 40 mm, for a civilian 10 mm) and, accordinglylength wheel studs... When using civilian hubs, there is a hub seal problem. Since on the military it is of a different size. There are 2 solutions again: using an imported oil seal fromWv , which fits perfectly, either change the oil seal ring on the trunnion and use the standard one for the civil hub. Everyone decides for himself what to choose. In some cases, you have to grind the caliper with a file or grinder in places where the brake disc rotates (sometimes the disc touches the caliper).

And don't forget that when installing disc brakes, standard 15-inch discs will no longer work..

Any 16 "rims are required, or 15" alloy wheels with zero or negative offset. Some stamped 15 '' rims can also fit (e.g.ORW ET-6) after a little sharpening of the caliper bracket, this procedure should be carried out only with new pads in the calipers! It is naturally impossible to abuse the staple sharpening.

Disc brakes based on UAZ calipers

Compared to gazelle ones, the efficiency is 30% higher, the brake pedal is more informative, the overall driving comfort is higher, and the brake pad life is longer. However, everything comes at a price. UAZ calipers are 2-3 times more expensive than Gazel ones. Installation kits exist for both military and civilian bridges. Installation is similar to the previous one. Wheels fit those that stand on the UAZ Patriot / Hunter.

Disc brakes based on VAZ 2112 calipers

This option is only intended for the rear axle to prevent overbraking. Since the braking force of these mechanisms is much more modest than the previous ones, therefore, even without the "sorcerer", the car adequately brakes and rear axle does not strive to constantly go into the skid. They are installed on both civil and military bridges. The bracket is used for the 14th disc. True, it is necessary to refine the guide pads and brackets, since the brake disc from 3160 is thicker than the vaz disc. The situation with wheel rims similar to brakes based on Volga / Gazelle calipers.

Preferred Braking Configurations

· Front axle - Caliper 3160, rear - Caliper Volga / Gazelle in the presence of a brake force regulator ("sorcerer").

· Front axle - Caliper 3160, rear - VAZ caliper. "Sorcerer" is not required.

· Front axle - Volga / Gazelle calipers, VAZ calipers. "Sorcerer" is not required.

The result of operating front disc brakes with Volga / Gazelle calipers and standard rear drum brakes UAZ. For about a thousand kilometers with 6-7 rides in mud baths.

Critical pad wear (pads thickness of about 2mm, rivets flush with the pad, surface in grooves)

It "hurts" to look at the drum, the further way is only to the groove or to the dump

But the front disc brakes feel good

The brake disc is in excellent condition, there are no marks, scoring or grooves

Pads wear about 40% (compared to new), the surface is even, without scoring

For this were acquired:

Planes for civil "collective farm" bridges - 2 pcs. with spacer rings - 2 pcs. ,

The Gazelle support is right. + lion. (complete with pads and brackets)
- Brake disc UAZ-3160 - 2 pcs.
- Brake hoses were made specially to order in the required length and in an additional protective sheath (so that they were less susceptible to mechanical damage) - 2 pcs. One end of the hose was with a fitting from the Gazelle "for a bolt", the other was a UAZ one for connection with a copper brake pipe.
In the photo, the left "under the order", the right native UAZ.

- copper sealing rings for the GAZelle caliper brake fitting.
- brake shield ("boot") UAZ-3160 - 2 pcs.
- related products (sealant, gaskets).

After everything needed was collected in the garage, the process itself began ...
This is done in the following order:

1. remove all the old junk to the steering knuckle.

2.we smear the gaskets with sealant on the steering knuckle and on the faceplate:

3.re-drill the holes in the brake shield from the UAZ 3160 to the desired size (to be determined locally)

4. We put the whole thing on the steering knuckle (ears inward)
The sequence of the "sandwich" is as follows: knuckle - gasket + sealant - trunnion - face plate - brake shield (standard tin boot).

5. Put on the hub and lantern ring:

6. Put on the brake disc:

7. We put the support:

8. Adjust the hub ...
In my case, it was not without troubles: the brake disc rubs against the inside of the caliper. Apparently this is due to the "sagging" retaining rings by the bearing and to the rolled bearings themselves.
I was grinding the caliper ... In the near future, I propose to replace the hub assembly with bearings with a new one.

I will note one drawback: there are no holes in the spacer rings for countersunk screws attaching the brake disc to the hub. I drilled 3 holes in each lantern piece, pre-marking them in accordance with the holes in the brake disc. Later, this allowed me to adjust the hub easier and faster, because With these screws, you can now immediately "pull" the brake disc to the hub and see if it clings to the brake caliper.
But this is my initiative, you can do without it.

9. Then we put on the hoses and pump the brakes ...

At the moment, almost all foreign-made cars are equipped with disc brakes. The domestic auto industry still uses drum systems on most of its cars. Although the first copies of cars with disc brakes were developed back in the USSR, when the VAZ 2108 appeared. True, they only went to the front axle, while the rear was still equipped with drum brakes. Such "luxury" is not provided for UAZ cars at all (even on UAZ "Patriot" rear disc brakes are not installed). They still produce machines with

But now some car owners are independently converting their cars with a different braking system. However, as practice shows, drivers are not always content with taking such a step. In today's article we will try to find out whether it is worth installing on the UAZ or not.

Installation benefits

Firstly, given type the brake is renowned for its high operational stability. Such systems provide effective braking of the car in any road conditions... And if the drums stop functioning after the ingress of water, the discs continue their work further. In addition, these systems provide the best air circulation, which enters through special ventilation holes. In this case, the pads do not heat up and do not stick to the disc, respectively, the wheel will never jam at the next serpentine or traffic light. Due to the strong air flow, dirt and road dust do not linger in them for a long time. Drum brakes, on the other hand, may stop functioning after being hit by small particles.

disadvantages

Remarkably, the disadvantages of installing this system are not at all in their functionality, high cost of maintenance or inaccessibility of spare parts. The main disadvantage opened after installation of this part. Installing disc brakes on an UAZ is still half the trouble, although here you will have to work hard to mount the part into the disc (we will consider this point a little below). After that, you will have to enter all the changes in the data sheet. And here the worst begins. You will need to carry out the certification procedure, the car will be subjected to a number of all kinds of tests, after which you will have to pay for all this, stand in line and issue all the necessary papers. Only after that, the traffic police will write you changes in the vehicle registration certificate.

As for the installation phase, which we skipped, there are also disadvantages here. The fact is that companies producing such braking systems, do not manufacture disc brakes for UAZ. We have to take kits from other machines. Therefore, in any case, after the purchase, you will have to modify and complete this mechanism... In any case, you need to widen the track at UAZ or buy other disks with negative and zero offset.

Conclusion

As you can see, disc brakes on UAZ are not the most suitable option for tuning or upgrading. Yes, these brakes are much more efficient, but can you survive all the certifications and improvements? That is why disc brakes on UAZ are not so popular.
