With the help of our recommendations, you can easily and quickly replace your old, uncomfortable, ugly or faulty (underline as appropriate) steering wheel with a new one - comfortable, nice and working properly.

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the tools required in the process, including,
socket wrench, slotted and Phillips screwdriver; actually new wheel and preferably a manual for the operation of your car (this will help in solving difficult problems). After everything is prepared, you should proceed to the main stage.

Remove the key from the ignition, open the hood, to avoid a short circuit, disconnect the terminals from the battery. Now you can not be afraid of anything and proceed to dismantling the old steering wheel, set it in its original position in advance, pay attention to the fact that the wheels must stand straight. The procedure for removing the steering wheel is described in detail in the owner's manual of your car, following the advice indicated in it, dismantle the steering wheel. If you, unfortunately, do not have this magic instruction, proceed according to our recommendations below.

First of all, you need to remove the outer cover from the steering wheel, which is usually attached to the latches. Please note that this procedure will require little effort. However, sometimes the casing from the back is fixed with a screw, then, in order to remove it, you will have to unscrew the bolt.

The next step is to disconnect the mechanism sound signal car, carefully, taking care not to damage the wires, turn off the horn and unscrew the bolts with which it is fixed. Pry off the case with a flat screwdriver blade.

Special attention and care should be taken when replacing the steering wheel if an airbag is present. After all, one awkward movement and it will work. After the above procedures, it's time to disconnect the SRS, no matter how complicated this procedure may seem at first glance, you can easily perform it yourself - you just need to find three wiring and disconnect the terminals. Then you should remove the pillow and check its integrity.

Here is the difficult stage behind, now you need to find the nut that secures the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Remove the stud, inspect it and if it is broken, replace it. Unscrew the nut with a socket wrench.

And now you can easily remove the old steering wheel, you just have to make a little effort to pull it towards you. Ready!

Installing a new steering wheel

Now it's time to install a new steering wheel. Do not forget to put the special spacer on the steering shaft, it should come with the new steering wheel. Then install new steering wheel and secure it with a nut. To deliver less hassle during installation, try to choose a replacement steering wheel that is identical to the original. Then, after completing the above indicated steps in reverse order, you can easily mount the new steering wheel. If you have chosen a different type of steering wheel, read the instructions attached to it and follow the recommendations indicated in it.

From this article, you will learn how to remove the steering wheel on a VAZ 2101-2107 car, what tools are required for this, and most importantly, how not to get injured while carrying out this work.

Removal and installation of the steering wheel can be done for several reasons:

  • replacement of a conventional steering wheel with a new or sports version
  • after adjusting the wheel alignment (), you need to set the steering wheel to the correct position
  • it is necessary to remove the steering wheel to gain access to the replacement of other parts, for example, the steering column switches

Removal and installation of the steering wheel VAZ "Classic"

The procedure for removing the steering wheel:

  • Disconnect the negative terminal battery to avoid accidentally sounding the horn when operating the steering wheel.
  • Use a screwdriver to remove the plug in the center of the steering wheel. (fig. 1)
  • Use a 24 "socket wrench to unscrew the steering wheel mounting nut. (fig. 2)
  • Remove the steering wheel. (fig. 3)

How easy and safe is it to replace the steering wheel?

The operation of replacing the steering wheel is not particularly difficult, but safety precautions should be observed. The basic steps on how to remove the steering wheel have been described above, but in some cases the following tips may be needed:

Method # 1. If the steering wheel sits firmly on the shaft and cannot be removed, then it is necessary to loosen the steering nut as much as possible, but leave it for one turn (to preserve the teeth, nose and other parts of the face). Then sit in a chair and sharply and evenly hit the steering wheel with your palms from below, up along the steering axis. After several such blows, the steering wheel should fly off the shaft.

The main thing - do not forget to leave the nut on one turn!

Method # 2. To remove the steering wheel, you can use an old Zhiguli jack. The base of the jack must be resting against the steering shaft through a wooden spacer, wrapped with a rope around the steering wheel and thrown over the top of the jack. Place a piece of cloth (rag) where the rope touches the rudder so as not to scratch the rudder. Next, gradually pull with a jack and remove the steering wheel. Do not forget to completely unscrew the steering wheel mounting nut, as in this case the steering wheel will neatly "come off" from the shaft.

Installing the steering wheel

The steering wheel is installed in the reverse order. The steering wheel is mounted on the shaft in only one position. The upper splined part of the steering shaft has double lugs, and the splined hole of the steering wheel hub has a double groove. (fig. 4)

Many drivers feel that they will never have to deal with changing the steering wheel in a car - this unit seems reliable and unshakable. However, it is not uncommon to encounter breakdowns that are associated with wear on the bearing, fasteners or electronic components installed inside the steering wheel. In addition, some drivers change the steering wheel for a custom product in order to increase the comfort of the car or improve handling. In any case, replacing the steering wheel is a rather difficult procedure. To do everything right and prevent damage, you need to follow the instructions exactly.

Not every newbie will fuse with a wheel change on their own.

Steering wheel selection

It should not only be appearance- you need to rely on the correspondence of the mounts to your car, but also on the convenience of using such a unit. Functionality is also of great importance - in most modern cars the steering wheel is equipped with multimedia control buttons and various electronic systems. Ideal option selection is made on the recommendation of the manufacturer - such steering wheels have certificates of conformity and appropriate marks on the packaging.

If you are purchasing a non-standard product, you should take care of purchasing an adapter. This handlebar accessory must be factory manufactured. It is better not to listen to your neighbors in the garage as they carved the adapter on their own or ordered it in the workshop, since you can hardly find a workpiece of the right size from alloy steel or high-strength alloy. Remember - buying a low-quality steering wheel and additional components is fraught with loss of control at the most inopportune moment!

Preparatory stage

Before going to a car shop, carefully read the operating instructions for your car - it is quite possible that you can replace the steering wheel only if you have a special puller. In addition, check the presence and location of wires for connecting the following items:

  • Airbags;
  • Multimedia control keys;
  • Signal;
  • Control sensors and lamps.

It is also advisable to stock up on a flat and Phillips screwdriver, wrenches and a knob to unscrew the central nut. Before starting work on replacing the steering wheel, the terminals must be removed from the battery.

The first step is to remove the outer steering wheel cover, under which the electronics, airbag unit and mountings are located. Everything must be done very carefully, since the risk of damage to important components of the steering wheel is very high. For this operation, a flat screwdriver is used, with which the casing fasteners are pushed. Now we see in front of us the "insides" of the steering wheel - the first step is to carefully remove the signal blocks and airbags, which are laid aside on a flat surface. After that you can pick up Phillips screwdriver and remove the electrical contacts from the steering wheel - so as not to confuse them when replacing, you can stick notes on the wiring.

Removing the old steering wheel

In order for the steering wheel replacement to be successful, check if it has clips - for this you need to inspect the rear side of the hub with a mirror or take a photo using your phone. Usually they are represented by small thickening of the steering shaft with slots that open in the extreme position. If there are latches, you need to remove them one by one - for this, the steering wheel turns to the right and left, respectively, after which a screwdriver is inserted into the mentioned holes. Slightly pressing on it, you will hear a click, and you will feel that a small space has appeared between the steering wheel and the column. After doing this with the second retainer, proceed to remove the central nut.

This procedure is usually performed with an M12 screwdriver, since the nut is usually recessed deep enough into. When removing the nut, the steering wheel should be supported with one hand, not allowing it to rotate freely. When the procedure is completed, it is worth carefully pulling the steering wheels, controlling the process with a side glance. When replacing the steering wheel, it is very important not to damage the wires and electrical contacts - you will have to monitor their tension. Carefully release the pulling wires and remove the old steering wheel permanently.

Installation

If you need to use an adapter to replace the steering wheel, start by installing it. Carefully check whether the part fits snugly on the shaft, and only then put the steering wheel itself on it. Lowering the wheel to about the middle, pass the wires through the special holes and try not to damage them by installing the steering wheel in its regular place.

After that, the assembly continues in the reverse order - this stage of replacing the steering wheel begins with connecting electrical contacts to the locations of buttons and sensors. When everything is ready, install the airbag and signal blocks in their place. After you tighten all the connections and double-check the integrity of the wires, you can install the casing - the steering wheel replacement is complete!

Now you need to check - for this, swing the steering wheel to the sides and pull it towards you. Also, listen carefully to how you feel as you drive the first few kilometers. If it seems to you that you installed the steering wheel with your own hands incorrectly, it is better to immediately contact the service center so as not to face mortal danger. Also, if you have damaged the airbag module or electrical contacts, collect without all the electrics and go straight to the master who will help you carry out the recovery procedure. For those who are not confident in their abilities, it is better to immediately apply for professional help if necessary, replace the steering wheel.

Simple or difficult?

At first glance, there are no difficult points in the instructions. However, it is worth starting the process of replacing the steering wheel in order to understand that each operation requires care and accuracy. Have experienced craftsmen the whole procedure takes at least an hour, and for untrained beginners - up to several hours. After completing the replacement and assembly of the steering wheel, it is also worth checking the quality of the work performed to ensure your safety. Experts also recommend listening to your feelings at first - if you feel something unusual, you need to urgently seek qualified help.

The steering wheel is literally the closest and most important element of a car's control system. That is why this element must necessarily be reliable so that the motorist can easily make a turn or maneuver, since during driving, his hands are constantly on the steering wheel. Often, for one reason or another, the car owner wants to replace the steering wheel and perform, for example, in order to replace it with a more modern or convenient one, or simply because of a malfunction of the steering wheel itself. Today I will tell you how to do it yourself, this procedure is quite simple, so any car owner can do it.

In order to replace, you will need:

1. New steering wheel;

2. Spacer for the installation of a new "steering wheel";

3. Your car's manual (optional);

4. Slotted and Phillips screwdriver;

5. Socket wrench.

Ready? Then let's get started!

1. Oddly enough, it all starts with opening the hood of the car and disconnecting the negative terminal from. This will allow you to minimize the possibility of a short circuit in the car's electrical network, which can occur when dismantling the old one.

2. Put the steering wheel in its original position, making sure that the wheels are straight. After that, it would not hurt to familiarize yourself with the operating manual of your car, it must necessarily describe the process of replacing the steering system.

3. Next, remove the outer casing, as a rule, it is fastened with special latches, for this you will need to apply some effort. By the way, sometimes the casing can be attached from the back. In this case, carefully unscrew the bolt.

4. Now you need to find the car horn mechanism. Then, very carefully unplug it, and "loosen" the mounting bolts and remove its body using a flat screwdriver.

5. If your car is equipped - disconnect it, for this it is enough to find three wires and disconnect the terminals. Then carefully remove the pillow and visually inspect it for damage.

6. It is necessary to find the central nut with which the steering wheel is attached to the steering shaft, then remove the stud. If it is broken, it should be replaced. Unscrew the nut with a socket wrench.

7. Remove the steering wheel from the shaft by pulling it slightly towards you.

8. The new steering wheel can now be installed.

9. Place the pre-prepared spacer on the steering shaft, which is usually supplied with a new steering wheel, then install the steering wheel and tighten it with a nut.

11. Last but not least, do not forget to connect electronic circuit, in case the new steering wheel does not have an airbag. The purpose of such a scheme is to trick the system by emulating the presence of an airbag.
