Best selling winter tires. What are the best winter tires

Winter is a difficult time for every driver, and the Russian winter is more of a natural disaster. When and what to "change" your vehicle - headache for all car enthusiasts.

Especially for our readers who have not yet decided on the choice of tires, we offer our review of the best winter tires 2018-2018. To the rating winter tires 2019 will include both the best winter studded tires and other solutions such as friction models. Let's get down to business.

CONTINENTAL IceContact 2 SUV

Rubber from the legendary German brand, which also has production in our country. Compared to tires previous generation The IceContact 2 SUV offers us one and a half times thicker spike coverage, and the spike itself, dubbed Kristall Stud, is a quarter lighter than its predecessor. StudOn Retention Technology guarantees increased security on problematic sections of the path, consisting of ice and snow.

Experts and happy owners of these tires attribute to their advantages good grip on ice and a high level of handling, as well as an important factor for people traveling with families - low noise level. But, as everyone understands, you have to pay for safety and comfort - the price for this rubber is one of the highest on the market, but everyone has the right to choose what is more important to him. NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA 9 SUV

Finns know a lot about really harsh and extreme winter conditions, and therefore the flagship line of the eminent brand will not leave indifferent fans of real winter adventures, but car owners who do not often leave the city area will not leave offended.

Among the features that set these tires apart from competitors, special attention should be paid to the innovative and first-time applied technology of functional studding, which involves the use of two different types thorns. This innovation will help the driver not to get stuck in a snowy mess and not to lose control on an icy road.

The decision on the geometry of the tread body, which uses beveled edges, looks just as unique against the background of competitors, but very few people can be surprised by the carbide tips on the spikes. Everyone already knows about the strengths of "Hakki" - amazing durability and consistently high positions in tests on any kind of tracks and obstacles, but the price bites.

Bridgestone Blizzak DMV-2

And here are the first non-studded winter tires in our ranking. The Japanese were shrewd enough to realize the difference both in weather conditions and, unfortunately, road surface with their Russian colleagues, and therefore released a line designed for the difficult conditions of our country. The critically acclaimed ice handling and braking performance of the last generation of these tires has been significantly improved, so the owner of a crossover or SUV can feel confident both on urban asphalt and in the absence of this asphalt.

Among the disadvantages, the owners of these tires often note the poor geometry of the tread, which leads to quick blurring, and cleaning, in turn, is an extremely laborious process.

Bridgestone Blizzak DMV-2

Gislaved Nord Frost 100 SUV

Another German manufacturer in our ranking. Signature advantages include an interesting Nordic Silica rubber compound, which includes highly active carbon black and an innovative polymer that provides excellent grip on ice and snow. Unlike the previous rating model, you will not have any problems with cleaning these tires - self-cleaning in snow and other wet environments will do everything for you.

For those who prioritize safety, everything is in order here too. Shorter braking distances and excellent steering response in snow will help you feel comfortable even in difficult driving situations.

But drivers who value silence will have a hard time - many owners of this rubber note high noise when speeding over 50 km / h. Also, a rather modest range of sizes should be included in the piggy bank of minuses - it's not a fact that your disks will have suitable tires and you can choose this brand.

Pirelli Ice Zero SUV

The Italians, feeling the victorious history of the brand behind their backs, are in no hurry to waste words describing their innovative technologies and presenting old ideas in beautiful new wrappers. Improved rubber compound, improved tread pattern, even more strict control quality is enough to stay at the forefront of the race of tire giants.

Experienced owners advise not to take the bull by the horns from the start, but to run the rubber at calm speeds until reaching the 500-1000 km mark, but after these self-restraints, you will receive a set of really cool winter studded tires. The advantages include handling, durability, cross-country ability. What else do you need from a winter kit?

Michelin X-Ice Xi2

But the French do not skimp on words - the emphasis on uniqueness is made in almost every detail of the tire. Part of the tread sipes have been replaced by micro-pumps designed to remove water from the icy road surface, which looks like a really innovative idea. The Flex-Ice rubber compound increases the wear resistance of already successful tires in this component, and also maintains the elasticity of the tires even with excessive low temperatures.

The increased contact patch has a beneficial effect on the most important characteristics in our harsh realities - handling, braking and traction properties. The interesting geometric design of the Z-shaped sipes adds rigidity to the tread and makes the tire superb handling.

The expert assessment coincides with the declared strengths of rubber, and therefore singles out into the group of favorites in ice and snow conditions, also adding low fuel consumption to the piggy bank. But in the more herbivorous conditions of dry, quality asphalt, you may be disappointed with the braking performance of these tires, so choose this model it is worth carefully considering its future operation.

Hankook Dynapro I * Cept RW08

Another Southeast manufacturer in our column is the Koreans from Hankook Tire. Similar in terms of output characteristics, the rubber compound with the previous tire - the same silicon is responsible for decent grip, but there is also silica, which helps the tire not to stiffen in the cold. Through a complex and time-consuming computer modeling process, the company has found its easily recognizable wave-shaped sipe tread pattern to promote traction and shortening. braking distance.

Do not forget that this tire belongs to the class of friction tires - it is Velcro, which obviously puts it in a losing position in conditions of snow porridge and icing at temperatures close to zero, but at low temperatures it is able to give odds to many brothers with studs. Again, the class itself obliges the given tire to be quieter and more predictable when driving. An important plus for many motorists will be its low cost relative to many other representatives of the rating.

Hankook Dynapro I * Cept RW08

Dunlop Grandtrek Ice02

One glance at the design of the British tire, adorned with icy peaks on the side, is enough to realize - yes, this tire is for harsh winters and difficult routes.

The directional triangular tread pattern is aimed at combating water and snow masses, and thus improving handling. 3D faceted sipes "Miura-Ori" protect the tread block and prevent premature wear of any of its parts. Also of interest are the tungsten carbide core studs that help achieve outstanding penetration performance, and the aluminum body makes the studs much lighter than their predecessor models.

As for the operation of these tires, opinions differ here. If ice, in principle, is not recommended for these tires due to their weak grip and handling on it, then snow and asphalt are quite within the teeth of this rubber, if you do not touch on the issue of braking properties. Goodyear ultragrip ice 2

Another Velcro, but from the top manufacturer - Goodyear. Tires manufactured specifically for the needs of residents of countries with a climate of low temperatures and low humidity, including Russia, among others, are designed to combat the effect of sudden temperature changes, which studded tires do not always successfully respond to.

If we are talking about the pros, then first of all, again, we are talking about the "family" advantages of friction tires - grip on snow, regardless of its structure, as well as on asphalt, remains traditionally high. With ice, things are much less rosy. Many owners note low impact strength, which is fraught with big troubles in hard-to-reach places. Buy at a bargain price on S-Shina.ru

NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA R2 SUV

Without exception, all drivers who have had the pleasure of using this rubber unanimously declare that the rubber is surprisingly quiet for winter tires, practically not inferior to summer tires. As a good bonus, the process of balancing these tires can be noted, which does not cause any lengthy and laborious adjustments.

R16 tires are one of the most popular sizes on the Russian market, as many small and medium crossovers and SUVs are designed for this size. The tests involved the most popular 215 / 65R16 SUV tires: studded and non-studded. The tests (acceleration-deceleration, cross-country ability in deep snow, etc.) were carried out at the AVTOVAZ test site on a Renault-Duster crossover, in severe weather conditions.

Crossover winter studded tire test

Rating of winter tires 2019-2017 for crossovers

10. Matador MP 50 Sibir Ice SUV

Average price - 4 601 rubles. The main plus of this SUV R16 tire is the price. At the same time, the tires are distinguished by good handling, the rubber is quite durable, the studs have a strong hold, are well suited for driving in the city and behave satisfactorily in difficult conditions. Cons: Very soft rubber and thin sidewall.

9. Dunlop Grandtrek Ice02

Average price - 4,440 rubles. Good for asphalt as well as snow and ice - confident braking, confident start. The spikes are firmly seated. A great option for snowy roads and icy trails. At the same time, the noise on the asphalt does not go beyond the usual for a studded tire.

8. Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice Arctic

Average price - 5,280 rubles. This model received an honorable second place. It has excellent ice grip and incredible deep snow permeability. However, there are also downsides. The main and main one is a weak sidewall, which means that you will have to drive very carefully - after all, such a tire can be easily damaged on potholes. And the movement of the car on these tires is accompanied by a strong hum.

7. Continental Conti4x4IceContact

Average price - 7,965 rubles. Strengths this model offers excellent performance on ice and snow and super reliable stud retention. However, a car on such rubber does not like dry asphalt and deep snowdrifts.

6. Gislaved NordFrost 100

Average price - 7 740 rubles. One of the best winter crossover tires for city driving. Differ low level noise, excellent grip on dry and wet asphalt. For out-of-town trips, they are worse - the quality of driving on snow (both loose and packed) and ice is not very high.

5. Gislaved NordFrost 100 SUV

Average price - 6 579 rubles. Designed for city driving (excellent braking on asphalt, both dry and wet), they are characterized by good handling and a clear course in almost any conditions. However, the performance on ice and in snow is rather modest.

4. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 SUV

Average price - 6 933 rubles. According to the results of winter tire tests, SUV is the best winter studded tire on the Russian market in 2019-2017. Excellent grip on ice and snow and high cross-country ability irreplaceable when driving in winter. Alas, excellent qualities in difficult conditions turn out to be average in city driving; the Hakkapeliitta 8 has average braking properties on dry asphalt. The second disadvantage is the high price.

3. Continental ContiIceContact

Average price - 8 570 rubles. The third place in the ranking of winter tires for the 2019-2017 crossover goes to Continental ContiIceContact. She's the most expensive of the top 10. When choosing, it must be borne in mind that there are three varieties of the model - HD, BD and BD2. And they have different characteristics... The BD2 is designed for sporty driving in difficult conditions (it has the most studs, the studs themselves are longer, and therefore the noisiest). BD has already been discontinued. HD is more of an urban bus with occasional out-of-town trips when weather conditions are good. It has fewer spikes, is less noisy than previous varieties, and performs well on asphalt and icy roads. But on the snow, especially loose, it is already worse.

2. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 SUV

Average price - 9 603 rubles. Finns know a lot about winter driving. Therefore, the second in the ranking of winter studded tire suv 2019-2017 Awarded for the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 SUV. It is an excellent rubber for tough weather conditions. Excellent road holding on almost any surface, from asphalt road to snow and ice. The ride of the car is smooth, soft, the tires are tenacious and quiet enough.

1. Nokian Nordman 5 SUV

Average price - 6 510 rubles. And the first place in the ranking of winter tires for SUVs goes to the Nordman 5 SUV from Nokian. Although the performance on ice, snow and asphalt these tires are quite average (with the exception of lateral grip, which is slightly better), the car on these tires has excellent roadholding stability on asphalt. An excellent choice for city driving and out-of-town trips.

Non-studded winter crossover tire test

Non-studded tires are often chosen for their reduced noise levels as well as their soft ride. But at the same time, they provide reliable stability on the road, even on icy or snowy roads. Consider the rating of the most popular non-studded models for crossovers.

10. Dunlop GrandTrek SJ6

Average price - 4 740 rubles. The tires have increased wear resistance. Composed of silicon with a carbon blend for increased traction. It is easy and comfortable to ride on such rubber, it is practically silent.

9. Hankook Dynapro I * Cept RW08

Average price - 4 540 rubles. The mixture contains silicon, which increases traction, and silica, which increases the operating temperature range. The tires are virtually silent due to the sipes in the waves.

8. Yokohama Geolandar I / T-S G073

Average price - 5,010 rubles. When using these tires, the car becomes very maneuverable when driving both on a straight road and when making turns, turns or lane changes. The grooves perfectly clean the tires from dirt, dust and snow slurry. Three-chamber sipes reduce the likelihood of getting into the aquaplaning zone, as well as significantly reduce the braking time of the car.

7. Toyo Observe Gsi 5

Average price - 4,810 rubles. The sipes used allow for increased grip on snow and ice, which results in a rather short braking distance. High abrasion resistance ensures safety and comfort while driving.

6. Pirelli Scorpion Winter

Average price - 5 630 rubles. They have a symmetrical pattern, provide a high level of stability when cornering or changing lanes. Suitable for use on crossovers with anti-lock braking system. They allow braking even on descents, as well as when performing other maneuvers on a winter road.

“Prepare summer tires in winter and winter tires in summer” - this simple rule regularly helps motorists save time, money and nerve cells. So it's time to take a look at our 2017 winter tire test and choose the very tires that are ideal for both weather and temperature conditions, as well as lifestyle and driving style.

Winter tire tests 2017-2018 (Behind the Wheel, Auto Review, ADAC, Auto Bild)

Tests of winter and summer tires held every year by a number of qualified organizations. This includes:

ADAC Club

ADAC is a serious organization and has been representing the interests of motorists in Germany for over a century. The largest auto club in Europe checks car brands for quality and safety, and also regularly tests tires. It is difficult to achieve high marks for tire manufacturers from ADAC - their rigorous testing, carried out with true German thoroughness, can leave neither the bottom nor the tires from the tire. The usual results are "satisfactory", and rarely does any tire get a "good" verdict.

The oldest Russian magazine dedicated to motorists and their iron horses... Regularly tests tires popular and not very popular in the post-Soviet market in hot and cold weather, and also conducts interesting research such as "How temperature affects the length of the braking distance of a car."

Car enthusiasts from more than 35 countries around the world read licensed editions of the German Auto Bild magazine. The magazine presents not only automotive sports and industry news, but also comparative tests, test drives and, of course, tire testing in various interesting places - for example, in a small Finnish village in the Arctic Circle.

The popular Russian (and formerly Soviet) edition "Autoreview" regularly conducts comparative tests of cars at the proving ground, crash tests using Euromethods with its own independent rating, and also tests car goods, from fuel to child car seats. Of course, tires are also on the list.

Rating of winter studded tires 2017-2018

Since the latest rubber tests are carried out during peak season, the rating was based on the tests of tires R14, R15, R16, R17, carried out last winter... When distributing places in the list, the following were also taken into account: the popularity of the model in Russia, ratings, reviews and the cost of tires on the Yandex Market service.

Despite the differences in conditions, the testing of the best winter studded tires 2017-2018. are carried out according to a similar method:

  • acceleration and braking dynamics are tested on ice, snow, wet and dry asphalt;
  • takes into account the time of passing a certain distance on different types coverings;
  • an assessment of the level of vehicle handling, its smoothness and how noisy the tires are.

10. Gislaved Nord Frost 200

Average cost - 5 570 rubles.

Opens the rating of winter studded tires 2017-2018 new model from the Swedish company Gislaved. The main highlight of the two-hundredth model is an asymmetric tread pattern and a new ultra-light (less than 1 gram) stud in the shape of a three-pointed star. In general, the tires are quiet, soft, with good directional stability, adhere well to any surface - however, on fresh snow and ice it may require adjusting the driving style. On a slightly icy track, you should not accelerate more than 100 km on such tires, otherwise the car will be driven.

Price, on average - 5 982 rubles.

The name of the tire itself says that its developers (Russian Cordiant company) paid particular attention to the behavior of the tire on the snow. The tread pattern is directional, the center of which is a closed rib, which in theory should significantly reduce the likelihood of aquaplaning in the snow. (It is interesting, by the way, that this very pattern almost exactly copies the tread of the third place in the rating.) The result is good rubber at a budget price that rides really well on snow. True, asphalt is not given to her as well as snow.

Average price - 8 600 rubles.

A clear improvement over the ICE 01, both in terms of directional stability and noise reduction on asphalt. It is difficult to expect the response speed of more expensive rubber from the rubber of the middle price segment, but the Dunlop SP Winter ICE 02 fulfills its value 100%. Advantages: high cross-country ability, very strong sidewall, excellent spikes, rowing in a snowy mess. True, it does not feel very good on the asphalt, and it makes a noticeable noise, and at speeds above 90 km / h it causes increased consumption fuel.

Cost, on average - 6 670 rubles.

Good city tires with the ability to feel comfortable in not too deep snow. It rides well both on asphalt and on dense snow, the noise is within normal limits. It should be noted that this rubber is best used in central Russia, where temperatures rarely exceed -15 degrees. But Siberians with deep snows and prolonged frosts are better off thinking about a more hardy version.

The average cost is 2,410 rubles.

Nokian's Nordman series is a more budget-friendly version of the acclaimed Hakkapeliitta. Soft, comfortable, low-noise tires at a reasonable price, which feels good both on dry asphalt and on snow. On wet asphalt, based on the reviews, it is better not to accelerate over 100 km. A good option for city dwellers in the "home - work - dacha" mode. Due to the softness of the rubber, it is difficult to get out of the rut, and you should be careful with curbs, branches and other sharp objects. But in general great option in terms of price / quality.

You can buy, on average, 4,860 rubles.

If previous model While the top 10 was primarily intended for urban driving, Continental's IceContact 2 is best off-road. Feels great at low temperatures both on snow and on crust or ice, is able to take its owner anywhere. A big advantage is the many spikes (there are 196 of them). There is no hum from these tires.

But on wet, frozen or snow-covered asphalt, special care must be taken. Also not the most best reviews earned the "behavior" of rubber on the snow porridge, where it begins to scour.

It is offered, on average, for 10 260 rubles.

Although the G8 is a newer model in the Hakkapeliitta range, it is slightly inferior in popularity to its predecessor. One of the main reasons is the very soft sidewall, as a result of which you will have to carefully select the discs and, despite the excellent cross-country ability, carefully choose the places to ride. Otherwise, hernias and cuts. But this rubber is very predictable, has a large number of studs (190 pieces) and goes well on ice and packed snow.

It is sold, on average, for 7,100 rubles.

It differs from the eighth model in a smaller number of spikes (by 30%), but its hexagonal anchor spikes are longer and heavier. They use a technology called "bear claw", which prevents the stud from tilting, thereby improving grip. Quiet, reliable, albeit expensive rubber, which, despite the generation, enjoys a high reputation among motorists. Feels good both on snow and on ice and asphalt, while being hardy and strong. However, like the eighth version, the Hakkapeliitta 7 has a very soft sidewall and this is felt when the steering wheel is turned sharply.

Average price - 9,080 rubles.

And here is the next generation of the acclaimed line. The fruit of four years of development efforts of the Finnish company is said to exceed the characteristics of the G8 by 5-10%. The biggest highlight of the new model is the two types of studs (although in general there are slightly fewer than its predecessor), which should improve lateral grip on snowy or icy roads. And changes in the rubber compound will help the tire feel better at low temperatures. So far, according to preliminary tests, the tires promise to be excellent, but the chickens are counted in the fall - when the mass sales of the Nine will begin.

1. Pirelli Ice Zero

On average, it costs 15 550 rubles.

Paradoxically, it turned out that the Italians know better about the production of winter studded rubber than the inhabitants of snowy Scandinavia. One of the highlights of the model is the original double carbide stud insert, which provides the tire with excellent ice performance.

Other advantages: high cross-country ability, good acceleration and braking performance on snow and ice, high directional stability. And endurance - there are chances to bring the tires to retirement with a full set of studs. Excellent, almost universal rubber for winter conditions, feels good both on asphalt and outside the city. True, the noise level is quite high. And the price "bites".

What winter tires are better to choose in the end

So which winter tires are best for you? The 2017 ranking includes both “urban” types of rubber and tires designed for more severe weather conditions. For frequent off-road driving, Pirelli Ice Zero, Continental IceContact 2 or Dunlop SP Winter ICE 02 are perfect. For quiet city driving, it is better to choose Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000, Nokian Nordman 5 or Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8. Otherwise, when choosing tires, you should first take into account temperature conditions, and the surface you will have to ride on.

On the world market car tires winter tires account for a modest 7-8%. And in Russia, the production of tires for winter period- a profitable business, they account for up to 60% of the market. Suitable for our country winter tires scandinavian type with a massive tread, good for pushing snow and ice crust.

In order to choose the most best winter tires 2015, 2016, tests of 4 leading foreign and domestic automotive publications were studied:

  • TestWorld

In addition, compiled winter season.

Rating of winter tires for the season 2015-2016

Click to open in full size

Optimization of the snow clearance is due to a more open tread pattern. The tires hold the road well even in poor grip conditions.

Pros: these are quiet tires that accelerate without problems and hold grip on a snowy road, ride confidently through slush. They have the shortest braking distance of the reviewed models with 100 km / h on dry asphalt.

Cons: Acceleration and braking on ice is mediocre. Worst test time during a circle test. Test Michelin rubber X-IceNorth 3 has shown their suitability for areas where there is little snow and ice.

The Formula Ice-clad car handles well on dry pavement, and the aluminum hex stud helps to grip and brake well on snow and ice.

Pros: the tires have excellent braking performance on dry asphalt and have shown a high smoothness of the ride.

Cons: failure during ice and snow tests. Suitable as a budget option for a metropolis, with rare trips out of the city.

Low-noise Korean-made rubber with 180 studs (depends on the size) and high-density siping system for shortening the braking distance.

Pros: the best time in turns on an icy track, the test drivers had no complaints about the tires while driving the car on a slope in the snow, on a circular track and forest tracks. They behave confidently on a muddy track, on a dry and wet road surface.

Cons: somewhat uneven behavior in the snow.

The tires are equipped with studs with optimized head geometry (edges in all directions). This helps a firm grip on ice surfaces. Wide contact patch with a lot of hooks.

Pros: the rubber has successfully passed the snow and ice test, deserved good grades on wet surfaces (overall rating - 8.3 according to Test World).

Cons: High rolling resistance and long braking distances on dry asphalt.

The grooves of this rubber have V-shaped slots. Their purpose is to provide confident grip on snowy areas.

Pros: Tests Tuulilasi and TestWorld on ice and snow, this model withstood with dignity, did not disgrace on wet asphalt and water-snow "porridge" (overall rating - 8.4 according to Test World).

Disadvantages: in emergency situations on dry asphalt they react more slowly than other models considered.

Under the spikes of the tires there are elastic pads that soften contact with the road, reduce noise and extend the life of the spikes.

Pros: Russian test teams of the past years rated the Nokian Nordman 4 as a "strong average".

Cons: The Test World team did not like how the tires performed on wet asphalt, and most of all on ice. They gave the subjects an overall rating of 7.1, only the studded Sunny SN3860 (5.9) were worse.

To further improve grip, a projection ("bear claw") is made on the tread block, which creates tension in it. When braking, the cleat is held upright.

From the pros: "Behind the wheel" praised the tire for its low price (from 1930 rubles), average fuel consumption, good stability on snow, lateral grip on ice, and how the car moved on asphalt.

Cons: mediocre handling and comfort, satisfactory cross-country ability on snow.

Pirelli products are tested only in harsh weather, as they have to "work" on uneven, icy and snowy surfaces.

Positive reviews: about acceleration, braking and handling in snow and ice. You can brake quickly on melted snow asphalt.

Disadvantages: Loss of grip when cornering, loud noise from tires, not short enough to evaluate "Excellent" braking distance on a surface without water.

In the manufacture of tires, a special composition of the mixture is used, taking into account the especially cold winter climate... The ContiIceContact is an all-rounder suitable for both "passenger cars" and off-road vehicles.

Positive sides: quick braking on ice, no complaints about handling, on a snowy road and a dry roadbed, you can quickly accelerate and brake.

Cons: not reference slashplaning resistance.

1. Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8

Having passed the rigorous 2015-2016 winter studded tire test, this set of tires has earned unanimous approval from both Russian and Finnish test teams. Car enthusiasts can choose any radius of this tire: R13, R14, R15, R16, R17, R18, R19 and R20.

Advantages: a huge number of studs (190 for 205/55 R16). The addition of special additives to the rubber made it possible to reduce the weight of the tire. There are no problems with handling on a track with melted snow, on frozen and snowy surfaces. Short braking distances on wet and dry asphalt surfaces.

Disadvantages: noise.

Winter tire test method

Tested 8 studded models for acceleration and braking in snow and ice conditions. Also, rides were made on wet and dry asphalt, and slashplaning resistance tests (slipping of the car's wheels on a mash of water and snow) were carried out.

The magazine "Behind the wheel" studied 10 sets of the most demanded by consumers winter tires(175/65 R14) at a price not exceeding 3700 rubles apiece. The main thing for the experts of the edition was the price-quality ratio.

By using Mercedes-Benz S-class found out how they "behave" on the road: winter tires - "Scandinavians" with studs, non-studded "auto shoes" for severe winters of the Scandinavian type and non-studded tires of the European type. The most important acceleration and deceleration took place in a huge hangar. At the start, an anti-slip system was used, when braking - anti-lock braking system, and on a winding track, handling was supported by a dynamic stabilization system.

Test World Team held winter tire test 2015 outdoors and indoors. In the beginning, the time for which the car will pass the circle was recorded. From quality tires(and 25 kits were tested) required fast acceleration, high lateral grip and short braking distances. Test pilots then gave good and bad impressions of each model. Additionally, reviews were collected on how a car with different tires maintains a given direction of travel.

For most vehicle owners, one of the determining factors when choosing a new set of tires is the results of the models they like in comparison tests. This fact prompts various independent testing organizations and specialized publications to conduct, which, in accordance with established testing standards, help to identify the best, safest models on the market.

The 2018/2019 winter season is fast approaching, which means that it won't be superfluous to find out which of the specialized winter tires provide the maximum degree of reliability on winter surfaces.

The first article in our series of publications on the best winter tires of the 2017-2018 season according to the test results is devoted to studded models, designed to operate in the harshest conditions of the coldest season.

Winner

By the beginning of the 2017/2018 winter season, a total of 36 models of winter studded tires produced under 26 brands were in the field of view of testers. With the seemingly intense competition, it was not difficult to determine an unambiguous leader - this is a model that in four cases out of five rose to the top step of the podium.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 tread pattern

Tests of studded winter tires for SUVs are extremely rare, but even in them, tires were able to limit the encroachments of other models in the first place in the overall standings.

Leadership group

The company to the winner in the first places in the final test ratings was made up of a whole group of models:

  • Continental IceContact 2
  • Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic
  • Hankook Winter i * Pike RS + W419D
  • Gislaved Nord * Frost 200
  • Michelin X-Ice North 3
  • Pirelli ice zero
  • Nokian nordman 7

Products are distinguished by high test results German concern... These tires, consistently ranked second in winter tests 2016, in 2017 they continued to "bend their line" and even snatched victory from the hands of formidable rivals a couple of times. Continental IceContact 2 SUV tires performed just as well.

Continental IceContact 2 tires

You can also entrust your safety to the regulars of the prize-winning places - tires, which, although they have been produced since 2012, do not intend to give up their positions in the ranking of the best winter studded tires even now.

Goodyear UltraGrip Ice Arctic

The products of South Korean tire manufacturers, the price of which is not as high as that of the competitors mentioned above, deserves increased attention. In two tests out of three, it costs a lot to become a silver medalist.

Note that in the winter tests of studded tires in 2017, the predecessor of the model was noted -. However, her successes at the 15-inch size were not nearly as impressive.

Hankook Winter i * Pike RS W419 tread design

Of the inexpensive studded options, you can pay attention to the tires. Firstly, they are popular with testers, and secondly, they take prizes and, in general, perform very confidently, without falling below average positions in the final ratings.

Gislaved NordFrost 200 tires

The off-road version of the model, the Gislaved Nord * Frost 200 SUV, which finished third in the Tuulilasi test, underlines the success of this development by the subsidiary brand of Continental.
