NEW YORK, April 12 - RIA Novosti, Sergei Belousov. Many Jaguar F-Pace owners had no idea that they had purchased best car in the world. As it became known to RIA Novosti, it was his jury of the annual international award " World car of the Year (World Car Awards) announced the winner. The results of the competition were announced on Wednesday ahead of the opening of the New York Auto Show.

Twice triumphant

In 13 years of the competition, the F-Pace became the second most expensive car to win gold. It can only be considered more expensive executive sedan Lexus LS 460, which won in 2007.

Audi Q5 and Volkswagen Tiguan fought for the first place together with Jaguar F-Pace.

All cars that made it to the final belong to the class of urban crossovers, which is currently considered one of the most popular in the world. The Q5 and Tiguan models all belong to the same concern - german Volkswagen AG, and there, most likely, the results of the competition are doubly upset.

Give two

The World Car of the Year award has five other highly specialized categories. In one of them - "Best Design" - Jaguar F-Pace was also on the list of finalists along with Toyota C-HR and a Mercedes-Benz S-Class convertible and ... won again. It's time to talk about some patterns: at the 2016 award, the Mazda MX-5 Roadster was recognized as the best car in the world, which also came first in the Best Design category. History repeated itself with amazing accuracy.

BMW 5 Series models competed for the title of "Most Luxurious Car of 2017" Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volvo S90 / V90 (S90 and V90 models are included as their names imply different types body - sedan and station wagon, respectively). The winner was the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, for which the most points were given.

The Porsche 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman Roadster and Coupe have been recognized as the Sports Car of the Year, or rather, recognized. Last year, the winner was the Audi R8 coupe, and this year its open audi version The R8 Spyder only made it to the finals. The third finalist (or second loser) of this year was the McLaren 570S supercar.

Invasion of hybrids

Among the greenest cars, the rechargeable hybrid is recognized Toyota Prius Prime, which managed to bypass two electric rivals: the Chevrolet Bolt and Tesla Model X. For Toyota, this is the second victory in a row in this category, in 2016 the Mirai hydrogen car scored.

In 2017, it was first introduced new category awards - "The best city car". Of the three nominees - BMW i3 (94 Ah), Citroen C3 and Suzuki Ignis - the victory went to the German hatchback, which can be either all-electric or hybrid, if the buyer orders it with the "Internal combustion engine" option.

Who chooses and how

The World Car of the Year award has been held annually since 2005, and since 2006 the finalists have been announced at the New York Auto Show. The jury this year included 75 automotive journalists from 23 countries. Russia was represented by four people: Dmitry Barinov, Vladimir Soloviev, Vitaly Tishchenko and Ivan Vladimirov.

The jury selects the winner based on seven criteria: passenger comfort, performance, value, safety, sustainability, market relevance and emotional appeal.

The maximum score in each category is 10. Cars that can compete for the title of the best in the world must be sold in at least five countries and at least two continents. Volkswagen has the most titles (four) (Golf, 2013; up !, 2012; Polo, 2010; Golf, 2009), two each for Audi and Mazda, one each for Lexus, BMW, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota.

JATO has summed up the preliminary results of the world sales of new machines. Registration data for all countries has not yet been collected, but the above analysis based on statistics from 52 of the largest markets allows us to understand the overall picture of the world. So, in 2016, sales increased by 5.6% - to 84.24 million new cars and lightweight commercial vehicles... There are not so many depressed regions on the map: in addition to Russia, demand fell in Asian countries (Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand), as well as in South Africa, Brazil and two european states - the Netherlands and Switzerland. But the world's largest Chinese market grew by 14%!

Toyota leads the rating of car brands, and the gap from Volkswagen is serious: 7.2 and 6.1 million cars, respectively. Of the fifty brands, only nine worsened their results in 2016, with Chinese companies having the most dizzying growth. Russian Lada is in forty-ninth place.

The title of the world bestseller went to the family of Ford F-series pickups (in the title photo): almost a million of these giants were sold in a year! They are mainly bought in the USA (821 thousand), but without the help of other markets there would be no victory. Indeed, in second place with a minimum lag is the "worldwide" Toyota Corolla (953 thousand cars). Next comes Volkswagen Golf (860 thousand), and in fourth place is a purely Chinese compact van (847 thousand), produced by a joint venture between SAIC and GM and sold mainly on the domestic market.

The general vector of development of the world market is the same as in Russia and Europe: buyers are increasingly choosing crossovers and SUVs. Over the past year, their share in the sales structure increased from 25 to 29%: 24.3 million of these cars were sold. Unfortunately, JATO does not share off-road models by class: compact SUVs and hefty frame SUVs mixed into one rating. If we divide SUV-type cars at least into compact, mid-size and full-size, then the market segmentation would look completely different, and the most popular would be the passenger class C +, aka golf class.

Of the three contenders for the title of World Car of the Year, announced in Geneva, the Volvo XC60 crossover was the happiest, overtaking the Mazda CX-5 and Range Rover velar... It is pleasant to note that this car has been on sale in Russia since last year, and readers of the magazine "Za Rulem" and site visitors have already met with it. Moreover, Volvo XC60 won the Behind the Wheel Grand Prix in the Medium premium crossovers". So the choice of 82 members of the world jury from 24 countries of the world coincided with the opinion of our readers. And this fact only confirms the competence of our competitions.

I am sincerely glad for the Swedish brand, which, with the assistance of Chinese investors, surprises the world with interesting and safe cars... In this regard, one more award on behalf of the World Car of the Year looks very symbolic - the title of Automotive Manager of the Year (the nomination has just appeared) was awarded to Hakkan Samuelsson, General Director of the Swedish company. By the way, European automotive journalists awarded their main prize to another Volvo XC40 crossover.

Let me remind you that the World Car of the Year was named: Jaguar F-PACE (2017), Mazda MX-5 (2016), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2015), Audi A3 (2014), Volkswagen Golf (2013), Volkswagen Up! (2012), Nissan Leaf (2011), Volkswagen Polo (2010, Volkswagen Golf (2009), Mazda2 / Mazda Demio (2008), Lexus LS460 (2007), BMW 3-Series (2006), and Audi A6 (2005).

The Audi A8 was the winner in the World Luxury Car category. He bypassed two of his competitors in the VW concern - Porsche cayenne and Porsche panamerawho remained in the lead after summing up the interim results in Geneva.

Note that Audi has received the ninth award in the 14-year history of the World Car of the Year competition. In 2005 the Audi A6 was named the winner of the first competition, in 2014 the Audi A3 became the Car of the Year. Four times audi company won the title of World sport car (2016 - Audi R8 Coupé, 2010 - Audi R8 V10, 2008 - Audi R8, 2007 - Audi RS 4) and twice the World Automotive Design title in 2007 and 2008.

Another prize went to the German automaker in the World Sports Car category. It was the BMW M5 - the fastest of the BMWs, as the Bavarians describe it (acceleration to a hundred in 3.2 s). He prevailed over the graduates and the final japanese Honda Civic type R and Lexus LC 500.

The World Sports Car nomination appeared in 2006. Since then it has been honored: Porsche Boxster Cayman (2017), Audi R8 Coupe (2016), Mercedes-Benz AMG GT (2015), Porsche 911 GTE (2014), Porsche Boxster / Cayman (2013), Porsche 911 (2012). Ferrari 458 Italia (2011), Audi R8 V10 (2010), Nissan gt-r (2009), Audi R8 (2008), Audi RS4 (2007) and Porsche Cayman S (2006).

The 2018 World City Car of the Year is the Volkswagen Polo. By the way, Polo received the title of World Car of the Year in 2010. The city nomination is new, voting is being held only for the second time, the first - last year was won by BMW i3 (94Ah).

The title of World Environmentally Friendly Car was awarded to the Nissan Leaf. In this category, the Japanese traditionally strong in recent years car brands... These are the drivers in the environmental category in previous years: Toyota Prius Prime (2017), Toyota Mirai (2016), BMWi8 (2015) and BMW i3 (2014), Tesla Model S (2013), Mercedes-Benz S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY ( 2012), Chevrolet Volt (2011), Volkswagen BlueMotion (2010), Honda FCX Clarity (2009), BMW 118d Efficient Dynamics (2008), Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec (2007) and Honda Civic Hybrid (2006).

Finally, a prize for best design awarded to Range Rover Velar. A well-deserved victory. I still don't understand how the chief designer of the company, Jerry McGovern, managed to breathe grace and lightness into a car that is in the same class as the UAZ. By the way, in the Grand Prix "Behind the Wheel" Velar won in the category "Large Crossovers.

The Range Rover Velar was a finalist for World Car of the Year. But in terms of design, it turned out to be compelling.

The final vote for the 2018 World Car of the Year award took place today at the New York Auto Show. The start of the competition was given on September 19, 2017 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and was held on the main world events in automotive world... The winners were selected by a jury of 82 professional automotive journalists from 24 countries, including the editor-in-chief of TopGear Russia, Vitaly Tishchenko.

Initially, TOP 10 was chosen from a list of 34 cars from all over the world, and more recently, at the Geneva Motor Show, the three finalists were announced - Mazda CX-5, Range Rover Velar and Volvo XC60. And finally, today the absolute winner was determined - the winner of the title of "World Car of the Year 2018" - it was the Volvo XC60!

“I am delighted to see that our investment in new products is paying off,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and general director Volvo Cars, "We are against tough competition, but this award for the XC60 proves that we at Volvo have found the right combination of design, technology and safety to appeal to customers around the world."

By the way, earlier in March, at the Geneva Motor Show, Håkan Samuelsson was awarded the Automotive Person of the Year award.
