Big test: Jaguar F-Pace, Cadillac XT5, Lexus RX. Why not: test drive Jaguar F-Pace Greetings from the minders

"First, it's beautiful." When you look at the F-Pace, this quote from an old anecdote comes to mind. In the dazzling Cesium Blue signature color, which is a nod to the spectacular C-X17 concept unveiled in 2013 at Frankfurt Motor Show, he's especially good. And it is recognized as one hundred percent, concentrated Jaguar: here are the lights, like the sports car F-Type, here are the vents on the front fenders, and here are the exciting "hips" of the rear fenders. Short overhangs, an embossed bonnet, a strong tailgate slope, a distinctive radiator grille and headlights complete the harmonious look. Nothing extra!

Passengers are "hugged" by the smooth bend of the front panel, which turns into the doors. This design decision provided the crossover with an incredibly comfortable wide "window sill" on which the left hand rests so comfortably. On it there was a place for the window regulator buttons. Some people don't like it, but I'm used to such a decision on the Gelendvagen and it seems to me quite logical. The instrument panel, as it is now, is a 12.3-inch screen with three virtual scales. In addition to the speedometer and tachometer with indicators of engine temperature and fuel level, there is a window on-board computer, but information as on Land rover, there are quite a few. In general, the virtual "tidy" is designed well, very modestly, although the screen resolution allows you to draw something more colorful and voluminous.

Thanks to the long wheelbase, the rear is surprisingly roomy. The knees do not rest on the front seats, the fit is comfortable, but gigantic (no exaggeration) a roof with a panoramic view provides excellent visibility and visually enlarges the space. Yes - the hatch won't open, but guys, let's be honest. How long have you used the hatch? In Moscow, this is a real perversion, because communal services keep the streets so "great" that a bright salon after that is just right to give to dry cleaning, and you have to wash kilograms of sand out of your hair.

The rear seat backrest folds in a 40:20:40 ratio if you need to transport something large (and do it quickly). From the outside, the F-Pace looks so fast that it seems like the rear passengers will have to sit bent over, but no - there is enough headroom. The British claim that this was achieved thanks to the use of magnetic clips for the headliner, which are much more compact than traditional plastic clips. A tricky solution! There are a couple of power outlets for the rear passengers and large pockets in all doors.

By the way, it is worth talking about the body in more detail. The lightweight aluminum architecture of the F-Pace uses more aluminum than any of its competitors - 80%. To reduce weight, the tailgate is made of composite material and the radiator frame and cross member are made of magnesium. The body structure includes advanced high-strength steel alloys, 2,616 rivets, 73 meters of assembly adhesive and 566 weld spots. A third of the aluminum used is RC5754, an alloy created primarily from recycled materials and is a unique development of the company.

The seats are comfortable, but slender people (like me) want to squeeze the lateral support even more.

Sports wheel- heated and clear buttons.

But the boring dashboard disappointed. A car like Jaguar deserves more expressive scales! In "dynamic" mode, the speedometer and tachometer are swapped.

The "washer" of the gear selector is convenient and effectively hides in the tunnel when the ignition is turned off.

See how great the interior looks in the dark! There are 10 backlight colors to choose from.

The front cast aluminum suspension struts have been redesigned to provide the SUV with the necessary ground clearance and suspension travel. The front beams have become stronger and stiffer, and the reinforcement of the body at the attachment points of the subframes has made it possible to modify their attachment points in such a way as to increase the rigidity of the body without increasing its mass. The muscular bonnet is thinner, which also contributes to the reduction in body weight, and its interior has been redesigned to distribute the load more efficiently. It looks like you can't tell - the hood is motionless even on high speed movement.

Suspension of front wheels - double wishbone, rear - multi-link Integral Link. Like the F-Type sports car! The arms are made of aluminum, as are the steering knuckles. The upper suspension mounts are forged aluminum and the lower arm is die-cast aluminum. Interestingly, the springs and shock absorbers are installed separately to achieve optimal distribution of forces. To improve steering precision, a fifth steering rack mount has been added to the body and the rigidity of the subframe mounting components has been increased. The British have adopted adaptive monotube shock absorbers, which respond more easily and quickly to uneven road surfaces compared to traditional twin-tube dampers. The system monitors changes in body position 100 times per second and wheel movements 500 times per second to adjust the damping force for increased comfort. low speeds and handling - at high. The driver can choose a comfortable or dynamic driving mode, in which the algorithm of work changes throttle, gear changes, steering sensitivity and suspension stiffness.

Under the hood of our bright blue Jaguar F-Pace is a 3.0-liter petrol V6 with a Roots-type mechanical twin-vortex turbocharger mounted in a 90-degree camber. Needless to say, this 380 horsepower aluminum engine is also borrowed from the F-Type sports car? Yes, yes, the F-Pace is by no means called a sports crossover. The gearbox is an automatic 8-speed, the drive on the Russian market can only be complete. The gearbox uses hollow shafts and an aluminum alloy housing, as well as a semi-dry crankcase lubrication system with a mechanical pump driven by an intermediate shaft.

For those interested in technology, Jaguar is ready to share a lot of useful information.

The possibilities of all-round cameras are the broadest. You can even display a picture from any camera you choose.

In addition to the sidewalls, the system allows you to control the corners of the body, which is sometimes very useful when parking.

The picture from all cameras is clear and bright.

By default, 100% of the traction is directed to the rear axle, and if necessary (the British say this process takes only 165 milliseconds) is divided between the front and rear wheels in a 50:50 ratio. Transfer case- with a multi-disc hydraulic clutch and chain driven on the front axle. Traction control continuously evaluates the nature of the road surface and determines how much torque to apply to each of the vehicle's wheels by evaluating factors such as travel speed, steering angle and lateral acceleration.

For slippery road surfaces Three driving modes can be selected: snow and ice, wet asphalt and gravel, and deep snow. Do not forget that this is not only a sports car, but also all-wheel drive crossover with a ground clearance of 213 millimeters and entry / exit angles of 25.5 ° and 26.0 °. Of course, the Adaptive Surface Response system, based on Land Rover Terrain Response technology, also has an automatic mode. The F-Pace is even capable of storming water barriers depth of 525 millimeters! It's a pity there was nowhere to check ...

10.2 '' widescreen touchscreen display multimedia system- the largest in the class, which Jaguar is deservedly proud of. The menu has several home screens with widget icons that you can flip through. Contrary to prejudice, the system works without any brakes, and the diagonal of the display allows you to highlight the side panel for displaying contextual information. Comfortable. The Meridian sound system with 11 speakers with a power of 380 W plays quite energetically, it supports the connection of smartphones on iOS and Android, there is a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 10-inch touchscreen menu consists of several pages of application icons.

But the gearbox in the standard mode allows a noticeable hitch during an energetic start, which is successfully treated by transferring to the "dynamic" mode. The brakes work just fine - I do not remember such an impressive deceleration in any crossover. If necessary, the F-Pace stops rooted to the spot, forcing passengers to hang on the belts, and you can only find fault with an overly light brake pedal. The suspension is stiff, but allows for impressive lateral acceleration in corners. But be on the lookout: the F-Pace is a rear-wheel-drive car after all. The more interesting!

So. The Jaguar F-Pace is damn beautiful and charismatic. Yes, he is perfectly controlled, without reservations, but you must admit, they are greeted by clothes. For many buyers, the F-Pace is their first Jaguar. And probably not the last! In the super popular segment of mid-size crossovers, he was not at all a stranger and managed to stake out a place for himself, forcing his regulars to make room. It seems to me, gentlemen, before us is the very rare case when the first pancake is not lumpy.

The whole photo session

The Jaguar F-Pace crossover, becoming the first SUV in the history of this British brand, raised many questions. First of all, will the British be able to maintain the sporty spirit of the brand in it, or will the newcomer turn out to be the technical counterpart of one of the models of the sister Land Rover? For answers, we went to the first test of the car

In fact, questions about the model have arisen even earlier. In particular, it was not entirely clear why Jaguar Land Rover, which for many, many years, demonstratively emphasized the division of its brands into two branches - passenger cars and SUVs - I suddenly decided to create almost internal competition by building an SUV from Jaguar. However, now the idea becomes clear - the brand needs "fresh blood". More precisely, new clients.

Router on wheels

Looking at the brand new Jaguar F-Pace, I can't tell if I like it or not. On the one hand, the car is elegant, balanced, moderately aggressive, with proportions reminiscent of a coupe. On the other hand, some kind of ... rustic, perhaps - in the stream, like other competitors, it does not immediately stand out, there are no unusual stampings on the sides, other complex elements nicknamed "the tinsmith's nightmare." On reflection, I come to the conclusion that this is not bad - artsy cars get bored with time, and classics are always in vogue. A little later, by the way, my feelings are confirmed by the designer who worked on the model. According to him, stylists initially tried to avoid complex elements, but at the same time they tried to preserve recognizable Jaguar lines, silhouette, proportions, details. And they started from ... the sporty F-Type. Perhaps they succeeded in their plans.

In addition, the goal was to make the car practical, and this concept includes a whole range of factors. For example, dynamics and fuel consumption. Thanks to water chamber modeling and 3D technologies, the crossover body has a very low drag coefficient of only 0.34. In part, this was achieved due to the almost flat bottom of the car, which also made it possible to achieve the maximum efficiency of the 213 mm ground clearance. And if, in addition, we add decent angles of entry and exit (25.5 and 26 degrees, respectively), as well as the fact that the designers placed the electronics as high as possible, then we can talk about decent off-road qualities... In particular, the F Pace is not afraid of fords more than half a meter deep.

However, the practicality of a beginner can be manifested in something else. So, the British are focusing on its trunk, which has a width of 1255 mm and 508 liters of volume (if we talk about the Russian version with a "dock" under the floor, in other markets this figure is even more - 650 liters). And also in the spaciousness of the cabin. I am convinced of the latter by sitting in the second row - here, in fact, not too close to three adults. Moreover, there is enough room for both legs and above the head. In addition, the angle of inclination of the backrests can be adjusted, and if it is necessary to increase the volume of the trunk, the backrests are folded in a ratio of 40:20:40. I will add that for the rear passengers in the crossover there is its own dual-zone climate control, as well as a pair of USB connectors or two 12 V sockets. Moreover, F-Pace is able to offer Wi-Fi in the cabin - to a built-in router with a SIM you can connect up to eight devices with the card!

The crossover offers even more comfort and various bonuses to those who are driving in the front. Especially the driver (after all, the British position the car exactly as sport SUV designed to bring joy to driving). Here you have a chair with 14 adjustments (for example, you can hold the lateral support just like you are in a racing car), heated and cooled seats, and the opportunity to order a 12.3-inch HD dashboard, where in the "appendage" (or instead of) 8-inch touch screen "multimedia" can display any information - from all the usual speedometer with a tachometer to the navigation map. By the way, the navigator's tips, as well as the speed value, can be displayed on the glass in front of the driver - there is a laser projector for this. True, he did not impress me: the symbols are not very clear, slightly "smeared" (at least if the day is sunny). Another complaint is that the electronics that display prompts on the screen don't always read the curbside signs. You can already enter the area with a speed limit of 40 km / h, and multimedia still allows you to develop up to 80 km / h. However, this is already self-indulgence - the driver himself must follow the signs.

As for other parameters, the fit, and the view in all directions, and the ergonomics, and the adjustment of the steering column, and the density of the seat padding allow you to operate the crossover with comfort and a sense of security. The latter is also facilitated by the equipping of almost all modern systems of active and passive safety - monitoring of blind spots, warning of leaving the lane and returning to it, adaptive cruise control, 360-degree view with video cameras, warning of driver fatigue, automatic parking, emergency braking, including in front of pedestrians ... In general, this crossover is almost an autopilot.

Greetings from the minders

In Russia, the Jaguar F-Pace will be offered in four versions. All with four-wheel drive and an 8-band ZF automatic transmission. The main differences are in the motors. At the top of the range is a V-shaped petrol "six", and in two versions: with a capacity of 340 or 380 hp. (the torque is the same - 450 Nm). A more productive version of the engine, which accelerates the car to "hundreds" in 5.5 seconds, is provided for the limited series First Edition, which they decided to release in the first year of sales. The 340-horsepower crossover has only slightly worse dynamics - from 0 to 100 km / h, it can accelerate in 5.8 seconds. The rest of the cars are almost identical, including in terms of fuel consumption (8.9 l / 100 km) and a maximum speed limited to 250 km / h.

Next come two diesel modifications: a 3-liter V6 with 300 hp. and a 2-liter 180-horsepower four-cylinder. And here there are already more differences. So, if a 300-horsepower diesel engine can accelerate a car to 100 km / h in 6.2 s, and its maximum speed is 241 km / h, then a less powerful car shows, respectively, 8.7 s and 208 km / h. But it is more economical - on average, it should spend 5.3 liters of diesel fuel for a "hundred" run, while a more powerful unit is already 6 liters. However, during the test, I did not come close to the cherished indicators - on all modifications they were about one and a half times higher than stated. Probably because I tested cars in hard modes.

This happens infrequently, but I managed to test all four versions, and in decreasing order: starting the first day with the top 380-horsepower, the second day ended at the wheel of the "youngest", carrying 180 "horses" under the hood. However, the impressions of the modifications were not lined up according to this ranking. If we evaluate the work of the "engine - transmission" combination, then, perhaps, most of all I liked the 3-liter diesel engine. The engine, which has 700 Nm of torque, picks up the car like a feather, while the 8-range "automatic" almost instantly reacts to the "gas", and you do not even notice how the almost two-ton SUV shoots out as if from a sling. Whether you need to make a sharp overtaking or take off uphill - it makes no difference: the crossover rushes forward like a man possessed.

But for gasoline engines, the gearbox settings are somewhat different - before the car accelerates, it needs a second or a half to "think", and only then such an F-Pace will jump, as if stung. As for the initial diesel engine, 2-liter, it is quite predictably the least of all - agility, power. But if you sit in such a car right away, and not after more powerful versions, then you will have enough dynamics, agility, and a reserve of strength for your eyes. Therefore, put me before the choice of which modification of the crossover from Jaguar to buy, I would take the 180-horsepower one, which has such an important trump card as a clearly lower level of maintenance costs (fuel, insurance, taxes).

Almost cardiology

Still, the biggest surprise the first Jaguar crossover brought me was in the discipline of ride performance. How is he managed! As if this is not an almost five-meter machine, but a May bumblebee that burst out into the open spaces of the meadows - impetuous, nimble, maneuverable. Perhaps the only thing that reminds us of an SUV here is a rather high, "commanding" position at the wheel (you can't lower the seat in a lightweight way). Otherwise, the F-Pace is practically a sedan on the track. And the sedan is really sporty.

The test drive of this car was carried out in Montenegro, and this country really turned out to be extremely suitable for such tests. Firstly, it is replete with mountain serpentines, and even those that I would call "serpentine". Well, or at least "serpentine serpentine". This is when the route on the navigator screen looks more like a cardiogram with sharp corners of hairpin turns, between which sometimes no more than two hundred meters. Secondly, there are almost deserted, but extremely "incendiary" secondary single-lane roads, where, if you slightly press the "gas" pedal, adrenaline will almost spill out of you.

And on these routes, the "Briton" proved to be just brilliant: the crossover instantly reacts to the smallest movement of the steering wheel, but does it smoothly, clearly; it enters corners so that you understand the essence of the expression "string bends", while in the bends themselves, a fairly high off-road vehicle practically does not "fall" - there are almost no rolls and does not slip into a skid (thanks to the intelligent all-wheel drive system IDD, capable of 165 -millisecond agility to redistribute the moment between the axles). And on a straight line, the car stands confidently, reliably. It’s a pity, we didn’t manage to check it in the rut - during the test we didn’t find one. But there were enough potholes and cracks, and here the comfort differs depending on the diameter of the wheels - if on 20-inch disks with which they were equipped diesel versions, canvas defects are not noticeable, then on 22-inch they are already noticeable, especially on the second row.

However, there is still no need to talk about discomfort - it is not in vain that the British have thrown so much money and effort into innovative suspensions ("double-lever" in front, Integral Link at the rear), and into the Adaptive Dynamics system, which tracks body movements 100 times per second, and wheel movements - five times more often, and into the Torque Vectoring dynamic torque distribution system, familiar from the Jaguar F-Type sports car, but adapted for a crossover. As, however, and the electric power steering EPAS, used on passenger cars brand. Of course, the body structure of the F-Pace, which is 80% aluminum, makes a colossal contribution to the characteristics of the car (none of the "classmates" have this).

Finally, I must say that for all its sportiness, this car is not bad at all, and where there has never been asphalt (it is not for nothing that its closest "relatives" SUVs Land Rover). F-Pace can conquer steep slopes and move off them almost vertically, overcome rivers, ride on huge boulders, get out of quicksand (and, apparently, snow), move on slippery wet grass and soggy clay (I was convinced of this during the test). In a word, to do everything that Russians appreciate in cars. By the way, sales of the new model in our country will start in June. Dealers offer the most affordable diesel 180-horsepower version for 3,193,000 rubles. The top modification of the limited series First Edition with a capacity of 380 hp. can be ordered for 5,048,000 rubles.

Our photo editor is incredibly happy. It's not often that cars of the same color come across on the test. Yes, not just one, but a white one. Yes, white really reflects reality best of all, and it is in it that cars look exactly as the designers intended them. This is only later, by painting the car in different colors, you can visually increase or decrease the size, make it stricter or, conversely, add lightness, or you can completely veil the flaws by pouring a "chameleon" on the car. But white is white - in it the design idea is naked to the limit.

Often this limit is the corporate style. So the artists are trying, they go out of their way so that each new model is unique in its own way, but at the same time has a common style. And oh, what a pity in this vein for the designers of Mercedes-Benz. With such an abundance of models, making something memorable, and simply beautiful, is quite difficult. Nevertheless, they somehow succeed in this from time to time. Not always perfect, of course, but in most cases interesting specimens appear from under their electronic pen. And the Mercedes Benz GLC is a prime example of this. In this car, both corporate style and individuality get along well. And he himself looks spectacular both against the background of the villa and against the background of a sand pit.

The Jaguar artists were much more fortunate. First, by itself the lineup this company is not as large as Mercedes-Benz, only five models. And secondly, there is only one crossover in this line - he himself. And the fact that he was drawn with great care is immediately evident. To blunder is to kill. Kill the interest in Jaguar crossovers once and for all. So they drew every facet, every curl, creating a unique and unique style of the car, while not forgetting about the pedigree. As a result, the Jaguar F-Pace really compares favorably with crossovers from other companies, and from Mercedes-Benz in particular. If we shift the associative array to the marine theme, then the F-Pace against the background of the GLC is like a sports yacht against the background of a pleasure yacht. They are both roads, both are beautiful, but the contours are a little more dynamic, and the sails on the sports one are noticeably larger.

And the sail, more precisely, the engine power, Jaguar really has a little more than Mercedes-Benz. (We specially took for the test non-top configurations of cars, and we were very interested in how they behave when under the hood they are not inflated to the limit petrol versions, and diesels. Are these humble laborers able to provide the cars with the level of comfort and dynamics that you expect, since you pay such money.) With a similar volume of engines, the diesel power of the Jaguar F-Pace is 180 hp. pp., and the Mercedes Benz GLC - 170. But the difference in 10 "horses" practically does not affect the dynamic characteristics of cars. Moreover, less powerful Mercedes bypasses Jaguar in such positions as acceleration from zero to hundreds and maximum speed... However, you can only notice this difference when you take a set of measurements in ideal conditions. In practice, the machines turned out to be identical in these characteristics. In any case, we did not manage to notice the difference, and "drove", as they say now, the cars are exactly the same.

But the fact that the noise insulation of the Mercedes Benz GLC is better was impossible not to notice. Here you can quite calmly talk to both the front passenger and those sitting in the back. In the Jaguar, there is also not a lot of noise in the front, but in order to communicate with the inhabitants of the second row, you have to strain your voice or they have to move to the front row. The noise in the F-Pace is surprisingly more localized in the second row of seats. This is probably due to the fact that there is more space in the second row in the Jaguar F-Pace, and the sound waves have a place to roam. A person with an average height can literally slide down the seat and at the same time barely rest against the front backrests. In the GLC, there is a little less space in the second row, but at the expense of more vertical landing there is enough space here.

The panoramic sunroof in this configuration is an option and not a cheap option. However, it is much more comfortable with him in the cabin.

Visually, the Jaguar's interior is modest. And although the stiffness characteristic of cars from Foggy Albion is present here, it still looks much simpler than that of Mercedes. However, let's not forget that our test was not the most expensive version of the F-Pace, and judging by what we saw on the more expensive cars, they differ significantly from ours, almost basic. The GLC was not the most sophisticated, but the interior looked much more expensive, primarily due to the tiered design of the dashboard. It is she who creates a feeling of delight that visits everyone who first looks into the interior of the car. It is only later that you begin to understand the large number of keys under the air duct deflectors, look for the gearbox selector and wonder why the driver's seat, unlike the passenger one, has a manual longitudinal adjustment, and not an electric one. But at first, the interior is simply enchanting.

By the way, about the gear selector. The Jaguar F-Pace is also unconventional. Instead of the usual handle, there is a washer on the dashboard. It moves out of its nest as the engine starts, and by rotating it, you put the 8-speed gearbox into familiar modes. On the GLC, the gearbox is, by the way, 9-speed, which you find out about when you start fiddling with gears with paddle shifters. It is almost impossible to count how many gears the automatic gear shifted without your participation, because it happens smoothly. On the Jaguar, gears snap off one after the other without any discomfort, and just like the GLC, the F-Pace has the ability to manually play gears.

Both vehicles allow you to customize the operating modes of the engine, transmission and steering. To do this, on the beard of the center console, each of them has a corresponding button or wheel. These modes are really felt. But the "comfort" is still more comfortable with the GLC. This primarily concerns the suspension. Jaguar, even in a relaxed state, is somewhat tougher than its opponent. This is understandable, because the shock absorber settings for the F-Pace in this configuration are constant, but for the GLC they mechanically vary depending on the road situation. True, this remark is true only for asphalt. On a broken lane, both cars show a clear dislike for this type of coverage. And nevertheless, on the sand or light off-road on these crossovers you can ride, all-wheel drive and ground clearance allow you to do this. At the same time, the F-Pace has more ground clearance: 213 mm versus 181 for the GLC.

Visually, the trunks are similar in volume, but in numbers, Mercedes-Benz has more. Under the floor, the Jaguar has a dock, the GLC has a repair kit

What should you choose in the end? We do not undertake to give an unambiguous answer. With similar technical characteristics and very similar consumer qualities rivals are still representatives of different automotive schools. Judging by the test, the surrounding people still paid more attention to Jaguar than to Mercedes-Benz. And if for you the desire to attract the eyes is the main argument, then, of course, the F-Pace is your option. On the other hand, those who do not strive to particularly stand out, but are used to comfort, will be quite satisfied with the consumer qualities that the GLC will offer.

The seats are roughly similar to the Jaguar, but there are more adjustments here, and therefore you can get a lot more comfortable

The instrument panel is analog, but this does not make it obsolete. In addition, in more expensive trim levels, it looks even more interesting.

The left steering column switch, by tradition, is responsible for virtually everything

Although the back seat is slightly less than in the Jaguar, but due to the vertical landing it is not felt

The interior looks rich

Driving

Thanks to the adaptive suspension, the vehicle adapts better to road conditions, and this, in turn, has a positive effect on controllability. The dynamics are similar to those of the Jaguar.

Salon

The interior looks richer than the F-Pace. Both the quality of the materials and the design make it such. There is no disappointment from what he saw

Comfort

The suspension is a little softer, the sound insulation is a little better, and all these "slightly" make the car more comfortable than the competitor. In any case, from the perspective of a passenger. And the driver's seat is more comfortable

Security

ABS, ESP, HHC, ASR, 6 airbags

Price

Undoubtedly, it is quite high, but let's not forget that this is a Mercedes-Benz.

Our verdict

The debut of Jaguar in the crossover class can be considered quite successful. The F-Pace is indeed quite an interesting and most importantly memorable car. Its consumer qualities are quite comparable to those of competitors, which is clearly proved by our comparison with the Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Cars are provided by the following companies: Jaguar F-Pace - Jaguar Land Rover Russia, MercedesBenz GLC - MercedesBenz Wagner.

Car premieres are very different. Some enter the market, live, leave, and no one notices them. But there are others. They have not yet appeared, they have not even been announced yet, and everyone is already talking, whispering, looking for spy shots. Then they chase prototypes and greedily seek out grains of information. This is also the first SUV in the Jaguar family. For almost a year the world has been making noise about him, although he has not even seen it yet. They were content with only a photo of a camouflaged pre-production sample. Then the technique intrigued. But as soon as the first photo of the F-Pace appeared without disguise, for a while everyone forgot about what was under the hood. The car is breathtaking.

The first feline SUV turned out to be a worthy representative of its kind. And only Jaguar chief designer Ian Callum knows how much pain it cost his team. He likes to say that Jaguar's insistence looks like it's going 100 miles an hour even when it's standing. And the trouble with an SUV is that even when it goes 100 miles an hour, it looks like it’s standing still. The reason is the high ground clearance, large waist line, massive contours - in a word, the proportions of the SUV body.

Therefore, I had to work great. The lines were laconic, simple and clean. Beautiful stampings were made on the sidewall, which conceal the massiveness of the profile. The line along the bottom of the body was also drawn in such a way that it visually conceals the clearance to the ground. Every detail tried to give the car more sportiness, visually expand the body and press it to the ground.

But they really achieved the effect of sportiness in the cabin. The high center tunnel, deep seating position and the layout of the controls lend a sporty feel. Not a shadow of the feeling that you are sitting in high auto... But the height of the Jaguar F-Pace is 1.65 meters. The car looks really harmonious and individual. And what can be said for sure is that soon the Jaguar brand will be associated with this car in our latitudes. After all, the novelty should account for up to half of the brand's sales. And in our country, we can assume all 80%.

The Jaguarists have been developing the F-Pace for a long time. A significant part of the time was spent on fine-tuning the running characteristics. Evil tongues say that after leaving Porsche macan, the Jaguarians, who already had the F-Pace almost ready for release, rolled up their sleeves and again began to improve the chassis and behavior of the car. Did it work out? Still would!

The body is full of aluminum (80%), which was not boiled, but glued and riveted in an aviation fashion. They started doing this on XK.

To outrun the eminent German competitors, it was necessary to try. The body is 80% made of aluminum. The places of its connections were not boiled, but glued and riveted. Jaguar has mastered this aviation technology with the XK over a decade ago. The settings were tormented day and night. Let's see what came of it.

The new Jaguar model is offered with three engine options: two diesel and one petrol. Diesel units 2.0 and 3.0 liters with turbocharging, and 3.0-liter gasoline engine with compressor. All motors are modern and advanced, but the importer was not afraid to offer all these units for our market, which is nice. Moreover, choosing one of them is not such an easy task.

The base version is offered with a 2.0-liter 180 hp turbodiesel. with rear-wheel drive only, and with mechanical box gear. I don’t think we will be able to see at least one such car in Kiev. It's even a bit of a pity. After all, it is this modification that is the most economical in the line. She needs only 4.9 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. And the acceleration dynamics are not bad at all - 8.9 s to 100 km. But F-Pace will be delivered to our country only with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission.

But the first on the test was not the basic version at all, but a kind of premiere cocktail of the very best. The fact is that the model has several trim levels: Pure, Prestige, Portfolio, R-Sport and S. And there is a special version dedicated to the release of the model - First Edition. The easiest way to recognize it is by the black window frames and 22-inch wheels. Twenty two! As I saw, I shuddered. Tires - 265/40 R22!

The 22-inch wheels are pretty darn good. But in Kiev, I would not dare to ride them. It's just a pity to ruin. After them 20s are like soft slippers.

Well, let's try like this beast with a 3.0-liter compressor engine rated at 380 hp. rides. By the way, such a high power can only be obtained from a car in the S or First Edition version. In the rest, it develops 340 hp.

The first seconds of engine operation are quiet. The six is balanced. Yes, and we leave on the roads of Montenegro, where the test for the press is taking place, from the ferry. Slow first hundreds of meters and a tunnel ahead. You open the window, two or three steps down and give the gas, which is not allowed 50 km / h. The growl of a terrible but well-fed beast. And in the tunnel, this sound is reflected and amplified. Even if it's not the brutal 5-liter V8 that XJ and sister Land Rover have in their arsenal. The sound of the six is more refined and less primitive. More gentlemanly gloss in him, or something. And from the point of view of efficiency, it is in solid pluses. Lightweight, economical and gives not only good traction and acceleration dynamics, but also handling. After all, there is no loss of weight, which means inertia.

To digest the 380 horsepower that this engine easily generates, you will need four-wheel drive without fail. Especially when driving along a winding mountain road. Under normal conditions, the all-wheel drive transmission, in which Land Rover actively participated, transfers all the momentum to the rear axle. But in 165 milliseconds, a multi-plate clutch with electronic control can transfer up to half the moment to the wheel apron. Add to this the presence of a torque vectoring system that juggles traction in an arc of a turn so as to twist the car more efficiently and you get a 4.7-meter predator from the genus of kittens, which directly asks for winding roads. The car is amazingly fast, reckless and enjoyable. You get used to it in minutes. And the paddle shifters, cut out by the knot of a piece of aluminum, are easy and pleasant to manipulate with 8 gears.

Although, if you are too lazy to switch anything yourself, you can press the button once on the center console, flipping the Jaguar Drive Control system from normal to dynamic mode, and scrolling the gearbox control washer to the Sport position. Then you can blame the full program and not strain at all. Although, knowing that in Montenegro outside the city the speed limit is 80 km / h, I still had to strain.

The instrument cluster is a huge screen. The left segment doesn't seem to be a very efficient use of space. You can choose the design of the instrument cluster ...

... or you can switch to the huge navigation screen.

What is the F-Pace all-wheel drive capable of, other than driving on the asalt? Wait. Are you sure you need more? Probably no more needs than the owner of the top Range rover knowing that his car is passing a ford a meter deep. Do you still need it? Then listen. The guys from Land Rover Expirience spoke about the possibilities of the F-Pace all-wheel drive. Who, if not they, know what a four-wheel drive car should be able to do.

Ground clearance of 213 mm, the presence of the Hill Descent Assist and the All Surface Progress Control (ASPC) off-road cruise control for ultra-low speeds make it possible to go down a slope of 45 degrees! If only there was enough grip. The rest of the F-Pace is on the shoulder. And kneading dirt on such a car is bad manners.

In the top versions, the rear passengers have their own climate control unit and heated seats.

However, the F-Pace should not be perceived as just a bag for a driver with racer ambitions. After all, there are quieter engines, and the car itself is very practical. Dach is there! This is the most practical Jaguar of all time. Rear seats perhaps the most spacious in the class due to the large wheelbase of 2.87 m. And the trunk of 650 liters leaves no reason for reproach. The clearance is huge. What else do sports punishment need for every day?

A spacious trunk of 650 liters is practical. But in the version with "dokatka" it decreases.

Out of a pair of diesels, we first managed to try the 3.0-liter one. It is quiet, but its strength is only slightly less than that of a gasoline engine (300 hp), and traction is even a third higher (700 Nm). Yes, and acceleration to a hundred in 6.6 with a slow one can not be called. But there is no sharpness and crazy roar in it. He seems to be woven from restraint and strength. A minimum of ostentatious and enormous opportunities.

But I'm sure that most of the cars will be sold with a 2.0-liter diesel engine(180 HP, 340Nm), automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. With such an engine, the F-Pace is agile, economical and demonstrates concern for the buyer's wallet. Average fuel consumption is 5.3 l / 100 km, and in the city - 6.2 l / 100 km.

Outcome

There are only a couple of days left before the presentation of the F-Pace in Ukraine, but the prices are already known. And let the competition be a dime a dozen, but it seems to me that it is better to hurry after your SUV with a cat on the radiator grille. The chances to seem trivial on such a car are zero. But a lot of driving pleasure is guaranteed.

A strange feature of all jaguars is the hanging gas pedal. All competitors have it comfortable outdoor and the British persist.

The model is offered with a transponder bracelet that helps to open the car even without a key. It is enough to attach the bracelet to the letter J on the back door ...

The rubber bracelet looks very prosaic and is unlikely to become an element of the high style of its owner. Rather, he will help to take something out of the car when jogging in the morning. True, for this, the key must be in the car.

The bracelet is dustproof and waterproof. This was emphasized by simply throwing a bracelet into a bucket of water next to each of the test cars. Once upon a time, commander's and Japanese electronic watches were sold in bazaars.

Body and comfort

Rigid and lightweight aluminum body. Ideal weight distribution along the axes 50:50. Very expressive appearance. Even on the largest 22-inch wheels, the car maintains a good balance between ride and suspension composure. The small buttons for switching modes on the central tunnel are difficult to grope. On the instrument cluster, a third of the screen is used without much benefit.

Powertrain and dynamics

A fairly light top-end gasoline engine, powerful and charismatic. Colossally high-torque 6-cylinder diesel engine. The base 2.0-liter turbo diesel provides good dynamics thanks to the advanced 8-speed automatic transmission. There is only one gasoline engine and it is very powerful. For lovers gasoline units actually left no choice.

Finance and equipment

The cost of the model is at the level of competitors. The basic version with a 2.0 liter engine (180 hp), all-wheel drive and automatic transmission costs UAH 1,501,560. The equipment list corresponds to the class. This is the first generation of Jaguar's SUVs and is likely to develop so-called childhood illnesses.

Jaguar F-Pace (Jaguar F-Pace)- 5-door crossover class "K1". World premiere The production version of the model took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015.

Power plants at the time of launch: 2.0-liter diesel with 180 hp. paired with mechanics (four-wheel / rear-wheel drive) or automatic with AWD; 2.0-liter petrol with a capacity of 240 hp. (AWD / RWD); 3.0-liter diesel engine rated at 300 hp. with a gun and AWD; the familiar 3.0-liter petrol (340 hp and 380 hp) with automatic transmission and AWD. The latter is able to overcome the 96 km / h mark in 5.1 seconds.

The Jaguar F-Pace is built on a modular aluminum chassis common to the XE and XF sedans. According to the "passport" data, even the most powerful F-Pace with a V6 engine weighs less than 2 tons: 1,861 kg. Despite the fact that the Jaguar crossover came out larger than its main competitors: Mercedes GLC and the Porsche Macan. The volume of the trunk of a "practical sports car" - this is how the crossover is called in Jaguar - is equal to 650 liters.

The interior of the new F-Pace is decorated in the spirit of modern Jaguars. The interior of the car accommodates five seats... The dashboard is a single large (12.3 inches diagonal) LCD display. A second screen, ranging in size from 8 to 10-plus inches, tops the center console.
