How to do it?

The subsequent increase in the coefficient is extremely undesirable, since it quite often leads to a malfunction of various transmission elements.

Where is it used?

Nowadays, on modern cars, both a cross-axle differential lock and a center-axle element lock are used. Moreover, in four-wheel drive vehicles it is often not produced, as this can negatively affect controllability.

Blocking is carried out automatically or forcibly. The latter option provides for the mandatory delivery of a command from the driver, in connection with which it is also called manual. Automatic or electronic differential lock is performed using specialized technical devices.

Why is this needed?

When is it better to use it?

The most effective pneumatic differential lock on UAZ, like other similar systems, becomes in those conditions when there is too much difference in wheel traction. Thus, the maximum blocking efficiency is achieved when one wheel is completely torn off from the supporting surface, which is a fairly common occurrence when moving over various ridge obstacles.

It is also worth noting the fact that the hydraulic differential lock on the UAZ provides much more high cross-country ability when there is an uneven weight distribution between the axle wheels, for example when the wheels on one side are in a deep mud rut while the other side is still riding higher on a dry surface. Accordingly, the smaller the difference in traction between the axle wheels, the less effective the use of blocking will be.

It is mainly blocked only if there is a very significant difference in the traction force of the wheels of the rear and front axles... For example, when, in the process of turning the car, a wheel is in a ditch with water, while all the rest remain on dry terrain. In standard conditions, it often happens that when towing one wheel, the traction force of all the others is significantly reduced.

What do you need to know?

Experienced travelers have an extremely simple rule - before going off-road, you need to turn on the lock center differential, while the rear interwheel element is blocked when overcoming any sections of heavy off-road, while the front - only in exceptional cases and only when straight-line movement is provided.

At the same time, you need to correctly understand that the "SPRUT" differential lock on the UAZ, like other systems, does not increase overall strength adhesion of the wheels to the road surface, but only provides a certain wheel with the opportunity to fully use this force to create the necessary tractive effort.

Forced

Such blocking is carried out mainly when using a special cam clutch, which provides a fairly rigid connection of the body of this element with one of the axle shafts. The cam clutch is closed using a specialized hydraulic, mechanical, pneumatic or electric drive.

The mechanical drive provides the combination of cables, levers, or a complete system that includes both of these elements. In this case, the forced differential lock on the UAZ can be carried out by the driver by moving the lever to correct position while the vehicle is stationary.

IN hydraulic drive includes working and main cylinders. A specialized pneumatic cylinder is used as an actuating element of such a drive. An electronic differential lock, that is, a forced type using an electric drive, provides for the use electronic engine to close the clutch. The lock is turned on by pressing a separate button located on dashboard car.

Hard forced blocking is used in order to ensure easier passage of difficult sections, and after that they must be turned off. Basically, it is customary to use it when a homemade differential lock is carried out on UAZ and other all-wheel drive vehicles.

Self-locking

The limited-slip differential is a kind of the golden mean between a completely free differential and a fully locked differential, as it realizes the possibilities of both options.

In total, there are two main types of such devices: blocking from wheel difference and torque. The latter include a disc differential, a viscous clutch system and an electronic lock. Blocking is carried out depending on the difference in torque.

The installation of the differential lock on the UAZ is carried out by installing the simplest disk symmetric device with the addition of one or two packages friction discs... A certain part of such disks has a rigid connection with the device body, while the other is connected to the semi-axis.

The principle of operation, which is used in the disc limited slip differential, is entirely based on the force generated due to the difference in rotation speeds of each axle shaft.

In the process, the axle shaft and differential housings will rotate at exactly the same speed, and the friction pack will rotate as a single element. If you increase the rotational speed of a particular axle shaft, the part of the disks that corresponds to it will also rotate faster, and friction force will appear between the disks, preventing the possibility of increasing the rotational speed. The torque on the free wheel is continuously increasing, which ensures partial blocking of the differential on the UAZ "Patriot" or any other car.

The compression ratio of the friction discs can be variable or fixed, and each option requires its own devices. The installation of a differential lock on a UAZ with a fixed one is implemented using special reasons for constant stiffness, while a variable degree is provided through the use of a hydraulic drive.

The disc differential is used as an inter-wheel differential in most sports cars, as well as in vehicles with off-road vehicles.

Viscous clutch

This element is a set of perforated discs located close to each other, a certain part of which is rigidly connected to the differential housing, while the rest are combined with the drive shaft. All discs are housed in a sealed case completely filled with a viscous silicone fluid.

In the process of rotation of the differential housing with the drive shaft at the same speed, the block of installed discs will rotate as a whole, and if the rotation speed of the drive shaft increases, the corresponding part of the discs will also rotate faster, simultaneously mixing the filled silicone fluid. The very same liquid, thus, gradually hardens, which ensures the differential lock on the UAZ "Patriot" and other similar vehicles. When the equality of speeds is restored, the fluid loses its properties again and the clutch is unlocked.

Due to the fact that such an element itself is characterized by rather large dimensions, it is customary to use it mainly only to ensure the locking of the center differential. Also, the use of a viscous clutch is often found independently, when it is connected to an automatic all-wheel drive system.

Due to the peculiarities of its design, the viscous clutch is characterized by inertia, as well as a tendency to excessive heating, and in the case of braking, there is a conflict with the anti-lock braking system... That is why, regardless of whether the automatic or forced differential lock is installed on the UAZ, the use of this option is not recommended and is practically not used anywhere, with rare exceptions.

Electronic

Electronic locking is a separate function of the dedicated anti-slip system... Its implementation is carried out through automatic braking a skidding wheel, which is accompanied by an active increase in the traction force on it. As a result, torque starts to increase on the wheel with more effective grip.

Worm

A worm limited-slip differential allows for fully automatic locking, depending on the difference between the torque on the axle shaft and the housing. In case of wheel slip, accompanied by a decrease in torque, the worm differential is locked, followed by a redistribution of torque to free wheel... In this case, in this case, partial blocking is ensured, the degree of which directly depends on the total amount of torque reduction.

Known systems of this type include Qualife and Torsen. The designs of such differentials represent a full-fledged planetary gearbox, which consists of worm gears, while the leading ones can be located perpendicularly or parallel to the axle shafts.

The main feature that distinguishes it from analogs is that it can make other gears rotate, but at the same time it cannot rotate from others. The worm gear wedges, and this property is used to provide a partial differential lock. You can install such a system without outside help. Homemade differential locks on UAZ and other cars using worm gear systems can be used for both interaxle and crosswheel devices.

For testing, we took four locks: the Torsen screw system (we have already written about it more than once in our magazine), the no less well-known cam made in Nizhny Novgorod, which has become, perhaps, the most popular among the "uazovods", the forced Sprut with a pneumatic drive and the newfangled DAK (Krasikov's automatic differential), about which there have been a lot of rumors lately, but almost no one has seen it in their eyes. It was all the more interesting to hold all this in hands and see how it works.

Cam (armored) interlocks (from RUB 10,500)
The UAZ inherited the limited-slip cam differentials from the armored personnel carrier. Only there they performed the work of an interaxle, not an interwheel differential. Pros - simplicity of design, availability of installation, low price. Cons - low efficiency and the need to gas to work.

The stand on which we tested the work of the locks is made as follows. The rear axle from "UAZ" is mounted on a workbench, its gearbox turns a large electric motor. Instead of wheels, pulleys are put on drums, each of which is connected to its own electric motor by means of a belt traction. We turn on the main motor - the pulleys-wheels begin to rotate. We supply electricity to the motor that controls the pulley - we simulate the braking of one wheel. In this case, a conventional differential without blocking begins to turn the second, free wheel twice as fast. What happens if a lock is installed in the bridge?

"Sprut" (14,000 rubles)
Forced locks - the best option to overcome obstacles. First, because these are really blocking - there is no differentiation. Secondly, full control: you need - turned it on, not needed - turned it off. Until now, they were produced in small batches for UAZs and were not in great demand due to the complexity of the installation (it was necessary to cook the bridge) and the presence of a self-made semi-axle in the design (where can I find it then?). The new Sprut pneumatic lock is completely similar to the Australian ARB and, in theory, is devoid of the aforementioned disadvantages. Easy to install, and cheap.

FIST ILLUSION
We decided to test the cam lock first. Which is actually not a lock at all, but a limited slip differential. This was confirmed by the tests: when braking one wheel, the second continued to spin, and the wheel that we braked almost immediately stopped completely. Measurements showed that the force on it increased by 3.06 kg.m. What does this mean in practice? If you hang the car on a diagonal or fall with one wheel into a slippery puddle (or snow, ice), the car will skid helplessly - with a wheel that is on a slippery surface or is suspended. The second wheel, which has good engagement, will be in best case twitch. Such a "blocking" will help only if the difference in engagement is small and the car has a certain power reserve - you will not even know that you could get stuck where you drove if there were ordinary differentials in the bridges of your UAZ.

Screw blocking (14,000 rubles)
Screw limited slip differentials have a large sports history... They are driven by traction, but this is especially convenient in rallying and on the track. However, to overcome obstacles, it is generally strongly discouraged to accelerate. Especially if the car is equipped with large wheels with developed lugs. Gazanul, jumped, landed - grunt, the axle shaft broke. But if the wheels are standard, and the off-road is just snow, ice or mud, then screw differentials convenient and inexpensive.

SCREW HOPE
Screw limited slip differentials have been known for a long time. They are produced for "UAZ" different manufacturers... I myself used these for a whole sports season. It was all the more interesting to compare it with a cam lock. The result is practically the same: the moment on the braking wheel is exactly the same - 3.06 kg.m. The conclusions are the same. By the way, they are fully confirmed by my practice. If you throttle ahead of an obstacle, then a differential tightened by screws really helps in comparison with the usual one. If you have already hung out, then the differential hums, the wheel skips, the car jerks, but does not move.

INCLUDED? DON'T FORGET TO TURN OFF!
Forced locks on UAZ appeared several years ago. Pavel Grekov from the "Extreme-Auto" company recommended them to me for a trial jeep equipped with bridges from "UAZ". Their peculiarities were that the kit included a self-made semi-axle with additional splines, and the installation could not be carried out in garage conditions: Required welding and tuning of the on-off mechanism. In addition, until recently, such interlocks were not performed on spicer-type bridges, which are equipped with currently produced UAZ vehicles.

Differential automatic Krasikov (DAK) - this is the most discussed recently on the Russian Internet blocking for "UAZ". Our tests have shown that this is indeed 100% true blocking, not LSD. Without going into detail into the mechanism of operation (it is very complex), we can say that DAK allows you to turn on dry asphalt without interference, but at the same time, when hanging, it works like a rigidly locked differential. The most expensive among all tested. Reliability and durability are not yet known.

Now there is a new forced blocking that is devoid of these disadvantages. It is called "Sprut" and is produced by the Ulyanovsk Automobile Repair Plant. It is similar to the well-known ARB and works in exactly the same way. When mounted on a stand, when disengaged, it functioned like a normal differential. We brake one wheel - the second continues to rotate. We turn on the compressor, then block. The hiss of the pneumatic drive is heard, and the belt on the pulley braking one wheel begins to slip - both axle shafts rotate at the same speed. Press the button again, now to turn off the lock. One wheel does not rotate, the other rotates. Again the usual differential.
There are no miracles. A hard forced lock is a hard forced lock. You need - turned it on. Don't - turned it off.

GLAMOR IN LAW

Krasikov's automatic differential is the most fashionable and most talked about device on the network. What is it? Is it a lock or is it a limited slip differential? How does it work and how does it work? There were more questions than answers. At first, they didn't even want to give it to us - they said that you, they say, would write badly about it, and sell it to us. After much persuasion, the differential was brought to us. Having disassembled the device, we saw a design that in many ways resembles a screw Torsen. However, a detailed study showed that although the device as a whole is screw-type, it works differently than anything we have tried before. Installed on a stand. We brake one wheel. The belt is slipping, both wheels are spinning. It's like we've turned on hard blocking. Maybe the differential just isn't working? We remove from the stand, insert two axle shafts into the device. We clamp one in a vice, twist the second. Hard, jerky, but turns. The thought arises: what will happen to the car in the turn? We take the device and install it in the UAZ. First, we drive one side onto the flyover. The car continues to drive confidently with the suspended wheel, and both drive wheels rotate at the same speed as when the hard lock is on. Then we do it differently. We hook the car to the pole with a cable. We are trying to get under way. "UAZ" honestly slips with two wheels, from under which smoke comes out. In this case, the wheels rotate synchronously. Then we uncouple the car and start winding nickels around the factory floor, carefully observing the wheels of one axle. The turn takes place without slipping! And this is on the front axle of the car. On the back, by the way, too. If you do not accelerate sharply.

The inter-wheel differential with electric EATON locking in the engaged state is designed to transmit the same torque to the right and left drive wheels. This allows to significantly increase the cross-country ability of UAZ vehicles. Helps to overcome steeper climbs and descents, deeper, snow, mud, swampy areas and sand.

When disengaged, the EATON electrical inter-wheel differential functions as an open differential and distributes the torque between the right and left drive wheels, allowing the wheels to rotate at different speeds.

Differential with electric lock EATON is included forcibly by a button located in a convenient place on the dashboard. It is recommended to turn on the lock when the vehicle speed is no higher than 5 km / h. If one of the driving wheels is slipping, the differential allows the axle to be locked by 100%. Differential disengagement is possible manual or automatic.

The EATON electrical inter-wheel differential is automatically disengaged at a speed of 30 km / h. At the same time, automatic shutdown is possible only if there is an electronic one in the UAZ. Manual forced disengagement of the EATON lock is performed with a button or switch on the dashboard.

Remove Timken from the car in accordance with the UAZ Operation and Repair Manual, take out the axle shafts or CV joints. Remove the standard differential and unscrew the driven gear. Remove bearings from differential and replace if necessary (ref. 7510). Fit the bearings to the EATON electrical locking differential. Install the driven gear.

Adjust the bearing on the electrofusion side with the plates. The gap between the driven and driving gears should be within 1-3 mm between the teeth. Remove the differential, unscrew the driven gear, install it in the axle housing to determine the place of welding of the electrofusion fixing bracket. Weld the bracket for fixing the electrofusion coupling in place.

Get the differential, scald the electrofusion fixing bracket in place. Drill a 13 mm hole for the electrical lead on the top of the axle housing. Remove the differential, put on the driven gear. When assembling a differential with a driven gear, it is necessary to degrease the threaded part of the screws before tightening and lubricate it with an anaerobic medium fixing thread sealant in order to prevent self-loosening.

Install differential assembly into crankcase. Adjust the axle housing cover bearing using the expansion ring and shims. Assemble Timken Bridge and install on the vehicle. Pull and connect the electrical wires to the switch or button.

Place the vehicle on a lift and check that the electrical interlock is switched on and off. For Timken axles with EATON electrical interlocking, it is recommended to use SAE 75W90 or 80W90 viscosity grade oil, API group GL-5, GL-4/5. With constant operation of the UAZ in heavy road conditions, in driving axles it is necessary to use transmission oil viscosity according to SAE 75W140.

Drain the transmission oil and unscrew the crankcase cover, remove the axle shafts or CV joints. Remove the standard differential and unscrew the driven gear. Remove bearings from differential and replace if necessary (ref 7510). Fit the bearings to the EATON electrical locking differential. Fit the bearings to the EATON electrical locking differential.

Install differential in crankcase, fix with clamps. Place the electromagnet fixing plate on the right yoke. Drill a 13 mm hole for the electrical lead on the top of the crankcase. Remove the differential, put on the driven gear. When assembling a differential with a driven gear, it is necessary to degrease the threaded part of the screws before tightening and lubricate it with an anaerobic medium fixing thread sealant in order to prevent self-loosening.

Install the complete differential in the crankcase, fix with the yokes. Place the electromagnet fixing plate on the right yoke. Adjust differential. Clearance of the driven gear relative to the shank. Free running should be within 1-3 mm. Tighten the yoke, install the axle shafts or CV joints. Pull and connect the electrical wires to the switch or button.

Position the vehicle on a lift and check that the electrical interlock is activated and deactivated. Install the crankcase cover and fill the axle with the recommended oil - SAE viscosity grade 75W90 or 80W90, API group - GL-5, GL-4/5. With constant operation of UAZ in difficult road conditions, it is necessary to use SAE 75W140 transmission oil in the drive axles.
