American wagon name. The whole truth about American hood tractors

Everyone has seen an American hood tractor at least once in their life. And how, in fact, can you miss it? Big-nosed, impetuous, big - all these epithets, of course, are about Americans. At the beginning of the 2000s, bonnet Americans poured into Russia in a stream, leaving all KamAZ and MAZ trucks at the end of the queue. But what's the matter? Why did our truckers move to overseas trucks? Since American trucks are direct competitors to Europeans, let's see which sides are stronger.

Huge pluses against the background of minor minuses

American tractors have a lot of advantages, many of which are simply impossible for their European brothers in the saddle. It's about a large cab, a powerful engine, safe box, clutch and internal combustion engine. And, of course, "two meters of life" in front of the driver. In order not to speak abstractly, take specific brand, which is in great demand in our market - Freightliner Cascadia. But first things first.

Huge cockpit

She's really huge. This is the most important and important plus for American bonnets. No competitor has such a cockpit like the Americans. Our drivers, of course, appreciated the capacity and transformation of the cab. You can live in an American tractor! Everything you need is here:
  • Microwave
  • Television
  • Coffee maker
  • Water dispenser
  • Two huge beds
In addition, in Freightliner Cascadia, you can easily stand up to its full height, the floor is flat, there is a huge number of drawers and shelves. After all, this is all that is needed for a calm, fulfilling life! Drivers of Freightliner Cascadia, and other similar tractors, do not think where to find a decent place to park and rest. In the car, you can spend the night, wash, eat normal food, watch TV during breakfast, drink fresh coffee. The bed is really big and you can sleep in any position, and a large number of drawers allows you to take any number of things with you. Some American trucks even have showers!

If we are to compare with Europeans, then let's compare the cabins of the Freightliner Cascadia and, say, Scania. All the European has to offer is two meager sleeping places.

Powerful engine

The engine is really powerful and you can't argue with that either. The Freightliner Cascadia, for example, has a typical engine output of 560 horsepower. Agree, impressive. Especially against the background of European classmates, whose engines are 380-440 horsepower as standard.

Plus, reliability is added to the powerful engine. American trucks are designed to work with a trailer with a gross weight of up to 60 tons, which is why they need such a powerful engine. In Russia, the permitted weight is almost a third less, which means that the tractor does not strain. The engine, with all its desire, cannot be loaded by more than 2/3, exactly like the suspension, gearbox, etc. This is probably why Freightliner Cascadia tractors run on average up to 2.5-3 million kilometers before overhaul. If you cannot imagine what a huge figure this is, then just think about the fact that our domestic KamAZ-5490, according to the plant's statement (!), Will be able to cover up to a million kilometers without major repairs. And Freightliner Cascadia runs three times more even without the plant's announcements.

Box

Regarding the box, everything is simple. Basically, a sixteen-speed gearbox is installed on American tractors. And its plus is that there are synchronizers only in the first gear. Synchronizers wear out rather quickly, so the developers decided to remove this element from the system for greater reliability.

Clutch

The clutch can also be classified as a permanent part. The fact is that the clutch is only needed to engage the first gear. It is without an amplifier, therefore it turns on with great effort, but due to the fact that the rest of the gears are engaged without a clutch, it is practically not used.

Two meters of life ahead

Of course, an accident is an unpleasant moment, but you need to consider its possibility. In a frontal impact, the driver of the American tractor is protected by the engine, in contrast to the driver of the European tractor, which has the engine under it. Collectively, the Freightliner Cascadia driver is protected by the engine, front fascia, front axle, body structure, while the European truck driver is protected only by the cladding.

Minuses
Of the minuses, it can only be noted that such a tractor can only be driven in the Russian Federation. Abroad, such tractors do not run in length.

Comparison

The comparison price will be approximately 4 million rubles. This is quite a bit for a thoroughbred tractor. But what kind of competitors?
KamAZ-5490 is a new domestically produced truck. Although, of course, this is a Mercedes-Benz Actros in an old body, but now the revised Mercedes is produced under the KamAZ brand. Nobody knows how many kilometers he will walk, and whether they will be so carefree.

Scania - for 4 million rubles you can buy a three-year-old tractor in fair condition. It will be better than the new KamAZ, but worse than the American hood tractor. If you are now asking why Scania is worse than Freightliner Cascadia, then scroll up a little - all the arguments are described there.

Freightliner Cascadia - it is he who deserves more attention. Think for yourself, for 4 million rubles you can take a two-three-year-old Freightliner Cascadia with a range of only 200-300 thousand kilometers. This will be a top tier truck. All the arguments described above speak in its favor. In addition, it will have an advantage that the new KamAZ will not have - American quality. You can, of course, argue for a long time about the quality of the Americans, but no one will argue that it is many times better than the Russian build quality.

Thus, the choice, of course, falls on the American Freightliner Cascadia tractor. All of its pluses are described above, and they really do matter.

American tractors have their own history and their own characteristics. At the same time, regardless of any features, the purchase of a tractor from America cannot but rejoice in the level of assembly and adaptations to any conditions, both weather and operation. Recently, tractors from American manufacturers are becoming more and more popular, and many Russian truck owners have become happy owners of American tractors such as International, Freightliner, Kenworth, etc. Buying a tractor from the American automotive industry will allow you to appreciate the power, endurance and high level the comfort of these powerful and at the same time beautiful cars.

American truck tractors are the best suited for operation in Russian conditions. Typically, semitrailer tractors are used as a tractor + semi-trailer or trailer. The latest generation truck tractors presented on the Russian market are a technique that helps to deliver cargo to the right place without any problems. Behind the beautiful appearance of truck tractors, there are impressive technical characteristics - a reliable engine, wear resistance of parts and undemanding to fuel quality. American truck tractors are easy to maintain and repair, because spare parts for them are easy to get and their cost is slightly higher than the cost of competing spare parts.

On average, a "used" American truck can cost about 50 thousand dollars. The European analogue will cost 2 times more. This is due to the fact that European trucks are fully compliant with EU standards, while the supported "Americans" do not. In addition, European truck manufacturers have more developed dealer networks and convenient financial instruments such as loans and leasing. But American trucks have a hood ... and not only ...

Undoubtedly, the main feature of tractors from overseas is the bonnet layout of the cab. Having a hood on an American truck almost completely eliminates the possibility of a driver's death in a collision. The American trucks owe the hood to the trade unions, whose leaders once demanded the complete removal of cabover trucks from the United States. Because of this, Freightliner even had to relocate the production of one of its trucks outside America. American trucks also differ in a narrower, but at the same time, comfortable cab. Plus to everything - less vibration load, due to the driver's seat shifted behind the wheel.

As it turned out recently, American tractors are highly respected on the highways of our country.

The frame is made of chrome-molybdenum steel profile ( lifetime warranty from fatigue cracks throughout America) - and this is the practical crease resistance of the frame in case of accidents-overturns and accidents-departures.

Engine - low-speed six-cylinder diesel engines of large volume (from 11 to 14 liters) with a specific power from 30 to 40 hp / liter, with a rated power of 370-500 hp. These units are striking in their endurance. Possible mileage before overhaul, subject to the rules of technical operation - 2,500,000 kilometers.

The power system is an electronically controlled direct injection and the lack of a common injection pump. A plus in such a scheme is greater resistance to failure, the ability to adjust many parameters of the motor to meet the requirements of specific conditions.

Clutch can be attributed to both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include the fact that the unit itself is little used, due to the peculiarities of the device of American gearboxes. But the disadvantages include the fact that the grip in them is squeezed out only at the beginning of the movement. Subsequent gear changes are made without depressing the clutch pedal. Since the clutch pedal is rarely used in American trucks, it is made without amplifiers. Accordingly, in order to squeeze the grip to the maximum, you have to make considerable physical efforts. Accustomed to a different type of clutch, domestic drivers initially experience some difficulty in driving American trucks. It is possible, however, to adapt to the clutch shifting.

The gearbox, as you might have guessed, is of the non-syncronizing type (the most wearing element is excluded), which allows you to change gears without squeezing the clutch. A feature of such gearboxes is that the torque in any of the gears is always transmitted through a pair of intermediate shafts that double each other. Some of the gearboxes are equipped with electrical mechanisms for automatic selection and shifting of gears. The system is called "autoshift".

Tractors from overseas, almost without exception, are three-axle. Both rear axles are driving, which reduces the load on the gears of the main pairs. Absolutely all cars have a lockable center differential, and the axles themselves are fastened on a pneumatic adjustable suspension.
The advantages of the cab include aluminum cladding on a steel frame, small hinged elements made of light plastic. The advantages are obvious - the absence of corrosion throughout the entire service life.

Well, and, perhaps, one of the most important advantages of the "US" technology of "long-range combat" is that the tractors are designed for the total mass of the road train up to 60 tons, which, under the conditions of the 8 tons per axle limitation, implies the operation of the main units of the machine under a load of only 2 / 3 of the maximum calculated, thereby increasing the potential motor resource of traction units at least twice!

Simply excellent traction qualities are provided both by a high flat bar of torque more than a voluminous American diesel engine, and by the power produced by this diesel engine, measured according to American standards. In this case, the reality is that american motor will be 25% more powerful than the European one with the same declared passport capacity, which means every penny of tax levied on one horsepower, on American trucks it is practiced with greater efficiency than on all others.

Restrictions according to the standards of our country in the gross weight of the road train, dimensions and maximum permissible axle load give American tractors, which have a constant supply of traction, a serious advantage in transporting loaded trailers on unpaved roads, graders and in difficult road conditions (snowfall, ice, long climbs) ...

If you are Renault, you will most likely be denied the sale of spare parts in stores focused on Scania. And if you have a Volvo, they won't take you for repairs at the Mercedes station. But the difference in the brands of American trucks is just a convention! Each brand has its own models, its own frames, its own appearance, its own interior equipment (buttons and instrument cluster), some little things there (for example, the angle of inclination windshield) - but everything else, everything that can wear out and break from heavy use - it's all often just the same!

The main emphasis in American marketing of various brands is placed rather on some irrational advantages of owning a particular brand. Because technically there is nothing to rest against - it's just a constructor made of aggregates that are standard throughout America. Engines, transmissions, suspensions (often), electrical equipment. Therefore, if you have an American car, you will be helped with spare parts in any store where spare parts are imported from America, and at any service station where American tractors are repaired!

American trucks can easily transport trailers of any weight allowed in the CIS countries and China, easily move on roads without improved asphalt pavement, are not very demanding on the quality of diesel fuel, with the exception of individual elements of the electronics and power system, and are repairable at any equipped service station.

"US" trucks lose the least in value from age and mileage. Depreciation charges are minimal. This is due to the simplicity of the design and the multiple safety factor of the main units.

Nose tractors have the highest mileage / operating hours ratio. That is, an American tractor, transporting the same cargo, either spends less time for a certain segment of the journey, or it will cover a larger segment of the route in the same time. Here it is a matter of both better traction dynamics and better tolerance of unsatisfactory road conditions... In this case, a high level of this ratio leads to the fastest turnover of the car in one complete trip.

American trucks positively characterize a fairly even level of maintenance costs throughout the entire period of operation of the machine. The absence of an avalanche-like increase in service costs throughout the entire service life makes these machines quite valuable not only at a young age and with low mileage, but in general at any period of their life. Diesels, in addition to timely oil changes, require a minimum of maintenance work. The fuel equipment does not need mechanical adjustment, which blocks the possibility of unskilled intervention. Other equipment of the machine is simple in its structure.

American trucks are the cheapest vehicles of this type in their class among all prospective manufacturers, except for KamAZ, Belarusian MAZ and a number of Chinese manufacturers.

In addition to technical suitability, American tractors have a price advantage over European ones in terms of the cost of spare parts and over Russian ones in terms of the total cost of spare parts. Less downtime for regular maintenance and excellent indicators of the time-cost / kilometer ratio allow achieving the shortest payback periods among most options for Russian and any imported equipment.

Technical advantages of American tractors

Compared to European tractors:

  • The ability of American trucks to transport trailers of any maximum permissible weight (under Russian traffic rules, up to about 40 tons of gross weight: 8 - the car itself with fuel, plus 32 - the trailer).
  • American tractors have a sturdier frame. Thanks to this, the main structural elements of the frame do not suffer not only in accidents such as coups, but also in most accidents-collisions with obstacles (ditches, trees, oncoming cars)
  • Diesels of American tractors have a large volume. On the one hand, this gives a higher level of torque and power, and on the other, less thermal and mechanical stress of the structure, which in turn has a positive effect on the motor life.
  • American trucks have gearboxes of a non-synchromesh type, which makes them lighter in design. This allows you to transmit two (on average) times more torques and shift gears without pressing the clutch. In turn, this leads to an increase in the clutch resource.
  • American trucks have two drive axles, a mandatory center differential lock and a large longitudinal adjustment range of the fifth wheel coupling. On the one hand, all this allows you to make the best use of the traction qualities of the tractor, and on the other hand, to transport trailers with a larger mass within the permissible axle load rules. Which makes the car more stable on the road.
  • For American tractors, larger fuel tanks are provided, which allows them to be used for longer fuel-to-refueling distances.
  • American trucks have relatively cheap parts. The price level for large and expensive units is about half that of Europe, and for some parts the price is generally comparable to the price of spare parts for MAZs.
  • The cab of American trucks is prefabricated, thus being repairable in the event of an accident. Consists of aluminum and plastic elements.
  • American trucks are better suited for long haul on unpaved roads and graders.
  • American trucks have a relatively simple structure and the best maintainability of the structure in the conditions of Russian service.
  • Large amounts of berths.

Compared to Russian trucks:

  • The same advantages of American tractors as against European vehicles, plus an overall relative technical excellence in design.
  • American trucks have large service intervals, plus the resource of the units.
  • Diesel engines of American trucks with an electronically controlled power supply system (no common high-pressure fuel pump) and the possibility of computer diagnostics (including self-diagnostics).
  • American trucks have a good tolerance for Russian fuel.
  • American trucks have great driver comfort

Summing up, one cannot fail to mention the mesmerizing appearance of these tractors of truly gigantic dimensions. The abundance of chrome and various side lights attracts the eye of anyone in front of whom this "miracle" of American technology passes. With the advent of these cars on the highways of republican significance, driving has undoubtedly become more interesting.

Of course, many can dispute all of the above and will be right somewhere. After all, the "long-range" technique from the United States is not without its drawbacks.

For example, such as increased fuel consumption and the lack of advanced electronic assistants, archaic structures and difficult control of the tractor (in comparison with Europeans), poor visibility and much more.

But it is on our territory that some of the above disadvantages become undoubted advantages. Lack of qualified service on the road, poor quality tracks, difficult climatic conditions - all this is doing its evil deed. And here the archaic, but very reliable design of American tractors turns out to be very useful.

VOLVO

In 1981, after the purchase by the concern VOLVO AB (production of truck tractors) a part of the American plant White Motor Corp., the company VOLVO USA began its history. The established company was named VOLVO White Truck Corp. and the production base was located in Greensboro, North Carolina. An important event in the life of the company was the use of joint developments with General Motors in the construction of trucks and tractors.

In 1997, VOLVO bought the remaining shares of the joint venture with GM and renamed it VOLVO NORTH AMERICA. Leaving the VOLVO AB concern, the company occupied a unique niche in the market of truck tractors and trucks. They are now the world's second largest manufacturer of long-haul US tractors and a leader in heavy-duty diesel engines. VOLVO truck ranks second in terms of the volume of trucks imported into the Russian Federation, second only to FREIGHTLINER.

American trucks VOLVO truck is a combination of the best features of American trucks and European traditions. A higher level of noise and heat insulation, a high-quality cab finish, put the machines of these semitrailer tractors in a special place. Due to the fact that the production volumes of VOLVO truck against the background of competitors are not very large, VOLVO allows you to favorably distinguish yourself in the stream of similar ones and demonstrate your individuality and non-trivial approach to choosing the appearance of a truck.

While retaining all the advantages of a classic American tractor, VOLVO truck tractors are highly competitive due to a better design of the cab, the use of more expensive finishing materials, and improved noise and heat insulation. Despite the elegant, original appearance, VOLVO tractors are distinguished by high functionality, they are reliable and convenient, have high practicality and comfort for the driver. And also it is the American VOLVO tractors that are famous for their exceptional safety. They are durable, have high maintainability, and the purchase of spare parts for them is not a problem.

VOLVO trucks and truck tractors are functional, durable and comfortable, which allows them to surpass everything domestic cars... And in terms of build quality and, which is very important for Russian roads, in terms of improved noise and thermal insulation of the cab, Volvo tractors are even ahead of American manufacturers.

FREIGHTLINER

American trucks FREIGHTLINER are the most widespread brand of truck tractors operated in Russia and are machines the highest class... FREIGHTLINER American trucks are the example of the classic US truck tractor, combining the advantages of reliability, excellent dynamics and economy. Now, getting up from behind the wheel, you can walk to the berth and stretch out to your full height. The driver's seat itself can be rotated 180 degrees.

American trucks FREIGHTLINER have excellent aerodynamics and an exceptional economy system, have a wide view and extraordinary maneuverability: the shortest possible turning radius from curb to curb. Engine on the FREIGHTLINER - Detroit Diesel - S 60 truck tractor, 450 hp. and a volume of 12.7-14 liters. For FREIGHTLINER tractors, Detroit Diesel engines are considered "native" - they have one owner: the Daimler Chrysler concern. FREIGHTLINER is downright simple and utilitarian. The inner lining is made of gray plastic; in front of the driver - a large speedometer and tachometer, complemented by a small information display. There are more mirrors here, the visibility is clearly better. A wheel- exactly the same as that of the Mercedes Actros tractor, only without the Mercedes emblem.

PETERBILT

America is inconceivable without them. Truck tractors PETERBILT - gleaming chrome, with a powerful engine and wheelbase 6x4, and a giant "sleeping bag". Those who are fortunate enough to work with these trucks say: "PETERBILT forgives a lot when you go to bed." The PETERBILT truck tractors have always been renowned for their reliability. This is not surprising - manual assembly, a multistage delivery system make PETERBILT extremely maintainable and easy to operate. For many years, the 379 model PETERBILT has uncompromisingly wins the majority of Truck Shows and remains the company's hallmark. Buying your own Peterbilt is the dream of many American truckers.

PETERBILT has always been at the forefront of technical innovation. It was they who began using aluminum to lighten the frame and increase the load capacity. Also, for the first time, all-aluminum hoods that deviate by 90 degrees were introduced into practice. These measures have significantly improved serviceability as well as reduced weight.

It so happened that PETERBILT trucks were most widely used by private drivers and small transport companies. The “fault” is the spirit of true freedom, so revered in the states. The PETERBILT truck is a real cowboy's car. An abundance of chrome, tall pipes in the Duesenberg style, a classic profile - this is why Peterbilt truck tractors are so loved by individual truckers. In addition to bonded vehicles, PETERBILT produces cabover and middle class trucks. But no matter what it is - PETERBILT truck tractors are appreciated for their unique style and traditions.

FORD Sterling

The STERLING car brand is an example of extraordinary market vitality. In the period from 1909 to the end of the 70s and the beginning of the 80s, cars and companies with this name appeared on the market and disappeared at least three times. When, in the early 80s, this brand again disappeared from sight, it seemed that this time it had definitely died and was buried. It was not so.

In the fall of 1997, all of the FORD heavy-duty truck production in Louisville was acquired by Freightliner, which was at the same time buying up all of its competitors it could reach. But then the new owners began to think under what brand to sell the former "Ford" trucks. Do not sculpt the Freightliner emblem on them! It was then that they remembered the half-forgotten name STERLING. So, in October 1997, a new company STERLING TRUCK was born under the wing of Freightliner.

True, in recent years, former Ford vehicles have been partially unified with Freightliner trucks. For example, some trucks are equipped with a "Freightliner" rear suspension AirLiner with two bellows for each drive axle. In Russia, this is a plus, since in Russia there are a lot of "Freds", the service has been worked out, and it is easier to find spare parts for such a suspension.

STERLING is equipped with the most spacious Silver Star sleeping compartment, 195 cm long. Huge from the outside, from the inside, the sleeping bag generally seems immense. The feeling of a small room is enhanced by the distance to the ceiling, which by eye is at least 2.5 m. On the wide sleeping shelves, it seems, you can sleep not only along but also across.

STERLING, founded in the spring of 1998 on the basis of the heavy truck division of the Ford corporation, together with the Freightliner concern, became part of the transnational corporation DaimlerChrysler. Until recently, its head office was located in Willoughby, and in 2005 it was relocated to Redford, Michigan. The main manufacturing center remains a 2,100-person facility in St. Thomas, Canada, which manufactures heavy-duty hood trucks and truck tractors. In the USA, the Condor chassis is assembled at a plant in Charleston, South Carolina, and the Cargo delivery series at a Mexican plant in Santiago.

In 2006, the Sterling program continues to include four families: one series of cabover Cargo trucks and three bonnet trucks - the mid-range Acterra and the L and A series heavy truck tractors, which were named Louisville and Aeromax in the Ford program. In 2004-2005. In their design, the influence of Mercedes-Benz increased, expressed in the priority use of diesel engines and transmissions of Mercedes-Benz of German and Brazilian production, which has not yet become an obstacle to the introduction of new power units and components of various American manufacturers into the set of components.

At the end of 2002, Sterling launched the first and so far the only own series of Acterra (4x26x4) bonneted trucks with a gross weight of 8.6-29.0 tons. They are offered in four basic versions 5500, 6500, 7500 (4x2) and 8500 ( 6x4), which are mainly used in distribution transport and delivery of goods over short and medium distances, and chassis with various bodies and special equipment are used in construction, utilities, emergency and fire services. In 2003 they were joined by 4x4 variants with their own front drive axles and transfer case... The standard equipment includes Mercedes-Benz engines of the MBE900 series with an output of 170-300 hp. with., on request, Caterpillar C7 units (190-330 hp) are offered, to which in 2005 a Cummins ISC diesel with a common rail with a capacity of 225-350 hp was added. with. Drivetrain includes Eaton Fuller or Mercedes-Benz 5-11 manual gearboxes, Allison automatic and Mercedes-Benz AGS automated 6-speed gearboxes, Meritor rear drive bogies with permissible load up to 13.6 tons and automatic blocking of cross-axle differentials. Trucks are equipped with parabolic leaf springs or AirLiner air bellows, hydraulic or air brakes with drum or disc brakes, ABS and ASR. Short or double cabins with a length of 2,870 mm are made of galvanized steel or aluminum.

Cabover chassis Condor (4x28x4) with a gross weight of 15.0-44.5 tons are intended both for municipal services and for the installation of industrial and construction equipment. They are equipped diesel engines Caterpillar C7С11 or Cummins ISL with a capacity of 210-350 liters. with. and several types automatic boxes Allison gear.

The L (L-Line) range includes flatbed trucks of the L7500, L8500 and L9500 (4x26x4) series with a gross weight of 9.5-30.0 tons, as well as a chassis for installing various equipment. The LT semitrailer tractors are designed to operate as part of road trains with a gross weight of up to 36.3 tons (in special cases - up to 62.6 tons). All machines are used to transport goods over various distances, in construction, municipal and forestry. Since 2005, the HX 3-axle chassis for the construction and installation of industrial equipment has been produced, equipped with rear power take-off shafts and additional Hendrickson Composilite ST support axles with a permissible load of 6.1 tons and steered wheels deflecting at an angle of 280. For light delivery vehicles, they offer lightweight front and rear axles, the mass of which has been reduced by 13 and 57 kg. respectively. MercedesBenz MBE900 engines installed on L7500 and L8500 series German assembly or Caterpillar С7С9 with a capacity of 175-300 liters. with., on heavy machines L9500 - Caterpillar С11С15 or Detroit Diesel series 60, developing a capacity of 280-600 liters. with. Since 2004, they have also been equipped with a 6-cylinder 12.8-liter diesel Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 (350-450 hp) of Brazilian production. The machines are equipped with mechanical transmissions, automatic Allison or automated, with a number of steps from 5 to 18, Meritor axles on a TufTrac balanced leaf spring suspension with variable cross-section sheets or an air AirLiner with two cylinders per axle, Hendrickson drive bogies, a pneumatic brake drive with ABS.

The range of heavy trucks and long-haul tractors A (A-Line) is unified with the heavy series L9500. It includes two basic models - flatbed trucks and chassis А9500 and truck tractors АТ9500 (4x26x4), which are offered in versions with different configurations and degree of chassis strength. In 2005, the production of reinforced HX chassis began, which mainly uses a Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 diesel engine with a capacity of 350-450 hp. with. with a more efficient cooling system. Other chassis features include lightweight frames with increased torsional strength, upgraded cab air suspension and power steering. On request, they are equipped with composite material springs and a balanced air suspension. Production vehicles are equipped with several types of Caterpillar and Detroit Diesel turbocharged engines, developing power from 335 to 600 hp. with., mechanical gearboxes with a number of steps from 9 to 18, drive axles on leaf or air suspension AirLiner, air braking system with ABS and fuel tanks with a capacity of up to 900 liters. On this series, cabins from the L range are used, which are complemented by different types of sleeping compartments. The most spacious and comfortable SilverStar has an internal length of about 2 m.

So, American trucks are so flawless that even Zadornov would not have found a single reason for jokes. Compared to the "heavyweights" of other countries, the American ones have a recognizable design signature and style. Here are the best-selling trucks in the history of the United States.

Peterbilt 386 hybrid

Year: 2009

Number of copies: 120 560

Created on the basis of the already existing 386 "Peterbilt" in 2009, the "Hybrid" was greeted more warmly than its predecessor - the reason for this is a slight reinforcement of the frame, since the weight of the car increased by 3 tons. The car became more beautiful, and even the pale green color of the truck fell in love with the harsh truckers. The main advantage for such a tractor is economical fuel consumption (25 liters per 100 km). The car gained popularity despite the fact that official dealers warn about poor climbing at the start.

InternationalLoneStarTractor Trailer

Year: 2008

Number of copies: 152 456

It used to be that truck buyers were completely oblivious to vehicle performance. However, with the release of the next model, the designers of LoneStar decided to conduct a survey what customers liked most about the International LoneStar Tractor Trailer. 73% voted for the futuristic cockpit design. Also, the popularity of the truck was partially ensured by the warranty conditions of sale from the manufacturer - parts and repairs at a discount. International LoneStar is equipped with a 12.4 liter power unit MaxxForce, 475 hp with. Among the significant advantages of LoneStar, experts also note excellent maneuverability, high productivity, low noise and vibration levels in the cab.

FreightlinerFLA9664

Year: 1984

Number of copies: 160,070

This model could not collect the specified number of sales. Judge for yourself - a cramped sleeping compartment, high fuel consumption (45 liters per 100 km), torque - 1900 Nm at 1200 rpm. Freightliner usually builds trucks to glory. However, for some reason, this very tractor attracted James Cameron, who used it in the most dynamic scene of the second "Terminator", where John Connor at his motocross motorcycle trying to hide from the T-1000 on a Freightliner FLA 9664. During the chase, the tractor was presented so powerful and terrifying that it made the "weakest" tractor of the company the best-selling

KenworthW 900

Year: 2005

Number of copies: 155 367

In 2005, long-haul tractors with hoods underwent another modernization. The W 900 has a classic "old school" style, but nevertheless has an original cab design. It was equipped in such a way that between the seats there is a kind of tunnel to the driver's rest room. Without exaggeration, the resting place is almost a small hotel room. A full sleeping place, an air conditioning system, an audio system - all this is conducive to pleasant sleep and leisure. The Kenworth W900 is powered by a Caterpillar engine. And although the manufacturer did possible installation Detroit Diesel and Cummins engines, orders for the latter are few.

MackR700

Year: 1965

Number of copies: 215 670

Typically, truck models remain on the market for several years, then the model is upgraded to a new generation. "Seven hundredth", as truckers called it, stayed on the market for 25 years, acquiring minor upgrades during all this time. R700 of the seventies is very similar in design to our KrAZ of the eighties. Usually, Soviet designers did not look up to the bad models, so one can judge the cult status of this tractor. A repeated hero of films and computer games, the "seven hundredth" is also a very frequent participant in races and a victim of tuning - alterations to lowrider and big foot. By the way, it was this truck that got into the Guinness Book of Records in 1972 for the fastest acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h. The record was 17 seconds. In 2005, he was beaten by Kenworth.

WhiteGMCWx64

Year: 1994

Number of copies: 171,332

In spite of excellent performance The WX64 was never used as a tractor. Its purpose is to be a fuel truck, concrete mixer, garbage truck, sweeper. This is the reason for the large number of manufactured models - if the manufacturer relies on municipal orders, then this significantly saves production costs with a good prepayment. The not very popular White Motor Company truck brand created its legendary WX64 together with the General Motors design bureau. The result was a car that was praised by everyone - from the townspeople who did not experience discomfort from the noise of the truck to the drivers.

Sterling Trucks Acterra

Year: 2004

Numberhonorin copies: 90 980

Sterling Trucks has a short history. In 1998, it was organized by the giant of the automotive industry Freightliner as one of the production units that produce equipment with its own network of dealerships and service centers. A few years later, the company moved to Daimler, and in 2008 the new owner announced that the brand would be liquidated. During this short period of existence, the company was able to issue a masterpiece model Acterra, which, after the liquidation of the company, continued to be produced, but already under the Ford brand (model LNT 9000). Some models also found their way to the CIS countries, but after the collapse of the company, their prices rose sharply. Now it is extremely difficult to find Sterling Acterra for sale on our territory.

A75 TAutocar

Year: 1961

Number of copies: 140,058

Before you is the grandfather of the American car industry. No exhibition is complete without new Autocar products. However, the A75T model deserves special attention. The truck was introduced not only to heavy industry, but also to agriculture. In 1961, it became a national brand, since the manufacturer released it at almost cost (as it was said). Be that as it may, the car was cheaper than the products of competitors, and this despite the fact that under the hood was a Caterpillar engine. The A75T also became very popular because 1961 was the year of a jump in gasoline prices. The model has secured its reputation as a "truck that even runs on diluted diesel fuel." By the way, no one ever dilutes fuel in America, so when some clever guys tried to dilute fuel and the car was on the move, it was a miracle for an American.

It was like this: self-taught mechanic Cyrus McCormick in the distant 1831 began to produce the first mechanical reapers in the United States. After 60 years, his company merged with a competitor to create a concern that was named the International Harvester Company in 1902. The engineer Edward Johnson, who worked there, in 1905 created the first proto-truck "Autobuggy", which went into series in 1907. It was an open platform on wooden wheels with a diameter of 1.5 meters, driven by a 2-cylinder engine of 16–20 hp. with. and two chain drives. The carrying capacity reached 1 ton.

By the end of the 1920s, the Inter program also included heavy three-axle models with a carrying capacity of up to 10 tons.

Since 1915, it has been replaced by a wide range of trucks with a carrying capacity of up to 3.5 tons, and since 1925, with the opening of a second plant in the town of Springfield (Illinois), trucks of a classic layout with 4- and 6-cylinder engines of our own production and a cardan drive have been in production carrying capacity up to 10 tons.

One of the first in the USA, IH introduced cabover models into the program

In 1932, the first cabover delivery truck, the C300, appeared in the program. The well-known designer of Russian origin Count Alexei Sakhnovsky took part in its creation.

The COF-4000 cabover tractor with a semitrailer is being tested in the Soviet NAMI

In 1941, International Harvester celebrated the production of its one millionth vehicle (3rd largest truck manufacturer in the United States) and produced 45 base models.

It is believed that the K10 model was the prototype of the Soviet ZiS-150.

Although trucks were the main activity, the concern also produced tractors, combines, bulldozers, loaders, road construction equipment.

During World War II, International produced a unified series of four-wheel drive vehicles, including cargo-passenger pickups, 1.5-2.5-ton trucks with gasoline engines with a capacity of 85-124 liters. with., half-track armored personnel carriers and tracked artillery tractors.

The bonneted Transtar first received its own name Eagle with the image of an eagle on a flat grille

After the war, the production of trucks of the "K" series developed in 1941, which included 22 basic models, began. Particularly popular were the mid-range models (K8-KR11) with a lifting capacity of 6-8 tons with Red Diamond engines with a working volume of 6-7.5 liters (112-134 hp) and a new design. It was from them, as the common myth says, that our ZiS-150 was copied. However, this is not true: we can only talk about a general style solution, which was the same among many manufacturers in those years. In the same years, the production of the first long-haul tractors of the Emeryville series began with a gross vehicle weight of up to 40.5 tons, which laid the foundation for a long chain of followers.

By the early 1960s, International Harvester had developed an extensive truck program, from light pick-up trucks to giant off-road haulers. At the same time, proper names appeared for different families, ending in star ("star").

50 ton Payhauler - product of International & Hough special unit

In 1962, the Loadstar bonnet trucks became the core of the program. They received a V-shaped 8-cylinder engine with a capacity of about 200 hp. with. and a 4-speed gearbox. Their cabover variants were called Cargostar. A year later, the heavier, bonneted Fleetstar machines appeared. In 1965, the most famous cabover "long-range" tractor CO-4000 Transtar appeared. It was equipped with its own DVT573 gasoline engine or Cummins and Detroit Diesel diesels. Beginning with this model, for the next 40 years, International cabover boots have been the leaders of the local market. In 1964, the International & Hough branch of construction equipment was created, producing Payhauler 4x4 off-road dump trucks with a carrying capacity of 30-50 tons. At the same time, International Harvester subsidiary assembly plants were opened in Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, Canada, Mexico, South Africa.

After extensive testing, a whole batch of Paystar 5070 was purchased by the USSR.

Over the next decade, the program expanded, reaching 75 basic models only, each in dozens of modifications. At the same time, a gradual replacement of their own engines with third-party ones began. Thus, the Transtar 4200 range of bonneted tractors was equipped with five different engines, eight gearboxes, six wheelbase sizes and nine paint options.

In 1973, a truly epoch-making model for the brand appeared in the program - the Paystar 5000 construction truck in 4x4, 6x4 and 6x6 variants with a gross weight of up to 30 tons with an aluminum cab and 22 types of engines with a capacity of 210-380 hp. with. It turned out to be so successful that, after lengthy tests, a whole batch of construction vehicles on a 6x6 chassis was purchased by the Soviet Union.

Their distant descendant of the early 2000s with a plastic hood

The beginning of the 1980s was marked by a major expansion into foreign markets, primarily to Europe. The large Spanish group ENASA (owner of the Ebro and Pegaso brands), the English Seddon-Atkinson and a third of the shares of the Dutch DAF were bought out. But then came the crisis in the United States and a decline in production, which almost led to the closure of the company. As a result, they had to say goodbye to light models, sell the agricultural and construction departments and suspend the production of trucks for almost a year.

In 1986, the new company Navistar International was born, surviving thanks to just three families: the delivery Cargostar, the construction Paystar and the mainline Transtar. The latter was produced in the luxury Eagle package, and for the first time there were luxurious Pro-sleeper sleeping compartments with two berths, a refrigerator and a TV.

Simple machines of the 2000 series were found very widely in the United States.

In the 1990s, Navistar entered with a new range of different classes, which had a four-digit number. The 1000 series was a semi-hood layout for urban vans. Next, 2000, - a simplified chassis with a total weight of 13–33 tons with motors of 230–435 hp. with. with steel cabins, they were commonly used as flatbed or dump trucks. The 3000 series was also a chassis, this time for school buses. The newly developed 4000 series bonnet featured a plastic "aerodynamic" tail. It was offered in different versions with a total weight of 16-25 tons and equipped with diesel engines with a capacity of 175-300 liters. with. The main “highlight” of the program, the hood “builders” of Paystar, continued the 5000 series. Being repeatedly updated, they were produced with different hoods and cabins, had a total weight of 16–38 tons and an engine power of 275–525 hp. with. The next series, 6000, was reserved for complete buses of our own production, but was never produced. The 7000 series was a simplified two-axle urban tractors based on the 4000 series machines. New series 8000 - regional tractors, mainly with their own diesels with a capacity of 195-430 liters. with.

Main truck tractor 9300 Classic Eagle with luxury sleeping compartment Pro-Sleeper

Finally, the "senior" series 9000 - top programs, "long-range" tractors. Machines of this particular series have become widely known in our country. Cabotniki formed three families. "Classics" 9600 and 9700 differed in the position of the front axle - the front axle in the first and shifted back by 134 cm - in the second. Later, the "older" model 9800 appeared - with a raised cab and a flat floor. The range of bonneted tractors was started by the "classic" 9300 with a large chrome grille and two pairs of headlights mounted vertically. He received his own name Classic Eagle. The rest of the cars - 9200, 9400 and 9900 - differed in quieter shapes, different hood lengths and the location of the front axle. All of them were equipped with a wide selection of units, including a dozen diesel engines of different brands with a capacity of 280-600 liters. with.

Late cabover 9800 Russian assembly

The last decades have been characterized by the further development of the brand, including the international one. A joint venture was formed with the Czech Tatra for the production of military equipment, with the Indian Mahindra for the production of heavy trucks for the local market, with the German MAN for the joint development of engines. Experiments were conducted to develop new niches: electric E-Star vans, Citystar city vans, Loadstar cabover garbage trucks appeared and disappeared in the program. Among the successful solutions is the new versatile 7000 Workstar range. The latter, together with the cabover 9800, was assembled here, in Pushkin (near St. Petersburg), by Goodwill - the only case of assembling American trucks in Russia.

Hood "workers" 7600 Workstar also assembled in Pushkin

In the last couple of years, Navistar has continued to develop with the emergence of new series, already with a two-letter designation - HX and LX. He is also a reputable manufacturer of military equipment and diesel trucks.

This is a product of the Australian division, the International 3600 brutal tractor.

The most outstanding appearance is the International Lonestar tractor
