We have already touched upon the reliability and maintainability of cars, but this important point and is a key choice for many survivalists. A reasonable balance of some characteristics in relation to others is necessary. If we consider it in practice, then not a single car can meet all the conditions as much as possible. You can only make a "composite" of a suitable car and select similar models. Moreover, in practice, the choice can be influenced by the specific tasks of the survivalist, for example, a very large family, circumstances, including financial, personal preferences and the practice of owning a particular brand, model, and, most importantly, the starting position, it may be easier to re-equip the existing one, which is not ideal suitable carthan to invest in untested options. Remains elongated five-door and "shnivy". Here already with useful space, especially in the first, better, and with stability on slippery surfaces, and even with the comfort of movement on medium roads, since "goats" are practically not observed. But, as always, there is one big BUT.

Half a meter of extra length turned the VAZ-2131 into a good truck, and it's more pleasant to travel on it. But they also made a clumsy cow out of a nimble all-terrain vehicle, with difficulty maneuvering in yards packed with cars, or on forest paths. However, everything is not so scary - UAZs are something special in this sense. Moreover, there is also a "Chevy-Niva", which cannot be blamed for such a thing. They have one thing in common: VERY weak engine - for this mass and these transmissions.

The same 50 additional centimeters of length were added to the five-door 240, and to the seemingly short "shniva", nevertheless, stretched by 30 cm, - generally 250 kilograms of mass. To this increase and the motor would be a new, at least a 2-liter 8-valve, in order to maintain sufficient traction at the "bottom".

In general, the real picture is as follows. I will not expand on overtaking and other sharp maneuvers on the tracks - this is not the topic of this article. But where in the "shortcut" I calmly walked in 1st gear, and in the "UAZ" generally in the second, on the five-door I had to turn on the lower one. "Chevy" did not differ much from her, although in terms of maneuverability it looked, of course, better.

"UAZ" - hit of the disaster season


Oddly enough, it will not be about the classic "goats" - relatives of the UAZ-469, although they should not be discounted. Just in lineup Ulyanovsk residents have a completely unique car that has no analogues in the world. This is the so-called "nurse", "pill", in general, call it what you want, but in fact it is an all-terrain minibus UAZ 452.

Something ideologically similar is being produced by a number of German and Italian manufacturers - an off-road vehicle designed for relatively comfortable transportation of soldiers. That's right, since, like the domestic "rogue", these are initially purely military models. It is difficult to call them analogues - the price is five to ten times higher, the permeability, however, also, because the basis is not car platform, but a conventional wheeled tractor.

There is still a kind of angular analogue of the "nurse" - "Land Rover 101 Forward control". But this is still a typical light truck, somewhat reminiscent of our "shishiga" slightly reduced in size.

Having driven plenty of all the modifications of "UAZ", I would have stopped my choice on the "nurse", as on an almost ready, even in "stock", expeditionary vehicle. I had two problems with them:

- it is very difficult to climb into the driver's seat with severely injured limbs, and then turn the oak steering wheel and squeeze the same pedals;

- difficult access to the engine located under the cab.

Because of the latter, an extremely radical heating method cannot be applied. intake manifold by splashing cans of boiling water on it. To this, as well as to preheating the engine crankcase with a blowtorch followed by scrolling the shaft with a "crooked starter" before starting, we had to resort to frost at -55 degrees. Cars started without any problems! The battery, of course, had to be carried away in warmth at night and the appropriate antifreeze should be used.

Another "minus" that turns into a "plus" is the controls shifted to the left, including the steering wheel, which is why we have a permanently broken left elbow. The exact same approach is implemented in the "Defenders". This is done to improve the side view from the driver's seat, when you just tilt your head a little, and you can immediately see: aha, there is a hefty stone under the water, you need to go around it ...

And one more "minus": the need to regularly inject a lot of suspension assemblies. It would seem like a complete mess, but not a single bearing or other unit of an imported serious off-road vehicle with so-called life-long lubrication can withstand regular water and mud baths. The grease will necessarily be washed out with all the ensuing consequences. And it will be enough to additionally sprinkle the "UAZ" after the assault. And that's all. That is why lovers of trophy-raids are trying to cut the good old Soviet "oil cans" into all significant places of their foreign cars.

A little about these extreme off-road lovers. They really have a lot to learn. First of all, the techniques of driving and dedication, readiness to work for wear, and secondly, the approach to preparing their cars. But there are quite serious buts here too.

My approach differs radically, mainly due to the fact that for them everything is entertainment, for me it is work. Moreover, this is a collective sport. That is, if extreme people are looking for the most impassable in impassable places, and then happily dig up and pull out the stuck equipment, then all the time I had to find the only possible way amid the pitch darkness. It didn't always work out. Sometimes the car rushed to a more or less dry place, the equipment was hoisted on the hump and - forward ... It is especially fun when, in late-late autumn, when crossing a river, you meet on a muddy "beach" prints of wolf paws (well, at least not bear ones), but hands busy and weapons, except for the warehouse, no.

Therefore, I had to improve myself no longer in extreme mud driving techniques (although this too), but in finding workarounds, squeezing between trees and the like. You, as a potential "survivalist", will also clearly not have time for sports excitement - adrenaline will be enough without it. Now about the preparation of the machines. I have already said that the "nurse", no matter what she is called (for example, as in the pictures, UAZ-3909 "Farmer"), by itself, from the factory, is already ready for exploits. Again, cars “prepared” for off-road driving, unfortunately, require completely non-standard parts, from special shock absorbers to self-locking differentials. All this, firstly, is not cheap, and secondly, it is necessary to order either from abroad, or in specialized centers, or from our craftsmen. Which is unrealistic under PostAP conditions.

It doesn’t look like extreme monsters - it’s an ordinary “UAZ”, but even with it, in my opinion, some alterations are unnecessary for a number of cases. For example, for not very watered areas, there is not much point in snorkeling and corrugated bend exhaust gases... If you are not going to overcome rivers more than a meter deep, you can do without all this. Except for every fireman ...

From those really necessary for any region:

- an electric fan (not only for overcoming water obstacles, but also for good cooling of the engine at high speeds when driving slowly over sand and mud);

- winch (no comment);

- hoses for exhausting gases to the air vents of the front and rear axles (here they very often end up under water, which can easily get into the crankcases when stopped).

Everything else - according to your wallet and desire. But, at least, you will not find any such exotic in "Siberian Hunter".

But in general, for a very reasonable price, you can buy a wonderful device. Really high cross-country ability, widespread spare parts, unpretentiousness, a huge salon with the possibility of various transformations, two stoves and so on and so forth. If you wash it regularly, then even the notorious perforating corrosion can be avoided for many years, but if this happens, a welder with the skills of a vocational school student can easily cope. The only thing, comfort was a little bit of a play, especially for the driver, for example, air conditioning ... Although, if there is at least some kind of craving for technology, type in a search engine something like: air conditioner based on Peltier elements... He just has a 12 volt power supply.

And yet: how do the rest of the UAZs look against this background - the descendants of the 469th and other Patriots? Yes, not bad cars, there you can even splash boiling water on the manifold without fear of filling the entire cabin with steam :). But in fact, the absolute majority of the goals and tasks with which they can cope, it is quite possible to give a short "Niva". But the post-AP "expeditionary" based on the "nurse" is a really unique car. Let's stop at this, perhaps.
