We first saw the second generation of the BMW 1 Series in official photos on 5 June. And it should be noted that the first reaction to the novelty was questionable. Then the front of the car was hit by critics. The fact is that presumably the new 1 Series was supposed to receive a smaller version of the nose from the 5 Series - aggressive and elegant, in the style of BMWs of the Adrian Van Hooydonk era.

However, the Bavarians chose a different path and amazed everyone. The design turned out to be very unusual for BMW, because of the huge "teardrop" headlights, flowing over the fenders and the excess free space between them and the radiator grille. But it is worth noting that at one time the first generation of the "penny" was also called an ugly duckling against the background of older models.

And then everyone got used to it and "tasted" the most democratic BMW model, which for many turned out to be an entrance ticket to the premium segment. Until the last production season, the 1st generation was the most requested model of the company. So in June of this year, 526 cars were sold in Russia, which amounted to 18.7% of all BMW Group Russia sales.

In general, the new first series is almost unchanged, with the exception of the front end. The car became a little wider, longer and taller, but the increase in dimensions did not affect the weight, the model added only 20 kg. Motor

On the tailgate of our test BMW, there was a nameplate "118i" - for an uninformed motorist, this used to mean that the car was equipped with an outdated 2.0 derated engine.

But everything is changing, and the Bavarian automaker made a decision, unpopular among conservative fans of the brand, to switch to turbocharged engines. Now the BMW 118i is equipped with a 1.6-liter turbo engine from Mini cooper S II with 170 hp. First, we tested the overclocking dynamics. Passport data indicate acceleration to "hundreds" in 7.5 seconds. Reactive dynamics is noticeable up to 130 km / h, but then abruptly disappears, probably due to the small volume of the engine. Feels like the maximum 222 km / h will be very difficult to recruit. During the tests, the fuel consumption did not exceed 10.5 liters per 100 km, which is quite good compared to other older BMW 1 Series models.

The presence of a turbine has almost no effect on the behavior of the car, pickup is present, both at the very bottom, and in the region of 5000 rpm. The new motor has another advantage - quiet operation. On idle and up to 1500 rpm the engine runs very quietly and is almost inaudible in the cabin, this is given the fact that the sound insulation level has remained the same, and, unfortunately, it is lower than that of other BMW models.

A small disadvantage of the motor is the presence of an oil dipstick, and not an electronic one, as on most BMW models. It is unlikely that anyone will like to once again raise the hood and measure something there.

The bonnet is now opened by double-pressing a lever in the passenger compartment, eliminating the need to manually search for the latch and get your hands dirty. One more technical innovation for the new generation, there was an eight-speed automatic transmission installed on older series. The Bavarians pride themselves on the fact that the BMW 1 Series is the only model in its class with such a transmission.

It is impossible not to notice that the new "automatic" does not switch as smoothly as on cars of the 5 series, but it certainly provided fuel economy and better dynamics.

Suspension

The BMW 1 Series is much softer, although the suspension remains largely unchanged. The new Run-Flat tires played a big role in this. Their maximum driving distance without pressure has decreased, but the sidewalls of the tires have become softer. So, now there is no need to change tires immediately after buying a car, as it used to be customary for many BMW fans. However, another misfortune of Run Flat - the influence of rutting - could not be defeated.

The interior of the novelty has become prettier, of the main changes it should be noted the central tunnel, which has increased in size, respectively, the front seats are located farther from each other. Now the driver and passenger will not touch each other with their shoulders. A little space was added in front, there was space above the heads. The radio and the climate control system have changed places (it's not customary to look for the volume control somewhere above). The Idrive monitor is visually enlarged with a black bezel.

Sports seats have become more comfortable for plump people. The combination leather sports seats (as pictured) are included in the Urban package.

The back has also become a little freer, but there is still very little legroom. But now individual air conditioner deflectors are provided for the rear passengers, located on the central tunnel.

The designers of the BMW 1 Series have taken care of the possibility of a comfortable meal in the car. There are two normal, and not covered with an armrest (as in the old "kopeck"), holes for glasses are already in the basic set.

If cup holders are not needed, they can be closed with special plugs.

The rear-view mirrors have increased in size and become more comfortable. For the first time in the history of BMW, they are equipped with direction indicators, which are noticeable not only to drivers passing from the side, but also to those moving behind the car.

It is worth noting three very useful options that will be included in the basic configuration on the new BMW 1, and on all other new products:

Drive mode switch. Next to the gearshift knob is a lever that allows you to select the driving mode. This option has three positions: Normal, Sport and Sport +. In practice, changing the mode affects the response of the motor to the accelerator pedal and the sensitivity of the electric power steering. It is worth noting that none of the competitors of the BMW 1 Series can boast of such an option as standard.

Let us dwell separately on the new economical mode.

EcoPro. The developers themselves position this function as a kind of game, the task of which is to save money. maximum amount fuel. First, we select the settings. To achieve 100% of the effect of the option, the speed must be limited to 90 km / h. and it is advisable to completely turn off the air conditioner.

But not everyone will agree to such "Spartan" conditions. 70% of the Eco Pro's potential is enough to save a couple of extra liters of gasoline. In this mode, the throttle trigger becomes wadded, and instead of an economizer, advice appears on the monitor with what force it is better to press the gas pedal.

The new key has become noticeably larger, which is not at all pleasing.

Starting the engine without a key. Doesn't give completely free access. To open / close the car, you still have to use the keys, but to start the engine, just press a button. This is very convenient when you stop when you need to get off, but it is dangerous to leave your keys, for example, at a gas station.

Start-stop system. This option automatically turns off the engine when stopped and starts when you press the gas pedal. Many people don't like this system, but new motor works so silently on Idling that if you don't listen specifically, you will hardly notice how it starts up. If, nevertheless, this does not suit you, the system can be turned off.

The capacity of the trunk has increased, because the main increase in the length of the car fell on the rear overhang.

Diesel engines are very reliable, but when buying cars with such an engine, you need to understand that they are demanding on the quality of oil and diesel fuel, plus diesel motors need to be serviced more often than gasoline ones. And if previous owner neglected these requirements, then you will have an expensive repair fuel system and turbines.
