39 BMW body years of release. Bmw e39 specifications model history photo video

For the first time, the BMW 5-Series e39 car was presented to the public back in 1989. And only 6 years later, the new "five" became available on automotive market... Its presentation took place at the end of 1995 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

She is the fourth generation. The prefix "E" originated from the German word, which is translated into our language as "expansion", "evolution", "process". These are the most accurate epithets that could describe the development of the Bavarian designers.

It is worth noting that the fourth modification took into account the shortcomings and errors of the previous generation model, which was based on the body. The engineers paid special attention to the suspension, the characteristics of which have significantly improved.

Specifications

For the entire production time, as many as 7 power units were involved.

The youngest were considered two gasoline engines, with a volume of 2 liters, which produced 150 horse power... The only difference between them was that the top speed of one was 220 km / h, and the other was 212 km / h.

The younger diesel version boasted a volume of 2 liters, producing 136 horsepower. Reached a top speed of 206 km / h.

The older diesel engine had a volume of 2.5 liters, could produce 143 horsepower, and accelerated to 211 km / h without any problems.

The most powerful is the M-series power unit, with a volume of 4.5 liters, producing over 285 "horses", and boasting a top speed of 250 km / h.

Innovations of the fourth generation BMW 5-Series e39

Fifth bMW model the fourth generation was the first to use a lightweight suspension. Bavarian designers have succeeded in reducing the vehicle's EC by almost 40%. Such a fantastic result was achieved through the use of aluminum, the share of which, in the body material, is very significant.

The lighter suspension has greatly improved the ride level and made the ride more comfortable.

It is worth noting that aluminum has also been used in some problem areas bodies that were previously highly susceptible to corrosion. Therefore, it is not surprising that the car successfully resists rust.

Also, we must not forget that the exhaust system is largely made of stainless steel, which contributes to a longer period of trouble-free service.

Car enthusiasts appreciated the new, significantly improved sound insulation system, which was considered one of the best at the time. The main secret of its success was the fact that double glazing was used in the cabin, which blocked external noise.

Interior equipment BMW 5-Series e39

The base sedan model is the 520i. It boasted a two-liter engine capable of producing 148 horsepower. At the same time, fuel consumption in mixed mode was 9 liters per 100 kilometers.

1997 was marked by the fact that the developers released a station wagon. It was equipped with the same engine and its consumption was 13 liters in the city, and 7 liters on the highway.

The list basic equipment car included:

  • climate control system;
  • multifunction steering wheel;
  • cruise control;
  • Bluetooth headset;
  • heated mirrors.

Additionally, it was possible to order a heated steering wheel function.

It is worth noting that all the necessary buttons were located on the steering wheel, which greatly simplified the control process.

Each driver could individually adjust the position of the steering wheel within two planes, which, at that time, was considered a rarity.

The front row of seats is equipped with adjusters. Each passenger has the ability to customize the position of the seat. There was a function "broken back of the BMW", which made it possible to separately adjust the lower and upper part of the seat back.

The highlight is the floor accelerator pedal. This decision made motorists very happy, however, many did not like the fact that it was too tough.

Crash tests, organized by the European independent organization NCAP, demonstrated a good security system. The car was awarded 4 stars, which can be called a good result.

The back row of seats is a comfortable sofa that can accommodate three people. However, the average passenger will feel some inconvenience, as there will be a large transmission tunnel under his feet.

The luggage compartment of the sedan is 460 liters, and the station wagon - 410 liters.

In all powertrains, the blocks were made of aluminum. Bavarian engineers claimed that thanks to new technology, their engines won't break. In support of this, the cylinders inside the motor were coated with nickel, which should have significantly increased the life of the engine. However, it soon became clear that such a coating wears out quickly, and as an alternative, they began to use cast iron cylinder liners.

At the very beginning of production, the car was equipped with three gasoline units and one diesel unit. These are 520i, 523i, 528i and 525tds.

The whole line gasoline engines equipped with six-cylinder blocks. Jr gasoline unit produces a power of 150 horsepower, and the oldest - 193 horsepower.

The diesel version produces 143 "horses".

In 1998, the company began producing the most famous model - BMW 5-Series e39 M5. An eight-cylinder V-shaped engine was used as a power unit for the new modification. M5 was considered the first sedan, the engine of which could produce as much as 400 "horses". He also inspired its volume, which was 5 liters.

It is worth noting that the M5 began to use new system DV in charge of management 2 camshafts.

The fuel delivery system has also changed, which contributes to a more economical ride.

Restyling

Since 1999, BMW engineers have carried out several restyling of the "five". It is worth noting that the appearance has hardly changed. Basically, the modernization concerned power units and "stuffing". All six-cylinder engines from that time are equipped with two camshafts. Plus, at the same time, the range of diesel engines increased, to which the M5 joined, with a CR injection system. The development of this injection system was carried out by BOSCH.

The year 2000 was marked by the fact that it was then that the most ambitious restyling was carried out. This time, the changes concerned the appearance, in addition, three new engines were added. Updated sedan got new side lights, a modernized false radiator grille and a new bumper.

Also, since 2000, they began to install M54 series engines, which significantly increased the power and functionality of the units.

A little later, another modification appeared - 520d, which was equipped with a two-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 136 horsepower. Acceleration time from zero to hundred is less than 11 s.

The fourth generation model was produced until 2003, and the M5 modification - until 2004.

For the fifth generation, the E60 body was already used. However, according to the authoritative German automotive publication AutoBild, it is she who is the most successful sedan in the history of the automotive industry.

At the moment, it is quite difficult to purchase a quality BMW 5-Series e39. And if there is such an opportunity, then it is advisable to do it in Germany or, as a last resort, in Poland. An excellent car is considered to have no more than two owners, and its value is not less than $ 5,000.

Video

In this article you will find out whether it is worth getting in touch with the purchase of a BMW E39. We will find out what points you should pay attention to and how to buy the right car.

The new generation of the fifth series in the back of the E39 appeared in the spring of 1995 in Geneva. In 1995, only a sedan was available to buyers, and only two years later the Touring station wagon came up to release.

Body

The BMW E39 has a solid body and a simple body repair, it is assembled and disassembled several times, the salon is also easy to disassemble. The joints between the gaps are minimal the body has anti-corrosion treatment and high quality paintwork... The body of the BMW E39 has become more modern and attractive.

Rust, can appear due to chips, or if the car has been in a serious accident. The chips can be used as a bargaining chip. Due to reagents, sills, the bottom and bottom of the trunk can rot, so you should take a closer look at these places before buying in order to avoid further surprises.

You should visually see the gaps at the body, they should not be as wide as a finger. It will not be superfluous to take a closer look at the numbers of the glasses, the numbers of the front left and front right must match, similarly with the rear ones.

BMW has provided a huge range of paintwork options. Below you can contemplate some of them. This is only a small number of them in fact, hundreds.

Salon

The salon of the five has always had rich equipment and the BMW E39 is no exception. It has: climate control, cruise control, directional stabilization system (DSC) and of course on-board computer... Later versions, since 2000, boast a device for storing the parameters of the driver's seat, with three positions and in some versions even breaking backs.

And, of course, one cannot remain silent about the high quality of interior materials: soft plastic, wood or aluminum inserts, leather or fabric seats. It all depends on the configuration of the car. The only thing the salon is not famous for E39, and of all fives, with large dimensions, has not very large capacity - this applies to the rear passengers. A tall man, sitting in the back, has his legs resting on the front seat.

BMW E39 engines

A wide range of engines was installed on it, ranging from 136 strong diesel with a volume of 2.0 liters, and ending with a 400 strong 4.9 liter powerful naturally aspirated engine, which was put on Her release began in 1998. This model was installed inline sixes, which were the most common on this model, eight-cylinder engines were also installed on this model.

The E39 engines were equipped with a system Vanos and double-Vanos. This is a valve control system that allows you to change the valve timing depending on the nature of the ride.

Engines before 1998 had a nikasil coating instead of cast iron liners. Thanks to the nikasil coating, the engine became lighter, but in our conditions, with our gasoline, it collapses, and the compression in the cylinders begins to fall and as a result low-quality gasoline, the cylinder heads are destroyed. Later, the Germans began to use an alumina coating, which increased the reliability of the engines so that it would be better to choose cars from 1999 so it would be more reliable.

BMW E39 engines reliable enough, but they are prone to overheating, this hereditary passes from generation to generation. Often the culprit for overheating is the electronic thermostat, it is short-lived, and quickly fails. To prevent overheating, it is necessary to clean the radiator every year. Before buying, if you are not sure about the serviceability of the viscous coupling, it is better to replace it, it may cause overheating.

All motors are equipped with a timing chain, which increases reliability, but do not forget that it stretches over time so that, if necessary, it is better to replace it; after replacing it, you will forget about it for a long time, its resource is about 300 thousand km.

Eight-cylinder motors are more prone to overheating, and fans fail more often. The radiator is clogged with dirt and dust. It must be cleaned regularly so that it does not clog and overheat. It is recommended to do this once every six months.

The best option is to choose a BMW E39 after 1999 to avoid problems with engine overhauls. A good option the ratio of power and economy is 2.5 liters
192 h.p.

Weak engines up to 170 hp s, it makes no sense to take, the expense and tax are almost the same.

From diesel engines, it makes sense to take a closer look at the M57 530d 193 hp. A big plus is its consumption, the power does not exceed 200 hp, which also has a beneficial effect on the tax. It can be noted that this motor is not prone to oil consumption and has a decent resource. It is also possible to resort to to increase the power.

Transmission

E39 transmissions are reliable, you should make sure that they do not ooze oil, otherwise, you need to urgently replace the oil seals. All Bmw this model is rear-wheel drive. Three types of boxes were installed on this car: a 5-6 speed manual and a TipTronic automatic with the ability manual switching... All boxes are highly reliable. The machine breaks down only with a sharp and aggressive ride. On mechanical box over time, the gear shift sleeve and the gearbox stem oil seal fail. The automatic transmission serves 250-300 thousand km before intermediate repairs.

Electrical equipment

This thing is pretty capricious. This model does not have very reliable electrical equipment. All because of its abundance, and not because of the quality, there is too much of it. Often the contact between the loops of the information displays and the board disappears. As a result, the display is not clear. Interestingly, humidity can affect the malfunction.

There is also a problem with the climate control. From time to time it starts to take independent decision: distribute air flow, refusing to regulate air flow. The way out is replacing the electronic control unit. It also affected the window regulator mechanism. There are plastic parts, they are flimsy and often break.

On the previous model, this mechanism proved to be more reliable.

Suspension

Compared to it, there is an abundance of aluminum parts in the suspension, which improves handling and comfort. On our roads, the suspension travels no more than 40,000 km. In eight-cylinder engines, the front suspension is more reliable, it is made of cast iron. Another disaster became steering rack, which began to be installed on this model. On our roads, it is short-lived, it walks where 40,000-60000 km and then regularly empties the owner's wallet. And here the eight-cylinder engines turned out to be more reliable, they still have the good old worm gearbox.

Advantages and disadvantages , according to the owners:

pros Minuses

For the first time, the fourth generation of the BMW 5-Series was presented to the public at Geneva Motor Show in September 1995. The Touring station wagon debuted a little later, in 1997.
Compared to the BMW E34, the E39 cabin has improved noise insulation, and the quality of finishing materials and workmanship has significantly increased. Despite the seeming spaciousness and solid appearance, the E39 is not so spacious inside. Like its predecessor, the new "five" was designed around the driver. The rear sofa is not very spacious and clearly not designed for three people. There is less legroom here than German classmates, although two passengers in the back will be comfortable. The ceiling is quite low, and landing in the cabin is not very comfortable - due to the large wheel arch, the doorway is narrow.
The trunk will not seem very big for a car of this class - "only" 460 liters. The luggage compartment of the station wagon also loses to classmates - 410 liters versus almost 600 liters for the Mercedes-Benz E-klasse. For a surcharge, the Touring was equipped with a retractable luggage compartment floor. Frame with glass in back door the station wagon can open upward separately from the door itself.
"Charged" version of the "five" - \u200b\u200bmodel M5 from sports division BMW Motorsport GmbH was released in October 1998. Those wishing to buy the Bavarian "wolf" should remember that the M5 is an original model that has a number of differences from the usual E39, and this applies not only to the "filling". Some body parts have also changed, even the rear-view mirrors have become different. The car was equipped with a 4.9-liter V8 engine with 400 hp, a sports suspension, a reinforced transmission, as well as a special aerodynamic body kit, which, however, was optionally installed on conventional modifications.
But the B10 5.7 model, released in 1997 by BMW Alpina tuning company, became an absolute exclusive. The 5.7-liter 12-cylinder power unit installed on the car develops 387 hp. And the maximum torque is as much as 560 Nm! In total, about 500 cars were produced.
At the end of 1999, the assembly of BMW E39 523i and 528i for the Russian market was started at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad. These cars differed from their German counterparts in a special package for "bad" roads and lack of a catalyst.
In the fall of 2000, the BMW five was upgraded.

Restyled versions differ from cars of early releases with new headlights with characteristic marker lights in the form of rings, made on LEDs (the so-called "angel eyes"). Front fog lights changed the shape from trapezoidal to round. The bumpers, direction indicators and taillights have also changed. The moldings were painted in body color. The line of power units has also been updated.

Body and equipment

The history of the BMW 5 E39 began in 1995 and ended in 2003, having gone through one restyling at the end of 2000. Traditionally for a Bavarian manufacturer, the whole machine is built around driver's seat... This does not mean that the passengers were infringed, just the driver was given maximum attention. Despite the rather impressive dimensions of the car, the cabin is not as spacious as it seems from the outside, but with a height of up to 190 cm it will be comfortable for everyone, even those sitting behind the driver.

The quality of finishing materials and assembly is at a height, door cards are most susceptible to damage. Noise isolation at the "five" - \u200b\u200bon the five (5.5 point scale), it is desirable to additionally "de-noise" the doors, especially if you like high-quality sound in the car. Native music is also not perfect, cassette recorders are often included in the package, if there is a CD changer, then you will not see MP3, but this is easily removable (if you have money left after the purchase).

But the equipment of the car is most often pleasing, since even in the "base" it already relied: power accessories (mirrors, windows), air conditioning, 6 airbags, hydraulic booster, ABS (anti-lock braking system), ASC + T (traction control system) and DSC III ( electronic system stabilization). Moreover, cars with richer equipment are often offered for sale, for example, dual-zone climate control is almost the norm.

The most noticeable change after restyling was the front optics, then the famous "Angel Eyes" were born. The taillights and direction indicators have also changed, the fog lights have become round, and the moldings on the bumpers have been painted in body color. The decorative grille was changed and the steering wheel design became M-style. The line of engines has also been updated.

The body of the BMW 5 E39 is very resistant to corrosion if there was no damage. Even the highest quality refurbishment will no longer return the metal's former resistance. And with the current regime of city traffic, as well as taking into account the pace of movement of the owners of BMW, there are not many unbroken copies left. But he who seeks will find.

BMW 5 E39 engines

The engine is the heart of any car, and in the case of BMW, this expression becomes even more relevant. For a rather heavy E39, the optimal power / cost combination, many consider the 2.8-liter engine (193 hp), after restyling it was replaced by a 3-liter (231 hp) one. If we take into account that fuel consumption and total maintenance costs for all 6-cylinder engines are approximately the same, then it makes sense to buy 2 liter BMW 5 E39 just doesn't. As a last resort, you can take a 2.5-liter engine if you find a well-groomed copy of the "five".

On the BMW 5-series, in the back of the E39 installed such gasoline engines:

M52 -reliable in-line six-cylinder engines. Displacement: 2.0 (520i), 2.5 (523i), 2.8 (528i) liters. Since 1999, they have become repairable, until that time, motors were produced with a nikasil coating of the cylinder walls. This coating is very sensitive to the sulfur content in gasoline (and this goodness is enough in our fuel). Sulfur destroys this coating, after which the engine cannot be restored and repaired. Since the end of 1998, a modernization was carried out, the M52 engine was equipped with cast-iron inserts (sleeves). Modified engines are designated M52TU.

M54 -the R6 engine, which was installed after restyling. Displacement: 2.2 (520i), 2.5 (525i), 3.0 (530i) liters. Differs from M52 more power (2.5 liter M54 192 hp, and 2.8 liter M52 - 193 hp), another intake manifold, electronic throttle and gas pedal, as well as another engine control unit.

M62 -V-shaped eight-cylinder engine. Displacement: 3.5 (530i), 4.4 (540i) liters. In the production of M62, nickasil coating was also used, but in parallel with it, alusil coating was also used - a stronger and more reliable material that was not affected by sulfur. After March 1997, the Bavarian manufacturer began to use only alumina coating. The updated engine, marked M62TU, also received a "Vanos" variable valve timing system, which is described below.

In BMW 5 E39 engines, they began to use the revolutionary, at that time, camshaft adjustment system, which control the intake and exhaust valves... Thanks to this system, on low revs the torque has increased greatly, and the car accelerates well from the very bottom. There is “just vanos”, which regulates only the intake valves, such as were installed on the M52 before restyling, as well as on the M62TU. And also "double vanos" (Double Vanos), which already controls the exhaust valves, which allows you to get even traction in almost the entire range of revolutions. This was installed on the M52TU and M54.

The only disadvantages of this system are repairs. The average service life, with proper maintenance, is 250 thousand km, depends mainly on the quality of the oil. Changing the complete system will cost from 1000 $, but there are repair kits that are much cheaper (40-60 $ without replacement work, for a "single-nose engine"). In some cases, the repair kit will no longer help, only a replacement. Signs of a "dying vanos": poor (sluggish) thrust up to 3000 rpm, rumbling or knocking at the front of the engine and increased consumption fuel.

On the BMW 5-series, in the back of the E39 installed such diesel engines:

M51S and M51TUS - diesel engines with high pressure fuel pumps. The working volume is 2.5 liters (525tds). Fairly reliable (in good hands), the timing chain runs 200-250 thousand km, the same is the turbocharger. After 200,000 km, the injection pump will also be repaired (expensive). The electronics of the engine control often flounders.

M57 - more modern turbodiesels, already with direct injection fuel (Common Rail). Displacement - 2.5 liters (525d), 3.0 liters (530d). In general, the M57 is more reliable and more powerful than the M51, subject to the use of high-quality diesel fuel (in our reality, this is a difficult condition). The engine mounts are very complex and cost a lot of money. Of all diesel engines 530D (184 HP - M57, 193 HP - M57TU) is the most preferred option, but necessary highly thorough diagnostics before buying.

M47 - the only four-cylinder engine in the entire E39 series. The working volume is 2.0 liters (520d). With turbine, intercooler and Common Rail system - develops 136 hp. Appeared after restyling, in fact, a small M57.

Common problems for all engines that may be encountered bMW owners E39:

Weak cooling system, oversight of which is fraught with the "death" of the engine. The main culprits are the auxiliary fan motor, thermostat, dirty radiators and neglect of regular coolant changes. It is highly recommended to clean the radiators (with disassembly), at least once a year (if the runs are small, then once every two years). On V8 engines, coolant expansion tanks often burst, and the average "life" of cooling fans is 5-6 years.

Another sore is the ignition coils, which do not like non-original spark plugs very much, and the original ones with our fuel are enough for 30-40 thousand mileage. But the cost of one coil is $ 60, and one separate coil is relied on for each cylinder. Electronics can also disturb lambda probes ( oxygen sensors, there are already 4 of them on the E39), an air flow meter and a crank position sensor and camshaft... Not necessarily all this "happiness" will fall on you, and right at the same time, but to prevent this from happening, do not spare money for diagnostics before buying an E39.

BMW E39 gearbox

Both the mechanical and automatic gearboxes that were installed on the BMW 5 E39 are quite reliable, but the “human” factor is always present. Mechanical gearboxes mainly 5-speed were installed, with six steps only the M5 version and some 540i were produced. After 150,000 km of run, the plastic bushing of the shift lever often wears out (it starts to dangle), and oil seals can also leak. The manual transmission service schedule is 60,000 km, at the same time it is necessary to change the oil in the gearbox. Before purchasing oil, check for decals on the box and gearbox as they indicate the type of oil required. It is highly discouraged to buy a car with a "dead" clutch, because when replacing a clutch, you often have to change a dual-mass flywheel, which is expensive. With quiet operation, the clutch can "retreat" and 200,000 km, but in reality the average service life is about 100,000 km.

If a automatic transmission thoroughly diagnose before buying (there should be no jerks, jerks, switching should be imperceptible), then there should be no problems in the future. In most automatic transmissions on E39, oil is filled for the entire service life of the car, that is, there is no need to change it. And this is the subject of eternal controversy on specialized BMW forums. One side believes that if everything is working properly, then the oil does not need to be changed. The other side argues that the manufacturer, on average, lays down 250-300 thousand km of service life. And if you do not change the oil every 80-100,000 km, the oil will lose its properties, and the filter will become clogged with dust from wear of the clutches, which will lead to the failure of the box. All service stations support the side for regular oil changes.

Undercarriage and steering part

The suspension of the BMW 5 E39 is clearly designed for the German autobahns, in our harsh realities of the resource of both the front and rear suspension not long enough. Some people think this is due to the aluminum suspension, but metal has nothing to do with it. Aluminum is used to reduce weight and does not affect suspension life, but cost. Silent blocks, ball bearings, shock absorbers and stabilizer struts fail. Silent blocks change separately, but ball only with a lever together, but "walk" about 100,000 km. The stabilizer struts are almost a consumable, you can safely take it in reserve, since you will have to change it every 20-30 thousand km. On the E39 with R6 and V8 engines, in the front suspension there are different levers, shock absorbers and steering knuckles, they are not interchangeable, and the chassis is more durable on the eight-cylinder versions.

On versions with V8 steering also much more reliable, paired with such heavy motors, reliable worm gearboxes were installed. And on the R6 they put ordinary steering racks, which do not shine with special reliability. For some time, the knock can be removed by adjusting, then restoration or replacement. There are two types of fluid in the steering system, mixing leads to leakage and "death" of the power steering.

You won't be able to forget about the rear suspension either. You can start with the stabilizer struts just like the front. In second place in terms of replacement frequency are “floating” silent blocks, there are 4 of them with an average mileage of 50,000 km (Sino-Polish no more than 20,000 km). Rear suspension arms are assembled only. Front wheel bearings, by the way, also change only together with the hub.

When servicing the running gear of the BMW 5 E39, it is recommended not to delay the elimination of individual breakdowns or knocks, it is better to eliminate the problems gradually than to find yourself with a car with a completely "killed" suspension. One broken silent block can accelerate the destruction of the rest of the suspension several times.

The BMW 5 Series was once one of the best cars in the E segment. It fascinated with the harmony of lines that, with the light hand of designers, skillfully combined a dynamic image and elegance. The E39 generation is over 20 years old. Therefore, do not deceive yourself, the Bavarian "fives" arrive in old age, especially pre-styling modifications. Nevertheless, the silhouette of the BMW remained timeless and is still capable of arousing admiration today.

The interior design should also be recognized as successful. The simple front panel contributes to maintaining the highest level of ergonomics and exemplary readability. Fans of the brand appreciate the driver accents - the slightly unfolded center console. The upholstery and plastic in the cabin are of the highest quality. Thanks to this, the inside of the car looks relatively fresh, despite the years that have passed.

The biggest problem with the BMW 5 Series cabin is the small space. Passengers on back seat... In addition, the 5 Series has a relatively small trunk - 460 liters, which is less than such prominent representatives of the segment as the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Klasse. The station wagon holds from 410 to 1525 liters of luggage. Fortunately, the boot is well shaped so that you can use up one hundred percent of its volume.

Which engine should you choose?

From the point of view of economy, it is generally accepted that diesel modifications are most preferable. However, in the case of the BMW 5 Series, there is a number important points... Among diesel versions, the 525 tds models are predominantly common. The 143-horsepower turbodiesel does not provide excellent dynamics (10.4 s to 100 km / h), and thus turns out to be gluttonous. In city mode, such a BMW burns more than 11 liters of diesel fuel. Also wear out piston rings, the fuel pumps and the cooling system pump fail.

The 530d engine is more reliable. The 3-liter turbodiesel accelerates the "five" to 100 km / h in 8 seconds. Power unit works quietly and is more economical than the tds series diesel.

Among diesel modifications, there are also 520d and 525d models. 2-liter diesels are too weak, but consume less than 8 liters of fuel in the city. However, savings from low flow fuel will not be able to cover the cost of eliminating frequent malfunctions. 136-horsepower motor has problems with fuel pump, turbocharger, dual-mass flywheel and alternator pulley. The 525d is slightly more economical, but slower than the 530d.

In the range of gasoline engines, the most common 2-liter unit with a capacity of 150 hp. because of large mass The 520i is well suited for relaxed drivers. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 10.2 seconds, and fuel consumption in the city will be at least 12 liters per 100 km.

The 523i, 525i and 528i are more dynamic. The best driving performance is guaranteed by the 2.8-liter 193-horsepower engine. Unfortunately, due to the high fuel consumption, this car not cheap to operate. The 525i is by far the best choice. Engine power reaches 192 hp, and acceleration to 100 km / h takes 8.1 seconds. You will have to pay with a relatively high fuel consumption - about 13 liters in the urban cycle.

The 3-liter inline petrol six has electronic choke, aluminum block with cast iron liners and variable valve timing on both camshafts... According to the mechanics, this is the last really hardy Bavarian inline-six. The only major problem relates to the design of the crankcase ventilation system. Its valve should be renewed every 2-3 oil changes.

Gasoline engines installed under the hood of the "five" are considered quite reliable. As a rule, only the cooling system needs attention. A faulty thermostat, cooling fan, or radiator can easily overheat the engine and result in costly overhaul... All motors use maintenance-free chain drive Timing

Chassis.

The five E39 had a reputation best sedan in the late nineties and in the new millennium. This is due to the almost entirely aluminum suspension on both axles. The body does not roll in corners, the wheels seem to be glued to the road surface - the suspension provides comfort and confidence in movement. The steering precision also impresses.

Unfortunately, the poor condition of Russian roads significantly affects the condition of the suspension. The bushings of the front wishbones, bushings and stabilizer struts are rented quite quickly lateral stability, floating silent blocks. Maintenance suspension may require up to 20,000 rubles. BMW Owners The 5 Series believes that the suspension needs a major overhaul every 100,000-150,000 km.

Typical problems and malfunctions.

The Bavarian sedan often has electrical and electronic problems. Affected by faults: temperature sensors climate control, airbags, ABS and level xenon light... In addition, to breakdowns the slopes of power windows and a set of indicators, the display often burns out.

Among mechanical damage common: loss of tightness of the radiator, the appearance of play in the steering and wear elastic coupling cardan shaft... Another common problem is fogging headlights.

Generally, a well-maintained BMW E39 is not considered problematic, but this does not mean that operating costs will be low. High prices for spare parts and consumables, in the end result in a decent amount, substantially covering the cost of maintaining a car of a less prestigious brand.

Market situation.

The BMW 5 Series E39 was an overwhelming success in the market. Despite the high prices, around 200,000 vehicles were sold worldwide each year. The high demand in the past has contributed to a fairly impressive number of proposals for secondary market... Thus, today the opportunity is given wide choice... But in order not to run into a time bomb, you need to be very careful! Car sales portals are simply packed with copies after serious accidents or worn to death.

As for the equipment, then everything is simple: what bigger engine, the larger the equipment list. Basic modifications have at their disposal a set of airbags, power accessories, climate control, and the top versions, even in our time, can impress with a colossal list additional equipment... For the BMW 5 2001-2002, they ask for a lot today - about 300-400 thousand rubles.

Conclusion.

BMW 5 Series is a good alternative family car... It is able to subdue the driver, and passengers will appreciate the quality of the interior decoration and the high level of equipment. Gasoline engines are considered the least problematic. During operation, you will often have to deal with suspension and electrics.

BMW body, salon 39 is a modification of the famous "fifth" series, the car was produced from 1995 to 2003 inclusive. Its predecessor was the E34 body, and the E60, which had a completely new style for BMW, became a worthy replacement (continuation). The main model in the BMW E39 family is the 520i. She had two-liter motor, which gave out power of 150hp, and after tuning and restyling 170hp. The M5 version car was first released in 1998. It was equipped with a V8 S62 engine, which was made on the basis of the M62B44 engine.

Modifications of this series (with the exception of the M5 and 535) were available in station wagon and sedan bodies. Modifications to the M5 and 535 were made exclusively in a sedan body.

ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

The model in the back of the BMW 39 was first presented to the general public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1995. The design changes compared to previous models (eg E34) were quite significant, much larger than all previous bodywork generation changes. Generally speaking, the body bmw size e39 came out less angular, branded familiar double headlights began to be closed by a common shade, "nostrils" - the edging of the radiator grille acquired a more round shape.

A center console is installed in the BMW salon in the 39 BMW body, according to tradition previous generations, slightly turned towards the driver's side. The increase in the wheelbase allowed the manufacturer to increase the passenger compartment space for rear passengers.

Suspension bmw cars 5 body 39 is almost entirely made of aluminum (the exception to this rule are models with V8 engines, where cast iron is used), this measure has a positive effect on the handling of the car, significantly reducing its weight. It turned out that the mass of the suspension (unsprung) decreased by 36 percent. Improved design bmw body 39 rear suspension, has a "steering" effect rear wheels, which improves the handling of the car on the road. In order to better distribute the weight of the vehicle along its axes, the BMW 5 battery size 39 body is located in luggage compartment under the decking.

In the spring of 1997, the Touring station wagon appears, the car is 90 millimeters longer than the sedan and heavier than its 100 kilograms. The lineup engines identical to the sedan, in addition to the standard equipment is supplemented by two additional airbags (side). The vibration of the bmw body, on the e39 bmw is drowned out by good sound insulation.

Production begins in 1998 Bmw series M5. The car was equipped with an uprated 5-liter V8 S62 engine, which is structurally similar to the serial 4.4-liter M62B44 unit, which was equipped with the Double-VANOS system, had eight individual throttle valves... Moreover, for the first time production model BMW Salon E39 body received a 400hp engine. However, unlike the E34 series, no M-wagon based on the E39 body was produced. Officially the only one in the world by BMW The M5 E39 touring station wagon is considered to be ordered by the head of M GmbH.

Since 1999, the model has received several design changes, these changes were completely related to the engines, the dimensions of the body, the interior of the BMW 39 did not change, and did not affect the design of the car body at all. The main changes were improvement - 6-cylinder engines received control of camshafts in the Double-VANOS system, and 8-cylinder engines received vANOS system only for inlet valves, plus added exhaust system two-stage catalytic converters for exhaust gases, this allowed the bmw 39 bmw bodies to comply with Euro4 requirements in 2005.

In 1999, an 184-horsepower diesel engine appeared, which had an undivided combustion chamber, and the CommonRail injection system, was equipped with a turbocharger, and on the 530d model also an intercooler for air. The car is capable of a speed of 225 km / h, and the fuel consumption in the extra-urban cycle is less than 6 l / 100 km.

At the very end of 1999, the first cars appear bmw brands Salon 39 body on the roads of Russia, which were assembled at the enterprise "Avtotor", Kaliningrad region.

Since the beginning of 2000, a low-cost model 520d appears, having a 2 liter 4 cylinder direct injection diesel engine. The BMW 525d is a more powerful car that replaces its predecessor, the 525tds, which had a 143 hp diesel. The new model bmw saloon 523 body 39 has a 2.5 liter 6-cylinder diesel engine with direct injection, turbocharging, is equipped with a CommonRail fuel supply system and its power is 163 hp.

The E39 is undergoing a restyling in September 2000. The updated top five can be externally recognized by its original lighting technology, which is made according to modern technology CELIS, more rounded mirrors and bumpers. The vibration of the bmw body of the bmw e39 in the cabin is drowned out by proprietary vibration isolation, bmw remains at the proper level of comfort and quality. The main changes, however, are hidden inside the car - there are three new M54 engines for the next models 530i, 525i, 520i. All engines are in-line models 520i, created on the basis of a 2 liter unit. After increasing the piston stroke from the standard 66 to the forced 72 millimeters, the displacement of the cylinders increased from 1991 centimeters to 2,171 centimeters (cubic), and the maximum power increased from 151 hp. up to 170 hp at 6250 rpm. The dimensions of the e39 bmw in the 39 body remained unchanged.

The second engine is a forced 2.5-liter unit from the 523i model, in its modernized version it develops not 170 hp, as before, but as much as 192 hp. (523i index was replaced by 525i). The third engine for the 530i, which first appeared in mid-2000, on the 3 Series models is a 3-liter engine with impressive power - 231 hp. To his design features include hydro-filled silent blocks, they wear out quickly, but they better dampen all vibrations.

The model was produced until 2003, then it was replaced by the E60. BMW M5 E39 was produced until 2004, then it was replaced by BMW M5 E60. Station wagons were also produced only until 2004.

BMW 7 E39 in the back of 39 is presented below.

In 2000, it happened again new restyling bMW cars... All subsequent cars in the "fifth" series 39 salon, BMW body began to be produced in an updated form:

  • The side lights (parking) of the headlights receive a new, rounded shape like "angel eyes"
  • On taillights there are transparent direction indicators, and also parking lights made by LED.
  • The radiator grille takes on a new, three-dimensional look.
  • The design of the bumper 39 body of the e39 bmw has changed slightly, the front fog lights have turned out to be a completely new style.
  • The steering wheel is designed in M-style.
