What is better Opel Corsa or Volkswagen Polo. What is better Opel Astra or Volkswagen Polo sedan which is better

Greetings to all)

Compare: VW Polo sedan 1.6 mechanics, basic equipment, new price - 450 thousand

Opel Astra sedan 1.8 automatic, luxury equipment, new price - 770 thousand.

I drove the Polo for almost a year, sold it with a mileage of 6500 km - I drive an Astra 2 months mileage of 2000 km.

Dynamics: Polo up to 100 in 10.5 seconds - Astra up to 100 in 11.4 seconds.

But this is according to the passport, and in real life Astra is noticeably faster from the start due to the electronic pedal on the Polo, which reacts with a delay, although if the speed is above 150, the Polo picks up faster.

Comfort: Astra's suspension is softer, swallows bumps / holes much better. The Astra also has better sound insulation and keeps the warmth in the cabin longer. The space in the Astra in front is more space and more comfortable, but in the Polo there is a little more space in the back, by the way, and the Astra has the largest wheelbase in the C-2703 mm class. in Astra, much higher quality plastic, the roof is soft, the instrument control buttons are more convenient. The seats in Astra are leather + fabric with lateral support, more comfortable, but there is no such thing in the Astra base ... The basic seats are the same as on the Polo. The presence of pockets on the backs in the front seats Astra is useful, although the Astra base does not have them either. Astra has a noticeably better audio system - 7 speakers versus 4 in the Polo. There is no rear lighting in Polik, as well as a rear armrest, and in the basic Polo, the rear sofa folds completely, and in Astra already with bases separately.

In general, in terms of comfort, the Astra surpasses the Polo, it is felt that it is still class C, and the Polik is class B, and the price difference is almost like two Polos.

Consumption per hundred km: Polo city 7 liters, highway 5 liters. Astra city 12 liters, highway 8.5 liters.

The difference is palpable!

Practicality: Astra's ground clearance is higher on 16th discs, Polo was on 14th discs. Trunk volume Astra 490 liters, Polo 460 liters - the difference is not noticeable.

Visibility in Polo is better.

In general, the Polo is one of the best in class B, and the Astra is one of the best in class C. There is a difference in consumption, price and comfort. Both cars are good and neither publishes any extraneous noise and does not bring problems.

The only thing I would like on Astra is a mechanic)

Opel Astra III or Volkswagen Golf V - which is better?

Once upon a time Volkswagen golf was the undisputed leader in his class, and his rivals tried to imitate him in every possible way. But today the market situation is completely different. Modern models Volkswagen is not as reliable and competitors are clearly approaching. This is clearly seen in the comparison example.

Smooth start

Both cars are assembled quite carefully, but the individual elements of the Golf are more precisely fitted. In addition, its innovative door allows the outer skin to be removed for bodywork in the event of damage, eliminating serious impact marks. However, such repairs are more expensive and more complicated. Later in new Volkswagen models departed from such a decision.

In crash tests, both cars earned five stars, but detailed comparison on individual points indicates the minimal advantage of the Astra.

The Astra, like the Golf, is thoroughly protected against corrosion. Weakness Opel fragment of the tailgate under the chrome strip. In Golf, traces of rust can sometimes be found on doors around windows and on pillars, in places where the door seal touches.

In terms of interior space the Golf is a little better - it provides more space for rear passengers. The cargo opening of the 5-door Astra is slightly smaller than that of the Golf, but the trunk is more capacious: 380 liters versus 350 liters for VW.

The quality of the interior fittings is controversial. The front panel of the Astra does not greatly admire its appearance and, unfortunately, creaks in most instances. After a small upgrade in 2007, the quality has improved and the trims of the Elegance, Cosmo and Sport versions already deserve respect. At first glance, the inside of the Golf is exemplary: excellent build quality and good materials... But if you look closely, it's not perfect. The rubberized coating will cover the power window control buttons and door handles. Well-equipped Asters dominate the listings for sale. Golfs, as a rule, have more modest equipment, but they are more expensive.

Taking into account all the pros and cons, it is difficult to determine the clear winner in the first round. Both cars deserved a draw.

Score for Astra

Opel astra has a very simple suspension: MacPherson system on the front axle, and a torsion bar on the rear. In the front levers, you can separately change the ball and silent blocks. There is practically nothing to break in the rear beam. All dots above the "and" are placed by a large ground clearance... Thanks to all these advantages, Astra is ideal for our terrible roads. The service life of ball and other connecting elements is not very long, but their replacement is simple and cheap. The only exception is the sporty Asters with the IDS + system, i.e. with shock absorbers of adjustable stiffness. There are no substitutes, and the cost original spare parts estimated in tens of thousands of rubles. But fortunately this headache only owners sports versions... The rest can sleep peacefully.

The front suspension of the Golf also does not cause any serious problems. Rear mounted multi-link suspension... Its design is quite strong, but used copies of the initial production period will most likely require putting the suspension in order, which may take about 6,000 - 7,000 rubles.

Golf is equipped with electric amplifier steering, Astra - electrohydraulic. Both systems are reliable enough, but in the event of unforeseen malfunctions, they can empty a wallet worth 10,000 rubles.

In the chassis comparison, the Astra wins.

Motorized dilemma

The range of Golf powertrains is impressive in its abundance. Unfortunately, the vast majority of available engines are modern and advanced design requiring increased costs for Maintenance and repair. The FSI and TSI designations hide the system direct injection gasoline. For car enthusiasts who reckon with the costs, only three engines can be recommended: the immortal gasoline 1.6-liter 8-valve unit, the diesel 1.9 TDI (although it works too loudly) and, as a last resort, the petrol 1.4-liter 16-valve engine (Not particularly impressive, but not unnecessarily bothering with problems).

The Astra engine lineup is impressive too, but here the vast majority of motors can be taken into account. A good choice would be a turbodiesel borrowed from Fiat - 1.9 CDTI: powerful, economical and reliable enough. Isuzu's 1.7 CDTI is not perfect, but many owners are still happy with it. The 1.3 CDTI is also borrowed from Fiat: it uses very little fuel, but is much better at handling the lighter Corsa.

Note: most diesel opel have a particulate filter. Its presence can be identified by a sticker on the B-pillar on the passenger side. If the value 0.5 is displayed in the last line of characters, then the filter is present. If 1.2 or more, then it is absent. Due to the fact that filters on Opel models create many problems during operation, some drivers remove them.

Petrol engines Opel Astra are famous high consumption fuel, average performance and good oil appetite. However, they do not cause serious problems. Typical malfunctions connected to the EGR valve, throttle and oil leakage. After restyling, the manufacturer refused to use valve lifters (applies to strong versions of 1.6 and 1.8 liters). You can check this by decrypting VIN number.

In this comparative stage, Astra wins, although it should be admitted that two good engines for Golf (1.6 8V and 1.9 TDI) is enough.

Issue price

And now we come to the most important question - the price. The Astra is definitely cheaper. Is it worth overpaying? Finally, the best choice will become a more expensive Golf with an unpretentious and durable 8-valve 1.6-liter gasoline engine.

Those who prefer diesel, it is better to step over the stereotypes and pick up Astra 1.9 CDTI without particulate filter... It will be a well-equipped vehicle, usually in much best condition than a comparable golf course.

Opel Astra in technically less perfect than the Volkswagen Golf. However, she is declared the winner. The Astra is cheaper and less costly to operate. Drivers who often travel on bumpy roads will love its robust suspension. In addition, when traveling, they will appreciate its frugal, high-torque and not too noisy 1.9-liter diesel engine.

We continue to consider cars of segment “B”, and this time the guests of our section will be purebred and very popular cars in Europe - Opel Corsa, VW Polo and Ford Fiesta. There they were sold in hundreds of thousands a year, and in Russia their market fate was successful.

In 2008 Opel corsa about 30 thousand cars were sold, Ford Fiesta - 9500. As for VW, its result in this class was significantly lower, “kids” from the eminent German manufacturer scattered around our cities much less. The fact is that in Russia a small VW turned out to be more expensive than all its competitors, including those considered in this article, and significantly more expensive, not by 10-12%, as in Europe. Therefore, the number of proposals among the three-year-olds Corsa, Fiesta and Polo is appropriate. But you can find a car of any model in good condition. And which of these models is better is up to you, and we will help you in making a decision.

General information

Unlike us, Europeans do not understand a “B” class car with a sedan body. The concept of beauty and prestige there, west of Brest, is somewhat different. Therefore, all three cars were offered only in the form of 3- and 5-door hatchbacks. Small, up to 4 m long, they are quite spacious inside, and the trinity's luggage racks have a volume of 270-280 liters. This is enough for a young family without children or with one child, and for an elderly couple. And if you fold the rear seats in any of the cars in question, you get a cargo platform with a volume of about a cubic meter. Small refrigerator or Washer fits easily.

Another difference between us and Europe is the attitude towards diesel fuel... European configurations, be they Corsa, Polo or Fiesta, have at least two offerings of extremely economical and high-torque heavy fuel engines. We, Russians, have our own special pride, and we do not need urban consumption at the level of 5-6 liters of diesel fuel per 100 km. Therefore, all three cars were delivered to Russia only with gasoline engines... By the way, they also do not differ in "gluttony", the noble European origin affects, and there the appetite for gasoline, like that of the VAZ-21011 engine, is not welcomed.

Fiesta was the first of the three to enter our market - in 2002. Simple, convenient and relatively inexpensive, it immediately became popular. Well equipped in terms of comfort and a solid "good girl" in terms of passive safety, this car also turned out to be quite reliable, which did not diminish interest in it, especially considering the offer of power units - from a budget 1.25 liter engine on the most affordable Fiesta up to 2-liter (150 hp) on the "combat" Fiesta ST. Gearboxes - 5-speed manual Durashift and robots Durashift SE.

Three and a half years after the Fiesta, VW Polo arrived in Russia. This car is "Mr. Perfection" in everything except the price of Russian market... Because he has no other shortcomings. The ergonomics of the driver's workplace is standard, except for the "cyanotic" backlight dashboard which the Germans have held on for so long because "the customers like it." The space of the cabin - you will not find fault. The convenience of the trunk - no comments. Riding comfort is beyond praise. Stability and controllability - reliable, safe, “like on rails”. Etc. But the price of the new Polo, which was at least 20% higher than the price of competitors in comparable trim levels, cooled the consumer's ardor. And now, three years later, Polo is significantly more expensive than its peers, classmates, but this difference in absolute numbers is not so frightening. Therefore, choosing a “three-year plan” in this class of cars, it would be unreasonable to pass by this most worthy car, in the configuration and assembly part of which there are practically no flaws. True, Polo's proposal for secondary market not extensive.

Opel Corsa is the youngest of our trinity and the most "fashionable" outwardly car. Having appeared in Russia two years after the Polo, accompanied by an active advertising campaign in the media and with “no fanaticism” prices, the small Opel exploded in the market of new foreign cars like a bomb, leaving behind a bunch of competitors, including the Fiesta, in the sales ranking. Configurations, engines - for every taste: from a 1-liter 3-cylinder engine with a capacity of 60 hp. on the most affordable version up to equipped with a turbocharger high pressure 1.6-liter engine with 200 hp, which stands on a truly "hot" hatchback Corsa Turbo OPC. Transmissions - 5-speed manual, "robot" and 5-band "automatic". In general, among the “three-year-olds” Corsa, both in terms of the number of offers and quality, that is, trim levels, there is something to choose from.

From the perspective of the driver and passengers

VW, Opel and Ford have been competing in this class of cars for more than 30 years and have “finished competing” to the point that there are simply no cars of other brands that are as comfortable and practical at the same time as the “kids” from VW, Opel and Ford. There is a French "designer" technique like the Peugeot 207, there is a mega-practical Japanese car Honda Jazz, there is a cheap Korean technique, but such knights of many qualities as Polo, Corsa and Fiesta - alas! And if for you the point of view of passengers on the convenience and comfort and the possibilities of the trunk are one of the main factors when choosing a car, then I do not envy you, and I will not tell you. I don’t envy, because in this regard it will be difficult to decide. But I will not tell you, because I myself cannot decide which of these machines will be better. All three are great!

But there will be no problem to determine the driver's point of view. Ford Fiesta! As if Marcus Grenholm himself tuned the chassis of this car, so dashing, in a sporty way, it knows how to drive, responding not to the driver's actions, but to his thought. The steering wheel is an extension of the hands. Pedals, brake, accelerator - leg extension. MCP lever - with the clarity of a rifle bolt! If you want and can do it, skate along the trajectories. If you love and you go crazy - slide in turns, tucking the "muzzle" of the car to get out of the maneuver. Bravo! And so - with any engine. But the robotic MCP is not very suitable for flight purposes, it does not have a control program that provides flight modes. But there is a manual control mode, and if you use it, then no problem! And in ordinary, everyday modes of movement, the Fiesta knows how to be a good girl, calmly ride around the metropolis, maneuver and climb into any crevice.

As for the Polo, this car is the embodiment of the true German order on four wheels. Including from the driver's point of view. Do you want to drive calmly, comfortably and measuredly? To your health! Do you want to “jerk” on a bend? So it is without question! But any maneuver, both in quiet and active mode, Polo does smoothly, with dignity and endurance, reliably. He kind of condescends to the driver from the height of his Teutonic pedestal, allowing him to do whatever he pleases with him, and from any checkpoint. Five-speed "mechanics" or 6-band Tiptronic - everything works without problems and in any mode.

The Opel Corsa was not born for high-speed maneuvering. The chassis of this car is tuned primarily for safety and even in the most lively version. OPC Corsa shows a tendency to slip the front end in a steep bend, showing understeer. In quiet driving modes - no complaints. Neither to the suspension, nor to the steering, nor to the operation of the aggregate part.

In terms of cost of ownership: economy, maintenance, repair

Best of all keeps the original value of VW Polo. This brand is generally a champion in this discipline, and if you pay more when buying a Volkswagen car, you will gain more from its subsequent sale. This applies to almost any model German concern, including Polo, and this nuance is useful to keep in mind when buying a car of any class. For example, if you buy a three-year-old Ford Fiesta, you are more likely to lose out on the next sale compared to both the price-holding champion VW Polo and the Opel Corsa, which has a pretty good aftermarket listing.

When it comes to fuel costs, if you compare the Corsa, Polo and Fiesta, which are equipped with the most popular 1.4L engines on the market, you will not find a noticeable difference in fuel consumption. V mixed cycle(city plus highway) the whole trio consumes from 6 to 6.5 liters of fuel, and AI-95 gasoline is recommended for all three cars, although if you do not turn the engine “ringing” regularly, then the 92nd will also be “eaten” without any consequences. If only it was of high quality.

When comparing the cost indicators of maintenance and repair, several nuances arise. No, the cost of a standard hour and the corresponding sets of spare parts for carrying out maintenance work and maintenance does not apply to them, they are about the same. It's just that according to the Ford regulations, scheduled maintenance is carried out every 20 thousand km or 12 months (whichever comes first), for VW and Opel - every 15 thousand km or 12 months. That is, if you drive a lot, the conclusion about the preference for Ford seems obvious. But again, nuances, nuances, nuances ... If the timing belt for Ford engines has a toothed belt, which is supposed to be changed according to the regulations (except for the rare 1.3 Zetec Rocam), for VW it is the same, then all Opel Corsa engines, except for 1.6 turbocharged, are chain. And if you apply quality oils like GM Genuine Motor Oil, then before 250 thousand kilometers you will not have to climb into the timing drive. As you can see, there are points in Opel's favor, including for high mileage. There are positive aspects to the VW Polo as well. Although there is a timing belt in the timing drive, the interval for its replacement is very long, far beyond 100 thousand kilometers. And from all these nuances, a surprisingly simple conclusion follows: none of the representatives of our trinity have convincing arguments that could make the consumer lean in his favor in terms of the cost of maintenance and repair. Therefore, when choosing between Corsa, Fiesta and Polo, do not “bother” with this question. It is much more important to find a car in good technical condition, with a well-known and good operating history and, as a consequence, a large residual resource. Then you will not have to fork out for unscheduled work and spare parts - for Opel, and for Ford, and for VW.

Outcome

A VW Polo that can do it all ($ 11,000 to $ 20,000), a "steering" Ford Fiesta ($ 10,000 to $ 17,000) or a cute Opel Corsa ($ 11,000 to $ 25,000 for the OPC version)? You decide! This choice is not easy. But we've given enough hints. Have a good hunting!

Author Edition Auto Panorama No. 6 2011

In the biological world, the "law of the jungle" rules: the strongest wins. How is strength determined? First of all, in terms of complexion - whoever is larger is stronger! It seems that this principle also works in the world of cars.

In our "flock" the largest is Corsa. Its length in the three-door version is almost 3.82 meters, which is only one centimeter less than the Fiesta, but at the same time the Corsa is taller and wider. The "length" of the Clio is only 3.77 meters, and the Polo, with its 3.74 meters, is a clear outsider.

However, length is not the most important thing. Internal volume - this is the parameter by which today they give the palm to one or another car. Here again, the Corsa is ahead of the rest.

To begin with, luggage with a volume of 260 or 1060 liters (with the rear seats folded down) can easily fit here. Here Corsa surpassed even the Clio, which has long been considered the undisputed leader. Polo and Fiesta keep within the traditional compact class - their cargo capacity even with the "folded" back seat does not exceed 1000 liters (975 and 930, respectively).

Okay, luggage is an inanimate object. And how do those who have proper names and are able to autonomously move in space feel in cars?

Backseat passengers compact cars usually they experience a lot of torment: cramped, shaking, knocking ... Most of all, the "fetal position" is tiresome, in which you have to spend a lot of time getting to the notorious "point B".

The VW Polo turned out to be the most unfriendly to rear passengers, for which it received the lowest point in this nomination. Things are better at Renault, but not by much. Opel and Ford tied the first and second places with a 3+ rating. Riding in the backseat of these small cars is not easy either, but it is quite possible to survive and remain a full member of society.

The manufacturers took more care of those sitting in front. In terms of comfort - the lead for the Polo. And the indisputable: the most comfortable chairs with well-developed lateral support, the largest and most well-formed space. 5 points. The Corsa is forced to settle for second place due to not the most comfortable seats and a lack of space (compared to the Polo). Clio and its hospitality, rendered to the front riders, can be estimated at "C": cramped, moreover, you constantly slide off the flat seats. The last, with a score of "three-minus", is the Fiesta: even more cramped and uncomfortable, especially if the height is above average. But what do you want from a model that has remained virtually unchanged since the early 90s?

In terms of handling and visibility from the driver's seat, all four kids are about the same. The only disappointing feature is the Clio, which has suffered from some handling problems since its inception. Not enough passive safety the "old man" Fiesta and the "ascetic" Polo, however, showed relatively good results in the crash test.

Polo has the most elastic suspension, which keeps the car well on the road and does not emit extraneous sounds when crossing obstacles. He also does not tend to roll when changing lanes to high speed... However, due to some excessive stiffness, the suspension transmits through its mechanism the noises emitted by rubber, especially when the road surface is not too smooth under the wheels (gravel, for example).

The Corsa and Clio leave a more pleasant impression in this respect, which, however, is spoiled by too much roll during sharp maneuvers and suspension breakdowns at full load.

The Fiesta's crew suffers primarily from excess noise from the trim parts, not only when driving over small obstacles, but also when driving on rough asphalt surfaces. The reason is in the finishing materials, and not in the design and suspension settings. This creates an "empty barrel effect" that hard plastic can hardly cope with. We think that more than one owner of a front-wheel drive station wagon, born before the mid-80s, knows about this misfortune firsthand.

Despite the fact that the kids are equipped with diesel engines, in this case you cannot call them a source of increased noise: all engines are of a new generation, even in the Fiesta, which received a 1.8 DI at the end of last year.

The dynamics of our quartet are not impressive. But it doesn't upset either. For their class, cars accelerate well, even better than their gasoline counterparts with an engine displacement of less than 1.2 liters.

The maximum speed, in principle, is not bad, but in the Fiesta and Polo it is achieved with great damage to the driver's nerves - the noise and not very smooth operation of the engine in some modes are sometimes unbearable. And if for VW the only three cylinders can serve as an excuse, then Ford does not have this “excuse”.

The Renault Clio engine, which has a more solid displacement, also suffers from increased noise at high revs, but it runs smoother. Opel has reconsidered its attitude to the nervous behavior of the 1.7-liter diesel from previous years. The fine-tuning of the motor provided a fairly smooth operation throughout the entire speed range; the suspicious sounds he had made before disappeared.

At a lower than that of Volkswagen, the value of the maximum torque, the power Renault units and Opel are more flexible and feel more even traction.

In the category "Average Fuel Consumption" VW is slightly ahead of Opel. It seems that the designers from Wolfsburg were primarily focused on the efficiency of the engine, rather than on the culture of its work. Renault and Ford consume a little more diesel fuel, but they do not cross the line of five and a half liters per 100 kilometers.

Who, in the end, is "well done" and who is "sheep"? The first place, according to the "law of the jungle" mentioned at the beginning of the article, is for the Opel Corsa, which is larger than its rivals, carries goods better, behaves well in the city and on the highway, has good motor and relatively cheap.

Second - Volkswagen polo, tournament loser due to the nervousness of the power unit, close rear seat, and most importantly, a high starting cost - on average, one thousand dollars more than that of competitors.

Renault Clio received in our comparative test third place - due to chronic problems with handling and front suspension, as well as the peculiar operation of the power unit.

The outsider, as expected, was the Ford Fiesta. The years take their toll. No wonder in Cologne they have long been talking about the time to modernize the model. They say, apparently, not in vain: information has already been leaked to the press that in the near future a successor to the Fiesta should appear, significantly different from the current one. Of course, for the better.

As part of the opening automobile exhibition in the capital of Switzerland - Geneva (Geneva Motor Show 2016) traditionally announced the results of the annual competition - Car of the Year. The main award this year went to hatchback Opel Astra, which is a representative of the General Motors concern.
This "hatch" was able to score more than 309 points according to the voting results, ahead of its closest pursuer in the face of the Volvo XC90 crossover by 15 points. The top three in the "Car of the Year" competition in Europe was closed by the Mazda MX-5 roadster - 202 points.
The following also reached the final of this annual motoring competition in 2016: Audi A4 with 189 points, Jaguar XE with 163 points, Skoda Superb with 147 points, and BMW sedan 7-Series of the new generation - 143 points.
The main prize for the Opel Astra model was received by the head of the company - Karl-Thomas Neumann.
Recall that following the results of last year's Car of the Year competition in Europe, the winner in the main nomination was Volkswagen passat... Previously this prestigious award was won by Peugeot 308, Volkswagen Golf and Opel Ampera, Nissan leaf and Volkswagen Polo.

Nikolay It is generally incorrect to compare these cars, since the Polo belongs to the class "B" Boris, and the Astra belongs to the class "C" Yaroslav. That is, in general, the Polo should be compared with the Corsa, and the Astra with the Golf, and with such a comparison, the PV models win, since with the same high maintainability, the PVs are more reliable and pay more attention to the issues of comfort. Accordingly, PV will come out more expensive.

If you still compare Polo and Astra, I would advise, firstly, you personally take both cars for a test drive. Secondly, see Astra with a 1.6 engine - it is better suited for this model. And thirdly, if you plan to ride mostly alone, then you can take a Polo, and if with a company / family, then Astra drives.

Polished to a shine, Golf's perfectionism looks provocative: the prospect of setting a benchmark on its own course is extraordinarily motivating! And yet, maybe you shouldn't try to surpass the ideal in all respects? What if we simply offer a reasonable alternative, playing on the protest sentiments of those who do not want to think in stereotypes?

Sworn friends

Already the sixth Golf gives the impression of a machine devoid of any flaws. Such refinement captivates some, but to others it may seem boring. Indeed, from generation to generation "Golf" carefully carries the valuable genetic code, improving it as successfully as carefully. He is more likely to force himself to be respected in the process of acquaintance than to cause love at first sight: the production of spontaneous emotions at a distance is clearly not his path. Volkswagen is hampered by an innate restraint and pedantry, bordering on boring. He is not very interesting outwardly, but he is able to surprise with his intellect and skills, which you cannot immediately suspect in him.

Astra, on the other hand, clearly relies on its appearance: if we awarded for design, Opel would immediately snatch valuable points for itself. However, taste is an individual category: someone loves a priest, and someone loves a priest’s daughter. And yet, I am sure, unlike Golf with its deliberately neutral appearance, Astra is trying to make eyes at the very moment of acquaintance, promising unforgettable moments of passion. Even the 5-door hatchback looks very seductive, demonstrating the spectacular plastic of the sidewalls, and even the three-door GTC is openly trying to seduce with appetizing forms. Beauty is a terrible force!

Kinesthetic or visual?

The interior of "Golf" at first glance seems simple, but only against the background of "Astra". It would be more correct to call it laconic. However, visual contact does not give the whole picture: to the touch, Volkswagen seems much richer than it looks. The space is flawlessly organized: mutual understanding with the machine occurs on an intuitive level. The steering wheel, upholstered in silky leather, lies ideally in the hands, information from the devices is read by peripheral vision, the climate control does not raise any questions. Everything, whatever you take up, seems ideal: buttons, keys, twists are laid out in their rightful places and are on alert. You have not yet thought what exactly you want to adjust or tune - but everything is already done.

Manipulations with the basic RCD-310 audio system do not require a thoughtful study of the interface, and even the more complex "head" of the RCD-510 allows you to work with it without first studying the instructions - especially since the touch display removes many questions. You can only find fault with the sound stage: it seems that the music is coming from the left. However, this can be easily compensated for by adjusting the balance.

But the most noticeable step on the road to perfection was the driver's seat. Perhaps, tall drivers will not experience problems, but the short me (170 cm) thought that the seat was too high even in the lowest position, forcing me to move closer to the steering wheel. This feature of ergonomics is even more noticeable against the background of "Astra", the front seats of which seemed more hospitable. In addition to standard set the seat adjustments are complemented by a movable cushion segment that allows you to make it longer. An extremely useful bonus!

From the point of view of design, the interior of Opel looks much more attractive and modern: it is easier to love it with your eyes than Volkswagen. The quality of the finish at first seems to be no worse than that of "Golf", but upon careful study, the glow of enthusiasm weakens: in some places they have saved on materials. And ergonomics gives rise to criticism: the devices are not so transparent for perception, the interface multimedia system more confused, and the flickering of the buttons on the center console causes brain cancer. Finally, the "Astra" has noticeably worse visibility, which was spoiled by stupid triangular windows near the front and rear pillars and a small rear one.

Beauty requires sacrifice

Obviously, "Golf" was built not from design, but from function. It is enough to look at both cars in profile to understand that the Volkswagen is much more "square" than the Astra. Easy access to the rear row of seats provides rear doors more regular shape, which form a wide opening. The sofa does not hide behind the body pillar, and this minimizes the risk of hitting your head during landing. In the center of the back row, you can organize an armrest by pulling it out of the back; and his kinematics is such that he is held quite high, without forcing him to reach for him with his elbow. But this is an option.

By default, the Astra does not have an armrest either. In terms of space on the couch, Opel resembles Volkswagen, but is inferior to it in terms of legroom. Loses "Astra" and for the convenience of landing: the lowered window line encroached on the opening of the rear door, and the back of the sofa hid behind a massive body pillar.

Addition Subtraction

V basic configuration"Golf" is deprived of the sofa divided into two unequal parts: it can only be folded as a whole. But for an extra charge, it becomes what a practical hatchback should have, and also grows with a ski hatch. But if the back row is completely left at the disposal of passengers, then the truck from Volkswagen will turn out to be mediocre: the volume of the trunk is very modest.

"Astra" copes better with the transportation of goods. She not only has a more spacious trunk, but the back of the sofa can be folded out even in the basic version. For a surcharge, you can get an armrest with a hatch - however, the ski hole itself will be noticeably smaller than that of the "Golf". But as an option, Opel offers the Flex-Flo organizer, which allows you to organize an underground in the trunk, experimenting with the floor level. And this is good.

Blow harder!

Despite the fact that naturally aspirated power units appear in the price lists of both "Germans", cars with turbo engines look the most attractive. The optimal "Golf" is a 1.4TSI modification, which can be equipped with both "mechanics" and "automatic". The engine was a success: despite the modest 122 forces, it easily carries even the relatively heavy Passat and Tiguan, and even copes with the light Golf quite playfully! Volkswagen picks up speed in a dashing way - and it doesn't matter which gearbox the motor has to work with: controlling the acceleration is equally pleasant both on cars with “mechanics” and on “automated” versions with a “robot” DSG. The character of the engine is even, and the thrust is evenly spread over the entire rev range - just what you need in the city! I don’t presume to advise more modest units: the 105-horsepower 1.2TSI is not much cheaper, but with even weaker engines the Golf will lose much of its dynamics.

"Astra" also starts with naturally aspirated engines, but flourishes only with a 1.4-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 140 forces. True, having a horse advantage over Volkswagen, such an Opel does not drive so cheerfully: it pulls worse from the bottom, and starts throwing forces only when it is no longer needed. And the 6-speed automatic transmission takes a bribe for its services. Even the 180-horsepower 1.6-Turbo version does not feel better than the 1.4-liter rival! "Mechanical" modifications accelerate faster, but Volkswagen still leaves a more pleasant impression: it realizes its potential by an order of magnitude higher.

Fewer doors, more fun

Chassis "Golf" - one of the best (if not the best) in the class: this is confirmed by the very first turns. The steering wheel is extremely informative, the rolls are moderate, and the tires stick so tenaciously to the asphalt that it seems as if the hatchback will easily pass along a steep wall. The confidence in the car grows in proportion to the speed. The larger the numbers are measured by the speedometer needle, the more you become imbued with the capabilities of the car: the Volkswagen firmly holds the straight line and is absolutely reliable in turns. The brakes are perfect: the pedal is sensitive but firm; and the pressure in the system is controlled not by the movement of the pedal, but by the force of pressing. Super!

"Astra" leaves a not so complete impression. The brake pedal is too mobile: against the background of the "Golf", its travel seems too large. However, this in no way affected the efficiency of the system - you just need to get used to the nature of the slowdown. But an overly light and empty steering wheel is already a more serious drawback: you have to grope the trajectory in the turn. The limiting capabilities of Opel are not worse than those of Volkswagen, but you can understand this only by thoroughly rolling into the car - while the Golf immediately reveals its charms. In any case, "Astra" does not so clearly strive to share the joy of driving with a driver.

But this is only true for the 5-door hatchback. The spectacular three-door GTC rides in a completely different way! The reason lies in the Hyper-Strat front suspension, which steering knuckles rotate separately from the swinging "candle", allowing you to get rid of power steering. The steering wheel of the GTC is also light, but much more accurate and informative than that of the regular Astra. And that is why the 3-door hatch drives just as well as the Golf.

Flying gait

Volkswagen is assembled with precision care and does not publish a single extraneous sound... Even the voice of the motor, gradually breaking through the thickets of noise insulation, broadcasts exclusively to the point and does not irritate the ear. But only as long as there is even asphalt under the wheels. The road deteriorates, and the car begins to get nervous, and the hard edges of the pits and tram rails enter the salon through the plaintive clatter of the suspension, which is clearly not encouraging deviations from the norm. The car runs hard on bumps, forcing it to slow down thoroughly in front of potholes.

Opel behaves much more restrained: you won't scare it with broken asphalt. "Astra" rolls more gently over most road artifacts and does not annoy with comments from the suspension. The glamorous version of the GTC, which is equipped with larger shoes, also takes up the hardships of our roads quite steadfastly: even being shod in custom 19-inch sandals, the three-door demonstrates better smoothness than the Golf on 17-inch wheels.

Assets and liabilities

In 2009 EuroNCAP experts successfully defeated both Golf and Astra: both cars received five stars. Nevertheless, in relation to our reality, there are several important nuances... In any of the Golfs, you will find seven airbags: front, side, window, plus an air bag for the driver's knees. In addition, Volkswagen can add a couple more side airbags for the rear passengers.

"Astra" offers by default only four pillows (front and side), and inflatable "curtains" cost an additional 9,500 rubles - inexpensive, but still. But "Opel" even added the system to the basic versions dynamic stabilization, while Volkswagen requires 22,710 rubles for ESP.

It is also appropriate to mention here that EuroNCAP representatives have twice awarded Opel for innovations, noting the Opel-Ai traffic sign recognition system and AFL adaptive light, which can also be ordered in Russia.

The hum of turbines, snatches of sleep

This year, "people's motorists" have withdrawn from circulation the "Golf" with a stunted naturally aspirated 1.4-liter engine; and now the price list for a three-door with a 1.6 engine (102 hp) in the Trendline configuration starts at 603,000 rubles, which is three thousand more expensive than the most affordable Astra made by Essencia with a 1.4-liter engine with a capacity of 101 liters. with. In addition to the aforementioned safety features, such a "Golf" has front power windows, heated mirrors with an electric drive, and a central locking with remote control. The air conditioner is installed by default only on versions with TSI motors and TDI, and separately costs 43,240 rubles. For a 5-door body, you should pay an additional 22 850 rubles. In general, due to poverty, such a car will only be a pale shadow of a real "Golf".

Cars with turbo engines start at 616 thousand for 1.2TSI (85 HP), and with optimal engine 1.4TSI "Golf" will cost 676 thousand on the "hand". For DSG, you should pay another 66,000 rubles, which is quite immodest. But you still have to dial expensive options one by one: rear doors (22 850), ESP (22 710), multifunction display (2000), audio system (7020), fog lights (6730), steering wheel with music control buttons (10 860 ) is at least. If we add everything up, we get "Golf-1,4TSI-DSG" for 814,170 rubles.

A similarly equipped "Astra" with a 140-horsepower turbo engine and an "automatic" in the "Endzhy" configuration will cost 763,900 rubles. A significant difference! And if you set out to acquire the most cheap car for 600 thousand, then it will be quite suitable for life: it relies on air conditioning and "music".

The spectacular GTC is 12,900 rubles cheaper than a five-door, moreover, it can be taken with a 140-horsepower naturally aspirated 1.8-liter engine. In addition, the GTC has turbo engines 1.4 (140 horsepower) and 1.6 (180 horsepower) on the "arm", while on a regular hatchback to these power units the load must be "automatic".

WE HAVE DECIDED:

Golf is considered a benchmark in the class for a reason. Everything in it is good: the interior, driving qualities, and liquidity: at the age of three, and at the age of ten, Volkswagen can easily find a second, third, ... tenth owner. The biggest problem with Golf is the price: even though it looks much more affordable now than it used to be.

In comparison with the magnificent Volkswagen, the current Astra leaves a more blurred impression. However, we came to the conclusion that Opel did not yield a single point to its sworn friend. "Astra" is not so brilliantly controlled and has a number of complaints about ergonomics, but it still has a very decent interior, and the ride is higher. In addition, Opel has a larger trunk, which is also important. At the same time, the "Astra" looks much more elegant than the "Golf", which has set the teeth on edge, and the three-door GTC is a completely unique car for its money.
