After restyling, the new Ford Kuga has become somewhat easier to manufacture. There will be no more cars with "mechanics" in the lineup. The level of demand for such modifications was too low in order to establish processes of implementation, adaptation and logistics, making life difficult for production. A similar layout with a two-liter turbodiesel, which was offered in the pre-reform version. He, too, will no longer be in Russia, and even more so, niche versions of ST-Line and Vignale, available in Europe, are not expected.

But especially for our market, a version with a 2.5-liter aspirated engine, "automatic" and a drive to the front axle remained in service.

Ford-Kuga got an extended winter package and, of course, the Era-Glonass emergency communication system.

In rich trim levels, the crossover is ready to offer an advanced third-generation Sync multimedia complex with fashionable Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces and an eight-inch screen.

Finished cars are already being loaded onto car transporters and shipped across the country. Will they be in demand by the market? Before restyling Kuga noticeably inferior in popularity to "Tiguan", "X-trail", not to mention the RAV4. By the way, all of these cars are also produced in Russia. Anyway, in the last few years in the structure of the Russian market of new cars, foreign models made on the territory of the Russian Federation more than half.

By the end of the year, the plant plans to make 2,000 copies of the updated crossovers.

Recently, Ford announced prices: taking into account all marketing programs, the initial Kuga is offered for 1,149,000 rubles, although if we count without discounts, the price tag for the same car will stop at 1,379,000 rubles. The version before re-styling cost the same. This means that a significant change in demand is unlikely to happen, although a small surge in sales may have a novelty effect. But this is not enough to increase production to maximum capacity.

An all-wheel drive version with a proven and more affordable aspirated 2.5 would not harm, because a 1.5-liter turbo engine is not cheap and highly loaded, which raises concerns about the resource.

If in 2012 the plant worked in several shifts, now one is enough to produce the volumes required by the Russian market. The clock is 16 o'clock, and the welding shop has already been stopped. The maximum production capacity is 85,000 vehicles per year. This is not a figure at which it is profitable to globally automate production, so the share of manual labor is high. Moreover, the actual volume of output today is noticeably less, and this is with a discount for exports to neighboring states and government purchases.

As you know, "Focuses" and "Mondeo" often work in the service in the traffic police, and in Tatarstan, Kuga and even Explorer have found service use. The first works in the traffic police, the second serves middle-ranking officials.

Of course, the updated Kuga will remain in the company's lineup for at least several years. But practically tomorrow a more modern one will enter the market. Tiguan new generations. There are other competitors in the market. Therefore, he hopes not to have a radical change in fate in the near future. EcoSport and Fiesta lag behind rivals in terms of sales. All that remains is to hope for a bright future and play for a long time. This means that the course towards localization and cost reduction, the formation of a competitive price.

Factory in Russia

Entry to the Ford Sollers enterprise, built on the territory of the SEZ Alabuga, through the checkpoint and customs. This is not a stand-alone plant, but a whole production cluster. Along with "Ford" they produce here car glass Automatic Glass and stamped metal products by Dzhoshkunoz and Coskunoz. Unlike Togliatti, where the warehouse with finished products rests on the horizon, in Alabuga you notice only a small area with snow-covered Ford cars.

The official assembly line start of the modernized Ford Kuga, which we described above, served as a reason for a lively acquaintance with the enterprise. The pre-styling machine has been produced in the same workshops and on the same equipment since 2013. The continuation of Kuga's pipeline history sends a signal for optimism.

Among foreign automakers with production in Russia, the absolute record holder is Ford. Today the brand has three full-fledged factories in the Russian Federation: in Vsevolozhsk, Chelny and Yelabuga. And this is not counting the separate production of engines, organized on the territory of the same SEZ. Everything cars in the model range for Russia, they are produced domestically, and only in a full cycle - with stamping, painting and welding.

The construction and launch of large production facilities is a gigantic investment. Only in the Yelabuga site over the past five years (since 2011) about one billion dollars have been invested! And then there is a plant in Naberezhnye Chelny, which demanded to master 400 million dollars in American currency. According to official figures, the total spending on modernization Russian manufactures and the Ford Sollers lineup totaled $ 1.5 billion. In a market that has been falling for four years, this significantly complicates the situation for the automaker. However, the investments of other large concerns are comparable. For example, Volkswagen's total investment in the Kaluga cluster amounted to EUR 1.18 billion.

After the devaluation of the ruble, production in Russia partially reduces the retail price (although in reality there is no tangible benefit for the client) and theoretically make the product more competitive due to cheaper work force and the use of less expensive domestic components, such as tires.

Deep localization opens up export opportunities (Fords made in Russia are now exported to Belarus, Kazakhstan and Armenia), but the main thing, of course, is the benefits from the state, which are available on condition of widespread use of Russian components, because according to the late version of the 166th Resolution “On industrial assembly ", by 2018 automakers should bring this figure to 60%. Otherwise, the customs duty on imported parts will increase to 15% from preferential 0-5%. The exception is products made within the EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union), but the number of such is insignificant.

However, in the case of Ford, at least one of the sites is located on the territory of the Special Economic Zone, which by default provides for economic preferences. SEZ residents are exempt from property, transport and land taxes for up to ten years. Additionally, it is envisaged to reduce contributions to off-budget funds (i.e. payments to pension and insurance funds) from 30 to 14% (for personnel engaged in research and development and engineering). In addition, a free customs zone operates on the territory of the SEZ, which makes it possible to import technological equipment, transport, construction materials into the SEZ territory without paying customs duties and value added tax.

The free customs zone regime implies the absence of export duties on products supplied outside the Customs Union (Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan).

Ford Sollers currently has 70 partners and over 300 localized components. Stamped metal parts (the metal itself is supplied by Severstal and MMK) is brought to production from neighboring Coskunoz workshops, seats are made by Magna, insulation materials - Autoneum, locks and pedals - Brano, electronic auto components and elements of Bosch fuel supply and injection systems, rubber products, insulation, Saargummi seals. As you can see, the majority of Russian suppliers are well-known world names: Bosch, Magna, Lear Faurecia, etc., whose products in many ways also often consist of foreign component materials. From the point of view of quality and compliance with technologies, this is obviously not bad, but from the point of view of economics and the real degree of localization, it exposes the problem of localization of the first and second orders.

Hopefully, Russian suppliers of parts will be even better than foreign ones.

The degree of use of Russian parts for each model is kept secret by Ford, revealing only the general indicator of the Ford Sollers alliance. At the beginning of 2015, it was 40%, by 2016 it should have grown to 45%, and today it already exceeds 50%. The production of engines, which are made in a separate workshop on the territory of the SEZ "Alabuga", is now localized by 45%. Obviously, if not in fact, then at least formally, by 2018 Ford Sollers will reach the target 60%. This means that we, the buyers of Ford cars, will not overpay by supporting the Russian manufacturer.

Why not recall the events of almost ten years ago, when the first Kuga, assembled on the C1 platform, appeared in Russian salons ... The numbers "from 950 thousand rubles" then caused sighs and sighs. After all, for this money it was possible to buy eminent "Japanese", not to mention the "Koreans", and not the little-known "Kugu in a sack". With a very modest design, to be honest.

In 2012, the second generation of the SUV appeared, stylistically copying the Focus 3. This car did not cause a storm of emotions, but sales in a couple of years... Well, the localization of production in Yelabuga and the minimal, as far as possible, increase in prices made themselves felt. In the first half of 2016 alone, Kuga sold more than 4,500 copies in Russia. Not bad for times of crisis!

But even with decent ergonomics of the cabin, decent engines and transmissions, Kuge still lacked that shiny hook that would swallow a customer who was gaping with delight ... It is clear that not only her, but most of the rest are modern and utilitarian to the teeth gnashing of crossovers. Fall in love with this one? We (this is already known) Kuga will go with a simple 2.5-liter 150-horsepower aspirated, originating from the "Mazda" MZR. Europeans are not entitled to it, so we will tell you about this version on a full-fledged Russian test drive. As well as about the work of the intelligent all-wheel drive system, which is available in our version of the crossover, but does not stand out in any way on the track without the slightest turns.

The Kuga motor range for Europe is more than extensive. What is "tasty"

Almost any, even deliberately sharp, overtaking or detour maneuver is performed as cleanly as possible and with a minimum of movement. I will not stint on the praises of the suspension. In our ST-Line, it is equipped with stiffer shock absorbers and low-profile 19-inch tires, so the buildup and roll are minimal - the car turned out to be very driver-like. Considering that on the "ordinary" Kugah the structurally the same suspension (MacPherson strut in front and multi-link rear), globally cars for Russia should be the same "sharp".

An attempt to compare the behavior of the Kuga with previously tested competitors brought me only to the Mazda CX-5. The general composure and integrity of the car are very similar, but the "Ford" turbodiesel is better than any Mazda engine.

If not for the character

The McPherson independent front suspension and multi-link rear suspension remain unchanged features of the Ford Kuga in this generation. I have always associated Ford Kuga with a slightly raised Focus station wagon. The reason for this is the design made in the general style. And if for the Focus the licked forms were appropriate, then they did not go very well for the Kuge. The look of the crossover was clearly lacking in brutality, character, masculinity. And the restyling carried out a few months ago corrected the situation. Instead of a thin slot in the radiator grill, there is a massive grill, which added an impressive dose of aggressiveness and impudence to the exterior. At the same time, the bumpers, hood and headlights were changed, which received a bright and effective bi-xenon filling. The rear lights and the tailgate have been adjusted - but these innovations can be recognized only against the background of the pre-styling Kuga.

I jump into the salon and understand: they have managed with point improvements. Here is a new three-spoke steering wheel with a more comfortable rim to grip and optional heating. Instead of a mechanical parking brake, a key appeared parking brake, which made it possible to free up space for a niche with a neat sliding curtain.

The main reason for the pride of the Ford people is the advanced multimedia system with voice control SYNС-3. Compared to the previous one, it is much more productive, and the ability to interact with smartphones on Android and iOS platforms is also expensive - nowhere is it without it. Plus, instead of a small display on the center console, there is now a solid 8-inch touchscreen. And the navigator is now taught to lay a route taking into account traffic jams. Well, we can state that the lag behind competitors in the multimedia part has been successfully eliminated.

There is progress in the rest of the electronics. In particular, the Active City Stop automatic braking system now operates at speeds up to 50 km / h (previously up to 30 km / h). The self-parking operator now parks the car not only in parallel, but also perpendicularly. In addition, he will help you to leave the tight parking lot - for many it is still a task. Finally, Cross system Traffic Alert makes reversing out of the parking lot safer - it warns the driver with a sound and light signal if he rolls into the path of an approaching car.

It's good to be in a group of European auto journalists - while they, fighting with each other, smartly grab the keys to diesel modifications, I calmly sit in a gasoline Kuga - only they will be sold here. If the pre-reform car was equipped with 1.6-liter turbo engines, now their place was taken by even more modest 1.5-liter units. With the same power, they have reduced weight and fuel consumption. But this is in theory, which I have to test in practice.

I have at my disposal a front-wheel drive 150-horsepower modification with a 6-speed manual transmission. She rides briskly. The motor pulls confidently from the very bottom and does not sour at the top. And with the weapon clarity of Ford mechanics, I'm ready to sing hosanna at all. Therefore, I unconditionally believe in the promised 9.7 seconds of acceleration to a hundred. By the way, if the previous engine, when accelerating to the floor, squealed that there is urine, then the 1.5-liter unit is more intelligent - it does not break down to scream.

The Kugi chassis has not undergone any transformations. And rightly so: something, but the controllability did not arouse any complaints. On the contrary, the driving properties of the Ford crossover have caused and continue to cause extremely positive emotions. In terms of the sincerity of the steering effort, the stability on the trajectory, the delicacy of the stabilization system settings, only the Volkswagen Tiguan can compete with the Kuga.

And here is the shift change. Now it's time to get to know the flagship version. With the same displacement, its engine produces 182 hp. In addition, this car is not simple, but in the ST-Line sports body kit, which implies aerodynamic elements on the body, as well as a darkened radiator grille and lighting equipment. It looks intriguing, but it doesn't go as smartly as you expect. Acceleration to a hundred takes over 10 seconds. Too much for a flagship. Extra "horses" are lost in the wilds of the all-wheel drive transmission and 6-speed automatic 6F35. By the way, this box has switched to a more convenient principle. manual switching... Now the gears are changed with the usual paddle shifters, and not with a key on the selector, as it was before.

Be that as it may, I would not pay extra for a powerful modification. A 150-horsepower Kuga with a gun will not go very slow, but will cost less. How much? It's not clear yet. Prices will be announced closer to the New Year - when the cars will start arriving at dealerships. But judging by the fact that Ford is determined to increase sales of the Kuga and increase its share in the segment (now it is 4.5%), its value is unlikely to increase. Fortunately, the outlined strengthening of the ruble makes it possible to do this without any problems.
