Faults and engine repair 5S-FE

The Toyota 5S engine is the largest engine of the late S series. The engine uses the same cylinder block as on /, but bored out for 87.1 mm pistons, a different crankshaft with a stroke of 90.9 mm (was 86 mm), and two balancer shaft... The engine was released in 1990 and was in production until 2001, when it was replaced with a new 2.4-liter.
The 5S-FE engine, in comparison with other engines, has a significant plus, if the timing belt breaks, the valve does not bend, but you should not bring it to experiments, replace the belt every 100 thousand km and drive with peace of mind. During 11 years of production, the 5S motor has been modified and constantly improved, more on that below.

Toyota 5S engine modifications

1.5S-FE Gen 1 is the main engine. Shafts phase 220 with a rise of 7.25 mm, compression ratio 9.5, power 130 hp. Years of production: from 1990 to 1992, was put on Toyota celica V ST184 and Toyota MR2 SW21.
2.5S-FE Gen 2 - the second version of the engine, other camshafts with a phase of 218 and a lift of 8mm are used, power is 135 hp. The engine was installed from 1993 to 2001, onToyota Camry XV10 and Celica ST204.
3.5S-FE Gen 3 - the third generation of the engine, power 133 hp Installed from 1997 to 1999 on Toyota Camry XV20.
4.5S-FE Gen 4 - the latest version of the engine, power increased to 136 hp. Was installed on Toyota Camry XV20 from 2000 to 2001.

Malfunctions and their causes

In terms of problems and malfunctions, the 5S engine is a complete copy and you will not find anything new here.
As a result, we have a normal engine, nothing special, no innovations and supernatural technologies here, a typical option for an everyday car. It drives for a long time, a mileage of more than 300 thousand km is a common thing, a normal engine.

Toyota 5S-FE engine tuning

Chip tuning. Atmosphere

In the atmospheric version, you will not be able to squeeze anything out of the engine, of course, you can put an inlet-outlet, but the result will be ~ 5 hp, here you need to follow the path of the turbo ...

Turbine on 5S-FE / 5S-FTE

Light supercharging (up to 0.4 bar) will allow us to significantly increase the power and at the same time leave the engine as standard, and, accordingly, get by with minimal investments. We take the whole turbo kit from the CT26 turbine and intercooler, 360cc injectors, 63 mm exhaust pipe, SAFCII and get up to 200 hp. To increase the recoil, you need to replace the standard connecting rods with a 3S-GTE connecting rod, standard camshafts with tuning cams with a phase of 250-260, bore the inlet / outlet ports to 33.5 / 29.5mm, grind and put oversized valves from 3S-GTE with springs, fuel pump Walbro 255, customize everything. Nobody forbids putting the crankshaft and forged ShPG under a low compression ratio, light flywheel, Garrett GT35 and blowing all the money, but this is the lot of fans, not otherwise.
It is not difficult to notice, for the implementation of the urban turbo, we used components from the 3S-GTE engine, so the most logical, inexpensive, stable, reliable and correct tuning here is replacing the engine with a 3S-GTE.

A car for those who love comfort, very comfortable and very intelligent. Will give a warning if there is any problem in the system or suspension. Convenient air suspension, if necessary - raised to 260 mm or lowered to 140 mm. It is very convenient - in winter, if you sat on your belly in the snow, raised it and there are no problems. Also, an auto start is installed in the car, in the morning in a warm car it is nice. Full of all sorts of light, rain and other sensors - it's very convenient. The climate is two zones, you can make the passenger warmer and cooler for yourself. Also in the summer, climate control and again the auto start saves, you sit down in a cool swallow.

Citroen C5, 2005

Very comfortable, dynamic and economical car... Reliable and comfortable hydraulic suspension 3. Convenient and spacious salon... Very comfortable seats, especially the rear ones. The car is warm in any frost. The salon can easily accommodate 5 people. It is convenient for both the driver and passengers on a long journey. Roomy and comfortable trunk. Beautiful diesel engine - very quiet, few can distinguish from gasoline both in sound and in dynamics. Unusual design. Perfectly manageable on our roads. Demanding on the quality of fuel and oil. Requires knowledge and accuracy when servicing - do not approach with a hammer and a screwdriver.

Citroen C5, 2010

After 8 months of operation, the engine knocked. ((((After contacting the dealer service, Citroen representatives immediately began to look for the reason why they did not want to fix the engine by any means under warranty. They took gasoline for analysis to establish low quality gasoline, but this is excluded, since all previous and current cars my families refuel there and everything is fine! Under the guarantee, they do not want to do expensive repairs. I do not advise buying a Citroen, because for the second time I have a problem with the engine with this brand. (((And, despite the beauty of the body, inside the dust at any age of this brand. (((((

In general terms, Citroen is a complex and sophisticated car. For several years, the French automaker has been trying to prove that it is capable of creating simple and reliable cars.

A lot of good things can be said about engines too. Not only are they successful, but they are also durable and not expensive to repair. A really serious setback befell the motors of the Prince series - those developed in conjunction with concern BMW... We are talking primarily about 1.6-liter units: turbocharged THP and naturally aspirated VTi. Despite a number of improvements, problems with the timing chain tensioner and too high consumption the oils were never completely eliminated.

In recent years, Citroen in small models (including the C4) has replaced gasoline unit BMW motor own development - PureTech. He has direct injection and turbocharging, but devoid of one cylinder (R3). So far, only problems with the crankshaft are known - a one-time batch produced in Holland. It was made of too soft material.

Petrol engines

1.6 (TU5) - worthy of attention

The TU5 engine has a very simple design, and any malfunctions can be eliminated for little money. It is found in small models.

The TU series motor debuted in 1986 and is still in production. In the recommended JP4 version, it develops 109 hp. The most powerful versions went to the Saxo 1.6 VTS - 118 hp. and Citroen C2 VTS - 122 hp.

In 2012, the TU5 was installed in budget sedan C-Elysee. The 115-horsepower VTi version of this engine has nothing to do with the infamous unit created in collaboration with BMW.

The main enemies of TU5 are big runs and dismissive service. Oil seals leaks with age, but their elimination is not expensive. Due to the long production period and huge popularity, spare parts for this engine are quite budgetary.

Characteristic weak points Little. Ignition coils (from 4,000 rubles) and throttle (from 6,000 rubles).

The owners claim that the TU5 is not gluttonous. In small models, it consumes an average of 6.5 liters of fuel per 100 km. In addition, the motor lends itself to tuning.

Advantages:

High reliability;

Simple construction;

Good performance (especially in the VTS version);

Relatively low fuel consumption.

Disadvantages:

Many worn out motors with irregular maintenance;

Ignition coil problems.

Application:

Citroen C3 I - 1.6 / 109 HP;

Citroen C4 I - 1.6 / 109 HP (2004-2008);

Citroen C-Elysee - 1.6 / 115 HP

1.8 and 2.0 - better after 2004

No turbocharging, no direct injection and no variable valve timing. The EW series engines have a very simple design and easily tolerate the introduction of LPG.

The EW series engines first appeared at Citroen in 2000 and have been offered for 10 years. In addition, they were used by Peugeot, Fiat and Lancia. The EW series consists of 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 liter units. The last one is rare.

The engines of 1.8 l / 125 hp are considered the best in terms of reliability. and 2.0 l / 140 hp, except for the 2.0 HPi. It also develops 140 hp, but is equipped with direct fuel injection. The unsuccessful engine was installed in the first generation Citroen C5.

The EW series engines went to the largest Citroen models: the compact C4, the C4 Picasso minivan, two generations of the C5, the large C8 and the Jumpy van. The top version develops 177 hp.

The engine is rather gluttonous, so some people install HBO. A plastic manifold is used here, therefore, expensive modern gas equipment is needed.

Unfortunately, the reliable EW units are no longer in use today. The French concern in 2010 replaced them with problem blocks created together with BMW.

Advantages:

High reliability;

Simple construction;

Many various modifications, differing in volume and power.

Disadvantages:

More and more worn-out copies;

Mediocre dynamics of large models with 1.8-liter engine;

High fuel consumption.

Application:

Citroen Xsara picasso - 1.8 (at the beginning of production), 2.0 (until 2004);

Citroen C5 I - 1.8 (115 and 125 HP) and 2.0 (136 and 140 HP);

Citroen C8 II - 2.0 (136 and 140 HP).

Diesel Engines

1.6 HDi - better 8-valve

With this engine, the French proved that it is possible to create a reliable small-volume diesel engine. The 8-valve version is the best recommendation.

The DV6 series engine appeared in 2002 and is still installed in Citroen vehicles. Initially, until 2011, a 16-valve version was offered. First of all, its 90-horsepower version, which is equipped with a conventional constant geometry turbocharger, deserves attention. The flywheel is single-mass in all modifications. In 2009, a wet-type particulate filter was introduced. You should be more careful with the 109-horsepower version (16 valves) - the sieve in the lubrication system is clogged, which accelerates the wear of the turbine.

After modernization, the DV6 received an 8-valve block head and an additional letter "D" in the name (all versions are equipped with a particulate filter). Most often, a diesel engine has a power of 92, 99, 112 or 114 hp. and is characterized by a very good power-to-fuel ratio.

Turbodiesel can be found in small cars and even in the second generation C5. In addition, it was used in models of other brands: Ford, Mazda, Mini, Peugeot, Suzuki and Volvo. Thanks to this, spare parts are readily available and have affordable prices.

Advantages:

Good reliability;

High popularity;

Low prices for spare parts.

Disadvantages:

Many worn-out copies;

Stretching the chain connecting the camshafts in the 16-valve version;

Lubrication problems on the 109 hp version.

Application:

Citroen C3 II - 1.6 HDi 8V (92, 99 and 114 HP);

Citroen C3 Picasso - 1.6 HDi 8V (92, 109, 112 and 114 hp);

Citroen C4 II - 1.6 HDi 8V (92, 99, 112, 114 and 120 HP).

2.0 HDi - reliable and durable

The 2-liter diesel is one of the best of its kind. He debuted in 1999. Initially, only the 90-horsepower 8-valve version was available. A year later, a 16-valve version with 109 hp appeared on the list of proposals. In the process of further development, the output increased to 180 hp, and in Ford - up to 210 hp. (thanks to double pressurization).

The 16-valve version has camshaft problems similar to the 1.6HDi 16V. All 16 valve options are complete particulate filter, the resource of which usually does not exceed 200,000 km.

One of the advantages of the 2.0 HDi is its relatively low fuel consumption. In a middle class car, it is about 7.5 liters per 100 km.

Advantages:

Many versions;

High durability;

Cheap spare parts and good access to them.

Disadvantages:

The particulate filter is clogged;

The chain connecting the camshafts may be stretched.

Application:

  • - Citroen C5 II - 2.0 HDi (136, 140, 150, 163 and 180 HP);
  • - Citroen C4 Picasso I - 2.0 HDi (130, 150 and 163 HP);

A risky choice!

Engines co-developed with BMW (Prince series) should be avoided. They have good performance and low fuel consumption, but they have a number of disadvantages: increased consumption oil and an unreliable timing chain tensioner. In addition, in the turbo version, the turbine is sometimes rented, and in the atmospheric VTi - the variable valve timing system.

The 2.0 HPi (2001) is also considered unsuccessful. This is a representative of the EW series, but with direct fuel injection. This is where the controller often fails.

The 2.7 HDi 6-cylinder turbo diesel has serious problems with crankshaft... Much better priced successor - 3.0 HDi, but due to very expensive equipment (in particular, piezoelectric injectors) it is difficult to recommend it.

  • 1.4 VTi is the least problem engine one of those co-created with BMW. But it is not harmless.
  • 1.6 VTi - The lack of turbocharging does not mean no problems.
  • 1.6 THP - a high increase in power is achieved due to a complex design, which has a number of defects.
  • 2.0 HPi - how to screw up good engine? In the case of the EW series, it is sufficient to add direct fuel injection.
  • 2.7 HDi - certainly this unit is among the least worthy.
  • 3.0 HDi - it replaced the problematic 2.7 HDi in 2009. But his equipment is prohibitively expensive.

Started at a plant in Rennes, France in 2001. The car had versions with liftback and station wagon bodies.

Citroen C5 has retained its characteristic big cars hydropneumatic suspension. The third generation Hydractive system became structurally simpler and more reliable and was still devoid of springs and shock absorbers - their role was played by hydraulic cylinders and accumulator spheres.

Gamma power units consisted of gasoline engines 1.8, 2.0 and V6 3.0, as well as turbodiesels with a volume of 2.0 and 2.2 liters. Transmissions - mechanical or automatic.

Restyling was carried out in 2004 citroen models C5, as a result of which the car received updated design bodies, upgraded engines and a new 1.6-liter diesel.

The production of cars of the first generation continued until 2008, a total of 720 thousand copies of the model were produced.

The second generation of the Citroen C5 model has been produced since 2008 in France (also the production of cars for the local market is organized in China). IN lineup there are two body options - sedan and station wagon.

The design of the Citroen C5 is based on the PF3 platform, which is also used in the model. Basic versions of the car have a traditional spring suspension, while more expensive versions have a hydropneumatic suspension typical of Citroens.

Gasoline engines 1.6 (including turbocharged), 1.8, 2.0 and V6 3.0 are installed on the cars, developing from 120 to 211 liters. from. The choice of turbodiesels is no less wide - 1.6, 2.0, 2.2, V6 2.7 and V6 3.0 with a capacity of 109-240 forces.

Depending on the modification "Citroen C5" can be equipped with "mechanics", six-speed robotic box EGS, Renault-PSA's four-speed automatic or Aisin's six-speed automatic.

In 2010, a small restyling of the model was carried out, at the same time the car received modernized power units.

IN Russian Citroen The C5 was officially on sale until 2016. We were supplied with both sedans and station wagons (including the pseudo-off-road CrossTourer), equipped with gasoline or diesel engines... Motor repair: the main causes of unit malfunction

In the manufacture of engines for a Citroen car, quality control is checked at each stage of production of the unit, the assembly is also different high quality... As a result, the repair of motors of this brand has to be resorted to quite rarely. But, if, nevertheless, such a need occurs, then most often for the following reasons:

  • incorrect installation of new parts, untimely replacement "Consumable items";
  • repairs by car owners on their own in the absence of proper experience, and most importantly the required tools and equipment;
  • use of non-recommended brands car oiloften enough low quality;
  • neglect of visiting the technical center for timely passage technical inspectionperforming engine diagnostics;
  • installation of spare parts, individual elements not intended for this car brand;

To avoid additional material costs for premature overhaul Citroen engine, it is recommended that even with the smallest deviations in its work, it is recommended to carry out repairs and maintenance citroen engine in Moscow.

Key signs of a Citroen engine breakdown

Every engine malfunction, of course, has features its manifestation, but there are some basic indicators that accurately warn of malfunctioning of the main unit of the vehicle:

  • there is enough high consumption automobile fuel, oil;
  • there are noises and knocks uncharacteristic for engine operation;
  • the launch of the power unit occurs with certain difficulties.

Such indications notify the owner of the car precisely that it is urgently necessary to diagnose the engine, and, if necessary, repair it. At the same time, it is quite often necessary to replace defective parts, worn-out elements of the unit. This must be taken into account in advance when contacting a car service.
