GAZ 3309 universal truck for commercial use

Design

The "appearance" of the diesel "GAZon" is practically indistinguishable from the appearance of its gasoline counterpart. The difference between them was only in the presence of an air intake pipe (for the GAZ-3309), which ran along the hood and the window pillar of the cab. Thanks to this element, a diesel truck could overcome the deepest water obstacles, since the air to the engine came from this particular pipe, which was at a height of 2 meters. Plus, huge wheels and ground clearance. As we can see in the photo, GAZ-3309 has a very austere design by today's standards. However, as many drivers say, technical indicators are first of all important for a truck: if the car brings real profit, then its appearance will fade into the background.

The design of the cab of the successor to the 53rd "GAZon" practically did not change. The truck has all the same round headlights, a recognizable steel bumper, an oblong hood and a classic metal step that made it easier for the driver to get to the cabin.

Judging by the reviews, the design of the cab of the 3309th "GAZon" had many flaws. Among them, the main problem was the wings, which were constantly rusting. They had to be treated with putty or new sheets of steel were applied over the corroded metal.

At the same time, the bumper remained as massive and durable as before. Due to the large thickness of the metal, it was able to withstand forces of up to several tons. The driver could confidently fasten the cable to one of the two holes in the bumper and pull the car out of any swamp in tow. However, the diesel "GAZon" practically did not get stuck even in the deepest and most relief areas, and there was no frequent need for towing.

Interior

If we compare the salons of the 53rd and 3309th GAZons, the latter has significantly stepped forward in its convenience and design. The main difference was the use plastic parts... At the same time, in the GAZ-53 cabin there were mainly metal elements, including the instrument panel itself. The speedometer, tachometer and other informational details remain in the same old style. The glove compartment was also made with a plastic cover. The GAZon's steering wheel is two-spoke. As before, it has a very large diameter. What is remarkable diesel versions cars from the factory were equipped with a power steering. At that time, the power steering was a luxury and was installed only on the 66th "GAZon" and large-tonnage KamAZ trucks.

As we see in the photo, the GAZ-3309 is made in the style of the 80s (just then the first GAZ-3307 appeared). The design of the parts is predominantly angular. Because of this, the interior of the car seems completely outdated by today's standards.

The last and most important element of the modernization of the cab was its thermal and noise insulation, which was not even in sight in the 53rd GAZon. Much less inside extraneous sounds and engine noise. And in winter, the cabin did not freeze so quickly. Although the power of the stove was not enough to warm the interior in winter cold.

GAZ-3309: technical characteristics

The first diesel modifications of GAZon were produced in 1992. At that time, several lots of trucks equipped with the Japanese 136-horsepower Hino engine rolled off the assembly line. This project soon ceased to operate. In 1995, new turbocharged engines GAZ-5441-10 with an air cooling system began to be installed at GAZon. The total motor power was about 122 horse power... GAZ-3309 was also equipped with an Austrian in-line diesel engine and an air cooling system. Its working volume was 3.2 liters, and its power reached 150 horsepower. The main disadvantage of this power plant was its poor maintainability. After a run of 200 thousand kilometers, these engines were not subject to overhaul... At the same time, domestic motors after block boring and repair piston group could go "into battle" again.

GAZ crisis and revival

The most difficult times for GAZon came in 1998. It was at this time that the demand for domestic trucks fell to an extremely low level. The reason for this was the collapse of the collective farms, for which, in fact, this car was designed. For the Gorky plant, the production of diesel trucks has become unprofitable. Fortunately, this lasted only a year, and in 1999 the production of GAZons was revived.

1999 was a turning point for the GAZ-3309 van. The technical characteristics of this car have improved markedly thanks to the new Minsk engine MMZ D-245.7. The engine was low and high performance. This unit was also installed on ZIL "Bychok" trucks and became the most popular in Russia. It quickly fell in love with its high maintainability, power and surprisingly low fuel consumption. Spare parts were also very cheap. GAZ-3309 could be repaired practically in the field if available minimum set tools and spare parts. I bought a used GAZ 3309 from the organization, they carried food on it, the look was quite cheerful. I took it for my own needs, so to speak, as an au pair. Served right away, changed oils and filters everywhere, stuffed it, bought new batteries, front wheels, eliminated smudges at the box. In general, if briefly, it is quite unpretentious, moderately reliable (loves care) and fulfills 100%. Of the breakdowns, there was nothing particularly terrible, since the power steering tube burst (brewed it), by the way, crawl wherever something rubs against each other, and lay it with rubber, or even isolate it, you will only get a plus. Nothing else bad happened with the GAZ 3309. Always started up. Like a tractor. Already sold. From the pros: consumption is very low - up to 60 km / h consumed about 15 liters of diesel, if heated, then 17-18, but this is the maximum. The undercarriage is reliable, the main thing is to keep track of and to inject, it will walk for a very long time. Watch out for steering tips (ball) if you drive on bad roads. The engine on the GAZ 3309 is very playful in fact, but only 4750 volume. By the way, if you wake up to choose, then ask what the bridge is worth, sluggish or high-speed, I got the slug, 2000 rpm at 80 km / h. But in 5th gear, it was loaded almost all the hills. I did the treatment of the cabin and soundproofed, it became much quieter in the cabin. Of the minuses: hard until you load it, clumsy (you have to turn the steering wheel a lot), but you get used to it, then you don't notice. Well, a little noisy. Now I drive a GAZ 3309 extended 6 meters. Got not in the very good condition, so I changed in a month and a half: pads, right brake cylinder, radiator welded. Changed both outboard gimbal (on an extended universal joint from 3 parts and with 2 suspension ones), bolts of the adapter plate from the universal joint to rear axle, rear wheel nuts, studs. What I disliked: the rear wheel mounting system. The checkpoint from ZIL (the first only through pressing the second, if so that without a crunch and no matter how many times the clutch is pressed, in Moscow traffic jams it is very inconvenient to be loaded). It shakes in GAZ 3309 very strongly, even on small bumps. Lack of regular cigarette lighter or 12 volt power supply (I don't smoke myself, but the cigarette lighter for charging the phone and other things had to be taken out with separate wires from one of the two batteries). Small eversion of the wheels (turn around on the spot as for a truck or movements in 10). Headlights (not really adjusted, looking at the sky). Fuel tank (diesel, consumption 16 liters in mixed, tank only 100 liters). Cab (all blown through by the wind and very noisy). Pros: not very good overall high consumption diesel engine. There are few competitors in cargo handling (body 6 meters, carrying capacity 5 tons). It is quite maintainable (it is not very difficult to crawl somewhere). Having bought a GAZ 3309, they made anti-corrosion treatment, of course, for a surcharge, they also installed a radio tape recorder through an adapter, i.e. for one battery without any converters there, which burn every six months. After that, all the work, except for the electrician, was done by himself. The body was the first to go into consumption - the floor immediately began to break under a load of 600 kg, I had to sheathe the floor and walls with plywood, it was enough for 2 years, I didn't need more. Then the generator burned out, then the starter bendix stuck and it also burned out. I have already changed almost all the bulbs, some of them twice. The brake pipe was frayed, the air pipe twice, the power steering hose pipe three times. A lot of things still had to be done, and it is necessary to finish before normal work, and most importantly, there is always something to do with yourself in your free time. The bugs have already gone around the cabin, both at the joints and out of the blue, two years more and there will be holes, the GAZ 3309 body will rot even faster. You can tell about comfort separately, it seems that the cab was specially thought out in such a way as to annoy the driver, so that he could not somehow lie down to rest, so that he would be very uncomfortable there in everything. The turning angle is very large, it is generally unrealistic to drive around the courtyards. The suspension is very stiff at first out of habit at the end of the day, the back aches.

I took the car new, mileage at the moment is 260 thousand km. For 3 years of work at GAZ 3309, I went through a lot of things. Almost immediately I changed the kingpin, the holes on the bronze half rings did not match with the grease fittings, the generator burned, the starter was on more than once, in winter the power steering completely sucks, it is fixed on the front beam and the oil sticks on the move. The car starts turning very late. The brakes on the GAZ 3309 are very bad when you go loaded. Heating heats only on the move and preferably with a load, and if you spend the night on the road only with a closed radiator and under three blankets (more than 40 gr. The engine does not warm up). This is if there is a sleeping place. In general, it is easier to spend the night in a hotel than to burn diesel fuel. Noise isolation and tightness of the GAZ 3309 cab leave much to be desired. There is little comfort: the steering wheel is not adjustable in one position, there is nothing to say about softness - it is very tough. The planetary bolts of the rear axle tore off the ambassador 150 thousand km. The car did not see any overloads, mainly from 2.5 to 3.5 tons. GAZ-3309 belongs to the fourth generation medium-duty trucks Gorkovsky automobile plant... This is a diesel version of the GAZ-3307 cars launched in 1990 into mass production. The external difference between the GAZ-3309 and the base 3307 model is that this diesel truck has a snorkel-air intake located on the driver's side. Having appeared on the domestic market in the mid-90s, this car continues to occupy a fairly strong place in the 21st century both in the work of many organizations and farms, and in lineup factory.

The truck was developed by the design bureau of the enterprise back in the first half of the 80s of the twentieth century, when gasoline prices were several times lower, and the whole economy as a whole was completely different. And in the new economic realities gasoline engine ZMZ-511.10 turned out to be too "gluttonous" and uneconomical. The introduction of a new K-135 carburetor, with an inertial air-oil filter, did not help either.

Therefore, take care of replacing the gasoline carburetor engine the diesel plant was already in 1994. This is how the GAZ-3309 appeared. The first experiments with the installation of diesel engines on GAZ-3307 trucks were associated with a single production of a very small batch of cars equipped with the Japanese 136-horsepower Hino diesel engine. However, in the future, the Gorky Automobile Plant (quite justifiably) relied on domestically produced engines.

GAZ-3309: options and modifications

Originally it was a 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine GAZ-5441.10 own development, with a capacity of 122 hp and a working volume of 4.75 liters. However, the experience of its production, which lasted three years, in 1995-1997. was found to be generally unsuccessful. Therefore, GAZ-5441.10 replaced the Minsk engine D-245.7 on the 3309th model of GAZ trucks, also a 4-cylinder, turbocharged, with a volume of 4.75 liters, but with a capacity of 117 hp.

At present (namely, since 2013) GAZ-3309 cars are equipped with diesel engines of Yaroslavl motor plant - YaMZ-53442-10 (working volume - 4.43 liters, rated power - 134.5 hp) - modern, corresponding to advanced environmental standards Euro 4. The factory index of such vehicles is GAZ-33098.

Limited lots of trucks (with the GAZ-33096 index) also came out with Chinese Cummins ISF 3.8L diesel engines (working volume - 3.76 liters, and rated power - 152.3 hp). Some (completely insignificant) part of the cars was equipped with 6-cylinder diesel engines GAZ-562.10. They were a licensed copy of the Austrian Steyr M-16 motors.

GAZ-3309 medium-duty trucks are widely and successfully used for the transportation of a wide variety of goods on the roads of all technical categories and types of coatings (including ground coatings), and have a very good price / quality ratio.

All versions of the car had rear drive... The truck itself was built on a frame platform with dependent rear and front leaf spring suspension, which was based on longitudinal semi-elliptical springs, supplemented in front by hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers with double-acting action.
